McCain Campaign Using Hillary's "Commander In Chief" Line To Attack Obama
This seems significant: The McCain campaign, as predicted, is already using Hillary's "commander in chief test" line to attack Obama.
With the general election set to begin, the McCain camp emailed out this now-notorous video of Hillary a few weeks ago putting herself and McCain on the same "commander in chief" plane and saying that all Obama has to bring to the table is "a speech that he gave in 2002"...
I got in touch with McCain's internet guru, Patrick Hynes. He made their strategy on this as clear as you could want.
"Senator Clinton articulated the fundamental difference between John McCain and Barack Obama as well as anyone," Hynes told me.

This is why I am reluctant to allow Senator Obama to be my Vice President, despite his constant pleas.

God I'm watching McCain right now in his speech before the polls start coming in from SD and he just used the Clinton worthy line "pundits and party officials decided Sen. Obama is my political opponent".

But did Clinton provide these ready-made GOP ads for nothing in return? It hardly seems fair. McCain should at least pay off some of her campaign debts, or offer to let her be in his cabinet, or something. Maybe even choose her as a running mate, since he's already lost most of the wingnut vote. Would you vote for a McCain/Hillary ticket?

Sad but inevitable.
Fortunately John McCain is so horrible a candidate that the next five months will make it obvious he's barely capable of passing a spelling test, let alone whatever "Commander in Chief" test Clinton had in mind.
In the long run, her support of that moron is going to cost Clinton more political capital than her attacks on Obama. Much the way David Frum is trying to make people forget the fact that he called Dubya Bush "The Right Man".
Also, as was said, she ain't gonna be VP.

If you can find the video of his recent speech before AIPAC you will see what I mean. He made some dire remarks about the Iranian President wanting to launch a new Holocaust against Israel, and then McCain paused and showed his patented self-satisfied little smirk. It said; boy did I not just get off a great line. He is down right creepy.

"Does Hillary (or anyone) STILL think this primary has been good for the Democratic party???"
Rhetorical question, I know, but I'm going to play devil's advocate and say it was a good thing.
McCain's final share of the popular vote is written in stone. The long Democratic primary has kept his support artificially inflated, which will make the drop seem that much faster.
By September, this race will be Obama versus the Dogcatcher. By October, McCain won't even be that.
June 3, 2008 9:06 PM | Reply | Permalink
Yes, I think so.
The Democratic primary horserace has yielded a lot of new voters. Turnouts and new registrations have been record-breaking.
As for November, McSame doesn't stand a chance (IMO). The anti-Republican tsunami that's coming cannot be withstood.
That's why I do not begrudge Hillary her choice to remain in the race until all the primaries are over. And satying in the race means putting a brave face on an obviously lost cause. For her, the denial is feigned; for her supporters, though, the denial is real.
Once the dust has settled, Hillary can mend almost all of the rift she's torn in the Democratic fabric. I predict that will happen. She will become an enthusiastic Obama supporter, and her followers will come around, too. And, thanks to her staying in the race, there will be plenty of them.
Me? I'm an Obama supporter and contributor. Woulda been just fine with Hillary as the nominee (or Edwards or Dodd for that matter), but the degree of Hillary's feckless pandering and triangulating is rather discouraging. Yeah, Obama does that too, somewhat, but not nearly as much.

McCain always pauses and gives that little simpering self-satisfied smirk after he delivers what he believes to be some good lines. Sometimes he does it at the most inappropriate of times.

Nixon was charismatic. 'I am not a crook' takes a lot of charisma to say with a straight face. The only sort of face Nixon ever had.

I'd say that, counting me, about 77,002,749,025 people predicted that McCain's first anti-Obama ads would feature Hillary Clinton.

OMG, Tweety is waxing poetic - but it's strangely touching and I think he's really moved by the historic nature of this nomination. I have tears in my eyes watching him and Keith right now.

As someone mentioned earlier, McCain in his speech tonight stated that "pundits and party officials decided Sen. Obama is my political opponent". He said this while heaping much praise on Hillary in an obvious appeal directed toward her disaffected supporters. A clever and cynical attempt to exploit a fresh and festering wound.
This disaffection was instilled, enflamed, and maintained in Hillary's supporters by Hillary herself. And only Hillary can heal it and bring her supporters back in line with the party's objectives.
A tremendous amount of responsibility now lies on her shoulders. How she discharges it may very well determine the course of our country.

"As someone mentioned earlier, McCain in his speech tonight stated that "pundits and party officials decided Sen. Obama is my political opponent"."
Not to a stray too far from the main part of your commentary Craig, but when I first saw McCain say that - I immediately thought that Obama should answer with: "..a bored republican electorate and less than stellar candidates in the republican primary decided Sen. McCain as my political opponent months ago"

Something tells me that McCain exploiting Hillary Clinton's image and words will do more to unify the democrats than anything Obama could ever do.

I am massively convinced it won't happen, but by some "known unknown" (d.rumsfeld) John McCain became President I shudder to think what would happen to this country. JohnMcCain is simply not mentally fit for anything near the presidency. The ravages of old age are visibly escalating and the man can't seem to string a simple declarative sentence together without a teleprompter. to wit the recent speech he gave lapsing into 4 full minutes of silence when it malfunctioned. His wife is an absolute horror having stolen drugs from the poor at a charity function, and who now makes the talkshow tours touting how nobly she handled her addiction.
Thank God that Destiny selected Barack Obama at this very time when he is so sorely needed.
