Hillary: Obama Will Be A Good Friend To Israel

In her speech before AIPAC today, Hillary really does appear to extend Obama an olive branch of sorts and even seems to tacitly acknowledge that the race is over...

I know Senator Obama understands what is at stake here. It has been an honor to contest primaries with him. It is an honor to call him my friend. And let me be very clear: I know that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel.

The key word there is "will." It isn't much, but it's something.

Great first step.

Great second step: concede.

Great third step: withdraw your name from consideration for VP.

Great fourth step: campaign for him enthusiastically.

user-pic

Nope on fourth step, the clintons should just give one speech renouncing all their bullsh*t, claim that the process was fair and that they lost fair and square, and then just go away. The Clintons suck as campaigners and I am sure they couldn't bring themselves to say anything positive about obama anyway. It would be all about the clintons. Just go away.

The Clintons suck as campaigners...

Come now, dear Michael, clearly this is nonsense on stilts. If the Clintons were such terrible campaigners as you claim then we would not have had such a hard time beating them. I grant you that Obama is clearly the better campaigner, but that does not mean that the Clintons are not themselves a force to be reckoned with. The narrow finish on the last day of voting testifies to the enormous strengths which Sen Clinton possesses as a candidate.

user-pic

I don't know about that. Suck may be a strong word, but which campaign had more foot in mouth incidents? Mr. bill was constantly saying inappropriate things. Senator clinton every once in a while. Obama, rarely.

On the battle, in my opinion, the battle was over the clinton brand from the 90's and alot of the votes they obtained were as a result of the brand more than their campaign skills. Alot of people, rightly or wrongly believed that voting in the clintons would return the nation to the 90's viewed through rose color glasses. I really don't think its attributable to the campaign that was run. Look at the florida results by way of example. Also, the clintons couldn't hold a lead in any of the states. Generally, they started out 20 points or more ahead and lost that lead in state after state. Anyway it is over.

user-pic

Well, maybe she is going to pull it together. I hope she does - I don't like the conflict.

I'd so much rather be bashing McLame and John Cornyn and John Boehner and Karl Rove and George Bush and Dick Cheney and Kindasleezy Rice, et al, than fellow Democrats.

Please, Hillary - stay on this note. Please.

Kindasleezy Rice
Tena, you really are a hoot...LOL

The party ranks are closing thus she has too concede this week if she doesnt want more embarrassment.

I agree. A concession becomes less and less relevant the longer she holds out. Not much point in conceding when all the horses have crossed the finish line and are back in the stable and all the bettors have gone home.

The only way she becomes relevant again is to concede and rally her supporters around Obama. Otherwise, she's yesterday's news.

It isn't much
You're right
but it's something
And you're right
user-pic

That was just a brief moment, she is now saber-rattling. Denouncing diplomacy. Basically she is calling Obama's diplomacy bullshit.
And came close to the obliterate Iran statement (without using the word)

Same old bullshit.

user-pic

"...to contest primaries with him."

Caucuses, not so much.

maybe the screaming from her speech is causing her to rethink.. Honestly, if she wants a shot in the future she need to really fall in line. as for vp, most serious candidates will disavow any interest. she killed any remaining posibility last night anyway.

user-pic

Ah well -

baby steps - I guess Hillary is going to get there with baby steps.

laters, y'all. got thangs to do.

She looks hung over today. Check out the bags
under her eyes.

I thought that too.

user-pic

Of course she is hung over.

Last night she said "stay the course." How drunk does a democrat have to be to use that phrase?

Clinically nuts.

"...tacitly acknowlege that the race is over" ???

She is outlining a harder-line policy in support of Israel that SHE would endorse...not supporting what Obama just said.

She's completely out of line here. She is trying to whip up a counter-revolution to support her dead candidacy. She can speak as a legislator all that she wants, but she doesn't sound like a Senator backing loan-guarantee legislation, she sounds like a presidential hopeful, still.

Ho Lee Fuck!

Nuts and nuclear!!

It's time to drop Clinton narratives, isn't it?

Clintons exceeded their own expectations last night- disgrace found new lows and blackmail became more public.

user-pic

Well, for all of my bitching about her, she seems to be taking baby steps (as Tena said), so perhaps this is the start of the end. And, as Al Giordano from the Field posted last night, she seems to be following the schedule that he thinks she will take (he believes she'll concede by Friday at the latest):

http://ruralvotes.com/thefield/?p=1312

And here's an awesome picture of Michelle and Barack before his speech last night (the fist bump):

http://bagnewsnotes.typepad.com/bagnews/2008/06/the-clinch.html

I love that photo - I love the look on her face - they're not getting all mushy and kissy, but gesture is very intimate and supportive. They are going to make an AWESOME first couple, aren't they??? :D

user-pic

my favorite was when barack began to speak, and michelle was moving off, he put his hand on the small of her back. very intimate, but not lewd.

that was totally cute. later, they bumped fists too! what an engaging couple!

Great photo! I like the poster's attention to Michelle's purple dress color. America is not red or blue, but a combination of the two.

wait, no "He isn't anti-Israel, as far as I know" at the end??

"why'd he" is not "whitey", if you wish to decipher the troll droppings above....

Thank you for a small, but good first step, Senator Clinton!

Her supporters were at Obama's speech last night and cheered him on with the rest of us. We were a united party in St. Paul last night. Now we just have to wait for Hillary. I hope she comes around and supports her supporters as they have supported her.

I'd rather it be sooner than later, but a 4th of July speech from her could be dramatic and exciting. Until then, I hope she can be graceful and quite honestly, I hope she takes some time off the trail and rests up, collects herself. Then it's time to get to work in the Senate and for your constiuents in NY. There are some important votes coming up. I hope we start to see the Hillary I voted for on Feb. 5th and that I lost around March or so.

Until then, let's be honorable and respectful winners!

user-pic

second; july 4th would be fine. meanwhile, we got a general election to fight.

I really don't see the justification for staying in another month. The media, obviously, can't help itself and we really need to focus the attention on our nominee - not on Hillary's vanity parade.

She needs to get her most rabid supporters back from the Twilight Zone and behind the nominee. That will take time. She needs to begin that sooner rather than later. I think July 4 is too late.

Well, I think a chill out period may benefit all involved. Stay out of the limelight and then bow out gracefully. Sooner is better than later, however, I think a July 4th speech would have the maximum political effect, unifying at that time. However, much depends on what she does before then. I'm assuming (and I know what that can do) she will be graceful. I want a pre-February Hillary to come back, I think she might be able to return to that spot if she could rest up and collect herself.

Obama gave a brilliant speech to AIPAC this morning as well, and yet Hillary gets the nod on the front page and coverage here. Whatever...

that's the media, they love a good wild card. just look at how much they love to cover shark attacks, kidnapped children, etc. wild cards, something juicy. it's the TMZ-ization of our entire mass media. if you want something insightful and substantive tune into PBS or the BBC.

EXACTLY!!!

What is UP with THIS?!!! Why in the hell is she getting ANY leads on stories....that displace him?

Unbeliiiievable.

Two more minutes of hate for the unhinged.

That's all you get, folks. Ready? GO!

Anyone catch Lanny Davis on Larry King's show last night telling everyone he predicts victory for Shrillary in August. Asked if he meant Obama, he smiled and said "No, I spoke correctly the first time."

Going to be a long summer with this bullshit!

JOhn McCain just called Washington DC the "City of Satan." Lol. He forgets that he has been apart of the city for over 20yrs. what does that make him?

user-pic

Beelzebub?

Beelzebubba!

Her advisers said they considered the delegate numbers to be unreliable, even as the AP estimated Obama had several more than the 2,118 needed to nominate. They also believe that the DNC ruling in Michigan and Florida still weren't done correctly.

I am wondering, Is hillary going to take this to the convention because her advisers don't believe the delgates numbers are reliable and because of the michigan and florida ruling>?????

As a Clinton supporter...... I think she should drop out..... I don't like Barack Obama but i don't want the democrates to lose this general election.... it is time to unity the party..... I believe she needs to hurry and concede.

HILLARY TIME TO DROP OUT..... YOU DON'T STAND A CHANCE, ALL ODDS ARE AGIANST YOU.

HC08 - You have set such a great example of positivity and optimism in your posts. Thanks!

Thank you, HC '08. I don't want the dems to lose either. Outside of Joe Lieberman, there's no one the Dems could put up worth electing John McCain. I hope you can help convince your compatriots. I appreciate your continuing positive attitude.

I know it may be a hard transistion, but I hope you will support Obama as the Democratic nominee. If not him, then I hope you can support the issues that him and Senator Clinton, John Edwards and all the candidates have fought so hard for this year.

Welcome to the family. I was really happy to sit next to Hillary supporters last night and for us all to cheer on Senator Obama! I hope you can join us!

Are you feeling alright? Maybe you should lie down for a while. ;)

user-pic

I hear ya! Please pass it along to other HC supporters. We have to win in NOV. The longer this goes on, the more it seems we are reinforcing the republican meme of the Dems being spineless with no direction. That cannot help us. We not only need to win over Dems in Nov, but the disaffected republicans as well. This is not a good start if Hillary insists on staying in against all odds. :(

HC08,

You have always been a positive force for your chosen candidate. Thank you for continuing that. Please pass along your sentiments throguh Hillary's website. I went there this morning out of curiosity, and while they pop-up pushes you to lend support, the type of support you are affering her is truly the best for her, her party, and the nation.

HC08, we have razzed you, but I give you a huge dose of credit here. Good on you, babe!! You are a credit to this Party. You need to do what your conscience dictates in the way of your vote, but it's nice to hear some realism.

user-pic

Thanks HC for your ability to both stay positive for your candidate and your ability to face reality now. I'm sorry for your disappointment.

When you're ready, I hope you'll bring your positive energy over to Obama. Give him a chance. You might decide he's not so bad!

I'll take small, but something. It isn't easy to have your dreams go down in flames in front of the entire world.

enought clinton. please please please enough.

Did gotalife's post just get deleted?
Fine by me. Just checking.

Ha! It is gone.

user-pic

Looks like it. Glad to see TPM on the case.

Anyone watching John McCain's speech? He just invited BO to 10 town hall meetings across the country with an audience of 2-400 people.

In other words, after last nights debacle, he doesnt want to repeat it again. He wants to totally cut out BO "crowd energy" and speaking skills advantage and have the debates on his terms. IT WONT HAPPEN

He wants 1 town hall meeting a week up to the Dem convention.

LAME!!

I don't know about town hall meetings, but I can't wait for the moderated debates between these two.

After 10,000 Democratic debates, I think everyone needs a nice, long break before being subjected to any more. Obama should counter with a speech-off. Then they can jump motorcycles through a ring of fire. That would be sweet.

Josephcast,

I completely agree with you and want nothing more than for everyone to unite, but when you have Clinton's most notorious talking bobble heads go onto all of the cable networks AFTER Obama became the nominee explaining their facts that Hillary will be the official nominee in August and the winner in November, you kind of have to put the blame on THEM!

Her own people are the ones standing over the bonfire with full cans of gasoline, it's not us!

Her campaign has been one pathetic tirade of sore losership over the last four days! They're the ones that have to get over it and lend to the mending process, but they won't.

Instead, they claim today that the pledged delegates are theirs for the taking in August, that Obama is NOT the nominee and they predict she will prevail as becoming the nominee at the convention, AND hinted they will be on the phone all summer trying to get SD's to switch from him to her.

Don't blame us, blame THEM!

I do not blame anyone. I think everyone needs to chill out. We have our nominee. Clinton has suffered a huge loss. Be classy. We won! Take the high road, Obama has. We should do the same.

People do not like sore losers, they like sore winners even less.

I'll admit Clinton hasn't take the highroad at this point. But seriously, are we surprised? Her supporters have joined us by and large, at least the ones in Minnesota last night. Give Clinton and her remaining supporters time and quit flaming on. The more we flame against her, the more she wants to stay in. IMHO.

Last night we were all Democrats in that stadium, I'd like to see the forums here be the same way.

Oh, and don't blame Clinton, blame the effin' media that she stole Obama's thunder. That was their call. And I'm as mad as any Obama supporter about that.

You are spot on about the pundits!

DemCon Watch is trying to catch up on SuperDel reports. They have 7 more for Obama today, including Walter Mondale switching from Hillary to Obama in the name of Party Unity.

Fantastic. I am convinced that this switching over of HRC SDs in large numbers, is the strongest way to counter whatever leverage she has in post-primary negotiations between the two camps.

Just to be clearer - only Mondale switched, the other 6 are new additions.

But, still, coming out and declaring TODAY is an important message of solidarity for the Party.

I read yesterday that Sen Johnson of SD (who had come out for Obama very early) told a newspaper yesterday that he would vote at the convention for whomever won his state. Obviously enough (to my great surprise), Clinton carried SD yesterday. As such, that makes Johnson (perhaps) the only super to switch from Obama to Clinton (as opposed to the dozens now who have made the other switch). The thing is, I have seen no announcements (including on DemConWatch) of his switch. As such, I wonder if he really meant it or if the newspaper was just reporting garbage. Has anyone heard anything about Sen Johnson and whether or not he is still backing Obama?

user-pic
It isn't much, but it's something.

I guess "too little, too late" applies to everything she does.

I'm sorry, I'm not placated by minor concessions like this. It's Sandman time.

What the heck is going on at this sight?

Where is Obama's AIPAC speech?

It was outstanding!!

We get HRC's comments and not his stirring speech?!

wtf is UP with this?

user-pic

My friends, I think that mcbush is nuts. I am listening to him right now and he is delusional. What's with the green background anyway? You would think it would be red, white and blue with a big mushroom cloud or something. Any ideas? Thank you.

He's trying to be Ah-nold. Moderate, popular, independent, maverick Republican. Mostly it makes him look jaundiced.

Half dead were the younger crowd and the three quarter dead were the remaining audience(No offense), but he needs help.

He looks creepy, while that shouldn't influence a voter decision, he is looking more and more like a Zombie.

Also, they want to be able to CGI in the screaming masses of supporters later.

user-pic

Ah, that explains it. I was wondering.

Her audacity to hold an entire democratic party hostage is tragic...I don't care if Obama has to work a little harder to win, no Hill on the ticket.

To be honest, when the news of her openness to consider VP slot broke, I said, may be...if it helps...if that's what it takes to end it all tonite...but she managed to undermine her own moment in the light and undercut Obama's moment in history- by a disgraceful speech.

By the way, please issue me a restraining order from Lanny Davis- he isn't worth even an hour in prison.

The Clintons have devolved into tragicomic buffoons. Last night, you're right, was disgraceful. AIPAC this morning wasn't a whole lot better.

The message from the leadership this morning fell completely short of what it should have been. It should have been not only a call for unity, but endorsement by Dean, Pelosi and Reid. We need leadership by example, not mere advice.

I support Barack Obama because I want a president who governs. I think he gets what that means --- the end of the permanent campaign, the beginning of action for the sake of what's right.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure the party leaders do get it.

I am getting a terrible feeling about the lack of committment from leadership. They are like a groom headed to the altar with cold feet.

What in the world is wrong??. Their behavior does not match what has happened. I suspects that racism lurks deep in their hearts.

Their is a paralysis grabbing hold of the Dem party that is not good based on his having won. There is open mouth incredulity.

Even the media is labelling him a black nominee and not acknowledging that he is an AMERICAN president.

Then look at this site. No one even recognizes Obama's AIPAC speech?!

WHY? Why? Is Obama being ignored..friggin Bush and Condoleeza endorsed Barack this morning and we have heard nothing from DEAN, or Pelosi.

This is why people of color have a lot of angst and bitterness about America.

Achievements by people of color NEVER get their DUE recognition from the Media or leadership.

TPMcafe is following right along with this damning with faith praise discrimination that is historical in this country.

The man whipped his opponent from coast to coast and today he takes a back seat to a rival he beat after ELEVEN consecutive wins in FEBRUARY!!

It is June..he has the number of delegates but not his due recognition based on beating a formidable opponent along with a former President and what was indisputable considered the most powerful political machine in the country.

He has EARNED this and they are raining on his parade.

The whole darn party, right along with the media and this site.

Incredible.

user-pic

As an Obama supporter who is married to a Clinton supporter, I really welcome her statement.

No, I don't want her to be VP. I can accept that change in politics is better done gradually, and I wouldn't want to toss out the baby with the bathwater, but Bill is a real narcissistic pain in the ass.

One step forward, three leaps back. It's tough not to be in a perpetual state of rage towards Clinton. I'm still pissed about her speech last night. Deep breaths, deep breaths. Ok. I welcome her support, whenever she decides to give it. But it would be nice if she endorses before November.

user-pic

Ok, it's been over 12 hours since obama clinched and the clintons lost and acted like sore losers. Assuming starting at 100, I would say that she is currently at 50 with whatever leverage that the clintons allegedly had. Every hour that goes by, the more marginal the clintons become. Give it a few days and we will be saying clinton who?

We have Bush who congratulates Barack but not Clinton. Everyone should absorb that reality and truly consider her to be lowest of the low.
I think she should be considered for the post of a Senate Page when she returns to the senate!

My point of view is that this is a barely perceptible olive branch.

Granted, it wasn't the right setting to concede. But really, we shouldn't have to read tea leaves at this point.

She had a chance to address the nation last night and follow through on her promise, which was:

I will campaign my heart out for the democratic nominee. But not until one of us reaches that magic number.

She needs to step up and explicitly concede this race and say in no uncertain terms that Obama won it fair and square and that she believes he'd make a great president and that she'll get behind him 100% and she needs to say she wants her supporters to offer him the same courtesy and respect that he's offered her.

This is called grace and dignity and if she's as tough as she says she is, she should be able to concede like an adult.

. . . let me be very clear: I know that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel.

I don't think the key word is "will," I think it's "Senator." What she should have said is "I know that President Obama will be a good friend to Israel.

But as you say, "It isn't much, but it's something."

user-pic
. . . let me be very clear: I know that Senator Obama will be a good friend to Israel.

Then she went on to say how she is a Better friend to Israel.

I was just discussing Clinton's (non) concession with a co-worker who is more optimistic than I about her getting out of the race. His take is that her supporters really need to be brought down gently in order to come around to supporting the party.

I don't buy it. I have supported losing candidates before, and the first thing they say is, Thank you. We fought the good fight. Now we need to rally behind ............ Think Dr. Dean after the Wisconsin primary in 2004.

The most deeply cynical part of me believes she is stringing her supporters along, hoping for the last few clicks of the Donate button at her web site, in order to recoup as much of the money she loaned herself as she can.

When the campaign debt issue first arose, many were against Obama helping her retire her debt and offended that their Obama donations might be used this way. At this point, however, if it will end her campaign and allow Obama to choose whomever he wants as VP, I say pay as much as we have to to retire the debt and move on.

Obama cannot legally take donor money out of his own campaign chest to give to Hillary. He has said publicly the the help will come in the form of fund raisers. So donors to the Obama campaign should not worry about that.

I wonder to what extent if any the Peter Paul fraud suit against her and Bill is part of the stringing it out strategy. My understanding is that CA judge ruled that Hillary cannot be called to testify as long as she is actively involved in campaigning.

1) No VP for Hillary; she's married to Bilbo Baggage.
2) No gold star for Hillary; she does not play well with others, having failed in grade school to learn basic skills: play by the rules, shake hands with the loser if you win, shake hands and immediately congratulate the winner if you lose.

user-pic

Now, this is the way to handle the clintons. According to obama, they will be talking over the next few weeks. Go obama, marginalize them as much as possible.

http://www.politico.com/blogs/thecrypt/0608/Obama_on_Clinton_Well_be_talking.html

In a couple of weeks, they will be totally marginalized. Good move Obama.

user-pic

I predict HRC will formally concede when Obama reaches her preferred magic number of 2209 delegates.

I am a little bemused by the fact that this thread is devoted to Hillary's talk to AIPAC, when in fact Obama's talkpreceded, Hillary's at the same meeting. But it is Hillary who gets the billing, and no Obama thread. There is however a link to the story on the front page.

So at this point as far as TPM is concerned, whose views on Israel are more important? That of the presumptive nominee or the also-ran?

user-pic

Agreed. Kind of strange. Maybe someday we will find out why tpm has done these types of things throughout this campaign. There has to be an explaination.

By the way her speech made no sense in light of the situation and his was awesome. She is getting sillier and sillier.

Is that what it's come to, where we have to parse every sentence to find a hint that could be favorably interpreted as Hillary doing the right thing?

Throughout the primary, Hillary has made affirming remarks about Obama - but TPM didn't notice them until Obama won.
Interesting selectivity.

>>>>Go obama, marginalize them as much as possible.

Yes! let's hate Hillary MORE. The MORE we hate her the more Obama will win the general.
LOL

Hey - you guys ain't called bots for nothing!
Actually Obama NEEDS Hillary's 18M voters - but keep hating on Hillary so Obama will win the general.

No wonder Obamabots are called the new Bushies.

Thatta way, Hillary!

I think you're downplaying the significance of Hillary's remark. If Obama said the same thing you would be calling it a remarkably conciliatory remark that shows grace and dignity in defeat.

user-pic

Not if he'd behaved like she did the previous evening. Context.

What? there's primary going on?
