Election Central Morning Roundup

Obama Camp Gives Donors Fundraising Goal For Hillary's Debts
The Obama campaign has put some teeth in its request to donors to help Hillary Clinton's campaign retire its debts, assigning them an official goal. "Barack has asked each of us to collect five or six checks to help Senator Clinton repay the people who provided goods and services to her campaign," wrote Obama national finance chair Penny Pritzker in an e-mail to top fundraiser.

Obama To Appear In Pennsylvania, Then Raise Money With Clinton In DC
Barack Obama will hold an economic summit today with various national business leaders in Pittsburgh, an area that was not particularly kind to him in the primary and where he'll need a strong general election showing. He will then head to DC tonight for a fundraiser with Hillary Clinton -- a show of party unity in front of a crowd of her own donors.

McCain Campaigning In Ohio
John McCain will be holding a town hall event today in Cincinnati, a Republican-leaning area in a state where a loss would make it very difficult for him to win the White House. Expect McCain to stick with some of his standard themes from the last few days: That he's serious on energy policy, that Barack Obama isn't offering any solutions, and that Obama has broken his promises on campaign finance.

Obama Campaign To Deploy "Persuasion Army"
In its strategy for the general election, the Obama campaign plans to rely on what it calls a "persuasion army," confirmed supporters who will talk to their friends and neighbors about the campaign. Campaign manager David Plouffe favorably cited the Bush campaign in 2004, which employed the same tactic.

Swift Boat Financier Doesn't Pay Reward To Kerry Allies
T. Boone Pickens, the chief financier of the Swift Boat Veterans For Truth, has unsurprisingly declined to pay his offered $1 million reward to anyone who can disprove the group's 2004 allegations against John Kerry's war record. A group of veterans who served with Kerry submitted a total of 54 pages meant to prove that ten specific charges had been lies.

Cash-Strapped Dem Convention Cutting Volunteer Field Trip
The Democratic National Convention's organizing committee, which is currently $11 million short of its fundraising goals, is scrapping its plan to reward the over 12,000 volunteers with a post-convention trip to the Denver Zoo. No doubt they'll meet enough goofy animals at the convention center, anyway.

Yeah John, I love your "solutions" to the energy crisis, with "solutions" like those, who needs problems?:

http://www.thepersonalispolitical.com/2008/06/mccainbush-oil-scheme-pure-deception.html

I'd allow offshore drilling, but with strings attached. Real poison-pill strings, like:

* The "SUVs are cars" amendment, which would declare that any vehicle with a back seat is a car, not a light truck, for CAFE purposes. This includes four-door pickup trucks.

* The Strategic Reserve amendment, which would have the federal government contracting to have the wells drilled, then capped. The oil underneath would then be declared part of the Strategic Oil Reserve, thus making further purchases of oil for this purpose unnecessary. The original SOR would then be pumped out and sold on the open market. Since most of this oil was purchased for a fraction of the current $135/bbl., selling it off might recoup the cost of drilling the government-owned offshore wells.

Either one of these is bad news for the oil companies, and would result in howling from Republicans. It would be a fun thing to watch on C-Span.

Off topic, perhaps. But did I miss whatever informative EC post might have been headlined........ you know, a timely focused post in which we could review and discuss McCain's possibly illegal behavior with respect to public financing?

Nice run down of McCain's energy policy Lux.

Oh yeah, late yesterday the Senate voted 80-15 to invoke cloture on the FISA bill. McCain, Obama, Clinton, Byrd, and Kennedy were the non-voters.

McCain, Obama, Byrd and Kennedy have excuses, what is Hillary's?

Dunno, getting ready to join Obama on the campaign trail? I just found it funny how people were claiming Hillary would suddenly become the warrior queen of the net roots now that Obama's supporting FISA.

As I predicted long ago she is doing her level best to see that we get a Democratic President -- upstaging Obama on this issue would not help his chances. I expect we will see them vote in lock step until November.

I disagree with her stance since I see no evidence that Obama is even a small d democrat.

Her excuse is that it ain't over till the fat lady sings. Hillary has not released her delegates and Denver ain't over. hillary is still in the game.

Recall, she believed she did not need to concede until the convention. So, she has plans and she is not going to make any votes that Obama doesn't.

The Clintons have not hung up their gloves yet, this match is still on.

Obama obviously knows it too...he said yesterday, he believe Hillary would be a great surrogate for him and when asked about Bill he said he said he was sure he would not want to 'upstage' his wife at the unity rally on Friday. Now, Bill is in London to celebrate Mandela's 90th b-day...but let's be clear. Obama sent a message guaranteed to tick both of them off. He has to assert his leadership of the DNC and particularly over these two or he will be sucked down into the cesspool of their traumadrama.

Sounds like a decent plan Steaming Pile. But it'd be bad news for the parasite speculators who are driving up the price of oil way beyond what makes sense. The oil companies are still going to refine and distribute the products.

Persuasion Army? I'm into Obama, but this had better be less weird than it sounds. It would be good to see some specifics about what Plouffe has in mind.

"confirmed supporters who will talk to their friends and neighbors about the campaign."

???

Well, of course that's who they're talking about (it could even describe me, if I had the nerve to approach neighbors and family members about their choice of candidate). But Kate Phillips's Caucus post suggests that these folks will be mobilized in some kind of centrally-controlled operation. The Obama website doesn't seem to address this (as best as I can tell). I just wonder what exactly the Obama campaign is going to do.

Don't be a worthlesscitizen. Go to Obama's website to find out.

Is Terry McCauliffe working on bringing in 5-6 debt-retirement checks for Hillary? I hope so. He could sell an umrella in the desert.

"Pittsburgh, an area that was not particularly kind to him in the primary."

Obama lost Allegheny county, but he won Pittsburgh proper by 20 points.

Looks like Hillary won't be contradicting Obama on FISA...

Perhaps the farging Democratic Parties Convention would be paid for if their leaders would stop selling out on their duty to depend the Constitution and our Constitutional rights . . .
