Report: Top Hillary Supporter Harvey Weinstein Threatened Pelosi
Looks like another extremely high profile Hillary backer may have threatened Nancy Pelosi in an effort to help his gal:
In a heated phone call with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi late last month, Hillary Clinton supporter Harvey Weinstein threatened to cut off campaign money to congressional Democrats unless Pelosi embraced a new plan by the movie mogul to finance a revote of the Democratic presidential primaries in Florida and Michigan, according to three officials who were briefed on the contents of the conversation.The three officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk publicly about the private phone conversation, said Weinstein, a top supporter of Clinton's presidential campaign, appeared determined to buy Clinton more time in her battle against Sen. Barack Obama by pushing for the revote and pressing Pelosi to back off her previous comments that superdelegates should support the candidate who's leading in pledged delegates in early June.
Weinstein vehemently denied the threat to cut off funding.
In March, twenty top Hillary donors tacitly threatened to stop funding the Dems' effort to beef up their House majority in order to get Pelosi to shift her stance on the role of the super-dels in the nomination process.

Well, as appealing as that thought is at first glance, it would be illegal.
The reason we have limits on the amount an individual can donate to a campaign is precisely to prevent people like Harvey Weinstein from doing exactly what he was trying to do with that threat.
(The exception to the donation limits of course being that a candidate can contribute unlimited funds to their own campaign.)

Earlier Hillary stated, "...our campaign caters to the hard-working Americans, White Americans!" That statement has sparked much concern from both blacks and whites (even Hillary supporters) across the country. The desperation of The Clintons is not only exposing their deep rooted ills, but becomes more destructive to not only the Democratic Party but the Unity of America. This final tactic is just proof that NOW is the time to end this campaign. HRC's comments this morning in the USA Today interview are particularly revealing. I know that in my predominantly black neighborhood of DC that the it is not just the white people that work hard, but the black people are up and on the metro by the same time going about the daily grind.

Great discussion on Lehrer last night on PBS. Very enlightening talk of all these labels. Namely, how all blacks are just lumped together, not working class black or wealthy blacks or blue collar blacks, just blacks. Also, how all this talk of white, working class votes makes it seem like they are the only important vote. The only votes that matter. What does race baiting mean? What does "playing the race card" mean? Can anyone really define what some of these terms mean? Great discussion. Thank you PBS.
Long story short, all this labelling by the media is not good and really dehumanizes us. Were all human here, were all Americans, were all voters.
It's a pretty slippery slope the media rides.

I think what's pretty clear is that the electorate is more sophisticated in these matters than some of our candidates take us to be. When Hillary hangs out that red herring and claims to have the White, blue-collar vote in her hip pocket, she pisses off and offends an awful lot of voters - Blacks of all economic strata, other ethnic groups, White non-blue collar voters, and yes, even the White blue-collar voters who she is so callously stereotyping.
Hillary is spinning these results to draw out racial dynamics at play, when in fact there are likely some very strong economic factors at play in these results. Bottom line - her strategy won't work and will likely backfire to some extent. It makes her look bad. Gives Obama the opportunity to look great in contrast.
Doesn't bother me when she does this, because I think it hurts her more than it hurts Obama and is a good prelude to the GE. Play on, Hillary, and by all means, stay in character. We wouldn't expect anything less from you.

Before I call the DNC, I'd like to know if there's any specific, rules-based premise to ask them to enforce based on unethical behavior, or undermining the party, etc..
I've called before to protest the inclusion of FL and MI. Only a 50/50 split is fair. Just because one candidate breaks the rules doesn't mean the other candidate should be penalized for upholding them.

I'm guessing there's nothing really against the rules about a donor expressing the conditions on which they give money.
It's just incredibly inappropriate, lacks all class, and gives the appearance that gov't can be bought.
It's also a bit clueless, because he's reportedly given about $400,000 over the last ten years or something. Obama raises that in small donations in a day.
So if Pelosi is really concerned about the money coming in, and you force her to choose a camp, which is she going to choose?

An intelligent assessment of how the media is mishandling the race issue.
Accuracy is essential for journalism. So when Howard Wolfson makes one of his 10 daily appearances on every news station and implies that white people won't vote for Barack, or Hillary's base support is white people, the media need to do a better job at removing Wolfson's "marketing of the race issue" from a more thorough discussion--just because Wolfson separates the electorate into blanket generalities--blacks and whites-- doesn't justify reporting the news that way.

The Weinstein story is interesting. Obviously he was trying to buy Hillary some time. He was also threatening uncommitted congressional super-delegates at the same time. The fact that we know about the call tells me that 1) Pelosi is pissed and 2)the uncommitted congressional super-delegates are about to jump. This is not good news for Hillary.

H.R. 534, the Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2003, was introduced to the U.S. House of Representatives on February 5, 2003. After discussion, it was passed on February 27 by a vote of 241-155. This bill makes it unlawful for any person or entity to perform or participate in human cloning, or to ship or receive embryos produced by human cloning. These now join other nations as diverse as Norway, Australia, and Germany, which had already added cloning for any purpose to their criminal code. And in Germany where it carries a penalty of five years imprisonment they know a thing or two about unethical science.
