Poll: Michelle Obama Viewed Favorably By More Americans Than Cindy McCain

If Michelle Obama is indeed edging into a more public role in the campaign, as The New York Times asserted today, she starts with an advantage over her Republican counterpart:

Forty-eight percent of Americans in a new ABC News/Washington Post poll see Obama favorably, vs. 39 percent for McCain, a 9-point Obama advantage. Slightly more, though, also view Obama unfavorably -- 29 percent vs. McCain's 25 percent.

Substantially more, 36 percent, haven't yet formed an opinion of McCain, vs. 23 percent in Obama's case. For both, those are sizable numbers who've yet to make a judgment.

Via The Page. The poll's internals also have some interesting numbers, showing that more non-feminists and more white women view Michelle favorably.

Given that a fictitious video tape of Michelle supposedly saying bad things about white people got at least as much attention as Cindy's initial refusal to disclose her income, that's not a bad starting place.

How could she not be? She freaking rocks... not like a certain Botoxed Barbie I can think of.

I don't think it is fair at all to compare Michelle with Cindy. Cindy is an heiress and drug addict. Michelle came up with modest means is ivy league educated and a Harvard trained lawyer. Other than having spouse's running for President these two women come from very different backgrounds.

Not to mention that Cindy is petty and made those snide comments about how she has 'always' been proud of this country in an attempt to misconstrue and make Michelle look bad.

Cindy seems to lack a core despite having adopted a daughter from Bangledash.

avatar

That was wrong of her, to talk about how "she has always been proud."

Of course she has. She's Paris Hilton. How easy to "always" be proud of a place that denies you nothing.

She trying to speak as if the American experience were a singular thing. It's an absurd comparison for her to make.

avatar

I think it is fine for Cindy McCain to be proud of America. Why not, even. She lived in America that allowed her to be "the other woman" that broke up the McCain first marriage, She lived in an America that she could manipulate justice that allowed her to get off thus putting a blight on her work for poor Chidren's health coverage, and after stealing drugs by forging a doc's signature to controlled narcotics prescription, she lived in an America where she could bamboozle the legal system of the United Stated by her stack of money to get her husband, John, off in his Keating 5 scandalous illegal behavior. Of course she can feel very good because she inherited money form a father and grandfather, both of whom were into illegal activities so that they WERE convicted felons. On the other hand, Michelle came from humble background, worked hard, had to go to college on scholarships, then on to Law School, after which she worked in the community helping less fortunate. Anyone who claims Cindy McCain is seen as occupying the White House in a better light than Michelle Obama is not posting with a full deck or are actually twisting facts. Even Mrs, Bush, bless her heart, stood up for Michelle. So I say to Michelle, you will make a first class First Lady and may you be a great inspiration to young women black or white, and to women in general. You are a great achiever and will be a great First Lady, and a great, successful person in your own right similar to Jackie Kennedy or Hillary Clinton. So you GO Michelle. We look forward to your moving right into the White House come January 2009. God bless.

The big problem for Cindy McCain is in her past. She forged a volunteer Doctor's name on prescriptions and then stole the drugs that were delivered to her charity. In other words, she stooped to stealing drugs from her children's charity. If she insists on maligning Michelle's patriotism, she needs to face the fact that many of us are fact checkers and I simply put her name in the search engine and out popped not only the fine work she did in her work with children, but also her criminal activity that was never prosecuted in a fair way due to her connections. Her criminal activity should not surprise us since her father and I think even her Grandfather were convicted of crimes. My advice to you Cindy, stop throwing hate bombs when you live in a glass house. In comparison, your past does not stand the smell test for legality even. I admire your work with children and the fact that you "went straight and kicked the drug habit, but that does not excuse your comments about some one else.

yeah seriously. cindy mccain is just the latest in a long line of stepford wives to try to become first lady.

michelle obama will break the cycle at long last.

Larry Johnson's probably looking for Michelle Obama look-alikes on Craigslist right now so he can make a "whitey" tape. That whole gambit really made him look like a jack-ass.

He is a jackass.

avatar

As I always said, Larry Johnson is a complete jackass. His only utility was his proximity to the Valerie Plame affair. Beyond that, an oaf in a bad Ceasar doo. He should be wrasslin catfish somewhere.

"Beyond that, an oaf in a bad Ceasar doo. He should be wrasslin catfish somewhere."

LOL.

... wrasslin catfish ...

Actually, it's called "noodling."

Don't ask me how I know. :-)

Oh, that just offered further evidence.

It just keeps getting better and better.

Speaking of Cindy, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm 99% sure that the guy in the Ford banner add at the top of TPM is the same actor as the guy in the trollop video!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euu_DMhsXQo&e

It's gotta be the same guy.

And Larry Johnson ... don't get me started ... that guy is truly evil.

I used to like Larry. He had a lot to say.

As to Michelle and Cindy, Michelle is grounded, worked hard, accomplished a lot and is smart. Cindy is blond, has cheerleader cheekbones and had a rich daddy. Yeh, they have a lot in common.

But, but, but Cindy said she's always been proud to be an American!

Who cares if she is proud....

"doesn't mean that much to me to mean that much to you..."

I got to hear Michelle Obama speak before super tuesday and it was a real surprise. She's actually awesome when she's allowed to cut loose: unapologetically progressive, straightforward and relatable. They seem to be trying to keep her toned-down and out of the spotlight since she became a magnet for right-wing attacks and I think it's too bad. She's not a vulnerability!

Anyone else notice that there are TWO Florida polls out to day showing Barack ahead of McSame in the Sunshine State?
Quinnipiac and ARG.

Cindy appears even more artificial and/or drug-addled than Laura does at times.

Of course, when your own husband calls you a c*nt, I suppose it's hard to stand on a stage next to him grinning like an idiot.

The WHITEY comment came from a book called The Power Brokers about a black politician running for pres.

They can't even make up their own slurs!

Hey, I thought wives were off limits! What's wrong with you guys?

I guess people like "angry and bitter" over cookie plagiarists. Interesting.

Cable news is full of blabbing about "managing" Michelle Obama's image, her wardrobe, her likeability, etc. Blecchhh.

Remembering what happened to Hillary in 1992, my stomach is in knots.....

She's been called BO's secret weapon, she handles herself well in a crowd, and todays TV appearance is the start of making that work. Still, we don't elect spouses. And to the extent they make themselves surrogates, the also make themselves targets, alas. Politics knows no bounds of good taste.

i think cindy and michelle are cool. cindy has more skeletons in her closet and if the republicans go after michelle then bring it on

http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/06/18/heres-a-new-way-2-smear-obama/

She's a woman, black, strong, independent, successful, opended-minded, hip and opinionated- a perfect recipe for Republican attacks.
What else can we expect?

One thing I liked about Hillary- she was not a trophy wife. Michelle Obama certainly is no trophy wife.

O I am biting my fingers to keep from popping off on that comment about Bill and Hillary. I really do agree - I'm generally impressed with guys who marry real people. Cindy McLame is really a middle-aged model of the Cherry2000.

Cindy's disapproval rating will increase when voters realize that she is pinching their favorite recipes.

That's good. I think without Hillary Clinton, Ms. Obama will provide a stronger image. She represents the balanace between home and career. I think most women admire her balance.

Honestly, can we not jockey the spouses? Let's keep our eye on the ball..........POLICY. I'm happy to concede they're both fine individuals - Cindy and Michelle. Stop the distractions. Policy!!! Substance! Leave the rest to the tabloids.

Cindy reminds me of what would happen if you put Pat Nixon and Paris Hilton into a cuisinart and strained the results through a cheesecloth of Vicodan.

Michelle's guest spot is up on YouTube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59twO1fJwtQ

She's smart, funny, quick and above all, real. Wears fantastic, modern, functional clothes. No obligatory red, white or electric blue, knit suits for her!

The best part is how Obama has the courage to stand by her and not allow the negative stuff to change the way he and Michelle operate. She's not playing the potted palm with an adoring gaze, despite the controversy.

Gotta love that guy.

Anybody with a cookie recipe joke yet?

No, but I'll steal one.

CNN said the opposite today.

Let's raffle off a chance to bitchslap Elizabeth Hasselbeck!!

Anyone who is "always proud of their country" is an unthinking, amoral idiot.

No nation in the history of the earth deserves 24/7/365 praise and pride.

And the most powerful nations often do things none of us should be proud of. Ever.

That is, if we can actually think about stuff in an adult manner, and not as a three-year-old.

"Mommy and Daddy are perfect!!"

Sheeesh. Vietnam alone should have been enough to give Cindy pause before saying such a stupid thing. Three million civilians dead for no reason. America had no business in that country and the death toll was unconscionable. Iraq is the same, with a lower death rate, but still unconscionable.

Great powers do terrible things. They always have and always will. It's up to people who REALLY love their country to make sure those things happen as rarely as possible. Saying one is always proud just makes it easier for terrible mistakes to proliferate. It's actually the opposite of "love of country." It's the love of three monkeys.

The following are facts about Michelle, not opinions:

Despite low SAT scores, Michelle got into Princeton as a legacy because her brother Craig was a star basketball player there.

Michelle admitted to Newsweek that she got into Harvard Law School via affirmative action.

Michelle started a high-paid job with Sidley & Austin in the fall of 1988, though she failed the Illinois bar exam in July 1988.

avatar

Wrong. Michelle Obama graduated cum laude from Princeton and earned her way into Harvard Law School. Why lie about something so easy to check out?

Newsweek also tells us that she skipped second grade. She did well enough, early enough, to do so. And, no. She doesn't tell them that she got into Harvard Law because of affirmative action. Again, she earned her way in through doing extremely well at Princeton.

http://www.newsweek.com/id/112849/

You posted disinformation, not facts. My guess is you got it from some right wing smear campaign.

Are you proud of spreading false information?

Shame on you. And ask yourself--why were you so quick to believe this misinformation? Is it because you started from a place of wanting to dislike Michelle Obama, and latched on to the first thing that supported that negative view?

Holy crap! If the second one of you two guys is right, the first one has been reckless and defamatory, perhaps without giving it enough thought. Innocent in the one sense, but we are responsible nonetheless for things we say about others and we should be careful.
