Obama Nets Over Almost Two-Dozen Super-Delegates So Far Today
Obama's haul of super-delegates is turning out out to be very heavy today -- and that's before any actual votes are counted from tonight's primaries, increasing the likelihood that he will clinch the nomination imminently soon.
• Former President Jimmy Carter, who had dropped hints for quite a while that he was for Obama, and officially confirmed the news with the Associated Press.
• South Carolina Congressman John Spratt.
• DNC member Ralph Dawson, from Hillary Clinton's home state of New York.
• Massachusetts DNC member Deb Kozikowski.
• Massachusetts Congressman John Olver.
• DNC member Joyce Beatty of Ohio.
• DNC member Jennifer Dechant of Maine.
• DNC member Maria Chappelle-Nadal of Missouri.
• State party vice chair Carnelia Fondren of Mississippi.
• DNC member John Perez of California.
• Six Michigan super-dels, who each count as half a vote: Detroit Mayor and DNC member Kwame Kilpatrick, Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, and DNC members Debbie Dingell, Rick Wiener and Joyce Lalonde, and state party vice chair Tina Abbott.
• Florida DNC member Diane Glasser, who counts as half a vote.
• DNC member Kamil Hasan of California, who has switched from Clinton.
• DNC member Ben Johnson of the District of Columbia, who has switched from Clinton.
• Congresswoman Maxine Waters of California, who is defecting from Hillary Clinton.
• Delaware DNC members Harriet Windsor and Rhett Ruggerio, and state party chair John Daniello. Ruggerio has switched from Clinton.
• Congressman Dennis Moore of Kansas.
• Maryland DNC member Bel Leong-Hong.
• Oklahoma party chair Ivan Holmes.
• Congressman Bob Brady of Pennsylvania.
Score: Obama +23.5, Clinton -3.5.
The Obama camp also rolled out a list of endorsements by Edwards pledged delegates, totaling ten for the day.
According to the Obama camp's most recent math, he is only eight delegates away from securing the nomination.
(ed. note: This post will be continually updated to reflect new endorsements.)

When all is said and done, if Senator Clinton wants any political career at all, she will, of necessity if for no other reason, be enthusiastically supporting and helping the Democratic ticket win in November.

While many of us wish that were the case, some people just can't help turning their backs on the Democratic party and offering comfort and cover to the enemy. If the Democrats weren't smart enough to vote for Traitor Joe then I had every right to sabotage them. I hope Hillary does the same so we can all see her true colors.

June 3, 2008 5:36 PM | Reply | Permalink
Your opinion (complete with fabricated metrics) is not shared by the majority of voters or members of the party as to who is the strongest candidate. And your baseless assertion that race is the reason that she is losing is not just ridiculous, but reveals your ethical and moral failings, not others.
June 3, 2008 5:40 PM | Reply | Permalink
Undeniably spot on.
June 3, 2008 5:43 PM | Reply | Permalink
Wake up and smell the coffee junior. Obama peaked months ago and the only reason he is still ahead in total votes is because the party elites fixed the totals in Florida and Michigan so that he could win. And from this moment forward, race will no the asset that it was in the Democratic primary, and so you won't be able to win by playing the race card or bashing Hillary. So instead of blaming me for throwing cold water on your delusional frenzy, I've got another suggestion"
WAKE the F#$% UP !!!
June 3, 2008 6:12 PM | Reply | Permalink
You are spouting fraudulent nonsense.
As has already been pointed out to you down-thread, the RBC meeting (what you refer to as 'party elites' fixing 'the totals') this past Saturday, the committee voted to give her 69 pledged delegates from Michigan vs. the 0 pledged delegates she had under the existing rules from that state; and give her 52.5 pledged delegates from Florida vs. the 0 pledged delegates she had under the existing rules from that state. In addition she was given the the 7.5 superdelgates who were endorsing her in both states vs. the 0 superdelegates she had under the existing rules from those states.
If they had not done that, Obama would have clinched the nomination outright on Saturday since neither candidate would have gotten ANY delegates form either state as per the rules agreed to by all parties before a single primary contest was held.
June 3, 2008 6:19 PM | Reply | Permalink
Pretty lame argument. Everyone concedes that the Party had to do something to represent Florida and Michigan, and so pretending that they didn't is obviously false. The point is that what they did was grossly unfair to Hillary, the voters of Michigan and Florida, and the rules of the Democratic Pary. And it was done to make sure that Obama could win as quickly as possible. Period.
June 3, 2008 7:09 PM | Reply | Permalink
The party didn't have to do anything actually. It was only for the sake of offering an olive branch within the parties (mainly caused by ginned up narratives from the Clinton campaign in its desperate attempt to secure any delegates they could to remain in the race, which then spiraled into the larger "CW") they accepted the compromise put forward by the state parties.
June 3, 2008 7:15 PM | Reply | Permalink
You're right - they didn't have to do anything. The reason that they did was make sure that Obama won as quickly as possible. Certainly not as some favor to Hillary. Your disingenuousness is astonishing.
June 3, 2008 7:33 PM | Reply | Permalink
Disingenuous? That's your middle name. The party bent over backwards to let Hillary graciously exit this thing BUT NO! Assholes like you (although I still presume you're really a McCain troll) keep making shit up. I swear, you're like Jim Carrey from Dumb and Dumber. Except that you don't actually believe any of the shit you spray, anyway, fucktard.
June 3, 2008 7:41 PM | Reply | Permalink
Actually, as I pointed out just below, your argument here is bunk. If "they" wanted Obama to win as quick as possible, they would have rejected the Ausman petition at the RBC and Obama would have crossed the nomination threshold of delegates this past weekend.
June 3, 2008 7:55 PM | Reply | Permalink
BTW, if "they wanted Obama to win as quickly as possible" as you claim, they would have let the sanctions from last year (which everyone including the Clinton campaign agreed to back then) remain in place and Obama would have had the nomination three days ago.

June 3, 2008 5:41 PM | Reply | Permalink
I guess that if it was a white woman who won the popular vote, it would be nice to have senators who were brave enough to vote for her. As it happens, however, there is no such candidate, so it is hard to see how it might be understood to reflect poorly on the democratic senators if they do not vote for this non-existant white, female popular vote winner.

Actually, Obama only leads Hillary by 20 or so among DNC superdelegates. In fact, Hillary benefitted from a HUGE lead among DNC supers at the beginning of the primary race. Had they not endorsed her so early and padded her stats, the race would not have seem as close as it was.

The DNC did not "rob" Clinton of anything.
If you are referring to the decisions of the RBC on Saturday, they voted to give her 69 pledged delegates from Michigan vs. the 0 pledged delegates she had under the existing rules from that state; and give her 52.5 pledged delegates from Florida vs. the 0 pledged delegates she had under the existing rules from that state. In addition she was given the the 7.5 superdelgates who were endorsing her in both states vs. the 0 superdelegates she had under the existing rules from those states.

Yahhh! The SuperDel floodgates are opening. DemCon Watch has Obama's needed total down to 27.5. Pending endorsements now include: Former President Jimmy Carter, Rep. Jerry McNerney (CA), DNC Ralph Dawson (NY), Gov. Bill Ritter (CO), Sen Ken Salazar (CO), Gov. Brian Schweitzer (MT), Sen. Max Baucas (MT), Sen. Jon Tester (MT) and Margaret Campbell who endorsed Obama but had to back down due to her vice-chair position in the Montana Democratic Party. They are just waiting for confirmation.
I think it's safe to say that he will be going over the top this evening.
Yay Dems!!!!!

I have been knocking on every door in the two mile radius around my house for the last week and a half registering voters. The 20th ward of St Louis is mostly democratic, but traditionally has a low turnout given its size. As such, the Obama campaign has made it a focus to contact every household in this ward personally (via volunteers like myself and my wife) to make sure 1) everyone is registered to vote at their present addresses and 2) the concerns of Clinton-backing democrats are addressed so that no one sits this election out.
I mention this because I look at that poll result and say "who cares?" Polls five months out mean nothing. If polls taken this far out were a reliable indicator of actual electoral outcomes, John Kerry would be seeking his second term right now. If you want to feel excited about Ohio and Missouri (and you should!), don't feel excited about poll results which will change a million times between now and November; feel excited because Sen Obama's campaign is working the grass roots months in advance and taking nothing for granted in these important swing states. We are going to win this by hard work, not stupid, ephemeral poll results.
June 3, 2008 5:12 PM | Reply | Permalink
You are so great to do that, thank you.
June 3, 2008 5:14 PM | Reply | Permalink
I thank you for your kind words, but this is not really about me. I mention myself only because I am the volunteer I know best, just as the 20th ward of St Louis is the part of this state that I know best. The effort is much bigger, however. There are teams working the 3rd ward, the 15th ward, the 11th ward and of course there are also efforts in Kansas City and Columbia and Springfield and Cape Girardeau and all sorts of little -villes and -bergs and -tons throughout the state. I am simply delighted to see the Obama campaign move so aggressively to change the electoral dynamics in this state to ensure democratic wins here in November. This is the sort of movement I have been longing to see organized in this state and I cannot tell you how excited I am to see Sen Obama roll up his sleeves and get it moving.

Why are the other superdelegates taking their time? Is it to give Hillary one last show of dignity? Is the game truly over? Is it as Chuck Todd said today on MSNBC--Obama's party? How about they all declare and let us move on and not have Hillary out there stoking more fires of resentment among women who feel Hillary was owed.
She fought the good fight but now it is over. Superdelegates isn't it time? Enough enabling of petty resentments--when it comes to a choice between a party that has started two wars and has no clue as to how to finish either one and that has virtually bankrupted us and one that offers a bit more hope that we wont keep repeating the same stupid mistakes --Hillary's sense of entitlement pales into insignificance. The message from superdelegates to Hillary now should be keep your ego in check--it has had its 15 minutes of fame--now is time to fight to take back our country.

I think some Supers are waiting for the Polls to close... not sure why.
Ideal circumstances: Obama gets JUST enough Supers to endorse so that the states tonight push him over.
That way, there's no argument that the Supers chose, and not the people.
But, if the 10 or so supers that are needed endorse AFTER the polls close, that works too.

I think we are witnessing a very scripted ending to this historic battle. Every step is planned here on out, including Clinton's speech. I think Obama knows exactly what she's going to say, even if her own campaign denies it.

Sorry to rain on the parade. But:
What is this about Hillary "being open to a VP nod?"
Yes, that means she is, without having the grace to say it, acknowledging that Obama is winning.
However, what could be more diabolic that this statement, on the eve of the night that should be Obama's? He's worked for it, he's earned it; it is his moment in the sun. Now, it's all about whether or not Obama will tumble, a lose/lose dilemma for him.
If he says "yes" he encumbers himself with:
a) the Clinton baggage, as yet unvetted in terms of Bill's income and foundation sources since leaving office (see Vanity Fair);
b) he weakens himself as a candidate by buying into the perception that Hillary must be placated, even though it is she who has sabotaged him, up to and including today;
c) for the greater good, he reluctantly plays the part of the 1950's black man in the south, who said "Yes, Ma'am" because he thought he had to, while the white lady took no responsibility for her own actions.
I am on a rant, I admit, but as a white woman of southern extraction, I am truly nauseated to see this classic scenario play out in 2008.
It is Hillary who owes Obama an unambiguous concession. It is Hillary who, in fact, owes Obama an apology for her Rovian tactics. And it is Hillary who must seek grace, not Obama.
NO,NO,NO to the VP idea. And no more time for HRC's graceful exit. There won't be one. AND IT IS OBAMA's NIGHT, MAKING HISTORY.
June 3, 2008 4:59 PM | Reply | Permalink
I agree. Obama should sit on the VP choice for a couple of months. Let the air finish seeping out of the Hillary balloon. Start putting some other names out there. Let people get excited about who it might be.
See how much Hillary excitement is left by the end of July. Remember, there wasn't much at all in mid-February.

Hate to rain on the parade, but MSNBC is discussing right now that Clinton confirmed on a recent conference call that she would accept the VP spot.

June 3, 2008 5:09 PM | Reply | Permalink
Of course she is.
MSNBC this afternoon had Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell talking about Hillary was trying to make tonight all about her and it was pissed off Obama's campaign because, you know, him clinching the nomination is sort of a big deal. Historic, perhaps?

They are hyping and really overplaying what she actually said. She said she would do anything to help the Democrats win in November.
When she was specifically asked about the VP slot, she didn't immediately so no.
And those stupid twits are the ones who are paying attention to her in the first place.
I hate the media sometimes. A lot of the time. OK. Almost every single day.

That's just the media creating controversy where there is none.
Actually, Hillary openly discussing taking the VP slot is GOOD for Obama, because it confirms she's no longer in the running for President.
Obama has lots of time to decided VP... tonight is HIS night, and as much as we'll hear about "electibility" and "white voters", the only thing I want to hear is Obama's speech.

First off, DICKS...people are still voting in two states, and second, DICKS...virtually of the SD's have said they're waiting until the polls close!
