Watch Out For Tonight's Senate Primaries, Too

In addition to the presidential race, there are two high-profile Senate primaries on the ballot today.

Democrats are favored to win both races this Fall, so there's not too much at stake here for November. On the other hand, both contests have been useful for entertainment value.

In New Jersey, Rep. Rob Andrews has mounted a Democratic primary challenge against Sen. Frank Lautenerg, charging that the 84-year old incumbent is too old and it's time for a change in the state's leadership. Polls have given Lautenberg an enormous lead in the primary, though anything could happen in a low-turnout race, leading to some suspicion about what Andrews done next.

Curiously, Andrews' wife Camille stepped in as the establishment candidate for his South Jersey Congressional seat -- but she's quite openly running as a placeholder candidate, and could potentially step down and allow the local party bosses to pick a new nominee later.

Speculation has run rampant that this replacement candidate might be Rob Andrews himself, should he lose the Senate race. Rob Andrews has denied this, saying he is leaving the House and won't use it as a fallback after the primary, while Camille Andrews has not closed the door on running in her own right.

Meanwhile, there is a hotly contested Republican race for the Senate in New Mexico, where longtime GOP incumbent Pete Domenici is retiring.

The latest polls show Rep. Steve Pearce, a fiery right-winger, narrowly ahead of the more moderate Rep. Heather Wilson. The Club For Growth has run ads for Pearce, while Wilson has received a last-minute endorsement from Domenici.

However, both candidates trail the Democratic nominee, Rep. Tom Udall, by landslide margins in all polls. As such, they may be fighting for the right to drink from a poisoned chalice.

Now cometh the downticket wave...

The old electoral maps "aught" (to quote RaeK) to be shredded.

I really wish the DNC would throw some cash or attention on SC. Lindsey Graham could easily get pushed out. He's facing at least 3 republican challengers who are running way more ads than him. The Democratic Party leadership outside of Columbia is comatose in South Carolina.

Better start kissin Clinton butt, guys. If the top of the ticket fails, it's all downhill from there.

How about kissin off Troll.

YOU LOST!

Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

Oh, that little pic. Is that your saint with a halo made out of the American flag? And he's bowing his head in prayer? That's about as sickening as it gets. Run it past the campaign, though. They might think it's appropriate. Maybe people will genuflect.

This is why I am so very happy things will change: Richard Engel just came out with a book with this quote from Idiot. Just picture having an intelligent President.....sigh.

- Bush admits to Engel that going to war was a decision based on his personal instinct and not on any long-range strategy for the Mideast:

"I know people are saying we should have left things the way they were, but I changed after 9/11. I had to act. I don't care if it created more enemies. I had to act."

May the country throw this man in jail. Warrants already in Vermont.

What Hillary should say tonight - probably her best speech ever.

Just got back from voting for Lautenberg - or more accurately AGAINST Andrews. Not a soul in the school gymnasium besides the poll workers. They said it was like that all day. I was silly not having this on the same day as the presidential primary. Not good for turnout.

It will also be interesting if Ed Fallon succeeds in his challenge against Leonard Boswell in Iowa, a progressive insurgent vrs a bluedog incumbent.

Three more superdelegates for Sen. Obama! We are SEVEN away, according to the CNN count!!!!!

Why aren't Wilson and Domencini in jail?

Damn good question. Many questions like this need attention from the next president's DoJ.

His speech will kick tonight. You guys better get ready to pucker up. We're waiting!!!
