Alarmed GOP Sends In Bush To Help Save Mississippi Senate Seat

Here's yet another indication that national Republicans think they're seriously at risk of losing a key Senate seat in deep red Mississippi: President Bush is set to visit the state on July 1, for a fundraising event with appointed Sen. Roger Wicker, the Tupelo Daily Journal reports.

Recent polls have shown a close race between Wicker and Democratic candidate Ronnie Musgrove, a former one-term governor -- even though Bush won the state by a 60%-40% margin back in 2004.

This visit tells us two things. First, that Republicans are genuinely worried about this seat and are moving to build up their financial advantage -- and given the state's deep conservatism, a loss here would be devastating. Second, there is at least one state left where a Republican would actually want Bush to visit on his behalf.

That's rather odd. Do we have any polling there?

the latest poll was Musgrove ahead by 1.

considering Wicker is the incumbent and only getting 46%, that is not a good sign

This will end in tears, Wicker.

Good. I hope Bush and Cheney campaign aggressively from now til November.

There is nothing that would help Dems more.

I wouldn't be so sure MS is welcoming of Bush. This state is polling surprisingly soft for McCain and MS was screwed by Bush during Katrina ('Heck of a job, Brownie' was said practically on Trent Lott's front yard). I think there is a lot of anger against Bush even among MS whites and THAT should tell you something about the depth of the anger across the rest of the country.

Yeeeehaaa!!! Send the king everywhere. Awesome strategy. Go mcbush!

They're sending in Bush? I'd of thought they could have arranged a weekend pass for Charles Manson. But I guess not.

Your kidding! Sending Bush? he who could not be bothered with the Gulf Coast Katrina victims for about 5 days. Remind them of how unconcern he was about their plight so they can fote for the Democrat? GR8888888888TTTT strategy by the GOP!

This is fine, but do we want Musgrove to win? He's that religious nut who was involved in the Ten Commandments spat, wasn't he? Do we really want to support a Democrat who has no respect for the separation of church and state?

I'm not advocating a litmus test for Democrats, but some things are too important, too fundamental to our democracy, to ignore.
