Poll: Senate GOP Leader Barely Ahead In Re-Election Race
In what is shaping up as a plum pickup opportunity for Senate Dems in a very unlikely place, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell could be in for a very serious race this fall, according to a new SurveyUSA poll of Kentucky.
The numbers: McConnell 50%, Democratic businessman Bruce Lunsford 46%, within the ±4% margin of error. A Rasmussen poll from a few weeks ago gave Lunsford the lead, coming right off of his primary victory.
McConnell has had the unenviable task of defending President Bush's Iraq positions on a daily basis. If the political environment turns out to be such that the Democrats can win this one, then the GOP will start finding it very difficult to prevent the Dems from getting a 60-seat majority.

Isn't 50% considered the political equivalent of the Mendoza line?
Too bad Jim Bunning isn't running this year....

An excellent use of baseball satire! Kudos to you. Although .200 might be the best the GOP can muster in Congressional races this November.

In most states, yes.
In my native New Jersey, where politicians are unpopular as a rule, it's more like 40%. If the incumbent goes below that, he might be in real trouble.

Poor Mr. Elaine Chao.
Sorry for the formatting, I blame Ted Stevens. It used to work!

As bad as Lunsford is, it would be sweet to ditch Mitch. And Daschle would indeed get the last laugh.

Damn, we will have to listen to mitch for another two years at least. 50% is the mendoza line and he's at it. I was hoping for a huge upset. Not gonna happen at this point, especially in kentucky.

Hold your powder, Slim.
Kentucky hasn't seen the whites of McConnell's eyes yet.

Hope you're right al. I would love to see mitch go down. The guy is pathetic.

Here's hoping. McConnell wouldn't just signal a Democratic landslide, he's also the evil genius behind a lot of the GOP's Senate machinations over the past seven years. If he goes, a lot of irreplaceable institutional knowledge about how to game the rules goes with him.

Sen. Twit will be such a plum if he loses this fall. Can't stand the guy and his speaking manners are ever so boring...How can KY re-elect him?

Perhaps O'Connell would be doing better if his publicity photos didn't make him look like the offspring of Jesse Helms and a particularly stupid turkey.

Let's not beat them too badly...we don't want an insurgency on our hands.

As a KY resident, I feel it is my responsibility when a clown like McConnell sits in Congress, determined to undermine his constituency.
Lunsford was Chuck Schumer's pick, not mine, and despite the latter's immense bankroll, we almost managed to put a usable Dem on the ticket. Nonetheless, its gotta be Lunsford this November, so we hope to train him to win a political race in KY for once. To read that Lunsford is already within striking distance is heartening news, but here in KY, the race does not yet exist. Root for us, we'll need it.

Eric,
Look at the crosstabs. Do you honestly believe that Democrats will have a 25 percent advantage in KY this year? I know Democrats had a 5 percent advantage in 2004 (CNN exit polls), but 25 percent? I don't think so.
