Is Bogus Michelle Obama Rumor Based On A Work Of Fiction?
Is it possible that the bogus Michelle Obama rumor you've all heard by now is actually based on a work of fiction?
The rumor in question is one that's been circulating in recent weeks to the effect that there's video out there of Michelle Obama saying something derogatory about white people.
Not a single shred of evidence has surfaced to support this claim. Nobody has actually said they've personally seen it. It hasn't been posted to YouTube as you'd expect on something this juicy. Even Republican operatives we've spoken to say they don't believe it exists.
Despite the tenuousness of this rumor, Obama was actually asked about this non-existent video in front of the national press by a reporter the other day. Understandably, he pushed back hard on the notion that he should have to answer such a question.
Now Jim Geraghty of National Review has claimed that the rumor may be based on...fiction. A political thriller called The Power Broker, published in 2006 by Stephen Frey, features the presidential campaign of Dem candidate Jesse Wood, who's aspiring to be the country's first African-American president.
We went out and got the book. And sure enough, in the novel, Wood's opponents discover video of the candidate himself -- not his wife -- discussing with a radical black minister how he will "f--- whitey" when he gets into office, despite all his public rhetoric about racial reconciliation. Here's what he says on the fictional tape:
He said, "You know, I had to put up with so much crap from Whitey when I was playing tennis back in the day, it was ridiculous. Real b****** stuff, too. Tennis racquets busted while I was in the shower, no towels, the worst locker, called n***** all the time, even by the help." He looked over at Osgood. "I'm telling you, Clarence, if I get elected president, I'm gonna act the way I'm supposed to act in front of the camera. Smile and dance like a good black man, do what I'm expected to do like a good boy. But behind the scenes, I'll f*** Whitey, and I'll f*** him good, I really will."
If this was the basis for the rumor, Obama was forced to respond not just to a rumor, but to one that was consciously based on a published work of fiction. Welcome to General Election 2008, everyone!

You paid for the book? I am hoping you stole it.

Or...
Michelle Obama has already become a target based on her "for the first time" comment and it's not that big of a skip to say "She's black. Let's play on that and say she said something mean toward white people."
This really isn't much of a scoop unless there's a match to match going on here where I would apologize. I realize that there's the possibility of giving this story fire by repeating the email rumors going around word for word, but at the same time if you don't make a better connection all this argument looks like is:
Hey! Did you hear that some people are saying Michelle Obama said something mean about white people. And guess what?! Turns out someone wrote about a black person running for president once!
Hot dog.
Shoot, it wasn't even the president's spouse in the book saying this, it was the candidate himself!
And really, is it all that surprising that this type of racial division is being played upon without the help of books but pure old ignorance and fear? I mean were you watching the primary contests in Appalachia?
My point. This fear that there might be a backlash towards whites if Obama was elected is not something new. It's stupid but it's not new. And it wouldn't take digging through a book to know about it. So what is it? I'll give you the fact that he's talking to a radical rev. is interesting, but still. Is the language similar? And fuck whitey doesn't count.

Maybe if we keep talking about the rumor, giving it more press, letting more people hear it, and argue about whether it's true or not, then it will go away.
Good work Greg.

I'm not going to lie, I had a misspent youth, most of my teens and half of my twenties were spent throatchopping and clotheslining unsavory individuals in drunken bar brawls. Since then, with the help of my girlfriend, I'm a much calmer soul - the other day she shot me a rather bewildered look that stopped me from hopping on one of her friends who very casually regurgitated an Obama smear.
That being said, I really want to beat the fucking brakes off of Larry Johnson and his smearing of Obama - suddenly the scene of Sean Penn in "Bad Boys" when he was wielding a pillowcase full of soda's comes to mind.

You do exactly what Obama did - call them out on it:
Asked whether he knew it not to be true, Obama said he had answered the question.
“Frankly, my hope is people don’t play this game,” Obama said. “It is a destructive aspect of our politics. Simply because something appears in an e-mail, that should lend it no more credence than if you heard it on the corner. Presumably the job of the press is to not to go around and spread scurrilous rumors like this until there is actually anything, an iota, of substance or evidence that would substantiate it.”

They're trying to squelch rumors of an October Surprise that won't materialize because if the bigots (my word, not theirs) of the Republican Party are banking on a smoking gun that never materializes, it might demoralize them in November.
If you think about it, there's no nice way to spin the explanation given. I mean, he could have just said "because I believe in the truth," but instead went into details about political maneuvering. Honest, in a rather smarmy sort of way, I guess.

Nice job guys.
This kind of thing has happened before. Remember how in the 1990s Ross Perot was deep into the theory that there were x number of POWS left behind in Vietnam? There was some congressional testimony about this story and a lot of concern about the guys who had been left behind. It was all bullshit. The number of POWS and the site where they were supposedly being held came from RAMBO, though nobody caught on for a long while -- well after the congressional testimony. It may have been the Atlantic Monthly that eventually got to the bottom of this.
Here's a job for a fearless investigative reporter: what was McCain's stance on those forsaken POWs? Did he get involved in that mess? Would be easy enough to track down I suspect.

I think the Republicans are defecating masonry at the prospect of going up against Michelle Obama.
If they go after anything based in fact, I can see her standing tall and saying that it was the way she felt at the time or putting it into a context that clarifies her meaning, but never backing down or apologizing. Still, I don't think there'd ever be anything as, well, jejune as Larry Johnson's "transcription."
So plucking something from fiction—that she'd simply have to deny occurring, if she commented at all—might have seemed like the way to go for the mudmeisters.
Good thing that Democrats read trashy novels, too.

RaeKa, let me tell you a little story:
In 1948, so the legend goes, Lyndon Baines Johnson, facing a formidable and well-financed primary opponent in his Senate race, turned to his campaign manager and suggested they spread the rumor that his pig farmer opponent had engaged in acts of barnyard intimacy that provided him "routine carnal knowledge" of his sows.
Taken aback, Johnson's campaign manager protested, "But Lyndon, we can't say that! It's not true!" To which Johnson replied, "Of course not, but let's make the bastard deny it."
And that, RaeKa, is why Obama didn't simply just deny the rumor.

I think the only way to push back against this type of stuff is with open ridicule. Like I was saying the other night about President Obama appointing Mumia Secretary of Kill Whitey. You know, just respond to it with completely sarcastic conflations. One of my carpenters was spinning some story to me the other day about how Obama wanted to ration food and gas. No shit. So I patiently asked where he had gotten this idea. He repeats back something Obama had said about how we need to conserve resources, be less wasteful wherever possible. I said, well, do you really think that translates into mandatory rationing? That idea doesn't even make sense, because he's a politician and there's no way he would even propose anything like that which would make everyone hate him. Who in the Congress would go along with that? It would have zero chance of passing. Politicians don't propose things they know have zero chance of passing.
We shouldn't kid ourselves; there are a lot of people out there desperately grasping at straws for excuses not to like the guy...because they don't want to admit that it's really because he's black. I'm making it my personal habit not to allow any of them that I meet off the hook that easily. They can vote for whoever they want, but I'm not going to let them get away with pretending they made their decision on some other basis.

Steve Case of AOL/Time Warner is a right wing republican. Our media is as liberal as the multinational corporations that own them. Don't ever forget that.
The thing is, people who support Obama are going to have to learn the art of saying "Ridiculous" without going on and on and on and without whining about it.
The Republicans are baiting you and hoping you will do as you did in the Clinton campaign and start perceiving everything as racist. YES, this is clearly racist.
They want Obama's supporters to talk about racism and racist attacks because they know nothing creates white solidarity than the claim (regardless of truth) that anyone to the left of the Grand Master of the Ku Klux Klan is racist. Yes, you can call the KKK racist, but no one else. Not without creating us vs. them solidarity.
Now, all the gratuitous and frequently unfounded claims of racism worked in the primary - though not everywhere. Different audience, different electorate. You pull that stuff in the general and Obama might just McGovern this election after all.
June 6, 2008 7:47 PM | Reply | Permalink
This is exactly what matters here. Every time the topic of discussion is race, Obama takes a hit. The "post-racial" and "moving beyond division" ideas are what scare the Republicans most, since they defy their comfortable demographic and wedge-issue electoral advantages. They don't care if they lose these arguments or look temporarily shamed. Whenever people are reminded that Obama is "the black candidate," his candidacy suffers. Bill Clinton knew this, Hillary Clinton knew this, and the Republicans definitely know this.

I just heard from a friend of a friend that his next door neighbor's dog says that Larry Johnson actually works for Dick Cheney. Johnson apparently first worked for Cheney when Johnson was a disinformation specialist at the CIA while Cheney was DOD Secretary under Bush I. According to this rumor, Johnson has maintained a front image as a liberal-leaning anti-terrorism expert so that he could plausibly disrupt the campaign of the 2008 Democratic presidential nominee with disinformation to head off threats to reverse the national security policies of Cheney/Bush. I have no idea if this dog is a credible source but I felt it was my patriotic duty to share this rumor on the slim chance that it might be true.

If you knew where Larry Johnson hails from in St. Louis, you would know why he is trying so hard to smear Senator Obama and his wife. Let's just say that he and Rush have the same belief system on race. By the way, not only have I completely changed my mind about Larry Johnson, but since he is such good buds with Valerie Plame and Joe Wilson, I have my doubts about them too. Especially given how Joe was on the garbage route dumping trash on Senator Obama as well. Kind of makes you wonder why they were so very, very supportive of Senator Clinton. Why are they so afraid of Senator Obama? Hmmm?
June 6, 2008 8:58 PM | Reply | Permalink
I think it important to distinguish between Johnson and Valerie and Joe Wilson on this. Joe has several reasons to be loyal to the Clintons, he was promoted to Ambassador to NATO by Bill Clinton as his last overseas posting, and he led the Africa Desk in Clinton's NSC as his last job before retirement -- and he organized Clinton's long Africa Trip. All this was before Valerie and Joe Married. Except for Joe's Iraq and NATO posting, all his career was spent in Africa, and I seriously doubt if his attitudes on Race are similar to what we are seeing from Johnson at No Quarter.
Valerie has known Johnson from covert CIA stuff for years -- they trained together, she beat him on the AK47 target test. They have the kind of buddy-loyality relationship one would expect of covert officers, and when Valerie became the target of Cheney and Scooter, Larry became her one man public relations effort -- someone who could speak in public, which she could not do.
Johnson was not beloved by Bill Clinton's NSC -- you might want to look up Stephen Simon and Daniel Benjamin's book, "The Age of Sacred Terror" all about Clinton's efforts against Al Qaeda and Bin Laden by the two NSC staff who worked for Richard Clarke, and who worked very much at cross purposes with Johnson, whom they claim did not take Bin Laden seriously. They document a pretty good case.
Apparently among other things, Larry Johnson was a dissinformation specialist while with CIA in Latin America, and one concern we should always have is former CIA types importing their tradecraft into the domestic political world. While in service they were valued for these skills, and sometimes on retirement they really can't detach themselves from bad habits. Apparently in Florida in 2000 a number of retired officers who were in CIA when Bush Sr. was DCI and then VP, were organized to work for GWBush in Florida -- and I don't know that anyone ever tracked down what exactly they did in Florida in 2000. In otherwords it is a generalizable problem, how do we keep CIA out of using their tradecraft in domestic politics? It isn't a new problem -- E. Howard Hunt did covert for Nixon afterall.

So your afraid of them because they are a pair of well educated people, is that it. Don't be scared. The Obamas have no intention of revoking your whiteness. They couldn't care less that such a slack jawed, mouth breathing, knuckle walker like you even exists.

Like Kitty Dukakis, Cindi McCain is actually a recovering drug addict. Dukakis was asked about that by the press. When will McCain be asked a similar quesiton?

They are the creepiest couple on the planet. Neither of their faces works right. Hers hasn't moved at all in about 10 years, I don't think, and his moves like he's already a corpse and someone has their hand up his ass moving his mouth. That "heh heh heh" is just fucking creepy.

I truly think the American people should demand McLame to come clean about what the hell he's carrying in his cheeks. We have a right to know.

Not only a recovering drug addict but stole pills from her own not-for-profit to feed her habit:
We'll never hear that question asked, I'm sure.

So, an entirely fictional account of Michelle Obama using an archaic and relatively inoffensive (to any sane person) term for white people gets MSM attention, while a substantiated report of McCain publicly referring to his wife using a 4-letter word that starts with "c" was barely reported and faded out completely within a day or two..?

Yeah - as Pac said: Ain't that a bitch?
The media isn't biased for their corporate masters - those same masters who wouldn't let them publish the truth in the run up to the Iraq War.
We need a Truth Commission on the Press. It's so important to a functioning democracy that it is the first goddamn thing that gets a constitutional guarantee of freedom. Freest fucking press on earth - that's what they were handed and this is what they've done with it.
I want hearings on the complete failure of public duty that the supposedly free press in this country was guilty of in the selling of the Iraq War.

What is so interesting about a racist "plot" element coming from a recent novel? This precise crap about blacks getting whitey if they gain power goes back to before Birth of A Nation, to before The Klansman. It's the very stuff of lily white Democratic Reconstruction in the South in the 1860s and 1870s and of just about all histories of Reconstruction until Kenneth Stampp came along. Bigots may be stupid, but they have long memories, and the arsenal of "ideas" they draw on is rather limited in number as in all else.

If that video produced publicly couldnt the book author sue for copy right infringement seeing that the creators of the video didnt get permission to use the author's material?
That would have been funny not to mention news worthy itself.

The Michell Obama "Whitey Video" is the new Kitty Dukakis "Flag Burning Picture".

Here's the huge difference: Michele Obama isn't married to Mike Dukakis. She's married to a much different man altogether.
It's going to be difficult for them to push this shit too far.
In the first place, the whole party has Obama's back now.

There was a whole, multi-page thread on a Clinton Forum with hundreds of people hoping for this alleged tape to be released. The comments went from, she is holding it for the right moment to wondering how Obama is suppressing it.
This was as late as Wednesday morning that these people were "hoping" for this miracle.

You know, you people are really sticking your heads in the sand (which is only natural since your mouths are always in the dirt)
but anyways, TPM wouldn't have posted this story if it was pure bullshit. They didn't post anything about Larry sinclair for example.
If this were pure rumor, it wouldn't be leaking out like this, little by little...
Even Bob Beckel mentioned it. Or are you going to accuse him of being a closet republican??
June 6, 2008 9:48 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yo dumbshit.
Obama was asked about it by a reporter.
Ya think maybe that's why he mentioned it?
Like DOH!
Why are you so jealous of soon-to-be-First Lady, Michelle Obama?

Dude!
Nothing's leaked out --- nor will it ever --- except the rumor.
But thanks for playin'!

Unfortunately, the smear campaign targeting Michelle will probably get worse as the election nears. I have heard seemingly rational people (at other times) describe her as "militant" (why, did you see her plant in I.E.D.?).

What kind of butthelmet invents a story about a videotape? Sure, I can see inventing a story where you say, "My cousin's best friend's old hairdresser saw Michelle Obama rant about whitey!" because the story explains its own lack of corroboration.
But if there's a video, why not just show it to us? It's just stupid.
Also, why do the wingnuts all assume that Michelle Obama talks like Dolemite?

Exactly. Obama faced two months of PR hell, with attacks coming from the Republicans, the Clintons and the media, and he weathered it and came out strong. He can definitely handle anything they throw at him, he is a pro.
June 6, 2008 9:58 PM | Reply | Permalink
Well said, he does deal with it well. I think he was slightly taken aback when Hillary found herself playing catch-up and her surrogates started being really nasty but it did have the effect of toughening him up.

Its obviously bullshit, hell, Hillary's campaign probably floated the rumor to scare off superdelegates.

Michelle called William Jennings Bryan a whitey?

And what is this "fiction" and "fact" of which you all speak? Are those two supposed to be different things or something? It's all just too confusing.
June 6, 2008 11:16 PM | Reply | Permalink
No.
It was Cindy McCain that called Mr. Bryan a whitey.
She was high on opium purchased with money stolen from the suffrage movement.
Susan B. Anthony was piiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiissed!

From Ben Smith's blog, Politico:
Robert George has a reminder of an odd constant in presidential politics: false rumors of about-to-be-produced evidence damning the candidate's wife.
He writes of
... a really weird conservative urban legend that pops up every four years. The names change, but the basics remain the same: 1) It always involves the wife of the Democratic presidential candidate; 2) It always portrays the wife — not the candidate — committing some anti-American, unpatriotic act.
I was first exposed to this during the 1988 campaign when the line was, "There's a picture out there of Kitty Dukakis burning the American flag ... just wait till that comes out ..." (that one got out of hand when a GOP senator actually believed it and called a press conference to say he would soon produce the evidence — which never materialized). Four years later, "There's a picture out there of Hillary Clinton burning the American flag ... just wait till that comes out ..." In 1996, the Hillary thing repeated itself. In '04, there was a similar one about Teresa Heinz Kerry."

VERY interesting... thanks for that. Some folks up here ask why these guys on TPM report this but I think it's beneficial to jump on crap like this & debunk the hell out of it ASAP. How else can you do it w/out alerting readers?
