Obama Campaign Manager Promises Campaign Staff In All 50 States

Obama campaign manager David Plouffe sends an email to supporters promising an unprecedented national operation in the general election:

People like you have been the heart of Chairman Howard Dean's 50-state strategy to rebuild our party and empower Democrats to compete everywhere. We've all seen the energy and enthusiasm at the grassroots level impact races up and down the ballot over the last three years.

I am proud to announce that our presidential campaign will be the first in a generation to deploy and maintain staff in every single state...

Of course, some states will be more competitive than others, and we will scale our resources accordingly.

To some degree the promise of a 50-state strategy in a presidential campaign is a bit of a platitude, since as Plouffe himself suggests, the real clue to the Obama camp's view of the electoral map will be which states get real money invested in them.

But as Ben Smith notes, this is a powerful symbolic move that Obama can well afford. And it puts the Obama team solidly in sync with the DNC as remade by Dean. While some folks scoffed at Dean's efforts, there's no denying that they may have enabled recent Dem victories in red states like Mississippi and Lousiana.

So whatever the impact of Obama's 50-state strategy on the presidential race, anyone scoffing at the Obama camp's insistence that his grassroots organization in red states will lift down-ticket Dems -- and hence is good for Dems overall -- does so at his or her peril. Full Plouffe email after the jump.

Dear XXXX,

I have some news that I wanted you to hear.

People like you have been the heart of Chairman Howard Dean's 50-state strategy to rebuild our party and empower Democrats to compete everywhere. We've all seen the energy and enthusiasm at the grassroots level impact races up and down the ballot over the last three years.

I am proud to announce that our presidential campaign will be the first in a generation to deploy and maintain staff in every single state.

The network of volunteers and the infrastructure built up during the historic primary season -- on behalf of all the Democratic campaigns -- have given us an enormous and unprecedented opportunity in the general election.

Now it's time to expand our network and push our organizing resources even further. No matter where you live, our success this November will depend on your involvement. Sign up to join our campaign now, and we'll make sure you're aware of all the latest news and opportunities to make a difference:

Of course, some states will be more competitive than others, and we will scale our resources accordingly.

But your work building our party means that the list of competitive states will be longer than ever before -- and it will include states like Virginia and Montana where your work has helped a Democratic resurgence at the state level.

And in every single state, no matter what the likelihood that we carry it in the fall, our staff will build volunteer capacity that will provide help where we need it and impact races up and down the ballot this November.

Every day counts -- voters head to the polls in less than five months. This is your opportunity to shape this election and our unprecedented 50-state campaign now:

http://my.barackobama.com/getinvolved

Thanks to your support, we are on our way to building an unprecedented organization for the November elections.

As the presumptive Democratic nominee, Barack Obama will fight to unite our party and win contests up and down the ballot.

But he cannot determine the outcome of this election on his own.

It will all come down to what you are willing to do.

It's time to answer the call.

Thank you,
David

Good. I feel happiness . . . A fifty state slaughter would be good.

user-pic

Is it wrong of me to say I'd prefer a 57-state slaughter? :D

I'd settle for a 270 to 268 electoral college slaughter.

Hell, I'd even settle for 269-269 slaughter provided that the Democrats control the House and the Senate.

William Jennings Bryan had a 50-state strategy and look what it got him!

Yeah, he's dead!

user-pic

And thee weren't 50 states then, either...

user-pic

Point of order: There weren't even 50 states when WJB ran for president.

Aside from that technicality, did he really make a strong effort to campaign in all areas of the country (I realize the analogy doesn't work in any case, but now I'm curious about Bryan).

OOPS... paint my face red, need to read before I post, huh?

Well, at most he had a 45 (and in 1908, 46) State strategy, since NM, AZ, AK and HI weren't states yet, and OK wasn't a state until his third run.

However, it seems Plouffe is forgetting DC, not that Obama has to worry about winning there, but he does need to remember to mention it whenever he talks about "50-states"

And as to Obama's 57 State quote, there were actually 57 delegate selection contests, the 50 States, DC, PR, Guam, VI, American Samoa, Americans Abroad, and the additional Caucus in TX. That he should offhandedly refer to these as 'states' given the question he was answering is perfectly understandable.

Meanwhile, McCain vows to ban beer.

Only beers that have been earmarked, though. Now I'll have to attach my pork projects to Mad Dog.

MD 20/20 -- The label used to say "The Wine of the Century"

'Course, that's the 20th century... so it should stay on McSame's approved list for quite a while. Looks like you're safe!

Something Just Clicked
An Obama Delegate's Road to Politics Began With an Online Donation

SACRAMENTO It all started last summer with a $10 online donation -- her very first political contribution.

With another click of the mouse, 52-year-old Linnie Frank Bailey, a political neophyte, morphed into a campaign volunteer. By fall, she'd taken on the titles of "area coordinator" and "regional field organizer." And by winter, she'd become a field commander of sorts, organizing a 10,000-square-foot presidential campaign office in southern California.

Thanks for this link.

Yep, very interesting and fascinating read. I read it this morning and highly recommend. It reveals the effect of the grass roots effort and the 50 state strategy. It is party building and getting people involved in a major, major way. We could be looking at a seismic shift in american politics and it could be all as a result of a skinny community organizer from chicago with a funny name. Awesome!

But I don't see how this will be able to compete with McCain's 13-Colony Strategy:

“. . . there is no denying that they may have enabled . .”

Yes, certainly; there is no denying that they may have. But if that’s true, then there is no denying that they may have not. Hell, insert “may have” into any phrase, and it’s pretty hard to deny anything!

For the record, I support the 50-strate strategy. I’m just pointing out the weasel phrase.

I may have to endorse that remark.

You guys are tough -- it would be extremely hard conclusively to establish causation on something like this, and the fact that 50-state is a prominent possible explanation is itself politically salient, even if it can't be proven.

I guess this is why they call you the CRANKY historian. ;)

there is no denying that this comment maybe funny

EXCELLENT, THIS IS.

McCain has no idea what he is about to get hit with. Someone needs to tell BO its not polite to hit the elderly.

McCain: 50-state strategy? WTF? Last I remember we only had 48 states. Who went and let those young whippersnappers Alaska and Hawaii in? Even Williams Jennings Bryan didn't try a 50-state strategy!

user-pic

Right on...I may have my problems with Dean, but I think the 50 State Strategy is brilliant and was glad to see Obama put it in play during the primaries, no matter that idiotstick Jerome Armstrong thinks.

user-pic

Word. Good to know.

Love the 50 state strategy, all feel wanted & needed, concentration where needed, will hopefully surprise many people.

ROE V WADE is off the table as a reason not to support Mccain

Pro-Choice Democrats and John McCain

A Commentary By Froma Harrop
Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Hillary Clinton's blessing notwithstanding, many of the New York senator's supporters will resist the handover to Barack Obama. The sexism that permeated the recent campaign still rankles, and John McCain is far from the standard-issue Republican they instinctively vote against.

A big sticking point for wavering Democrats will be McCain’s position on reproductive rights. Clinton's backers are overwhelmingly pro-choice, and they’ll want to know this: Would McCain stock the Supreme Court with foes of Roe v. Wade? The 1973 decision guarantees a right to abortion.

The answer is unclear but probably "no." While McCain has positioned himself as "pro-life" during this campaign, his statements over the years show considerable latitude on the issue.

Disgruntled Hillary supporters who say they will vote for McCain will cut off their nose to spite their face.

“There are estimates and, I don’t know if they’re true or not, that there are going to be a couple of vacancies on the Supreme Court in the next presidential term. I am proud to have played a role in the appointment of some great justices to the Court. I am very proud to have played a role in the appointment, nomination of two great Supreme Court justices Roberts and Alito," McCain said.

This seems mostly symbolic and a fund raising publicity stunt. What exactly does it mean to "maintain a staff in every single state"? Does it mean renting out an office in a shopping mall for a few months somewhere in Podunk, Oklahoma, and staffing it with volunteers? I doubt that it means buying advertising, or devoting the same level of resources as the DNC has done in these states. In that sense, it can be somewhat misleading.

It is what it is - an letter of encouragement to financial supporters to encourage them to give more money, which will be used primarily for advertising in the states that matter.

No it is more the symbolic. The Dems stand to hold a great advantage in funding if Dean, Obama, and the DNC can keep the populist financial support growing. This will force McCain and the rethugs to use their shrinking resources to defend "safe" congressional seats and electorial votes. To begin to correct the damage caused by the Bushco criminals over the last 8 years; we a democratic president AND a large congresional majority.
