Poll: Obama Has Double-Digit Lead In Wisconsin

Barack Obama is in good shape in the swing state of Wisconsin, a new poll from the state university finds. The numbers: Obama 50%, McCain 37%, well beyond the ±4.5% margin of error.

In a bad sign for John McCain, 66% of respondents said the war in Iraq was not worth righting, and only 24% of Wisconsinites now consider themselves Republicans, compared to 38% Democrats and 29% independents.

I know these are just polls, it is really early, and this is a reflection of some kind of bump, but I'm so excited to see the polls moving in this direction. I'm cautiously optimistic.

Go Scony! Represent!! Wisconsin native here.... Excellent news! Outside of the margin of error. Only 24% Repub, that is huge for Wisconsin. It's always been pretty 50/50 there.....

Yes, an amazing result in what was Tommy Thompson country.

Hear, hear!

Eric, all signs for McLame are bad signs, so far.

If anyone has seen one good sign for McLame, please tell me.

Well, he's the Maverick!!! His number one playing card..... So Maverick-eeeeeeeee! Swoon!

The conformist candidate would try to be leading in the polls. But not the Maverick.

Yeah, I believe Maddow last night was saying that McSame could use the whole underdog thing as a campaign message. Everyone likes an underdog, ya know......

But but but... isn't Obama like Carter? Or William Jennings Bryan? No, wait, John Quincy Adams. Everyone who remembers JQA will see this immediately.

Tena, I think a new poll in Iraq shows McLame favourite amongst Sh'ites..or is it Sunnis? Oh wait...!

States that are NOT battlegrounds, no matter what the media says: WI, WA, OR, MN, NJ.

user-pic

But don't tell the GOP - we want them spending lots of money contesting these states.

user-pic

Especially nj. Very expensive for them and its always a tease.

Indeedy, that Joysee advertising costs an awminaleg.

Yeah, as a Minnesota native, I can say that the only reason Pawlenty was reelected governor was that there was a third party spoiler candidate in 2006.

Yeah, and he one by what, 1%? What a blow out...

No Doubt.

YEEEEEEEEEEEHAAA. Big breaking news, the supreme court struck down the nazi administration on gitmo. The detainees can petition federal courts. HUUUUUUGGGGGEEEE!!!

Only shame is that it was 5-4 again. It should have been 9-0. We need people on the court that can find the constitution. 4 of them don't even know what it is.

OMYGOD!

That's huge!

The rule of law has been restored!!

Everyone I know in Wisconsin, family and friends, have said there is no doubt about where the state is going in 08. This one should be solidly in O's camp.

Although I completely agree that the Iraq war wasn't worth fighting, I vacillate on whether I believe it's worth righting.

Someone who has not been mentioned for the VP slot, but perhaps should be given some consideration: Governor Jim Doyle of Wisconsin. He is a two term Governor in a State that has trended Republican in it's recent history.

The man has a long winning record. Check out his performance on Health Care. Looks like he would no a thing or two about what is needed. He also endorsed Senator Obama before the Wisconsin primary.

Here is his Bio.

Biography of Governor Jim Doyle

Gov DoyleAs our stateÆs 44th chief executive, Governor Jim Doyle is focused on creating opportunity for all of WisconsinÆs people. To do that, he is working to strengthen our schools, make college more affordable, expand access to health care, grow our economy and cut taxes on hardworking Wisconsin families.

When he took office in 2003, Governor Doyle inherited the largest budget deficit in Wisconsin history û a $3.2 billion hole. By making deep and often difficult cuts in state government, he was able to balance the budget without hurting priorities like education and without raising taxes.

Now Governor Doyle is working to move Wisconsin forward û creating jobs, expanding access to health care, and most importantly, investing in WisconsinÆs future: our kids.

Creating Opportunity Through Education

As the son and husband of teachers, Governor Doyle understands the power of education to provide opportunity and improve our lives. Despite inheriting huge deficits, Governor Doyle has always made protecting and strengthening our schools his number one priority.

Governor Doyle is working to reduce class sizes in the early grades and expand four year old kindergarten throughout the state. He is fighting for reforms in the school funding formula to make it fairer and more flexible. To make sure our kids are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow, Governor Doyle wants to raise standards by making a third year of math and a third year of science mandatory for high school graduation.

Governor Doyle also believes that higher education should be affordable and available to everyone. He has allowed families to deduct more of their college expenses, and is on pace to triple financial aid since the day he took office.

Governor Doyle has also launched the Wisconsin Covenant, a partnership between the state, our public and private higher education institutions, and our students. Under the Wisconsin Covenant, every eighth grade students who agrees to stay in school, maintain a B average and be a good citizen will be guaranteed a spot in college and a financial aid package that meets their familyÆs needs. It will make high school more meaningful, and it will make the dream of college a reality for any student willing to work hard.

Making Health Care More Affordable

Governor Doyle is working to make health care more affordable and available to all Wisconsin citizens.

As a first step, Governor Doyle is working to make all health care premiums tax free. He has fought to save and expand SeniorCare û WisconsinÆs model prescription drug program û and is a leading national advocate for allowing citizens to buy safe, affordable prescription drugs from Canada. He is also expanding Family Care statewide, so that seniors and people with disabilities can get care in their own homes and communities instead of being forced into nursing homes.

Governor Doyle has proposed an innovative effort to expand health care coverage to virtually all of our citizens, including a plan to offer coverage to every child in Wisconsin. By expanding WisconsinÆs BadgerCare program, allowing families to purchase low-cost insurance for their kids, and through other reforms, Governor DoyleÆs plan will make affordable health insurance available to 98 percent of our citizens à more than any other state in the nation.

Creating Jobs and Building an ôOpportunity Economyö for Our Citizens

Governor Doyle has made job creation a priority since day one of his administration, based on his bedrock belief that ôthere is no social program better than a good-paying job.ö

Governor DoyleÆs strategy focuses on moving every sector of WisconsinÆs economy toward the ôhigh endö û whether it is agriculture, tourism, technology, or manufacturing. He has provided tax cuts and tax credits that encourage business development, expanded worker training, slashed burdensome red tape and implemented the most sweeping regulatory reform in the Midwest. Through investments in technology, stem cell research, and renewable energy, Governor Doyle is working to attract new industries and new jobs to our state.

As a result, Wisconsin has seen steady job growth since Governor Doyle took office, with tens of thousands of new jobs.

Personal history

Born on November 23, 1945, to James E. Doyle Sr. and Ruth Bachhuber Doyle, Governor Doyle and his three sisters grew up in Madison. Governor Doyle is married to Jessica Laird Doyle and they have two adult sons, Gus and Gabe.
Governor DoyleÆs parents were founding members of the modern Democratic Party in Wisconsin and he credits them for instilling in him the belief that politics and government are honorable professions, and that public service is a way to improve peopleÆs lives.

Governor Doyle attended Stanford University for three years, then finished his senior year at UW-Madison. He is a 1972 graduate of Harvard Law School.
Inspired by John F. KennedyÆs call to public service, after college the Governor and First Lady worked for two years as teachers in Tunisia, Africa in the Peace Corps. After he graduated from law school, the Governor and First Lady moved to the Navajo Indian Reservation in Chinle, Arizona to work as an attorney and teacher, respectively.

In 1976, Governor Doyle was elected Dane County District Attorney and served three terms from 1977-82. When he left that office, he spent eight years building his own private law practice until he was elected Wisconsin Attorney General in 1990. Governor Doyle was reelected as Attorney General in 1994 and 1998.

He was elected as WisconsinÆs Governor in 2002 and reelected in 2006 with more votes than any candidate for Governor in Wisconsin history.

I like Doyle, I wouldn't say he's a standout. Gov. Brad Henry does look like he could be a winner... it seems Obama needs white men.

Edit; Would know a thing or two

And here's another state on it way to being out of reach for McSame: Iowa - 45/38, good guys ahead.

A Rasmussen poll taken on June 10 and released this morning shows Obama expanding his lead in Iowa to 7 points, 45% to 38%; a month ago, Obama led by just 2 points, 44% to 42%. Obama's support has held steady over the last few Rasmussen Iowa polls, whereas McCain has now sunk below 40% for the first time.

Wisconsin is usually a squeaker. Great news.

These are not mere victory margins that are emerging but rather landslide margins for Obama.

Heck of a job, RNC.

The battleground states are emerging, and it looks like Wisconsin won't be one of them. Score another likely electoral victory for Obama.

Liam: Jim Doyle does indeed sound like a strong VP candidate. However, I suspect that the wider Obama's polling margin in Wisconsin, the less likely Doyle will be to get the nod.

user-pic

Electoral victory for obama AND the american people. My guess is the battle grounds will be around appalachia for the republicans and to hold serve on the bush states. That means mcbush will make a big play for pa to counter losses in iowa and potentially mountain states like colorado. That would be the game plan from the republicans' perspective.

Of course, the most vetted, the most honest VP choice would be Feingold. No skeletons in his closest, no financing problems there.

Something like what happened to Johnson (VP vetter), if done to his VP, could really sink the momentum. Play it safe, choose Feingold.

And that's all I'll say on Feingold today, promise. :)

user-pic

I have noticed how strongly and often you have put forth Russ Feingold's name for Obama's veep. I have to agree that it would be a dream ticket for me, too.
I can't think of a Senator I admire more than Feingold. He is purely golden in his above-and-beyond sharp intellect, his passion, his political courage, his autonomy, and especially his unwavering integrity.
So, I think if Obama chose Feingold, it would be a clear example of audacity in action. I mull it over this way.....well, why not go for the gold?

For fun check the vintage campaign ads at the bottom of the page(they're some of the best political ads ever and FUNNY too):

Great!

Wisconsin sealed the deal for Barack to get the nomination.
Glad to see they are happy with their decision.

So:
Obama has 12% of the Independents.
McCain has 13% of the Independents.

As in most elections, the Independent vote will decide the election.

WI is Obama country. There are a lot of indies but they aren't McC's brand of indies.

Obama is really pulling forward in swing states. WA is getting MA numbers now, that isn't even a remote possibility for McC anymore.

Not only that but for every swing state he can take out of the swing category, he adds another formerly red state. Rassmussen has Obama within 2 points in North Carolina 45-43.

Don't get your hopes up about NC. It's red.

We are going to win Ohio too.
Trust me on this.

No we're not.

Hi josephcast. Thanks for the site. I haven't thought about Feingold in a while but he is one of my favorites too. Such an honorable man among a dishonorable bunch. He has worked for exactly the thing Obama is promoting: a government that truly works for the people it represents.

BFD. This poll is meaningless. The Democrats are supposed to win Wisconsin. John Kerry won it and didn't become president. Al Gore won it and didn't become president.

Tell us something important.

user-pic

This poll and the one in NC are pretty amazing. He also has a lead in IA. I also note that in several red states where McCain has about a 10-point lead, the totals only add up to roughly 90%. So, there are some folks who are undecided. I am wondering if the ones unwilling to choose at this stage are mostly ultra-righties who think McCain's too liberal or disaffected Hillary voters. I also think it's time to throw Bob Barr into the mix. These polls are not accurate without his name there. He could throw a number of states into play, especially Georgia, where I live. The idea that my vote might actually count for something down here is pretty mind-boggling. It's almost enough to make person consider saying "yes, we can." ;-)
