In Louisiana, McCain Claims He Voted For Every Katrina Investigation -- Except He Didn't

During his press conference today in Baton Rouge, John McCain declared in strong terms that he's voted for every investigation of Hurricane Katrina.

The only problem, as the DNC has been pointing out to reporters, is he voted twice against Democratic proposals to investigate the levee failures.

After a local reporter at his Baton Rouge press conference asked why he voted against forming a commission to investigate the levee failures in New Orleans, McCain insisted that he supported every investigation -- and added that he was "not familiar" with what the reporter was talking about:

McCain voted against establishing a commission to investigate the levee failures, in a September 2005 party-line vote in which all Republicans voted against the Democratic proposal. He then repeated that party-line GOP vote against a similar Dem proposal in February 2006.

Late Update: McCain spokesman Brian Rogers e-mailed us the following comment:

"It doesn't bode well for Senator Obama's pledges to run a campaign of hope and change when on the first day of the general election he's launching the same tired negative attacks that the American people are so sick and tired of. As Sen. McCain said, he wasn't familiar with the specific votes the questioner was asking about. Instead he was speaking to his strong support for the Homeland Security Committee's comprehensive, bipartisan investigation of Hurricane Katrina, which was already fully underway when these other proposals were suggested."

A senior moment?

I hereby delcare these moments to be his baseline. If/when he acts sane, we'll call those "lucid moments."

I suspect an Obama campaign memo is on its way...

Jesus H. John McCain is going to be shitting in his Depends if the press ever starts doing their job and follows up on stuff like this.

Listened to a few minutes of el Rushbo today on my drive home for lunch and all of the dittoheads were having a pity party over the fact that McCain is such an awful candidate.

Folks, if the Democrats can get past this primary and unite as a party, Obama wins in a damn landslide.

That's really the icing on the cake - despite all of Rush's bluster, we ended up with a general election between the Republican candidate he hates and the Democratic candidate he's scared of.

While eating lunch today Fox News* had this as their headline:

Is the media favoring Obama over McCain?

Then they cut to a story about Rezko and his "ties with Obama." It was pretty humorous.

*I was eating in a cafeteria and Fox News was on the TV's...that's why I was watching it.

Iam scared McCain is such a tough candidate....
300+ electoral vote win for Obama.

user-pic

you know, its entirely possible he did forget.

i mean, he is older than the polio vaccine, the chocolate chip cookie, and the golden gate bridge.

time to start thinking that mccain is the bait before the switch?

I agree. McCain will have a health scare that will require him to be taken off the ticket.

Will Hillary take his place?

Hmmm...scary thought. He truly does just seem like easy pickin's, doesn't he?

McCain and the truth -- a shaky relationship.

user-pic

I swear to God(dess), I really don't think he knows about YouTube or the "tubes". How the hell could anyone running for office make statements like this that are so clearly shown to be false with a 2-second Google search? If this is the way he's going to run his campaign I agree with Mus-Hussein-Grove - it will be a blowout!! :D

user-pic

...and going back and checking....the question was why he voted "against forming a commission to investigate the levy failures in New Orleans." He didn't, he voted against 2 Democrat proposals to:
"...establish a congressional commission to examine the Federal, State, and local response to the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina ... and make immediate corrective measures to improve such responses in the future."

Nothing there about levy failure...

Sgt. Dude,

What part of "devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina" do you not understand?

user-pic

They investigation was into the governments "response" to the disaster... that's all I'm pointing out.

This thread does condone poor grammar. The correct usage is Democratic. I wouldn't consider this elitist, unless a 5th grade level of English proficiency is something to which you aspire.

user-pic

Did you mean to say this thread doesn't condone poor grammar?

Finally, someone who didn't think it was some racist clan symbol. Stay safe!

Where in the hell was Joe...Mr. McFuddle...he was still running from his smack down w/ Obama yesterday in the Senate!

Standoff was today. Here's what it was about:

http://www.washingtonindependent.com/view/lieberman-questions

I'd love to know what was said!

user-pic

Thanks, Aubie.

I can't tell you how much I love this story - it says so much to me on so many levels.

Tells me we've nominated a bad-ass who will take care of his own business!

I'm liking me some Obama!!!!

user-pic

word to your mother!

I'm doing me some serious swooning.

user-pic

Let me refresh your memory, Grampy. You were being Bush's fawning toady and wanted to make sure there wasn't an investigation that might turn up hard evidence of malfeasance and criminal negligence on a massive scale. Ring a bell?

Now that's the Mavericky McSame I've come to know and love. Even rebelling against his own record! You can't get more Mavericky than that!

Eric, did you mean "levee failure?" Anyway, that green backdrop last night really tied McCain's speech together.

user-pic

D'oh!

The error is now fixed. Thanks for pointing it out.

Just watching McCain walking on the stage in LA, he looks a lot older, weaker than I have ever seen before.

I haven't paid attention to McCain for a few months, with all that's going on in our own primary. But he is eroding fast, faculties are reaching their expiring day.

Am I over reading?

user-pic

I gotta agree with your observations. He sounds alot weaker and more tired than I remember and looks a heck of alot older than I remember as well. I don't know, he just doesn't sound all there. Is he losing it in front of our eyes?

Agree totally. He really looked frail last night. I was actually taken aback.

user-pic

He also has a weird twitch/wink he seems to do with his left eye. I'm being serious here: It does nae look good...

And he hasn't even had to campaign! What the hell? How's he going to hold up when he has to actually - you know, face Obama? Remember when our friend, Goofy, referred to their first match up as "elder abuse" and we all laughed. Well...it might not be so funny...

user-pic

My friends. Chug, chug, chug. Whoo, Whooo. The straight talk express chugging along. Too funny. I think with the media spotlight starting to shine on mcbush, he is going to start having some major problems. Thank you.

That notorious temper lurked through his eyes for an instant. It will only be a matter of time.

user-pic

Indeed.

I'll be impressed if McLame makes it through the first debate without losing it.

user-pic

Senile, with a violent temper. Who better to represent the Republican Party in 2008?

user-pic

You should copyright that and sell bumperstickers!

John McCain is so harmless and frail sounding I can't even hate him. Doesn't he have a great grandson he can take fishing?

Don't take pity on him. He's a wild fox, with a bag of cunning tricks. Remember, how he toppled Romney in the last days in FL?

McCain is 'old school dirt' politician.

But I'm worried as well if he is physically capable for a exhaustive campaign? I don't want McCain to survivve and get away on Sympathy.

By the wolf just said, McCain trying to tie Obama to Bush- what the fuck is he talkin about?

user-pic

He is a republican war hawk, if you say that to him he will take you hunting and shoot you in the face.

user-pic

I didn't watch his speech last night; I watched the snips of it that are on the front page of TPM, with the talking heads trying to figure out what the hell had happened - it was that bad.

And god, it was that bad. He fucking looked like a waxwork dummy and delivered his lines like a waxwork dummy with clockwork parts.

It was downright scary. Not to put too fine a point on it - they need to lay off the lipstick - he looked like an upright corpse. And that ghastly background green - holy shit, are his people color blind?

Tena,

OT here, but here's some background on the Obama-Lieberman standoff:

http://www.washingtonindependent.com/view/lieberman-questions

user-pic

Got it, Aubie - thanks!

It was almost as if after ever few paragraphs the teleprompter read, "SMILE to the camera."

user-pic

You missed a freaking trainwreck...

(Though I'm sure that message has come through loud and clear by now...)

McCain has a wonderful tendency to defecate in his own hammock, doesn't he?

Ha! You've a way with words, even without the poetry.

user-pic

Actually he said that the only one he voted against were loaded down wic pork that had nothing to do with helping New Orleans.

I just gave a cursory read of both bills and amendments. I didn't see any obvious pork. I figured at least one would be "loaded down with pork."

Senior moment, or lie?

user-pic

...and neither had anything to do with the levee failure, which is what the question addressed.

user-pic

The dude is displaying incipient signs of dementia.

All Obama has to do at a town hall forum or debate is attribute McCain's lack of specificity or factuality to McCain being confused or fuzzy on the details or just plain mixed up. Lather, rinse, repeat.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Heck of a job remembering your own voting record, John.

Oh boy, is this great!

HA!

Keep in mind folks: McCain keeps trotting out his mother, who is over ninety, as proof that he has a long life expectancy. Of course that is complete bullshit. He might just as easily have inherited his father's gene pool, and he died when he was seventy. It is folly to elect someone who would be seventy two years old when they took office.

You would not let him drive a school bus, you would not let him fly a passenger jet, and I would not let him operate my TV remote. Hell, my family thinks I am too old to do that, and I am younger than John Bush McPain In The Arse; so why the hell would you vote to let him pilot the future of our Planet for the next eight years.

I was just thinking the same thing. My grandfather on my mothers side lived to be 94 years old, and was hunting and doing his own thing up until the week before he died. On the other hand we have already buried three of his seven sons before they reached 75. they all died of massive heart attacks without warning at the ages of 65, 69, and 71. longevity of parent is not an indicator of ones own life expectancy. That said watching Mccain's speech last night all I could think was, this is who the republicans want to represent our country for the next 4 to 8 years? Really? This is all you have? And whoever decided that putting Obama and McCain inn the same room at the townn hall meeting really ought to get paid by the Obama campaign. I can't wait for that visual.

That said watching Mccain's speech last night all I could think was, this is who the republicans want to represent our country for the next 4 to 8 years? Really? This is all you have?

Yeah, like, by landslide. They had nothing else to go on. They're totally screwed. No one else wanted to run on Bush's record.

Here's my latest conspiracy theory possibility...

McCain becomes too ill of health to continue, and has to drop out. The RNC then hand picks a candidate to run against Obama, exactly who they want, and not any of the former primary candidates. Someone fresh, who they feel can quickly revitalize the party.

Jeb?

user-pic

Interesting theory, but I don't think jeb would take it and there is even more bush fatigue in the country than clinton fatigue. Mcbush really isn't looking good. I wonder what's up.

Yeah, that would do it. The Bush brand name is really popular now.

I agree to a point. Bush fatigue is a big factor among us, but I don't think so much for Republicans. I only used Jeb as an example because he's a big name, and they need someone like that to give them the boost that they need.

So, what other big-name party-uniting dinosaur is out there waiting for the call?

user-pic

You know, in this environment I don't think any legit contender would want it. They would get hammered.

he was against it before he was for it.

vote mccain!

McCain is not mentally fit.

Mrs. McCain: addiction is a disease. Theft is a crime. You don't belong in the White House.

God Bless our new President, Barack Obamma and First Lady Michelle.

I swear I'm going to rip these nails off, Obama (sp)

Let us keep it simple.

Treat McCain like he would treat his opponent. He did not forget. He flat out lied.

McCain is as big a liar as Hillary was about Tuzla.

Keep pointing out that he is completely untrustworthy. He is a liar. You have the proof. Spread the word. Drive up his negatives. McCain can not be trusted to level with the American people.

What else has he being lying about.

What else has he being lying about.

Election reform. Hamas. The GI Bill. Iraq. Iran. Sunni and Shia. The military. Foreign policy. Terrorism. Our security. FISA and telecom amnesty. Free speech. Mortgages and housing (Phil Gramm a major banking/mortgage lobbyist wrote his policies. Sell out much?)

I agree with Obama. McCain touts his Iraq visits and says Obama is out of touch. I want McCain to visit some inner cities and then we'll see who's out of touch.

user-pic

Don't forget Mr. "I don't know much about the economy" also voted against the minimum wage increase. Money that directly helps those who struggle from paycheck to paycheck.

McCain, what a toolbox!

If you don't like what the truth is just deny it!

It worked for Bush - Why can't McCain do it too?

Ageist, don't you realize that to republicants facts are whatever we are saying they are today?

He said he voted against one that was filled with pork. Was it porky? Was the other? I'm disinclined to believe him but would be interested in knowing.

The more McCain talks the better for BO. he is just giving Dem 527 ammo.

They say McCain is better in these town halls and that maybe true, but he is also very gaffe prone in these settings as well. Every time he made a gaffe in this campaign it was during an unscripted press conference or town hall.

user-pic

Anyone else sick of being lied to?

user-pic

Yep, big time. I wish they would just be honest. Mcbush has no credibility. The clintons have no credibililty. It really is pathetic.

Man, I couldn't watch that whole episode of veracifier about McCain's speech.

He really looks physically awful. I felt uncomfortable just looking at him. I guess I'm age-ist now, but I think it's going to be a major major problem for him. He's got the next 5 months under a spotlight.

user-pic

Senator McCain has just released a statement to his supporters about his speech last night and the campaign to come:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/06/about-last-night-a-message-fro.php

Ever wonder what a conversation must be like with McCain and Lieberman? They both talk so slow I'm sure they lose track of the subject before they get to the finish.

user-pic

While their at it, some folks ought to ask him, if, as he states, many mistakes were made in Iraq, which mistakes were brought up by him... which bills were introduced by him in the Senate in order to rectify (and hopefully cut back the deaths of our soldiers), and which ones he simply ignored until he decided to run for the presidency....

I love how he pronounces New Orleans. I think he added a couple extra syllables. More evidence of how clueless he is.

Summary of the McCain camp's response:

How dare the Obama campaign point out our mistakes!

McCain is such a flip-flopper his new nickname is Johnny "Whiplash" McCain. I can't wait to see him dry humping Bush and Falwell on an endless youtube loop. Go, Johnny, Go.

user-pic

I love the e-mail from the mcbush camp. Tooooooo funny. This is going to be a fun and interesting general election. Go Obama.

user-pic
"It doesn't bode well for Senator Obama's pledges to run a campaign of hope and change when on the first day of the general election he's launching the same tired negative attacks that the American people are so sick and tired of."

ok....when did this happen? when did obama attack mccain?

My friends, that's what i said yesterday. It is no longer relevant till tomorrow, my friends.
What did I say Oh yeah, lets have some debates, no town meetings Ahhh forget it.

Hooo boy...

This statement is so full of bounty it's hard to choose.

First off, what, in particular, "doesn't bode well" WHat the hell does that mean?

Second, again with the "our candidate's not good with details or facts so don't bother us with calling us on not knowing them."

Third, how can the McCain staffers be running this campaign as if the communication technology is back in the 80s?

If it keeps going this way, McCain will position himself as utterly incompetent.

So a negative attack is one in which you point out the "misspeaking" of the rival candidate?

user-pic

No, a negative attack is when you point out the company a candidate keeps. It's also racist.

user-pic

Wow, did anyone else catch the bit on Fox where Bill Kristol says the McCain campaign planned this speech a few weeks ago to happen on the night Obama clinched the nomination "and I told them I thought it was a good idea but after seeing the speech I don't think it was a very good idea"??

Yeah, Bill, that's the way it usually goes with your pinheaded neofascist ideas, like invading Iraq, and attacking Iran. They're great ideas--until someone actually tries them, you dumbass.

How does this bozo end up on TV and in the NYT??

Thanks for this story. I'm a blogger in New Orleans and we really do need all the national help we can get.

McCain's comments were a total distortion of his record. He has been using Hurricane Katrina to take his shot at distancing himself from the President. The fact of the matter is that when push came to shove in the Senate, he voted to shield the administration from accountability on Katrina response and levee failure.

The Congressional investigations of Katrina were dictated by a Republican Congress and failed to live up to the standards of an independent investigative body. Levees.org continues to call for an independent commission.

At my blog
, I point out that the McCain spokesman's response to TPM is also bogus. He claims that "bipartisan" investigations were "fully underway" when McCain voted against the bills. This was not true for his first no vote, cast on September 14th, 2005. This was the day BFORE the Senate Committee was launched.

My Dad got caught up in the 'behind the story' episodes of the bands of the '70's when they were being aired. I asked him why, he said he had been serving on a submarine during the 70's, and had really missed out on the music of that time. Maybe Mccain missed out on...the industrial revolution or something, and just doesn't get that everything he does, says or overtly implies will be recorded for all time for anyone to see?

Why is the McCain person bashing the Obama Campaign? This question was by a reporter, not Obama???

They are already going off the deep end.

McCain's Campaign is the Long Halloween for more reasons than one.

You're completely right.

What is this all about?...

"It doesn't bode well for Senator Obama's pledges to run a campaign of hope and change when on the first day of the general election he's launching the same tired negative attacks that the American people are so sick and tired of.

Are the McCain campaign getting paranoid? Because it looks mighty contradictory to start levelling attacks at your opponent needlessly, when that is what you are supposed to be shocked about.

Maybe they just needed to let of steam after realising there is another flip-flop they have to defend.

Stop making fun of the green Magicam backdrop behind McCain. It's there for important, orthodontic reasons.

For example, if John H. McFuddle loses one of his teeth during one of his bizarre, quizzical, forced smiles, the tooth can be put back into his mouth during post-production.

See? The Post-Rove team has thought of everything!
