Florida Dem Declines To Endorse Obama

Although the national GOP efforts to negatively associate down-ticket Democrats with Barack Obama failed in the recent special elections, it appears to have paid off in one respect: We now have a red-district Democrat backing away from from Obama's candidacy.

Freshman Rep. Tim Mahoney of Florida told the Palm Beach Post that he's remaining officially uncommitted for now, and wants the opportunity to lobby John McCain on key local issues.

"I'm a Democrat," Mahoney said. "But am I going to have a pep rally or something like that? No, I'm not going to do that."

If Obama is going to win Florida, he'll need to have local Dems being a lot more energized and active on his behalf than this guy. But his reluctance seems odd, given that Dems in much deeper-red Mississippi and Louisiana won special elections even after being "tarred" by their association with Obama.

what the hell is going on withj florida dems? debbie "the dingbat" wasserman shulz won't campaign for fellow dems and now this mahoney guy won't endorse his own party's nominee?

somethings rotten in the state of florida.

someone needs to kick that delegations ass.

The only thing rotten in the state of fl is the way they were treated by the DNC. Face it. Obama was the selected, not the elected. We are not borg... we will not assimilate. We will not support a candidate who is unfit for the presidency.

Is this the guy who won the seat that had been held by the Republican Congressional Page Molester?

user-pic

The very same.

Is this guy still living in the past?

Someone send him a telegram.

user-pic

He wants the opportunity to lobby McCain on key local issues? And he's a freshman?

Oh, but it makes sense now. He was a Republican, but changed parties, and ran against........MARK FOLEY!

PS: YOUR COMMENT SYSTEM IS SCREWED UP, AGAIN.

Freshman shouldn't be allowed to run for president either.

One of my favorite sayings from gandalf..

"..tis easier to say then to unsay.."

florida dems are missing the boat here and it will sail w/out them. I don't envy them later when the boss comes to visit them!

user-pic

Primary that guy.

Word.

More and BETTER Democrats

user-pic

what's the problem you guys are having commenting?

user-pic

We're just low on snark, the primary just ended, give us some time to recharge our batteries. Other than that, no problems.

user-pic

Oh, ok -- CT Voter above said there's a problem...

user-pic

I got bumped off--wouldn't accept the password with the username.

So I clicked on "log out" and got the "too many connections" or something error statement. Got back onto to TPM (and recognized as CT Voter) but when I went to EC, and tried to comment, bot the "error, password incorrect" or whatever the wording is. Tried to log out, again, go the "too many connections" or whatever, again.

Rinsed, repeated, got the same results, multiple times.

Finally, I clicked my heels together and chanted, three times, "There's no writer like Greg Sargent", and voila, something worked, and I was able to log out, finally, log back in and be accepted.

All true, except for the heel clicking part.

user-pic

I get that "too many connections" message all the time. From what I can tell, you're actually logged in, but the server thinks you're trying to log in a second time. I seem to remember fixing it by closing down my browser and then starting a new session. Sort of a pain in the butt.

that was so goooood.

and that mis placed reply was for nisleib. troubles with comments/replies placement.

1. Asks me too often to log bag in. Once a day is often enough, if that often, given a secure connection.

2. Most of the time, the re-login at the bottom of the comments does not work. One has to log out and log back in.

3. Half the time, the logout process returns an error page. Am I logged out? Did my message post? Will Hillary consume YET ANOTHER news cycle? Pressing questions, all.

4. TPM would benefit from ignore and abuse flags. Not censorship. Put the tools in the hands of your users and they will manage it.

5. I really don't mean to complain. Your site is among the most readable! Thanks a ton!

I get the same problem. I usually have to log in twice for it to work.

user-pic

Most critical thing (beyond the login fixes it needs) ...PREVIEW function.

I tried to reply directly to a specific commenter on a different thread, and it bumped my comment several commenters below, disengaged from my intended reply to the specific commenter.

that he's remaining officially uncommitted for now, and wants the opportunity to lobby John McCain on key local issues.

Um, he does realize that his super delegate status does bupkis for McCain, right? He realizes he is a Democrat, right?

His congressional district sure does pick winners.

This isn't that strange at all. First, Childers and Cazayoux had very little connection to Obama and had not endorsed him, which made the GOP ads comical. Second, you can bet that a lot of Democrats (especially in GOP districts) will keep their distance from Obama. I'd be surprised if Childers, Cazayoux, Taylor (MS), Shuler (NC) and congressmen like that endorse Obama and many others (like Space and Lampson) will probably not do too much to help him. The point with FL-16 is that it's not THAT republican a district. Bush only won it by 8%, so there is nothing that justifies Mahoney's behavior.

No matter. Wexler is a dynamo. It's only June.

Obama/Wexler '08!

Gawd, I loathe Florida politicians. Seems like the Republicans are always ten times more vile than average and the Democrats are ten times as spineless.

Wexler, apparently, excluded.

Obama/Wexler '08!

actually, i think i know mahoney's real problem....it's ok, obama will do it with the help of those who are committed to move past that which is beyond our control....floridians need to remember these names.....i know i will..

Maybe he's afraid because it's a red district to begin with, and then there are a lot of Clinton supporters there? o_o

Then he shouldn't have said a word. Especially the talk of leaving his options open to "lobby" McCain.

Interesting choice of words that, but he should have known better to go public with it.

Agreed. Even though it sounds too much like "If you don't have something nice to say..." lol.

But seriously, if you can't get on board with the Presidential nominee of your own party, then at least have the courtesy to not flirt with the idea of endorsing the other party's candidate (I'm looking at you as well, Sen. Lieberman).

A pimple on the ass of progress.

Screw this Clown.

The train's leaving this asshat behind.

The Hillary Grassroots Campaign is proud to announce that we have joined the coalition to just "Just Say NO Deal." http://www.justsaynodeal.com Millions of disaffected voters or "pumas" (party unity my ass) have banded together to form this coalition of the unwilling... - Just Say No Deal!

All aboard the Straight-to-Hell Express!

I got an email from "Florida Democrats for Hillary" praising and endorsing Obama. I don't have it anymore so I'm not sure who was on it, but I thought it was a lot of party people. (In the house.) Does anyone have that? I imagine this is not going to go over that well with party elders.

Leave the guy alone. If he thinks not endorsing Obama will help him get elected then that's his decision. You want him to get elected..or a republican?

user-pic

Yeah! Inbred is as inbred does . . .

What are PUMA'S?

we are a coalition of millions with one thing in common: NObama

So what exactly are you and the twenty people listed on your site planning on doing in November?

user-pic

So you give less than a shit about any of the things Hillary Clinton claims to be a fighter for, up to and including making sure Roe v. Wade is not overturned. For you it is nothing but a vitriolic cult-of-personality fanboy/girl thing and not about positions, principles, policy, or governance.

Any Clinton supporter who claims that they are either sitting it out or voting McCain, who is the polar-opposite of what Clinton says she stands and fights for, is an utter fraud.

So why do you support Clinton yet hate everything Clinton says she is fighting for so much?

How can you really care about what she says she cares about if you are so willing to knowingly work against what Clinton says she is fighting for by either sitting it out or voting McCain?

Either you are a Rush Limbaugh troll, or an intellectually fraud (not that those are mutually exclusive). In either case, you are simply full of shit.

"Anybody who has ever voted for me or voted for Barack has much more in common in terms of what we want to see happen in our country and in the world with the other than they do with John McCain, I'm going to work my heart out for whoever our nominee is. Obviously, I'm still hoping to be that nominee, but I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that anyone who supported me ... understands what a grave error it would be not to vote for Sen. Obama." - Hillary Clinton, CNN, May 14, 2008

What are cougars? A Puma trying to get laid!

user-pic

Once again, Florida.... These are the people we were supposed to allow to decide the nomination? He wants the chance to "lobby with McCain"? Does the little nitwit think a hypothetical President McCain is going to remember this and be his BFF?

Late update:

John McCain has issued the following response to Rep. Mahoney's remarks:

What? He wants to meet me in the lobby with ideas? Good! I need ideas. Are they mavericky ideas? Which lobby? What time? Did I tell you I knew William Jennings Bryan?

This is the guy who replaced Foley no?

Refused to declare as superdelegate as late as last week

*U.S. Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Palm Beach Gardens: "I will continue to be an independent voice speaking out on behalf of my constituents. . . ."

So Eric's post is a wee bit misleading

F-ing stupid rich people. Sorry, I had a "I knew there was a reason I hate Palm Beach Gardens and all their freaking gated (jail you out)communities" moment.

Let's swap out Florida for Puerto Rico. It's a good 2fer. Puerto Rico can then break away from the US, and become an independent nation, and we can forever end Florida's decisive importance in any Presidential election.

I hate Florida. This proves my mistrust of the asshats there was not a fluke. But I confess I love one Floridian, I love Robert Wexler, but he can come up here to New England, we'd be happy to elect him to something important.

GOOD FOR YOU BUDDY!!

WAY TO GO ...!

THIS IS GRRRRREEEEAAAATTTTTT!

YOU GOT MY VOTE IF I EVER MOVE BACK THERE!

user-pic

You want to vote for this asshole because you like the Iraq war, like not having UHC, like a shitty economy and like having Roe v. Wade overturned?

Because that's what you are willing to vote for if you even entertain the notion of voting for McCain.

Lestat, you night walker, McCain will not do anything to overturn Roe V. Wade. He is pro life but he is not going to be in a position, nor will our Supreme Court be in a position, to overcome Roe v. Wade.

You are using the same "scare tactics" that Dems so hated Bush for using ....

You need to get a new record.

user-pic

There almost assuredly will be two vacancies (most likely Ginsberg and Stevens which are two pro-choice votes) likely during the next four years on the SCOTUS, and McCain has explicitly stated he will appoint justices like Scalia and Roberts (both who disagree with Roe v. Wade).

To pretend otherwise is willful ignorance (or in your case, blowing divisive bullshit out of your ass in order to stir divisions among Democrats).

user-pic

You might wanna read some of this nitwit's other posts before bothering to engage it.

user-pic

Well aware of the sad history of this fake Clinton "supporter" who is a racist GOP troll.

Ah, Lestatdelc, I think RaeKa just hates YOU, that's all.

user-pic

I bet you didn't have a problem when Michelle Obama said she wasn't sure if she would vote for Hillary if Hillary was the nominee.

Hello President McCain.

You are so on the mark Miril1

They are hypocrites just like obama and michelle

The democrats who won in MS and LA don't have the same politics and stands as Obama. They won because they're of conservative mold, hence, tactics to associate them with Obama failed. They're democrats in name only -- much like Lieberman nowadays.
Tim Mahoney is doing what Obama would have done in his place.

user-pic

What is with this guy, you ask?

Won word: Cuba.

user-pic

One word. Sighs heavily.

Tim Mahoney is sort of useless. I guess he's just trying to establish his "independent" credentials in case Obama runs poorly in his district come November.

He is a fool for saying he's going to "lobby" McCain on local issues, but I don't think he necessarily needs to have a primary challenger considering the redness of his district and the trouble we would have holding it otherwise. I know Childers and Cazayoux won their special elections in much redder districts, but they were also solid, inspiring candidates unlike Mahoney. Tim Mahoney won because of a fluke and I'm sure his district's voters would return a Republican to the House if Mahoney were not: (a). an incumbent and (b). in the majority party. This is the problem we get sometimes with so-called "self-funders." They've got enough money to often make races competitive without relying on DCCC or DNC cash, but they are usually really inept politicians and/or public servants.

Nevertheless, I'm certainly glad he is in this seat rather than Joe Negron or whomever it was that stood in Mark Foley's stead after Pagegate '06 (or as Wonkette called it, Cocktober Surprise).

Millions! Or just a few dozens? Even Taylor Mash is already on board of the O-Train.

user-pic

Sorry, but you have no idea just how much money is sloshing around Palm Beach County. It is the county the Republican tax cuts were designed to help. Mark Foley was the Republican bag man in the most affluent of Republican districts. That is why Denny and the rest closed their eyes to his unwholesome recreational activities. The current guy will soon be gone. Cut him a break. He doesn't have a choice. His only hope is to run as a DINO.

Tim Mahoney is in an incredibly red district. Don't forget how he won his seat. Not only was he running to replace Mark Foley- Mark Foley's name was still on the ballot. Mahoney was running against Republican Joe Negron. Negron was not able to get his name on the ballot in time, and the courts ruled that the votes for Foley would count for Negron. Negron STILL came close. Mahoney is more than likely looking for new work as we speak.

Hello All:

This Michelle person has actually migrated from Daily Kos to TPM. There is a journal/entry on Daily Kos about Michelle (whatever) and PUMA (whatever). I think she/he is looking for a home, and rests where people respond.

The collective decision at Daily Kos (and perhaps other sites) was not to respond to her coments, and I think (not sure)that she/he left that site and is now here.

BTW: For those who are interested in the entire economics call from the Obama campaign yesterday (Greg posted small excerpts, but did not have much to say about the substance of the call), The Field gives access to the entire call.

P.S.: I remember being first introduced to the topic of green-economy ? listening to Obama's talk with a paper's editorial board in Wisconsin during the primary race there. He knew alot about it, and also knew the specifics of how Wisconsin's economy had "retooled" for a new economy (unlike, maybe, Ohio?? Michigan?? Don't know). The Field also has a critically (as in informed/thoughtful) analysis of Obama's Americas policy talk (given last month in Fla).

BTW: I don't know about the LA race, but they guy in MS won because of the increased enthusiasm and participation of African American voters in the district! (and yes, AAs can be "conservative" also). That is one reason why Obama at the top of the ticket is good downticket, whether people want to be associated with him or not (Distancing oneself from Obama seems short-sighted, but I don't know anything about the Fla case).

Voter registration is so very important!

Correction:

"comments" not "coments"

The Field doesn't have the entire economics call, but does have details from the call.

Thanks...

For the info on the Fla district. So am I to understand that Dems weren't going to hold on to it anyway???

i think that the florida democrat is very upset with obama and the way he treated hillary. she was really put thru alot of trouble. and he is so high and mighty. plus i am sure he feels more comfortable with mccain's values. obama really has a problem with true blooded americans.

the florida democrat is very upset with obama and the way he treated hillary

So true! I mean, Obama had the gall to win the party's nomination, without her permission! How rude!

Sheesh. No wonder Colbert tears Florida a new one every chance he gets.

I just hope he understands that when Obama wins, Rep. Mahoney will have just slightly less influence than a Congressional janitor. His pro-McCain stance may make him popular in certain parts of Florida, but in DC next year he might find himself locked out of certain rooms.

Memo to Rep. Mahoney's constituents: buy yourselves some bacon, because you're man ain't gonna be bringing any home.

Allen Boyd, another Democratic congressman (mine) in Florida's 2nd District (Northwest Florida, which leans very Republican) has made a similar statement about "remaining uncommitted." I have written him and encouraged others to do the same.

History will tell whether the win was valid or whether the DNC made sure the Superdelegates gave the essentially tied election to Obama. Even the best scenario of the popular ote put him ahead by 0.4% (i.e., four-tenths of one percent)Not exactly a landslide and surely not a mandate.

Remember how we felt about Bush claiming a mandate - and he "won" by four percent - that would be, what, ten times the margin Obama had - even counting everything the way Obama wanted it counted....

So Bush had many times the mandate Obama has. Why does he and why do his supporters think the other half of the Dem electorate is trash to be trashed? it's not like it's 20%, you know, it's like fifty percent. Obama needs these voters....

Contnuing to insult them desn't help Obama's cause. And there are other alternatives.

Try being ciil to the other half of your party.

Hey Ms. or Mr. Freaktown..
It is disappointing that Tim Mahoney is not blindly following the Democratic nominee to be the president. Florida Democrats don't need another kick in the ass. We already got one when the DNC decided not to count our primary in January, after the Republican controlled Florida legislature moved the primary date on us. It's time the DNC got the kick in the butt for messing with us. Half of our delegates' votes do not count in the long run, especially, when they were given AFTER the nominee was selected. As long as the DNC and the RNC allow states which are 95% white and not representative of our country, like Iowa and New Hampshire, to have such a huge voice in selecting our party's nominee, the troubles have just begun. Tim Mahoney is my new hero. And Debbie Wasserman-Schulz is my representative, whe is no doubt the best respresentative in the country. You should be so lucky. We won't vote for Obama, and we may not vote for McCain, but in order for our votes to count... we have to do something.

user-pic

Beat it, Mahoney, and take Lieberman with you.
