Obama Camp Unveils "Fight The Smears" Web Site
Barack Obama's campaign is taking the various rumors about him very seriously, and have rolled out a new Web site specifically to combat them, FightTheSmears.com.
The final straw was the story that there was a tape of Michelle Obama making incendiary statements at Trinity United Church of Christ -- a story that appears to have been based on a political novel. Other phony rumors being addressed so far are that he is supposedly a Muslim, was educated in a madrassa, that his books contain racially offensive statements, and that he won't say the Pledge of Allegiance.

This campaign operation is like nothing I have ever seen as a Democrat in my life. This is clearly yet another advantage of the wide donor base: the ability to fight off the smears with the help from committed voter/donors, and the money to do so.

He really has his sh** together, to (not) coin a phrase. Maybe they can go after Fox for their "baby mama" crap. This is going to be a loooong election season and I'm glad to see Obama knows what's coming and is gearing up to fight it. Kerry always seemed to be a little surprised by it. Or at least unprepared or dismissive, thinking that such outrageous, scurrilous attacks wouldn't be taken seriously. The Democrats seem to have learned the lesson-hit back hard, fast and without mercy.

I posted this over on Dailykos, and on MyDD.com. Hopefully word about Obama's website will get out.

This is terrific. The site should also correct false information about McCain. It would allow Obama to look like a true reformer and someone capable of uniting Americans of all political stripes.

Including McCain & defending smears against him would be an absolutely BRILLIANT move & add HUGE credibility to the site. I hope the Obama campaign gets wind of this idea & takes it to heart. Peace.

Eric lists 5 fake scandals which have hit the news so far.
What's the over/under on the number of fake scandals between now and the election?
I'm guessing about 17.

The editor of Time mentioned it on Morning Joe this AM.
I think that because Obama is an African American and has probably seen a lot more racial hatred than John Kerry might have something to do with his wanting to stay out in front of these smears. He, unlike Kerry, will not be surprised by any attack going forward.

Before Obama, and excepting Clinton, it was amazing how blind Democratic nominees have been to oncoming scandals. It's not just Kerry; Gore, Dukakis, Mondale, Carter all had this same problem. Their response mechanisms have been pathetic.

Actually, to be fair:
1. Kerry did respond to the smears and quite forcefully -- the trouble he had was that he did not have effective surrogates and did not think of using the internet effectively. Notice how beautifully he performed on TV y'day on behalf of Obama -- if only Kerry had had such an effective surrogate, sigh!
2. It is pretty reasonable to expect that people will educate themselves before they vote -- sadly, we are finding out that it is not reasonable!
You are right of course, that the Obama campaign is terrific in responding forcefully with the truth and pushing back with a counter-punch (witness the Carly Fiorina throw back :-).

I thought I read a newsweek article after the campaign failed that squarely put the blame on Kerry for not refuting the swift-boat claims fast enough, as he thought they didn't have credibility and would blow over.
And that Edwards is still miffed at how he handled that.

That was a bum rap on the campaign that is another one of our media "narratives" completely divorced from fact. Kerry was out there vehemently pushing back, he had a few other namby-pamby surrogates out there too and the media itself did some incredible work and pushed back on the baseless swiftees. Unfortunately, all this happened when no one was looking (read: TeeVee blowhards talked around it) in the summer and then the ReThug convention happened with those horrendous purple hearts and Zell and that is all anyone talked about.
The narrative is all that gets remembered. Kerry tried valiantly, with little help from Edwards, I might add. Edwards is like the typical Dem: leave a friend hanging out there when it matters, then carp about it afterwards. They all forget that character witnesses have to be given by surrogates, not the candidate hirself. Look at how beautifully Kerry is doing on behalf of Obama...

It's kind of crazy, you know there's no dirt on Obama so people literally just make shit up. It's interesting that they didn't do this during the primary, obviously not wanting to draw attention to their political 'liabilities'.
Kerry was absolutely blindsided by this in '04, and it's easy to imagine him winning if he had been more effective in combating it.

I know, this is the craziest thing, that there is almost literally no real dirt on Obama that anybody can dig up! I forget who it was, but some journamalist did say this on TeeVee once, earlier this year. I wish I could remember who, when or where...

The Obama operation is a sight to behold! We won't see the memes take root like they did in Kerry's failed bid. Even the asshat Halperin can't help but get woozy by Obama's "killer instincts".

Yup, it was a big headline on his site quite a while y'day and it was thrilling!!! "Killer instincts", beside a photo of the O'bomb! It was a beaut. The Thugs are really running scared of him and that is entirely a desirable thing!
Hope the Dems who thought him too passive during the primaries can see his strategy for what it is: go easy on fellow Dems and fight the Thugs!

Between now and Nov, we will see a lot of these lies about Obama and we know that they are all based on nothing more than a deliberate smear campaign from disaffected right-wing nutters and general lay-abouts who cannot bring themselves to accept the fact that an African-American is running for POTUS. This will take all of us to fight this scare-mongering.Starting here with people like Fogu2,michelle, present and their ilk. We need to send the strong message that: Not this time

I don't think I get it. It seems like the people who would fall for these types of smears would never find their way to this site, so what's the point?
Even if the point is that other supporters are intended to direct their family and friends there in response to e-mail forwards and the like, aren't there already sites like Snopes that cover this territory and presumably have more credibility than a candidate run site?
Publishing the site gets them a day of press attention to the idea that there are smears out there, but other than that, what does this site really do?
June 12, 2008 10:33 AM | Reply | Permalink
It's a resource site like wikipedia.org. It's not up to them to fight these rumors because it's our job to do so.

If you google 527s you find there is a wealth of data on them. Wouldn't it be an advantage to cross reference those sources with the rumors that are slain? Most 527s seem to be funded by BIG rich sources (ref. the WP) and if their names showed up as propagators, that would be excellent.

There are a lot more smears that I've seen floating around, though these are the main ones I've seen. hopefully they'll expand the site.
My repub father-in-law usually shares them with me since he knows I'll reply and debunk them.
The last one he sent was an article describing how obama supports a $4500 tax on all americans to feed the world's poor. It's written up in several places online and the mailer linked to many articles.
It's a flat-out lie that references Obama's bill requiring the exec branch to come up with a PLAN, though not to implement it.

JRCJR:
Don't assume Americans are too smart to refute the lies. Traitor Joe Lieberman and McCain's other surrogates will keep repeating them under the assumption Americans are lazy and if a lie is repeated enough, people will believe it. My stepfather is a doctor in Fort Worth and he still thinks Obama is a muslim who hates Israel. A friend in Tennessee joined a right wing nutjob news group that sends these emails about Obama around the country every day.
June 12, 2008 3:18 PM | Reply | Permalink
are you on his mailing list? would be cool to collect them all and make a resource site so that obama supporters can refer to it when discussing with the "casually informed" voters that believe some of them.
I doubt that the 'fight the smears' site would cover them all, and it is difficult to respond to some of these when they are new. on the tax one I mentioned above, there were quite a few articles online that supported the lie in different ways, but I only found a couple that referred to the actual bill and were truthful.

Did someone already say MercerReader's idea (4th comment from the top) is excellent? Boy if you were in corporate and it was the holidays, this idea would get you a whoppin' bonus check, promotion, corner office with two windows. As a mathematician or physicist would describe this idea as "simply elegant."

I have an idea. If anyone is still reading this thread, let me know what you think.
Suppose we put links on our websites to the "Fight the Smears" site, using phrases like "Obama Pledge of Allegiance" and "Obama Koran." This would increase the likelihood that someone googling those phrases would be led to Obama's site instead of one of the smear sites.
