Bill And Hillary Max Out To Obama, Giving $4,600 To His Campaign
Wow, the unity love is really gushing today.
Hillary spokesperson Mo Elleithee confirms to me that Bill and Hillary Clinton have now maxed out to Obama, donating $4600 to his campaign today.
It's a strong signal to the Clinton fundraising elite and donor base that the time has come to open the wallets for Obama. It comes a day after the Obamas similarly maxed out to Hillary's campaign to relieve it of debt.
Late Update: Check out our highlight reel of today's Obama-Hillary unity event...

it's about time. please continue w/ releasing your delegates to show UNITY!

She can't release her delegates, because if she did, then her campaign would dissolve and she wouldn't be able to retire her campaign debt.
Howard Dean kept his delegates until the 2004 DNC Convention.

We may need Hillary as a nominee or to release her delegate to a worthy candidate if Sen. Obama continues to throw everyone under the bus. The FISA Bill was an excellent opportunity for Sen. Obama to demonstrate courage and leadership but instead he caved and showed us a spineless politician unwilling to stand tall for his principles. Even his adversaries were stunned by his cowardice.

Oh, you know Hillary would have done EXACTLY the same thing. There are maybe five honest Democrats in Congress who genuinely care about their country and that's both houses. However, that is five more than the Republicans have.

However, none other than Obama is campaigning on the message of new politics and not that same old, same old Washington politics. That means only Obama's campaign message can't be trusted.

Hope y'all are ready for Clinton as VP, as much as I think others are more qualified/better choices, I think we should all be prepared.
June 27, 2008 3:17 PM | Reply | Permalink
I actually think exactly the opposite. Today made it clear, Hillary will still be in his flank and doesn't have to opt her for VP, if he doesn't want to.
June 27, 2008 3:19 PM | Reply | Permalink
No way.
Aside from the baggage issues, she doesn't help bring a state, she's another Senator and, according to the polls, Obama has already picked up most of her base.

To say nothing of the fact that I can't see Hillary wanting to be #2.

nor would Bill......

He needs independents and among other reason it's one reason why he doesn't need her on the ticket. Actually, I'm not even sure she thinks she has a real shot at being on the ticket.

VP nominees rarely bring states. The last time anyone can be certain that a VP nominee delivered a state was LBJ. That's a long time ago.

I said "help." And it's certainly not the most important qualification, but it's a consideration. All things being equal, I'd err with a popular governor from a purple state (Missouri, Virginia) over a Senator from NY.
That said, it's a moot point, really, because all things are certainly not equal and Hillary being from NY is the least of my worries.
June 27, 2008 3:35 PM | Reply | Permalink
Missouri has an unpopular REPUBLICAN governor. I'm all for unity and all that, but I don't think we really want that.

Totally agree on your points, however to me it comes down to the standard operating procedure for a close primary and in particular, what happened in 1932 (call me crazy). FDR, also had a tough primary battle that year and he chose Garner (the runner-up) to be his VP. FDR was also the odds on favorite to to win that year.
I just have inkling that all this isn't just for show. IMHO. I could very easily be wrong.
Of course, y'all know who I want for VP....

Maybe he isn't the one who will find the Grail - because that's only given to the purest knight; I'd rather have the strongest and smartest knight right now - not Percival. I'd rather have Lancelot or Gawain.
And I also want a president with a very clear public mandate so he can get things done and that isn't going to happen if he stays over to the left on everything during the campaign. This is about everyone trusting him, not just us.

June 27, 2008 4:43 PM | Reply | Permalink
I totally agree. Percival (and Galahad) maybe have been the purest knights, but they were the least interesting. Give me Arthur, Gawain, or Lancelot any old day!

I'm just loving all the kissy face nicey nice. It rocks. I like to see Democrats working together.
Good for HiIlary and Good for Bill. I may send her campaign debt $100. I said all along that I might voluntarily do it- I just had no intention of doing it subject to demand.
But major props to both Clintons for this. And big Thank Yous.

Hillary for VP just doesn't work. For one, she is too powerful a figure and politician to be wasted at VP. She deserves a cabinet position with real clout, Secretary of State. Obama is looking for more of a conventional VP. Dick Cheney ruined it for everyone else. Hillary could bring her experience to play as Secretary of State, and it would give Big Bill a chance to go gallivanting around the world as a "Goodwill Ambassador".
June 27, 2008 3:54 PM | Reply | Permalink
No freaking way. Obama will not have the clintons anywhere near the cabinet or the whitehouse for that matter. Secretary of State? Are you kidding me, so that she can dodge more sniper fire. Can you imagine all the freaking drama for no drama obama. Back to the senate.

I'm sorry, but she still creeps me out Halloween-mask style. And Bill is eewwwww. They're creepy creepy creepy, like ... bedbugs. OK, I got that out. As you were.

She's not going to be veep.
For all the reasons people have already stated, plus they both started out in Illinois - and that almost never happens.
I don't see why she'd want to, anyway. If I were her, I'd go for governor of New York. I really think that's her best step up.

But the Obamas gave Hillary's campaign $4600 days ago. Isn't this essentially a wash? They could have just kept their money.
June 27, 2008 4:03 PM | Reply | Permalink
Eh - those were personal funds, not campaign funds and it's campaign debt she has, not personal.
June 27, 2008 4:09 PM | Reply | Permalink
Not exactly true. Take, for a minute that both the Clintons and the Obamas used community funds to make these donations. Obama could have instead used their $4600 as self-financing for his campaign, and Clinton could have used their $4600 as self-financing for her campaign. There are no limits on self-financing. So it is, essentially, a wash.

I guess the only thing the inquiring (not) minds in the media will want to know is "Were they sincere when they signed those checks?"
"Did they really mean it?"
"Did Bill have to be talked into it?"
"Will the checks bounce?"
Ok, that last one was mind, inspired by Dorn.

Of course. CNN has to fill those 24, and they have to be entertaining; and Faux has to keep its audience awake, which ain't easy, since they are broadcast mostly in waiting rooms and nursing homes.

Ahhh, that explains it. Now I know why cnn is trying to be worse than fox entertainment. They are plaing for the waiting room and nursing home crowds. Thanks. I was trying to figure out what happened to cnn. It has gotten beyond pathetic.

They finally admit there's not a rat's hair difference between the two of them on both policy positions and their ability to change any "deeply held belief" if it means benefitting personally or politically from it.
Bravo. The Sellout Party party was a roaring success.

Great stuff. I like Hillary so much more when she plays nice. VP is no go, and she won't want no. 2 anyway. I still think she'd be good as Senate Majority Leader. (Not happy with Reid's performance there either).

It'll be a mistake for Hillary to take the VP spot inasmuch as Obama needs her to win in November. In the event that the ticket won, Obama will get all the credit. And if the ticket lost, Obama's campaign and the entire Dem leadership will all blame it on Clinton.

CNN, is fighting for ratings. Faux is beneath contempt, they have waged this 24/7 agenda to bring down Obama and rather than present accurate information they send our inuendos to incite fear. How they sleep at night os beyond me.
CNN is stepping over that boundary of no return. WBlitzer, that self righteous Lou Dobs, these interviewers ask their question and if they don't get the response they like they rephrase the question a different way. Especially Blitzer, he is turning me off from every angle.
These people give more of their opinions than anything. Did anyone ask them for their opinion?
June 28, 2008 3:21 AM | Reply | Permalink
Despite all of the incite and opinions, I hope Obama will be able to pick his own VP. I don't think jamming a specific person down his throat for the good of The Party will dictate success!

Sounds like a tax scam. No net money changes hands, but each get's to write it off on their tax returns. Not that it's a big deal - a couple of grand. BushCo ripped us off to the tune of several trillion dollars killing two birds with one stone: 1) tranfering public wealth and middle class wealth to the upper class, and 2) bankrupt the federal government so that entitlements can be dismantled. Even some Democrats have bought in to the idea that entitlements need "reform" to deal with debts. The reform that needs to happen is to return government operations to the public and eliminate privitization.

Hillary as VP? I used to think I would want that but no more. I hope he never offers so she doesn't have to turn him down. Since I think he is going down in flames (esp. without her) it means 2012 is hers.
