Lieberman Skips Senate Dems' Strategy Meeting
Joe Lieberman's support of John McCain is starting to generate some readily apparent conflicts with his participation in the Democratic caucus. When Barack Obama's top strategist David Axelrod briefed the Senate Dems' weekly policy lunch yesterday, Lieberman skipped the meeting.
"It was my decision," Lieberman said. "I thought it would be awkward for everybody."
This begs the question: Will he start attending the Republicans' policy meetings?

I thought that he already was.

yeah thats what i thought, plus he'd better not be attending the democrats strategy meeting they are probably talking about him which would make for an uncomfortable meeting
McCain's so called straight talk on the environment
Candidates on equal pay.

Poor Joe Lieberman, stuck in the middle, neither fish nor fowl . . . just slithering his way from party to party wearing his oily smile and an Independent fig leaf.

To "beg the question" has nothing to do with a situation anthromorphically begging a question. A situation never "begs the question". Begging the question as to do with circular logic and tautology...just saying.

beg the question
Eric's sense of the phrase is a useful mutation in English, I would say. It makes so much more sense.

I think "raise the question" serves an equally useful purpose in English without distorting the original meaning of the phrase "beg the question" as it applies to logic.
Accepting this new mutation (which at this point I think is more accepted than not, although not by a wide margin) really only adds confusion to a language that doesn't need any additional confusion.

There's already a perfectly useful phrase in English for that: "raises the question."

Does anybody know any good songs for a divorce party?
Yesterday,
All my troubles seemed so far away,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Suddenly,
I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh, yesterday came suddenly.
[...]
Yesterday,
Love was such an easy game to play,
Now I need a place to hide away,
Oh, I believe in yesterday.
Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.

John Prine's Jesus the Missing Years album was written during his divorce. Lots of good stuff there. Sorry in advance for the length of this post!
All The Best
I wish you love
And happiness
I guess I wish you
All the best
I wish you don't
Do like I do
And ever fall in love with
Someone like you
Cause if you fell
Just like I did
You'd probably walk around the block
Like a little kid.
But kids don't know
They can only guess
How hard it is
To wish you happiness
I guess that love
Is like a Christmas card
You decorate a tree
You throw it in the yard
It decays and dies
And the snowmen melt
Well I once knew love
I knew how love felt
Yeah I knew love
Love knew me
And when I walked
Love walked with me
And I got no hate
And I got no pride
Well I got so much love
That I cannot hide
Say you drive a Chevy
Say you drive a Ford
You say you drive around the town
Till you just get bored
Then you change your mind
For something else to do
And your heart gets bored with your mind
And it changes you
Well it's a doggone shame
And it's an awful mess
I wish you love
I wish you happiness
I wish you love
I wish you happiness
I guess I wish you
All the best

Everybody Wants To Feel Like You
I wake up to a clock that's ringing
Birds are singing on my telephone line
I work all day and I chase my woman
Why don't she chase me sometime?
Everybody wants to be wanted
I mean I ain't no scarecrow cop
I don't need no transalazation
I don't need no diddiley bop
Next time tell me that you want me
Put your little foot inside of my shoe
Next time tell me that you need me
Everybody wants to feel like you
I used to love you so hard in the morning
I'd make you stutter and roll your eyes
I put your mind on a brief vacation
To the land of the lost surprise
You got a heart that beats like mine love
You got a bell that rings so true
I get this feeling that I got to tiptoe
Round every little thing you do.
*****
Take a Look at My Heart
I seen my old lady's boyfriend
He don't look nothing like me
'cept for a bit of confusion
Same kind she laid on me
You don't know what you're getting into
She's gonna tear you apart
You're going places I've been to
Take a look at my heart
Take a look at my heart
You're pro'bly sending her flowers
And talking to her on the phone
You're gonna get it together
And find yourself all alone
Do you think you can be her lover
And not become her fool
Do you think that you are the exception to the rule
You're gonna hate all her girlfriends
And everything that they say
You ask me how do I know this
They come around every day.

Way Back Then
Night is falling
We're doing the things we do
You are acting just like me
I'm acting just like you
Do you remember
When you were my friend?
That's the way I'd like things
Just like way back then
Baby's sleeping
Brother is on the run
I am out undoing
All the good I've done
If you loved me
Tell you what I would do
Wrap the world in silver foil
Bring it home to you.
Lately I feel
That I can't pretend
I may never ever see
The likes of you again
I take a walk, I come back home
Then I sit a spell
Watch the ponies dance around
The empty wishing well.
Night has fallen
I've said the things I did
The only baby sleeping
Is when I was a kid
Do you remember
When you were my friend?
That's the way I'd like things
Just like way back then.

Should be:
Midnight fell on Franklin Street
And the lamp post bulbs were broke.
For the life of me,
I could not see,
But I heard a brand new joke:
Two men were standing upon a bridge.
One jumped and screamed, "You lose!"
And left the odd man holding
Those late John Garfield blues.

Only a few more months and we can tell Joey to go f*ck himself. He won't get re-elected. He won't have a plum committee assignment. He won't be in the Obama administration. There won't be a McCain administration.
Soooooo sad. Good riddance to bad traitor trash.

Lieberman remains Democratic oriented on social and economic issues . . . While going insane and hyperagressive in the face of fear.
Hagel remains recessivist on all progressive issues. Hagel is not anti-war . . . Hagel is anti-engagement . . . Those ideals are NOT the same thing.
2000 broke Lieberman. He is the Party of one. DEMs should not totally shun him . . . That would be Republican-like.
Embracing Hagel because his desire to withdraw from the world mimics anti-occupation ideals is akin to insanity. Hagel is a backwards-ass bastard that needs to be treated as such.

I think Democrats might be able to accept Lieberman, even with his pro Iraq occupation warts (that position will become irrelevant next January), if he wasn't actively campaigning for the Republican presidential candidate and routinely attacking the Dem candidate.

Joe is a dangerous rogue. He has little to lose, he won't win another term, and has no future with the DNC. That means he is unrestrained by anything, and probably bitter. I think he is trouble.

I just called Senator Reid's office to ask for Lieberman to be excluded from these meetings in the future and to express my displeasure that he had been welcome to these meetings at all.

Good.
Because if I were one of the Dems in that strategy meeting, I wouldn't want JoeL anywhere even close to the meeting room. I'd also want it checked for bugs.
I think he's working for the GOP, and has been for years.

Great, they can lose with him just like we did.
I'm confused by his inclusion on any ticket. Not that Presidential politics should be a beauty contest, but Lieberman is uncharismatic in many many ways.

It would have been really awkward attending the Dem strategy meeting while he was on his hands and knees receiving the attentions of McCain and Cheney. (Sorry for the nightmare optics.)
Why is this guy anywhere near the Dem caucus? Clearly he can't be trusted on ANY vote going forward. So just cast him out and let him run to his new Sith masters. Show the world we have a little sense of principle left. He will be shown to have none.

It's been a few months since my last post, and my, how things have changed. Not Lieberman, though - I can always rely on him for my recommended daily dose of righteous indignation.
And an OT aside to Leszak: Just about anything by Death Cab for Cutie applies to a break-up. Try "Crooked Teeth," "The Ice Is Getting Thinner," "Cath," and/or "The Marching Bands of Manhattan." For something really ugly, check out Warren Zevon's "Finishing Touches."
