Exclusive: MoveOn To Close Its 527 In Response To Obama's Candidacy

MoveOn, the advocacy group supporting Barack Obama, has decided to permanently shutter its 527 operation, partly in response to the Illinois Senator's insistence that such groups should not spend on his behalf during the general election, I've learned from the group's spokesperson.

MoveOn's decision, which will dramatically impact the way it raises money on Obama's behalf, is yet another sign of how rapidly Obama is taking control of the apparatus that's gearing up on his behalf.

By shuttering its 527, MoveOn is effectively killing its ability to raise money in huge chunks from labor unions, foundations, and big donors who would give over $5,000. The decision doesn't mean MoveOn will stop spending on Obama's behalf. Instead it will raise money exclusively with its political action committee, whose average donation is below $50 and will even be raising money with things like bake sales starting this weekend.

To put this in perspective, MoveOn's 527 raised $20 million for the general election in 2004 -- and at least half of that came from donations over $5,000.

"This is an affirmation that we, like Senator Obama, believe that this election can be won by ordinary Americans giving small donations," MoveOn spokesperson Ilyse Hogue told me.

MoveOn's 527 has been dormant since 2005, but the group had held open the option of starting it up it for the 2008 election -- until Obama's success with small donors showed that huge sums could be raised without it.

The move could also make it tougher politically for John McCain and the GOP to benefit from 527s, which can raise money in unlimited sums, on his side. While he has generally disapproved of such activity, he recently said that he couldn't control negative ads by such groups.

"The hope is that Republicans will match this, so that the voices of ordinary Americans can drive this election," Hogue said.

Late Update: It should be noted that the group has not traditionally been driven by large donations during non-presidential race times. It has raised $122 million since it opened in 1998 -- and only 10% came in donations of over $5000. But during the 2004 race, of course, it was another story.

Why "permanently shutter"? Why not temporarily?

And this:

"The hope is that Republicans will match this, so that the voices of ordinary Americans can drive this election," Hogue said.

is just laughable. Not the part about the voices of ordinary Americans, but the hope that the Republicans will match this.

Yes, Charlie Brown, Lucy really will hold the football this time.

Ridiculous.

user-pic

obviously, they don't really expect this, CT. This is a way of extracting a negative political price from their 527 efforts

user-pic

Great. So the Dems can claim moral superiority, and their candidate gets slimed, with little counterbalancing.

user-pic

Nope - their candidate will have an enormous amount of resources to fight back this time.

user-pic

And he will be qualified to do so credibly.

user-pic

Great scoop, Greg.

Now take five minutes and get hopping on your next assignment! :-)

I love the "ordinary Americans" line. I'm guessing "ordinary Americans" were in attendance at his $2,300 per person fundraiser in San Francisco when Obama addressed how people from small towns in Pennsylvania feel. I'm guessing those people in Pennsylvania, who probably can't afford to donate to Obama's campaign, are not ordinary Americans.

Pennsylvanian who donated $10 right here. $10 is the price of a lunch out. Not that expensive. ^_~

You are a liar.

This is not about trying to squelch controversial groups.

This is about Obama trying to take complete control of everyone and everthing. And, most especially, the money that would go to the 527s, he wants that to go to him.

Hypocrite.
Liar.
Untrustworthy.
Politics as usual.

You do realise Fogu that you have become a pathetic caricature of yourself with your shameless lack of substance in your weak arguments. You obviusly do not realise that this move effectively pushes the voice of the ordinary american voter up,not at all about money. But that inevitably flew over your empty head did'nt it?

No. Obama want to be the filter for the people.

He will decide what gets heard and no one else.

Add Totalitarian to the list.

Is that definitive?

Yeah, a candidate who wants control over his own campaign message? Unconscionable!

Riddle me this. If Obama acts as a totalitarian then what will happen to his ability to fundraise? He's pissed off the lobbyists. He has pissed off the corporate interests. If he pisses off the people where will he get his money? He has tied his fate directly to us. If we stop giving he is fucked. We know it and he knows it.

user-pic

Well, except that he can do or say anything without any danger that you will get "pissed off." Like, vote for telecom immunity (but hey, he was against it before he was for it); support Joe Lieberman for Senate; adopt the Republican talking points re: Cuba, Iran and Israel; refuse to vote against Mukasey appointment; lie about his healtcare plan.

What, I wonder, would it take for you to get "pissed off" at him? Anything short of getting caught committing a violent crime?

Thanks.

mp

You are either a complete moron, or a psycho, I can't quite tell which...but I'm leaning toward complete moron.

user-pic

The word you are looking for is 'troll'.

Uh-oh! Sounds like someone's come down with a touch of Obamaphobia.

i believe the correct term is baracknophobia

user-pic

No, the new Republican word is Obamanation. The talking heads (wo/ brains) trotted it out last night.

More like Obamadomination.

user-pic

I think a few people are beginning to finally catch on that Barack Obama is America's Tony Blair... a fake.

I know I know, don't feed the trolls, but this is message control... Something we dems are, well, not so great at most of the time. Being a unified Democratic Party is not "Politics as usual"

And party discipline is a bad thing why? Seemed to work pretty well for the repugs to accomplish evil. Maybe Obama can use it for good. Besides, this does a lot to quash criticism of his opting out of public financing.

user-pic

Exactly what about taking control of the message and the money for his campaign as president makes Obama a hypocrite, a liar, untrustworthy and politics as usual?

I don't get the connection - cause I don't think there is any.

Stoopit troll.

user-pic

Well, it might be that his message is not my message. A guy who supported Joe Lieberman in his campaign against Ned Lamont; who claims that Iran is as dangerous a threat to us as the old Soviet Union; who accepts uncritically the Republican talking points regarding Israel and Cuba; who didn't oppose the nomination of Mukasey as AG; whose "universal" healthcare plan is a DOA piece of crap.

And there might be a few million of us for whom that message is decidedly unpalatable.

There is a strong sense among the faux progressives online that the candidate should "control the message" -- i.e., shut up every delivery mechanism except his own. In a more lively intellectual climate, that would be called "propaganda." The purpose of the action is to prevent anyone from committing the candidate to any position (like, say, actually being committed to true universal healthcare, rather than "universal" healthcare).

Thanks.

mp

Barack Obama is just trying to siphon off the progressive energy that Bush aversion has created to his own particular benefit. There is no content

The fact that masses of people follow him like a messiah and treat his unctuous platitudes as if they were the Sermon on the Mount, is why I call him the "Nerd's Mussolini".

I'm sure you an find a pencil and write in Dennis Kucinich if you like. I understand that he must pick and choose which issues to spotlight, which to support and which to drop outright. But he can't be everything to everyone. This is presidential politics, not Burger King.

Yep. This is about Obama trying to take complete control of every message relating to his campaign. Equally, he will take full RESPONSIBILITY for every message coming out of his campaign.

The alternative would be a slimy, shady quasi-independent system in which 3rd party groups could smear his opponent and the candidate could deny responsibility.

I don't see how that is one bit more ethical.

http://obamalondon.blogspot.com

It was voluntary, Obama has no real control over them. Why are you still here troll?

How much does McCain pay you exactly? Does he pay weekly or bi-weekly?

Poor fogu2. The surprise outcome of the primary has driven the poor fellow right off the edge. Hopefully this sort of mania is only temporary and will wear off after the election.

The surprise outcome of the primary
No surprise. the manipulation and outcome had long been predicted. And the continued hatred and misogyny toward Clinton were also expected.
Hopefully this sort of mania is only temporary and will wear off after the election.
This quote should be applied to Obamites with the revision that it should wear off before the convention so that you might gain sanity and support Clinton.

BUAHAHAHAH!

That was really funny! Sad, but HIGH-styerical!

user-pic

They're watching you. You know that, right? Watching. Day and night. Watching. Don't ever take off that tinfoil hat, it's the only thing protecting your from their mind rays.

user-pic

Foghat must not have gotten the memo sent to those who have "sanity and support Clinton":

The way to continue our fight now โ€“ to accomplish the goals for which we stand โ€“ is to take our energy, our passion, our strength and do all we can to help elect Barack Obama the next President of the United States.

June 7, 2008
Hillary's Remarks in Washington, DC
http://www.hillaryclinton.com/news/speech/view/?id=7903

Poor Foghat. He sees Obama gaining the necessary control of the levers of party power and is scared shitless that his real candidate, McCain, is going to lose.

How many 527s has McCain gotten under control? Has he been able to divert fundraising from swifboating 527s to his own badly-in-need venture?

Unfortunately, this isn't an issue that Barack will own by himself. For once, both candidates are pushing back on 527s...
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20080620/pl_politico/11220;_ylt=AusPeSMmvQhKWcNHoB0MDbmM5QcF

Although the article mentions that McCain's condemnation has been less strident lately. Push comes to shove when it is pretty clear that he's losing and there's only a month or so left to go, but in '04, most of the 527s were already up and soliciting funds...

Anyway, point is, both can claim some action on this issue.

horse feathers!

mccain can only claim anything on the issue of 527s if/because the MSM let's him get away with the bamboozlement. mccain has made no efforts to control right/republickin' 527s and has said outright that he's just powerless to do so. if no 527s come out swinging for mccain it's just because there aren't any moneybag nut-jobs that are willing/able to fork over the dough to go to bat for the guy.

And this is a good thing. I would gladly sacrifice th moral highground to have both candidates and their parties acting ethincally while running elections.

(sigh)

Please, people: Do not feed the troll.

True, but if we didn't respond to the trolls a little, we'd really have nothing to talk about.

"Obama's great."
"Yeah, I agree."
"Isn't that nice."
"Yup, I sure hope we beat McCain."
"Me too."

*yawn*

Are you serious?!

The whole idea, at least the one that I glean, isn't that he's trying to stomp on the voice of the people, but rather not be the hipocrite you're calling him out to be when he's arguing that the 527s attacking him are bad whilst there's one out there attacking McCain.

Get a clue.

user-pic

I think it's more likely that he doesn't want any advertising that will commit him to a position -- like, say, true universal healthcare. If some org not in his control lit into the McCain camp about an issue like that, it lines Obama up behind a position that he probably won't want to adopt -- since he is not a Progressive but a DLC Democrat, while orgs like MoveOn tend to be decidedly more progressive.

Obama-bots have drunk the kook-aid and there is no behavior too bad for them to excuse. Look at the contortions they're doing over the FISA vote. You'd really have had to be in the tank for Obama to be surprised by that "I'm against it but I'll vote for it" rhetoric.

Thanks.

mp

Terrific. Also gives Obama a great talking point to McCain: I was able to show leadership and ask one of the top Dem 527s to stop taking soft money. What does it say about your ability to lead when you cannot get people in your own party to abide by your request?

Bingo!

"

That's exactly what I was going to say. It shows Obama in control of the Democratic party ... something that McC clearly has not accomplished on his side of things.

And I can't wait when they go toe-to-toe in the debates and Obama brings this shit to his face.

Politics as usual for fogu and his cronies.

Not this time, my fat little troll.

user-pic

It also means that if Obama goes off message, the infrastructure to hold him accountable will have been mothballed. Same with the voter registration drives: he concentrates his efforts on getting the votes for his campaign and leaves off any voters who might vote Democratic Party but not for him personally.

It is a good policy for the individual candidate and a bad policy for the party.

Thanks.

mp

Okay. So he sends his special psychic shock troops out to sniff out only those people who would vote for Obama and registers them, rejecting all the others who wish to register democratic but foil is sinister mind-control plot.

"Danger, Will Robinson!"

Bake sales?!? I'm actually really excited about the fact that little old ladies baking muffins could have an impact on this election. It has such a local feel, like we're trying to send the marching band to Disney or something... Maybe I'm just getting sentimental though...

user-pic

Greg: great catch.

user-pic

"Floats like a butterfly, stings like a bee!"

8-)

user-pic

I wouldn't do this if I were Move On. I would not let any candidate tell me that I could (or could not) spread messages during the campaign especially if the candidate began taking positions that my members don't agree with. Obama's the best candidate for president, but he's still a politician. Blind trust to any of these guys is buyer's beware.

It won't work, either. THere's nothing wrong with 527s spouting off issue ads. They can't coordinate. It might work for this campaign and this candidate, but over the long haul it's short-sighted unless someone can explain to me how the absence of 527s plays into the small donor strategy.

user-pic

It palys into the abandoning of the politics of personal destruction strategy.

user-pic

Rumpole: I agree. I really feel that we on the left have to hold Obama's feet to the fire. His recent pandering to AIPAC was pretty slimy and disgusting. Search his web site for the keywords: wiretap or telecom and you will come up empty. One of the greatest travesties was just signed into law today granting the telecoms effective immunity for spying on us all and the Obama issue is public funding? Also search for the word: constitution; 2 entries, none related to the destruction of our constitutional protections under this fascist regime. Like I said, we need to hold his feet to the fire. These are the important issues.

Greg said it before but it warrents repeating. If McCain can't fight the 527s, how can he fight Al-Qaeda.

user-pic

Exactly what I was thinking. Makes a great talking point: "If McCain can't handle the GOP's 527s, how's he going to handle al Qaeda? If he can't even get his supporters to fall in line behind him, how's he going to lead the whole country?"

user-pic

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!

Boy, our guy is good! He took some flak yesterday for his supposed "flip-flop" on the public finance issues, and the next day comes out with this. Bet he planned it to play like this all along.

user-pic

He is damn good, innit?

They are so smart. This campaign makes me smile all the time, and that's a first.

God we're going to have a smart president. I've forgotten what that's like.

I know what you mean - can't remember when reading the news has made me grin every day!

These are gonna be 8 good years.

I know exactly what you mean, dear Tena. It is a pleasant surprise to find the democrats acting like the tactically superior party.

Tactically, perhaps.

Strategically, not.

Fogu2, you little troll, you! Troll us again about how Obama took a big "risk" in not supporting Your President on invading Iraq. Troll me a story!

Logically I know this is a good thing - it shows unity and strength in the democratic party. It makes McCain look weak.

But...I LIKE the MoveOn ads. The one with the Patty Duke song is fantastic. They're funny! For sheer entertainment's sake, I want to keep them around.

Any chance they'll just go cheap and viral?

Man. Of. Action.

vs.

"527s are beyond my control. Let's talk about reform some more - can you put up that cue card? Friends...."

The narrative was set the day the nomination was secured, reenforced in the days after with key strategic shifts, and these supergenius pinup posterboys running McCain's operation played right into it.

The GOP will now almost assuredly run hard on the Just Words motif the rest of the season to project a bit.

user-pic

Now that's power. MoveOn's ads were always off beat as it was, and they would have added some visual garlic or paprika to the campaign. In that sense it's kinda a shame that they agreed, but in the sense that Mr. Obama needs to bend over backward to be perfect, and that Soros understands that, I guess I'm OK with it.

Personally I'd be willing to take bets that we'll be hearing the campaign running 30-sec. spot ad competitions within a couple of weeks. There was some very high quality stuff coming down the pipe from MoveOn for this season. Axlerod knows good advertising when he sees it.

Sweet Jesus!

Now what is Bill O Reilly going to say?

my guess: "this shows that obama wants to trick americans into voting for him by hiding from the american people who his real friends are: despicable smear merchants like moveon.org! the american people have a right to know that obama is a hugo chavez loving marxist!"

Anyone notice Obama's "Independence Day" counter? The goal they set yesterday was to get 50,000 donors by July 4 (not new donors, just donors since the Independence announcement). The counter is now at 48,696.

Not bad for 24 hours.

https://donate.barackobama.com/page/contribute/independencefeature

Yes, by all means. Dems and spporters of Dems should take EVERY tool in their possesio noff the table and throw them right in the trash.

Et tu MoveOn?

Un-fucking-believable...

The lefty blogosphere spends thousands and thousands of man/women hours debunking the establishment media, faux news, and the rest of the vast right wing conspiracy, all in defense of the Democratic Party, with the idea being that the Democratic Party is the "party of the people" and better able to implement policies progressives in the lefty blogosphere support.

And in return the Democratic Party takes the impeachment of a gang of war criminals "off the table", refuses, even in the face of the outright refusal of the US Justice Dept to enforce the laws of the US, to even consider using their powers of inherent contempt to hold the executive accountable, refuses to use their power of the purse to stop ANY of the juntas worst policies, let alone the illegal occupation of a sovereign state which is resulting in the death, maiming and displacement of hundreds of thousand of innocent Iraqis and in short just never misses a chance to kick the lefty blogosphere in their collective crotches.

And yet the lefty blogosphere continues to support these useless scumbags.

I gotta admit, but I'm a little bit confused...

Only a Republican troll would refer to it as a lefty blogosphere.

I see MoveOn laying down a marker here. They seem to be willing to front the By The People movement. As pointed out upthread, the risk for Obama is the same as it's always been: if small donors stop giving, he's done.

Which is the way it's fucking supposed to work.

I am furious with the House today. Will Dodd and Feingold not stand up?

user-pic

The question is not whether he is a troll but the veracity of his remarks. Let's be civil. This election is not just about getting rid of the Repulseicans but of electing someone who will restore the rule of law and restore the constitution. It's not just about Barak Obama it's also about the other Dems who represent us and will commit themselves to honoring the laws of our country rather than compromising them in the name of National Security. This is a really important election for us all and we can't afford to roll over as the Democratic party has done again and again, the latest being HR6303 (Telecom immunity, etc) today.

user-pic

"I hope the Republicans will match this."

Yah, sure.

i doubt the republicans will do the same with their 527 which is why i dont like this choice by moveon.org

http://sensico.wordpress.com/2008/06/20/dwc-checklist-4-change-part-2/

Of course not. Nor will MoveOn shutter - just shuttering a channel for a certain type of cash.

This is how We the People take things back, folks. MoveOn is now beholden to all of us under the radar types, same as the Obama campaign.

This is the sound of winning the bigger battle here. Enjoy it. Relish it. Don't be concerned about it.

user-pic

You have to assume the Republicans won't match MoveOn. This means somebody someplace has calculated that Obama is going to raise so damn much money via small donations that big money Democratic 527s won't matter. A lot of movie stars and hedge fund managers are going to have extra money this Christmas.

user-pic

The Obama campaign is going to outraise the McCain campaign, RNC, and all GOP 527's combined.

user-pic

I guess nobody say Obama is all hat and no cattle when it comes to changing the campaigns are financed. I like a guy who practices what he preaches.

If I understand this correctly, MoveOn will be able to continue airing ads, it's just not going to be raising the money from large donations. Sounds like a very smart move to me.

This is what I've come to expect from the Obama campaign: huge risks with which will come either huge payout or huge losses. Wake me when we figure out which.

And "blogosphere"? Sounds a little Hugh Hewittish to me. Looks like we have an angry Town Hall visitor with a potty mouth.

Barak Obama shows true leadership.
John McCain, meanwhile, has his finger in the republican wind and calls himself a maverick.

user-pic

This is great. First, it gives him a great punch when McCain whines about him not taking public financing. Obama can say he showed leadership and is actively shutting down these organizations that McCain says he can't control. If Obama can stop the Democratic 527s, but McCain can't do anything about the Republican ones, what does that say about leadership?

Second, remember that it doesn't eliminate MoveOn. It shuts down the over $5000 donations, but they'll continue with their small donor base.

What republican 527s?

poor reading skills.

user-pic

Agreed, Phoebe Fay.

If the MSM bothers to report this, I think it will have at least some resonance with non-political junkies. Many will remember the "Betray us" flap and the Move On name from last fall. It will mean something to such voters that Obama can silence such a group.

user-pic

So. . . he wants the money to go directly to him because he's going to do what? Buy expensive cars and yachts?

Whether it's MoveOn or his campaign getting the money, the message the money buys will still be pro-Obama, even you should realize that this isn't necessarily a good thing for his campaign; MoveOn was essentially doing some of his job for him, and now his own campaign will have to take up that slack.

As for "totallitarian", wow-- way to make a mountain out of a molehill. That's like me saying "See! fogu2 eats animal flesh . . . he may as well be a cannibal!" Or better, if I tell you to "shut up" does that make me a totallitarian?

Don't call anyone a LIAR here unless you back it up with facts.

I lit up when I heard this story. It's clear that Obama is running this shit.

I lit up when I read that Obama backs the capitulation on FISA.

Damn it, I knew someone else would pick the same avatar eventually! Now I've got to find a new screen name too...

user-pic

Now that MoveOn is shutting down Obama to cave in on Tel Com...What a winner for Obama

Hi All,
I wish that you guys would do something constructive like...

Asking MoveOn to keep the 527 for insuring that any Dem who votes for the FISA treason is no longer in the Congress after their next election cycle. (Hey I don't care if R's are included too)

Asking MoveOn to keep their 527 to file reco suits against the Bush cronies and shutting down the criminal conspiracy they represent.

Using the 527 to advocate the increase of the number of judges on the SCOTUS to return some balance to the Court.

Use the 527 to foster an understanding of the Rights in the Constitution and the Shredding of the same done by Republicans over the last 40 years. (These guys have had a policy of lies from before Nixon came in. It is time to fix that problem.)

Or

How about we use the 527 to talk about what Democrats really think needs to happen next?
Almost all of the systems that helped insure the commons and the common benefit have been injured to the point of destruction.

Oboma is most likely to win but I really don't care about the slightly left of rightwing center that is the corporate Obama.
He is smart, gifted, well educated, young and by god electable but he is only a pencil width better then the Right of center Clintons who are smart, well educated and all of that. Don't we deserve a better future then the ones proposed by these camps?
I am all for keeping the 527 money from involvement in the Presidential elections but there are MANY other issues that do not need to be pointed toward anyone in particular. All of us need to remember that the Republican "Southern" campaign was just catching the Democrat feces floating off the "conservative" South.

What better time to start working for it?

It is time to take out the trash in Washington and to keep taking out the trash until we have what we want.
MoveOn is in good position to let the Pelosi faction know that we are on the way.

Trolls are just paid political hacks and socially inept people who have no knowledge of the subject at hand and want to see us fight. Please don't feed them.

Y'all have a nice day
:D
