McCain Doesn't Quite Cancel Controversial Fundraiser

John McCain's campaign has arrived at a new solution in canceling their planned fundraiser with controversial Texas oilman Clayton Williams -- a compromise that allows them to both distance themselves from a man who would seriously complicate their efforts at outreach to women voters, while also getting access to the money he's helped bring in.

The original fundraiser, planned for Monday, was cancelled after Democrats publicized a statement about rape that Williams had made during his 1990 campaign for governor, and which had arguably cost him the race.

The fundraiser will now be rescheduled for later this summer at a new venue. All the people on the guest list that Williams had organized will be invited -- just not Williams himself.

O shit - Not Clayton Williams.

I hadn't heard that name in years. Mainly he's just an idiot. He must be an ancient idiot by now, too.

Well, that makes him a good match for McCain on two counts then, doesn't it?

I owe Clayton Williams big time.

Before he ran for Texas governor, I was ready to vote straight ticket GOP. In fact, I was a charter member of my college's Young Republicans group.

Then I saw who the GOP put up for governor, and I realized I could never vote straight ticket. And the Republicans have been alienating me more and more ever since.

Well, then thanks for small favors :-)

Well, thanks to him, we got the great Ann Richards, but for McCain to act like he didn't know about this man's statements is impossible. This story was massive, and Arizona isn't that far.

If Obama can be crucified for knowing someone, then McCain should be drubbed for this.

McCain is a fruad he thinks he can just skate by this controversy he need to think again

Weasel.

John McCain: like a straight talker, only with lies.

Like straight talk...plus!

Hagee, Parsley, Williams, etc...McCain must be saying to his advisors, "Is there a way I can get these guys' supporters and money without people actually knowing it?"

His campaign staff should be working for the great Detective Clouseu.
I know why thy keep making these mistakes, they are trying to make Bushy and Dead Eye Dick look good.
They are making the GOP look like geniuses.

John McNoShame also says: "I hate war".

He looks into the camera and says those very words.

How are we supposed to gauge how much Senator McNoShame actually "hates war"? Why the answer is right in front of us; he hates it so much that he is only able to stomach another hundred years of it in Iraq.

Can you say Nobel Peace prize winner, boys and girls?

I swear, McCain could be a 108 and talking about nothing that makes any sense (like now) and he would get votes because the bi-racial guy is just to scary for so many older white guys, who cannot support Obama. This is the only demographic that has Obama down by 20%. Pathetic.

rather, too scary.

While on the verge of being an older white guy, I really don't think it is necessary to put us all in one boat. I and most of my older white guy friends (along with all of my other friends) have voted against "white guy" voting trends for our entire lives. It doesn't make your stereotyping less offensive.

Marquis: Please note, I did NOT say all older white guys, hey, I live with one. I said many, and I am well aware there are several posting here that are extremely bright guys. But one still cannot ignore the stats, and obviously there is a huge problem with this group of voters. You are not one of them, I realize that fact. I would also agree that your friends would be like minded. So are our friends. But there are many at my spouse's job that are on the McCain wagon, in fact, they are all white and not one of them supports Obama. In their case, I can honestly say it is about color, sadly.

Check this out. They are going to bring this up every time Michelle Obama is attacked. Very good idea. Not enough people know all about Cindy.

Good for you, Senator McLame. Way to endorse the guy without... well, endorsing the guy.

Meh, I really don't even care. I'm so sick of this guilt by association by random comments two decades old, who cares? If the guy was an advisor then maybe it would matter but still barely. I care about conflicts of interest, but this? C'mon. I guess he probably has it coming after his Hamas crap and all the other crap they are no doubt going to try to throw at Obama, but I just think it is stupid. McCain gives us legitimate ammo to use against him every single day with his nonstop "gaffes" (read: flip flops, lies and ignorance), we don't really need to mess with the guilt-by-association mess.

Yes we do -- everything must be used. In fact, this one is perfectly valid --- after all, this whole thing came as a 'surprise' to Bonzo McChimpy's campaign when it was a matter of public record. Error theirs. Thus it is valid.

Well, when fundraising is inevitable, McCain just lies back and enjoys it.

*goldclap*

ughh...GOLFclap

You get the idea. Funny and cringeworthy in an impressive way.

The joke by Clayton Williams is probably one of the most costly jokes in US History. If he doesn't get caught telling the joke, it is doubtful he loses to Ann Richards. If he is the incumbent, GWB doesn't run for TX Governor. Without that stepping stone, GWB never becomes president, or at least is not president on 9/11.

What an terrible joke, in more ways than one.

I lived in Austin at the time Clayton Williams was running.

If I recall correctly, he had invited a bunch of reporters to go out camping with him or some such and made the off hand comment that if a woman was going to be raped, she may as well lay back and enjoy it.

He lost the race, against Ann Richardson I believe, and I have never heard his name mentioned again until now.

McCain really is a class act...
