Gore Endorsement Of Obama Grabs Big Headlines In Michigan
The Gore event yesterday gives Obama exactly the headlines he wanted today in the Detroit papers...

Obama has edged into a lead in polls of the crucial state, now that he's started to campaign there in earnest.

Lets hope so! I am really scared if we have 4 more years of the same.

What I heard of Gore's speech, it was excellent.
What an opportunity we missed by not having a President Gore.

I concur wholeheartedly. But If Gore had been that amazing, that animated and that passionate 8 years ago we never would have Bush.
Being out of the political limelight has enabled the real Gore to come out. I guess we'll always have to wonder what could have been.

I think Gore's defeat in 2000 had as much to do with the media being against him (see the Daily Howlers archives) as the Supreme Court Decision that ended the recounts.
though I do agree, this is a new Gore. It is one who lived through 2000, and the subsequent Bush presidency. I think it has changed him, for the better.

Could this be The Ticket?
My guess is Gore has no interest, but it's still an intriguing thought.

Beautiful!! Thank you for posting this. It was so clear last night how Gore and Obama share the same vision for America and have done the same connecting of the dots:
Environment/energy policy/foreign policy/national security/ economy are all seemlessly connected.

They certainly are.
I got flamed for saying that the other day- the war and the bad economy are linked -but it's true. We're wasting trillions of dollars.

Huh, there are people here who actually deny this?
Obviously, pouring hundreds of billions of dollars worth of Chinese credit into a smoldering black hole is going to have an economic impact back home.

Yep, and with a great deal of condescension, I might add.
Can't remember who it was -

You mean, that war and threats of war in the Middle East, could do something like drive up the price of oil and encourage rampant speculation on how far the price of oil rises ("look! more saber rattlin' with Iran! BUY! BUY! BUY!)?

Seriously? Part of the reason for the credit crunch is the increase in gov't borrowing and debt. The weak dollar is due, in part, to deficit spending. The war, which is off budget, is increasing deficit spending, in addition to the on-budget Bush tax cuts. The weak dollar and the war are inflating oil prices, and it's all a vicious downward spiral for U.S. economy. The war isn't the only factor, but it's a big one.
That's my layman's understanding. What am I missing?

I actually am happier to see Granholm on that stage than Gore. You knew Gore was going to do the right thing. Granholm did her best to drag out the "HIllary Won Michigan" crap.
Here's hoping she can deliver.

Michigan is in the Democratic column this Fall. Mark it down.

I already have.

I had the misfortune of tuning in during Granholm's rant.
"LITHIUM ION BATTERIES! BARACK OUR WORLD! I'M COOL! DON'T BOO ME!"
Gore's speech was alright, but it mostly reminded me that he excels as a teacher and conversationalist but not as a traditional orator.

She really has an odd speaking style. Gets really forceful with her voice, speaks so that you can see how things are italicized.

I hope that the Obama campaign uses Gore as much as possible. As one of the talking heads last night said (paraphrasing here): everytime Gore speaks it's a reminder of what could have been. I felt that way through his entire speech last night. It's such a shame.

A lot of people feel that way, to gage by the numbers of people who have said it to me. I was buying his book in Gunnison, Colorado, a couple of years ago and a lady standing in line with me asked me if I'd seen the movie. I said to her: Gore was robbed. She replied: No, we were. I've heard that a lot.

I was at Joe Lewis Arena for my first political rally/love fest/party ever. What a show. 20k or so filled the Joe even in the nose bleed sections. The doors were supposed to open at 6pm and there were hundreds of folks there at 3pm! We stood and waited 1.5 hours elbow to elbow with all age groups...children to grandparents. Everyone was cordial and happy to be there.
Jen Granholm tryed to get people fired up by reading from her text...too much pandering for my tastes. She has been better, didn't accomplish what she had hoped to do. She received some groans and catcalls along with polite applause when mentioning her support for Hillary.
Chauncy Billups of the Pistons came out and the place went crazy. He is well spoken and looked at ease with the crowd. Huge cheers when he gave his support to Obama.
Then Obama and Gore came out and the crowd hit a new high. I think it was louder than when the Wings won the Stanley Cup in 97-98. The cheering went on and on... so loud, so frenzied. Gore spoke from text and was a much improved speaker from when he was in office.
Obama spoke without text, at length and in detail on a few subjects. I suspect this was a stump speach with Detroit/Michigan details added in. He spoke forcefully in support of Hillary and the crowd responded. One of the things I came away with was his insistance on building the grassroots effort for his election by volunteering locally. From the crowds applauding on various hot button phrases, they seemed in tune with ones that were not the usual topics like Constitutional abuses and recognition of teachers low pay.
I came away with a new appeciation for Obama's speaking skills (1 hour) and his message.

I watched the rally on MSNBC last night and they were showing the feed without the sound before Obama and Gore came out...what the hell was the deal when Granholm took off her shoe?
June 17, 2008 10:49 AM | Reply | Permalink
Yeah, I was watching MSNBC too (Cablevision took away my C-SPAN, damnit...) I was hoping they'd stop yapping for a minute (mostly KO bitching about them running long) and let us hear Granholm.
At least she didn't bang the shoe on the podium, but seriously, who told her a copying Kruschev's moves was a good idea?

Obama has my state of Michigan.
I never doubted it through all the brouhaha of the primary mess.
Gore helped by praising the Red Wings and the win of the Stanley Cup at the beginning of his speech. But it would've been better to bring a toothless Scandinavian accented guy in red and white to introduce him.

Does anyone know when McCain plans to conduct his next event in Michigan?
Specifically, have they announced from which High School they're going to rent a gym following a Boy Scout meeting or science fair?

Here's a great interactive panoramic photo of the Detroit rally. 20,000+ crowd. Whoa.
