Group Pushing Obama-Hillary Ticket Will Announce Over 25,000 Signatures Of Support

Adam Parkhomenko, the head of the Obama-Hillary-ticket-supporting group VoteBoth, tells me that on Monday, he'll announce via press release that his group has collected over 25,000 signatures in support of the idea.

He'll also announce that VoteBoth's petition has been signed by supporters in every one of all 50 states, and that it's picked up 15,000 new signatures in the last three days.

"Every day, we're getting thousands of these signatures," he says. "Maybe when we get to 100,000 we'll present it. We're building it every day."

Parkhomenko also claims the VoteBoth Web site is getting between 30,000 and 40,000 unique visits a day now. The group yesterday announced that former Hillary adviser Lanny Davis had joined the effort.

The question for the group now is whether it can attract high-profile neutral parties, or, even more ideally, high-profile Obama supporters, to speak officially for the group and its goals. It also remains to be seen whether the group can raise real money, perhaps to finance an ad campaign of some kind.

Late Update: I just checked with an online activism guru I trust, Tim Tagaris, who was Ned Lamont's Internet director and did the same for Chris Dodd's Presidential camapign, and he had this to say about the numbers:

For all the attention, free media, and direct links VoteBoth has received in the past few days, 25,000 signatures on a petition is really not that impressive.

You're talking about campaigns that have millions of people on their email lists. I've been a part of plenty of online campaigns, a lot lower profile than this election, like FISA for example, that have received many times the signatures in less time.

Late Late Update: Parkhomenko responds to Tagaris by saying that they'd only emailed a few thousand to solicit signatures. "Twenty thousand have never gotten an email," he says, adding that this "shows how much potential there is."

"I don't think anyone would say that the first 25,000 that lined up behind Senator Obama didn't translate into a movement," he adds. "We are excited to see our support continue to grow at the rate it is."

Those are very good numbers, it can't be denied. The group yesterday announced that former Hillary adviser Lanny Davis had joined the effort.

Whoo, thank God, with Lanny's help this endeavour is doomed to failure. The only way it could be any more doomed is if Mark Penn signed on to help.

Wow. 25,000 signatures...

That's about 1/20th of the amount of petition signatures that were gathered in the "Draft Gore" movement.

Obama/Gore 2008!

Considering there were 130343 Total Signatures to save the TV show Jericho on CBS, They have a bit of work to do.

user-pic

apparently they didn't get the memo:

"While Senator Clinton has made clear throughout this process that she will do whatever she can to elect a Democrat to the White House, she is not seeking the vice presidency, and no one speaks for her but her. The choice here is Senator Obama's and his alone."

Wasn't the dude that said/wrote this speaking for her?!?!

Ugh. GO AWAY!!

These people are about as politically astute as a troglodyte.

I think the problem is more that so many people (on both sides of the aisle) have increasingly isolated themselves from "the other" over the past 16 years - we avoid certain TV and radio MSM networks, certain newspapers, certain online sources, certain people.

It's partly a response to the poisonous air of American politics over that period, but I think it's also because it's simply easier to call someone "evil" than to force ourselves (and the "other side") to get past the crap and focus on what we can agree on.

user-pic

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid.

She wasn't ever going to get the nod, because of CIC comments and the library donor issue, but this just makes her supporters look like they won't recognize reality.

And really. Having Lanny Davis join the group is just freaking hilarious.

Idiots...

I'm sure if someone started a "No Nightmare Ticket" website they could get more than that

You just gave votenic an idea... I'd visit that piece of spam though.

user-pic

Thank you! I was just thinking that I'd be thrilled to sign a petition against this ridiculous idea!

user-pic

And Greg?

Can you please name a "high profile neutral" person?

The only person I can think of is Al Gore. Who else is there?

Make it stop! SOMEBODY MAKE IT STOP!!

Here, have one of my Valium. It will help it go away quietly. =:)

I just visited the site. I'm a unique IP. But I don't support the site's intentions. Visits to a site only means visits to a site, not support. How many times have I clicked a link to free republic to read a thread, and yet, I don't support free republic's beliefs.

Pressuring Obama to seem weak and cave in to demands will avail Clinton nothing. Whether the pressure comes from her or petition.

25,000 signatures out the entire US doesn't sound like alot to me.

I'm underwhelmed.

user-pic

Obama already made it clear that pressure will not affect his decision-making process. Thank god for that!

I click on right-wing advertisements all the time. Especially the sponsored links on Google search and Gmail. The advertisers have to pay per hit. I used to be a Google AdWords advertiser for my webstore and those clicks add up to real money paid out to Google pretty quick!

Excellent idea! There's a bunch of those anti-Obama Google ads right on this site. I just clicked on a few.

Yes! Do it here too. TPM gets the ad revenues and sites like Ann Coulter's pay for each click-through.

25,000 signatures sounds impressive until you realize that Obama and Hillary received around 18 million votes apiece.

or that over 1 million people have viewed that woman at the DNC rules meeting ranting about inadequate black man. Lanny is making the rounds and letting Sean Hannity talk circles around him. He should stay off TV. I wrote him and told him so. By the way, have you ever noticed that Hannity looks like Fred Flintstone?

.... but sounds like Charlie Brown's teacher..

I hereby petition Hillary to

HIT THE BRICKS!!!

We could do this.

Sargent is desperately looking for any excuse to avoid having his Hillary08 Tattoo removed.

Dont they know they are doing more harm than good to their cause? Their antics will only force him to NOT pick her so he doesnt look weak.

user-pic

Don't do it, Obama.

Don't crawl into bed with a spitting Cobra.

If you do, you get blood poisoning, either by being bitten or spat on!

Hillary who?

Shoo, Hillary!

Scat!!

SHOOO!!!

Petitions are nice, and those are impressive numbers. Some other petitions i'd like to see:

Stop the war

Impeach Bush

Disband the Republican Party

I bet we can get 200k on each of those. Therefore, they MUST be enacted.

Oooh, good!

Shoo, Hillary!! SHOOO, SHOOO, SHOOO!!!

Breaking:

During last night's top secret meeting, I have now learned, that Senator Clinton formally asked Senator Obama to be the Presidential Candidate on her ticket.

I heard she offered him the VP slot if he'll agree to drop out.

user-pic

This is good news actually 25,000 is nothing. I guess that's what we'll lose if she's not on the ticket. Big deal. Go away clintons! I'll be glad when they stop hogging the press.

SHOOO!!!

Hey Greg, three of the last five articles here on TPM Election Central have been about Hillary Clinton.

Just saying.

And this is different from any other day ... how?

Well, now that she's effectively out of the race, you'd think they'd tone it down a bit...

Can't Gravel can any love?

You would THINK so ... but that shows little faith in Greg's ability to make the entire universe about Hillary Clinton.

Maybe I'm just stupid, but 25,000 doesn't sound like that much to me. I mean, over 130,000 people have signed this petition to keep "Jericho" on CBS.

I don't know if anyone's sold their bike yet, though.

Bwahahahahahahaha!

Well then, it's a clear mandate! Obama MUST put Skeet "Bryan Ray Trout" Ulrich on the ticket. The people have spoken.

LOLOLOLOL!

Greg:

Would you please add an update to your post in which you indicate that Rush Limbaugh is urging his 22 million listeners to sign this petition? I don't think that can go unmentioned, it is a very important and noteworthy piece of information. Signatures on the internet are unverifiable and who knows just exactly who would be enthusiastic about signing such a petition.

user-pic

Too funny, half the signatures at least are probably from lush listeners. Toooooo funny. 25,000 is nothing, what a sorry joke.

And if you need another perspective on this, Greg, check out this link - Al goes into more depth than I do, but I agree with his sentiments.

Greg don't need no stinkin perspective.

A Gallup Poll today says that Obama is even with McCain. But if Hillary is on the ticket Obama/Clinton are 5 points ahead of McCain.

Name recognition poll. It's meaningless. Plus, and this is the kicker, Clinton wouldn't submit to or pass the vetting process. I'm not even going to address the other disqualifying factors (e.g., primary comments, DRAMA, etc.).

It's his decision. Not your's. Not Gallup's. Not Lanny Davis.

I wonder how +5 points stacks up with the other VP possibilities? I remember seeing a poll where Obama/Edwards was just crushing everything.

And yet, Obama will pick his VP and not these people.

That's what "winning" means. The winner picks.

Lanny Davis - go away you piece of shit!

SHOOO, OTTO! SHOOO, SHOOO, SHOOO!

ps The irony is the more vocal they are about this, the less likely it is to happen.

These clowns are their own worst enemies. Their ugly bullying posture assures no VP spot.

Yep. A bunch of checkers players if I've ever seen them.

Here's who it's *attracting* - Rush Limbaugh's "operation chaos" ditto heads:

http://ruralvotes.com/thefield/?p=1326

Rush on Wednesday: "...So as the commander-in-chief of US Operation Chaos, I would like to urge all of you who want to, to go to HillaryClinton.com and tell her what you think she ought to do...."

Noted. I've asked Greg to add that to his post, let's see if he updates...

user-pic

Gaaack! WTF? These people have no political instinct whatsoever.

They think they're doing the right thing, but this is just amazingly disrespectful of Obama. Trying to strong arm the presidential nominee? Just plain stupid.

Senator Obama strikes me as an especially astute politician with good instincts, and as someone who is self-possessed enough to make up his own mind.

I wouldn't worry too much about any acquiescence to any also-ran demands.

Sick of posting on Clinton threads. Make it stop!

Like many here I'd like to see more threads on the historic nature of our nominee. Why not more coverage on the Virginia tour yesterday, I for one would be very interested. Especially considering there is a very good chance one of the Virginia boys WILL be the VP.

Back to the Edwards thread on VP for me....

Oh, and for what it's worth....

OBAMA-FEINGOLD 2008!!!!

If the Washington pundits can throw out a horrible school prayer endorsing, old school, anti-gay Dixiecrat like Nunn, I'm gonna counter-balance with a populist like Feingold.

I guess there are people out there who really would sooner support a ticket with Hillary (SHOO!) on it.

But the net effect would be negative, big time.

Can't stand up for himself, two minorities at once, weird and spiteful Hillary learing next to him, gets bullied by gender-feminists, more of the appalling Clintons, astronomical negatives for her, helps Rebublicans raise more cash. And if it rained on election day, even some of his base would stay home rather than get wet. Poll all you want -- this is a losing proposition.

Oops, forgot to mention pre-election interviews on smarmy TV shows with Bill about his return to the White House. YUCK!!

Perhaps if these dead-enders would have less impact of people in the media stopped focusing their attention and linking to their site.

Just a thought, Greg.

Oh, and I'm still waiting for that story on Barack Obama's monumental win and the world's collective sigh of relief, not to mention pride they seem to have in American, once again, Greg.

Reason seems pointless in this regard ... personally, I've just moved on to snide insults. Same effect - way more gratifying.

Hopefully I did the math correctly, but isn't 25,000 about 0.1% of the people who supported her? Put another way, I think it would be 0.05% of all the Democrats who voted in the Primary. Or 0.007% of the US population. Color me unimpressed.

user-pic

Uh, support is a strong word, voted for based on name recognition is probably more appropriate.

user-pic

Gregg, I actually read the post, I usually gloss over your clinton rah, rah, rah bs. This really is absurd. Are you guys at TPM getting paid by the clintons or what's the deal? The clintons lost on tuesday. It's over. Why do you guys keep shilling for the clintons? Is somebody at tpm married to a relative or what? I am sure that we are all really curious. It's been this way for over a year. What's the gig?

mmmmm ... pizza!

It is a very easy registration form to fill out.

It just asks for First and last name, Email, and zip code. That is open to being spammed by anyone from the Clinton Camp.

Someone just registered: First Name: Obama. Last Name: Sebelius.

user-pic
Someone just registered: First Name: Obama. Last Name: Sebelius

Hmmmm. That sounds like a very good idea, doesn't it?

The names, and then, the ticket?

Oddly, there is also an "Obama Kaine" registered. What are the odds of two people having the same unusual first name? Shows the breadth of her support.

While it is normally not done at this stage, I think that Obama should consider naming Hillary as Secretary of State, a higher profile position then VP. If she indicates to her supporters that if he is elected, she would accept that position, all of this crap would end. And, I believe she would be very good as a Secretary of State.

Hmm . . . might make Biden and Richardson sad.

"Someone just registered: First Name: Obama. Last Name: Sebelius."

Thanks for sharing the joyful news, liam! FUNNY!

Love your avatar. Now there is a real dream ticket!

Thx!

"Secretary of State, a higher profile position then VP" goes to Joe Biden. "If she indicates to her supporters that if he is elected, she would accept that position," then SHOOO!

"And, I believe she would be very good as a Secretary of State."

And this reminds me of when Jules said, "Sewer rat might taste like pumpkin pie, but I'd never know cause I'll never taste the filthy motherfucker!"

Greg, thanks for the update. Could you add another update stating the Rush Limbaugh is asking 22 MILLION listeners to sabotage this petition? I mean, maybe it's just me, but that's a lot of people that could easily sign up 25,000 names simply to monkey with the Democrats.

Sick of the Clinton threads? Stop posting on them. I'm outta here..........

25,000???

Ummmmmm, OK...I saw more people sign a petition in my hometown asking for a high school baseball team to receive funding for new uniforms.

If they're bragging about this, then all I can do is laugh!

Uniforms with Hillary's picture on them?

Fuggetaboutit.

Well, that's just a little more than one tenth of one percent of the people who voted for her. It doesn't look like much of a groundswell to me, just the last gasp of the dead-enders.

But then again, that 25,000 can grow to 20 million once Ass Clown Limbaugh unleashes his mindless minions to crash the site by sign-ups.

Of course, Lanny Davis, one of the site's creators, will claim these are all 100% legit.

user-pic

Hmmmm, someone else just registered.

first name: Obama
last name: Webb

I think Obama's campaign and the Dem leadership has enough sense to question this petition once it shoots from 25,000 to 20 million.

Trust me, Hillary will be nowhere near the VP spot. Definitely a Cabinet post (which she deserves), but not the VP spot!

I didn't support her at all in the primaries, but I think she's make a hell of a Secretary of State OR replace Harry Reid!

if the site receives 30-40,000 unique hits per day, but has only garnered 25,000 signatures; would that not seem to mean that there are a great many more people who do NOT want, or are ambivalent towards, an Obama-Clinton ticket?

user-pic

25,000 signatures out of 35 million voters in the Democratic primary? Wow, sounds like a success!

Another indication that Hillary's attempt to get her supporters so emotionally attached to her as a personality has backfired and now these people are in a fenzy and out of her control.

There are two groups that she has lost control of, one (1) are people who still want anything to do with the DNC, these people will petition and kick and scream to get her installed as VP if she can't be President. Some of these people will join group 2 when/if that doesn't pan out.

Group two (2) are extremist supporters who are vowing to vote McCain. She and many of her supporters said so many things to undermine Obama that this group is convinced that the election was stolen from her and so they will do whatever they can to harm anyone that is perceived to have gotten in her way. They turned against even Taylor Marsh for suggesting that a vote for McCain if you support Clinton is a bad idea. They will not follow Hillary's lead in supporting Obama and the DNC, they are convinced she is being strong-armed into it and forced to do such things. They feel they are the only true Democrats and it's up to them to purge the current party leaders by voting against them.

These are not conclusions, they are paraphrases.

Obama said to "chill out" that he would pick his own VP, but this doesn't look like Obama is picking his VP but that members of a divided congress are doing it for him.

Hillary is NOT the ticket - but it looks like Obama could not resist being steam-roller here!

It is too bad Edwards wants to avoid the mix, but Obama should wait a spell and really look over the many people who could help him win this thing.

And this type of crap off of CNN:

June 6th, 2008 10:21 am ET

i left the democratic party and registered indepdent will support mccain.

i'm disgusted at the way hillary has been treated by the media, obama, and the dnc.

my protest vote will go to mccain in november

I really believe this crap is nothing more than Republican turf letters, because it's too creepy, and to much a part of Republican disinformation campaigns that are rampant in the corporate owned TV Media. It's just classic Murdock and FOX.

The petition to bring back "My So-Called Life" probably got ten times more signatures than this.

It's all about Saturday. What she says tomorrow will determine whether or not she has a snowball's chance in Hell of joining the ticket, signatures be damned.

FABULOUS idea -- we need a link!

user-pic

If Hillary wants to be VP, just set up some kind of entity. Doesn't matter what. Just make sure the entity has a VP slot. And please give it to hillary!

He's BAAAAAaaaaack!

(Hint: "kool-aid tastes great with crow mixed in!")

Opps, my bad. Sorry, linked to the wrong post.

user-pic

Oooh, 25,000, I'm impressed.

Not.

There were more than 30,000 people lined up in St. Paul Tuesday night to hear Obama claim the nomination.

user-pic

With the estimates that they provided in terms of traffic and signatures in the last few days about 86% of those who visit this site DO NOT sign the petition. So they are getting an OK amount of traffic but aren't doing a very good job of converting those visitors into signatures.

Pretty pathetic actually.

user-pic

I wonder if they are doing any better with the t-shirts and stickers that they are trying to sell on the site?

- Web Domain Name = $50
- Buying the support of Lanny Davis = $500
- Making Hillary Clinton look like a narcissistic monster by trying to pressure the Dem Nominee for POTUS in an effort to sell a few t-shirts & stickers online = Priceless

COUNT THIS AS MY SIGNATURE, to the petition that he select ANYONE but Hillary... Well, maybe not Darth Cheney.

Would you rather have Joe Lieberman than Hillary?

I didn't support her at all in the primaries, but I think she's make a hell of a Secretary of State OR replace Harry Reid!
Hillary Clinton for Attorney General!

That would be sweet. LOL.

If a petition were to be circulated against Clinton as VP, it would undoubtedly get 10 times that many signatures - at the bare minimum. The Clintons will never pass the vetting process anyway, so why don't all the pundits and the Clintonites just take a vacation.

user-pic

For comparison, there were 18,983 signatures on a petition to save Sven Goran-Ericksson as the manager of the Manchester City soccer team in England. 0.00138% of Hillary Clinton's voters have signed up in a country of 300 million people.

Note: Sven got canned.

Almost as many signatures as the petitions to save the TV shows Moonlight & Jericho.

They both still got cancelled.

user-pic

I'm sure I could get 25,000 signatures for "An Ice Cream Cone in Every Hand" initiative too.

Apparently these people didn't get the memo from Clinton that this is Obama's decision and everyone should leave him to it -- at his own pace, on his own, with his own counsel. And stop bugging him.

Do I have start a petition to keep Clinton off the ticket?

Seriously, shouldn't we let Obama decide without public pressure? With such pressure, he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Which means we're damned if he does and damned if he doesn't

Send him an e-mail if you want to lobby for putting Clinton on the ticket.

Incidentally, why is TPM even reporting this nonsense? Oh that's right. This is the "all Hillary, all the time" blog. Even after she loses the nomination, she dominates the the topic of conversation over here. Frustrating.

The group may be well-intentioned but one of their biggest problems as I see it is that they have recruited Lanny Davis, which immediately translates to a lot of people believing that this is a Clinton effort. Davis is of course extremely close to the Clintons. Even if not true, the perception is there.

Nobody can stop them from what they are doing, but their calling attention to this effort can be counterproductive to the very thing they want to accomplish, since it will be perceived as putting pressure on Obama.

So why isn't super-smart Davis advising them to chill? I can't figure it out.

At this point I don't care who is the VP on the ticket but I wouldn't vote for McSame even if he was my own great grandfather.

user-pic

Yawn. 25,000 is a drop in the bucket. This is not happening.

user-pic

Only 17,975,000 to go.

user-pic

What happened Adam Parkhomenko? last time we saw you you were telling us about how Hillary was going to the convention in Denver! Now you are kissing ass to let Hillary suck up to Obama in hope of getting the VP. LMAO!

user-pic

I can say for a fact that at least 20 of those signatures are very OBVIOUSLY phony. They'll never pass the fraud test. Not unless someone has registered hotsmell.com since I last checked. :)

I was looking for a petition opposing an Obama-Clinton ticket, which I think would be a real disaster. No dice.

Why did I know that clinking on the link would get me to Greg???

I do not understand why (except for a basic lack of seriousness shown here for Obama, his candidacy and his success)this bs keeps coming back up on TPM?? No one seems as obsessed by this question more than TPM (Greg) and CNN.

Senator Obama (you know, the new head of the Democratic Party?? The presumptive nominee? The Senator?? The one who just took on a major political family and won??? The one deserving of a being treated seriously, Greg) has said several times no. They have said it politely by talking about time, process (i.e.,vetting Bill), and his RIGHT, obligation and responsiblity to choose his own VP.

Question, Greg: If Biden or Dodd or Edwards or Gore or Sebelius (for that matter)had won the primary, would you dare to legitimize the Clintons' efforts to "strong-arm" Obama??

They have so little respect for Obama, and the more Greg operates as the conduit from the Clintons' to the general public, the more that lack of regard characterizes TPMElection.

Let me put it another way, Greg and Clinton(s) and Bob Johnson: Senator Obama is a grown-ass man. Leave him alone.

I just utilised the letter writing tool on Voteboth to urge a few SD's not to support Hillary as VP, how convienent.

Thanks Lanny:)

user-pic

Gee, thanks for that late, late, late update. I was getting worried. By the way, it seems kind of disingenuous. I would think they would do a spam e-mail to supporters and they have hundreds and hundreds of thousands right? And they only got 25k. Too funny. They still lie in defeat. Those clintons are such cards.

Considering that Clinton spoke on Tuesday like she had 18 million votes in her pocket, these 25,000 signatures look mighty insignificant.

That reminds me. How's the petition to reunite the Beatles going?

And another thing:

This is an interesting tidbit from The Field. He has an very interesting analysis of "Operation Chaos," particularly its effect in Indiana and some other state (Al G.'s take is that Indiana and Texas?? would have gone to Obama w/out Clinton-Rush voters.

In any case The Field (like Noonan's essay today) says aloud that much of this "angry-will-never-turn-back" crew is being manufactured out of the Clinton campaign. Eugene Robinson wrote/said that that "18 million??" lost currency after about 5 hours when people realized that Clinton had not endorsed Obama.

So I wonder how many of these 25,000 signatures are actually McCain/Rush/Republican "mischief" makers??

Just saying...

Whatever the case, I am so happy that I am hearing more and more people not take for granted that this "angry white woman voter" actually exists in the numbers put forth by Davis and company.

@thejoshuablog, Greg and Bob Johnson and Diane Feinstein (sp):

I agree that media covering deadenders give(s) them their juioe and exaggerate(s) their importance and numbers.

Also Greg: Have you taken the advice of several posters and looked at The Field's analysis of Rush's folk continuing (with your help, by the way)to try to make a joke of the Democratic nomination process? You might want to provide a link to The Field.

Also: Does TPM having a live link to VoteBoth actually enhance VoteBoth's mission by harnessing/annexing the TPM readership so that "hits" get to be reported by them as "interest"?

And Finally: Has TPM Election Center cultivated access to Obama's campaign? The DNC?? The RNCC?? Anybody else other than what are now Clinton deadenders???

Just asking...

Hilarious. And to think these are the same people who go around claiming that it's the Obama people who are involved in a cult....
