Obama Campaign Manager's New Video Lays Out Strategy For Victory
This is pretty novel. Obama campaign manager David Plouffe has filmed a new Web video of himself, using a laptop in his office, in which he rallies the troops with a PowerPoint about the campaign's strategy to win the general election.
The Obama campaign is emailing out the video to supporters. Give it a watch:
In it, Plouffe makes points similar to the ones he made in a PowerPoint presentation to reporters the other day, but with a new PowerPoint. Now the Obama camp wants it to get out to its broader audience of supporters.
Plouffe optimistically tells viewers that John McCain doesn't have many opportunities to grab any of the 252 electoral votes that went to Kerry, while the Obama camp is going after 2004 red states like Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada, and even some "unusual" places like Alaska, Montana and North Dakota.
At the same time, Plouffe make sure to stress to supporters that they can't just take it easy. As he points out, the apparent cash different between Obama and McCain will be mediated by the RNC's $50 million lead over the DNC -- not an inconsiderable difference, considering that the McCain campaign will be relying on the RNC for a lot of heavy lifting.
"John McCain, the RNC, the shadowy outside groups, are not gonna let this election happen without a fight," Plouffe says. He adds a warning that Michelle, too, will be a target: "And so right around the corner we're gonna see millions of dollars attacking Barack, attacking Michelle Obama, and we have to have the ability to fight back."

I, for one, find this sort of thing really helpful.

And Plouffe is so calm. He really does embody the Obama campaign's choice to eschew drama.

Come on! McLame is only 3 points up on Obama in Texas - could someone please give us a chance and not just write us off?
*sigh*

I'm with you Tena! I think Obama will wait until after the convention and see where the polls are. If they're close I fully expect the campaign to go full bore for those 34 votes... It would make the permutations that get us to 271 a whole lot more numerous.

I'm with tena as well. However, he should go full bore now. There is an excellent chance to pick up a senate seat in texas as well, which is worth the investment. The demographics of texas are ripe for a pick-up with a massive registration and get out the vote effort in the hispanic community, which takes time. Full play for texas now.

Good points. I'm with you on that. Go all out now and pick up congressional seats even if we don't pick up the state. Its part of the 'long view' that the campaign is taking right now. Plus if we can afford it, it would be great to make McCain spend his dwindling resources on a very expensive, VERY MUST WIN (for him) state...

I am with you, Tena. I really hope that he puts an effort into Texas, because even if we do not win it this time, it amounts to some of the groundwork necessary in order to win next time. Moreover, it makes McCain play defense in what should be his safe base states, which makes the job of folks like myself (in the thoroughgoing swing states) that much easier.

Tena: NO way will he not be focusing on Texas. I am sure it will be done.

We can turn Texas blue! I noticed the map had Texas shaded as a "tossup".
Noriega is running a strong campaign, and there is excitement among Democrats across the state.
Yep, we can, y'all!

Organize, organize, organize. If the Lone Star remains this competitive, I'd pour money in under the radar and make an appearance Sept/October and then one in Arizona. Hero or not McCain needs some dirt rubbed in his face as do Republicans.

Just saw the latest McCain ad on CNN. "Serious Change": Clean energy, portable affordable health care, mortgage relief...very good ad

Did he say how he will do this and pay for it?
My son, as a M.D. Resident, had to research each candidate's health care plan, and he said McCain's was sorely lacking in details, meanwhile, Obama had a PDF file with 50 pages outlining his plan.

Yay! Thanks guys. I really think we are poised to go right over to blue and I so desperately want to get rid of John Cornyn.
As someone said here the other day - Cornyn is probably the only person who could make Fluffy Hutchison look like the smart senator from Texas.

"Fluffy"? Please, please, please tell me that's her nickname in Texas political circles....please.

"Fluffy" Hutchinson. Like "Muffy", only sillier.
(oh, and to all you readers named "muffy" or "fluffy", I mean no disrespect. Or at least, very little....)

"Fluffy" is perfect for her. It's in line with Molly Ivin's nickname for Perry: Governor Good Hair.

Maybe. She's popular.
It doesn't much matter, especially if the lege goes back to the Democrats. The gov doesn't do much - the Speaker runs Texas.

yeah, I wish the US could've figured that out when Bush used being the Tx gov as his experience. C'est la vie.

Well, that explains alot. That's why he had the alleged claim of being bipartisan in Texas, he had no choice. Also, he probably was pissed at having to cave in Texas as governor, so that's why he treated the presidency like a kingship. Fascinating.

Heard it on NPR the other day.
I for one, only carpool and drink with people of Presidential character.

I understand your position.
I'd rather fight for the Fairness Doctrine to be taken up by the congress, that little Reagan Era fuck you, and hopefully Pelosi will do something as she's been hinting at. maybe.
but I understand. I can't help my position either. I'm merely taken the world as is, and accepting it. These are my fellow citizens, this is the media, these are the tools available to me, this is the govt, and I'm trying to do what I think is best for the long view, and for all.
It's meager. I'm one little guy.
I believe fighters like you will get those things done that you are called to, and perhaps there is balance in there (somewhere) with all voices being heard. I'm just singing my song as well, not trying to drown your song out.
I'm glad to see you fighting it out, and keeping my honest.

It would be a truly great year if Obama was in and Cornyn and Craddick (the Speaker) were out. Can't believe Craddick hung on last time. He is the worst!

Oh, and if we didn't have a state board of education that wasn't hell-bent on embarrassing us in front of the rest of the country.
June 27, 2008 5:24 PM | Reply | Permalink
I can't believe Craddick hung on either.
If things keep trending like they did in '06, we stand one hell of a good chance. Judging by turnout in the primaries, I think our one hell of a good chance may just be right now - Obama has coattails and turns voters out.
I thought our state board was doing a little better these days. I was just reading about Jindal bringing on Creationism's last stand in Louisiana. As I recall, the last assault made on our textbook committee by Creationists/Dominionists (anti-environmentalists) failed pretty spectacularly.

Not to burst anyone's bubble but the state board issue is not going away unless we raise hell. My Mom who was an educator for over 30 years and now continues to do work for her school district was in court twice last month fighting the SBE to not allow specific curriculum that is guided with christian undertones in English education. The SBE is pretty close to evenly split on these issues as many on Texas feel that the reason our Kid's aren't doing better is because they aren't reading their bibles properly(snark). But seriously we have to continue to take this issue on, there has only been a handful of traditional media articles/coverage(Houston Chronicle and Dallas Morning News) covering this issue. The culprit behind the introduction of thee new materials(other wise known as the 'alternative' document) is a educator named Donna Garner. One of the highlights of the curriculum is the summer reading list which includes 100 books with a make-up of on no Hispanic authors. I would find it troubling if my Kid was never exposed to any Hispanic literature in our schools. Hispanics are oart of our Texas community just like the rest of us the make up the cultural mileaux(?). Some of the other readings parables and stories from the Bible. I am not against religion but if there is going to be any religion in my life it is not going to be promoted through the state! It will be private!
IF I link correctly this is a great read about the developments up to now
Anyways I would agree that Texas is definitely in play this year and I would also agree that Cornyn must go, he is part of the problem. By the way he has an ad out if you have not seen it called "Big John: Big Bad John" Hilarious if you get a chance to see, might be on you tube! If you guys have not already, I know times are tight, but take a look a Noriega, I believe he has a shot! And we have to get rid of Craddick and Perry or our state will literally be the prime example of Bush's failed system. I am bit cynical after I tried to convince all of my friends and family, mostly unsuccessfully, to not support Bush in 2000 and 2004. At this point the national picture is looking much more rosy in my friend and family network for the Obama crowd, so I agree that many of us have seen firsthand the failures of this administration and its cronies to effectively protect our Basic Rights/Constitution and run a Government bureaucracy. It's simple their policies have run up the debt, asked question regarding our constitutional rights(4th amendment) , mismanaged a war and its occupation on two fronts, mismanaged the DOJ(breaking the law), committed war crimes, and allowed our Business community to effectively guides us down a path of folly and ruin. I know I make it sound so bleak but seriously if Bush is not remembered as the worst Leader of this century and perhaps last then our History will not be accurate and our America will not be the America I grew up in. He is that Bad! Look at this clip via you tube
Let's kick some Ass!

this pep tal was okay, but pretty thin gruel when it's examined closely. First, he said they have a good lead in "most" of the states Kerry won. Not all folks, most. And this is still June. Democrats traditionally are way, way ahead in the polls throughout the summer. Obama barely leads McCain in most polls. Others show something more encouraging and traditional. Nonetheless, Obama's campaign can take nothing for granted, particularly the states he is expected to win in. He is going to have an extraordinarily difficult time winning in states Dems don't typically win despite the rhetoric of being "competitive". The best news in the pep talk was that they do not plan to concede anywhere which is a mistake Democrats have made in the past allowing Republicans to concentrate their forces defending a much smaller battlefield. Democrats can and must run hard everywhere so that the Republican resources are spread thin so we can poke holes in their defenses wherever possible. Regardless of all the details, the election will be a squeaker in the best case scenario. Take nothing for granted friends and remember: losing is always possible so don't take winning for granted.

When Plouffe calmly talks about a "Democratic" win, he is talking out the side of his understandably partisan mouth about the DEMOCRATIC party and not about DEMOCRACY. Because we all know that from the moment Obama refused to limit himself to the public financing of his campaign, his TRUE COLORS came out. His "win" will be anything but Democratic.

There has been a lot of huffing and puffing lately on where Obama really stands on various issues. Is he a progressive pandering to the center to win the GE or a centrist who pandered to left for the nomination? I think progressives are going to be very disheartened to discover it is most assuredly the latter. Nothing in his short political career suggests otherwise. You can rant all you want about clever he is, but it's really how clever he was in getting you to nominate him.
The best way to tell where a candidate stands is to look at his main advisers. Well, so far he has chosen a centrist (actually right of center) economics team that embraces the so-called Chicago school of Milton Friedman, which was the philosophy of Robert Rubin, the arch Clintonite. Now, it appears his foreign policy team is all Clintonites and many are quite hawkish.
Now, I am not suggesting that Hillary would have been more progressive (though she actually may have been on labor issues), just that the evidence is mounting that you guys drank some damn good kool-aid. My main concern is that by the time the GE arrives, you idealists will be so disillusioned that you will vote third party or just sit out the election altogether. I really hope that doesn't happen, but I saw this coming a long time ago.
