Poll: GOP Senate Incumbent Trailing In Mississippi
In yet another indication that Senate Republicans are really playing on defense everywhere this year, a new Rasmussen poll has bad news for them in even the deep-red state of Mississippi, with appointed Sen. Roger Wicker (R) now trailing former Gov. Ronnie Musgrove (D) in a race that's within the margin of error:
Musgrove (D) 47%
Wicker (R) 46%Sample size: 500 likely voters.
Margin of error: ±4%
As we noted a few days ago, Wicker is already up on the air -- having to introduce himself to voters in a state that President Bush carried with 60% of the vote in 2004.
If the Dems were to manage to knock off a GOP Senator in the Deep South, it really would be a massive victory.

Wow, since it's rasmussen, he must be down by 6 points or more. I see 60 coming. Awesome.

And note that Obama does better against McCain in Mississippi than Hillary does, which means Obama being our nominee will give us an edge we wouldn't have with Hillary. Just one of many Senate seats we have a good chance at picking up thanks to Obama.

Why the hell wasn't there a post on THAT?

Yes. That is huge news. Saw it on Kos where it was posted along with the Senate poll. Apparently not big enough news to warrant a mention from Kleefeld though.
Something very NOT surprising about that, I suppose.
At any rate, if there is a chance of Obama running within 10 of McCain in MS through the summer, it will actually make McCain spend money and time in my neighbor just to my south. And IF that is the case, well, I will be laughing and laughing and laughing, perhaps unable to stop.

This is just funny.
I'd like those GOP strategists who think McCain is going to win by 60 electoral votes to spin this puppy.

In fact, it was a white Catholic priest
Not gonna matter. It was in Obama's church (ya know, the one Obama owns) and therefore, raises the question, yet again, of why Obama knew Jeremiah Wright in the first place.
Or something like that.

You may want to fix the lead-in on the front page which says the margin is 44-40%. This looks like a confusion with the Presidential poll out of Michigan this morning.

I went to Mississippi to help with the cleanup the summer following Katrina. Things were still a mess, and the insurance companies were doing the Alfonse and Gaston paperwork shuffle. Even Trent Lott sued his insurance carrier. One of my fellow volunteers worked for a major carrier. He couldn't tell anybody who he worked for because he was afraid, very afraid. Folks were mad as hell and Haley Barber was not as well loved as the national media were told by the RNC. You could almost feel a change coming.

Amen. If we can put Wicker between a rock and the insurance industry, former Gov. Musgrave might take the election.
May 29, 2008 4:44 PM | Reply | Permalink
Obama will surely help with the down ticket races, and in Mississippi especially. Wicker is not Lott and is really known, I imagine, mainly in his previous congressional district. Now Musgrove being a former governor will be well-known state-wide so he will have less 'introducing' to do. And this being a Democratic 'year' also helps with the potential election of Musgrove to the Senate. It just looks like a positive for Democrats down there. The South needs to be more 'blue' anyway so why not also in Mississippi. works for me.

OK, this is good news, sure,... but if I lived in Mississippi, I'd probably be voting for the Republican. Wasn't Musgrove the religious nut involved in that idiotic Ten Commandments stuff? We don't need Democrats like that. We aren't desperate enough to abandon our fundamental principle of the separation of church and state, I hope!
I don't know if the Republican is much better, but Musgrove looks worst than useless. We've been stung before by right-wing Republicans pretending to be Democrats. Let's remember that.
