Obama Gets Four More Super-Delegates
Barack Obama has made further progress on the super-delegate front this morning, picking up four to Hillary Clinton's zero thus far today.
The Obama camp rolled out the endorsement of former DNC Chair Roy Romer on a conference call with reporters this morning. Obama has also picked up three others: New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin, who was previously selected as an uncommitted add-on delegate for Louisiana; District of Columbia party chairwoman Anita Bonds; and Indiana Congressman Joe Donnelly, whose district voted narrowly for Hillary Clinton in the primary.
Late Update: Here's the audio from the Obama campaign's conference call:

How many times do I have to explain this: Superdelegates *do not count*. Period.
The only thing that counts is West Virginia.

I'm sorry, but I keep thinking about her reaction to these supers and I can't help but think her response would be like this:

Especially given that her WV win will be, well, less than "monumental" given the number of delegates she will actually net.

Though likening her to Hitler is way too harsh, that video made my day. Thanks, Carol.
I'd love him to just lay 12 on the table today. Just to make a point.

I'd expect it to be low, just like in MI and FL.

No problem with West Va. In the past week, Obama's supers have obliterated any pickups Clinton will have in pledged. It's over. It's been over for months, but it not my money. let her go on as long as she wanted. Vanity wars. Vanity campaigns.....

It would be an interesting move if Obama really is "staging" his superdels to roll out exactly as many as she wins in WV / KY right after each primary. She picks up 17 in WV? He rolls out 17. That would be a bit over the top, but it would be pretty funny to see, nonetheless.
I don't really buy the argument that they have all this support lined up that they're feeding out piecemeal, anyway... I'm sure it is true to a degree, but not to the extent that it's been hyped up.

How many days in a row does he need to announce 1-2, (now 4-5) per day to convince you that he has a stash of unannounced Supers?
May 13, 2008 12:36 PM | Reply | Permalink
I think the supers are trying to spare her feelings and probably more important trying not to alienate her supporters any more than they already are.

This is the akin to what a business goes through when it declares bankruptcy....the "winding up" phase. Your clients (Superdels) don't run full speed to the other guy, because you are still spouting BS like "we can win this thing", and "our position is strong". But the writing is on the wall, and even some your long standing clients (Joe Andrew, Rahm Emmanuel) begin to jump ship.
It is only a matter of time before they start loading up the boxes and filling their pockets with office supplies on the way out.

He floated Bloomberg as a possible VP. I imagine most Clintonites would agree with that pick because that eliminates possible competition for Hillary in the Governor race.

Interesting. Always another angle at play...
But if NY is such an obvious Dem pickup in November why do we need Bloomberg on the ticket? Better to look Virginia or midwest/southwest...

In addition, he does nothing for the ticket that others couldn't do better. No foreign policy experience, no state that he could deliver, no widespread name recognition. The cute part of Hillary's collapse is how she is now pressing to get a slot on the ticket -- yes, it makes perfect sense to offer the VP slot to someone who has been openly contemptuous of your fitness for leadership; to someone who has used your racial background to scare away voters; to someone who has refused to reveal names of the $500 million donors to her family's foundation; to someone whose husband, a former, impeached and disbarred President, has spent much of the past year trying to define you as a fringe black candidate. The idea that Obama cannot win without her is ludicrous; the fact is, without her, his chances of winning increase 200%.

Sen. Clinton is the ex-girlfriend from Hell.
It was a very wild ride when you were intimate with her. After leaving her, she just never goes away, but becomes a psycho as in the movie Basic Instinct with Sharon Stone. For example, you find your voice message machine filled with tirades about how she will fight to keep your love, your cell phone messages are filled with her comments about needing your love, she stalks you and your new girlfriend everywhere you go, refusing to just leave the scene. She demands money for all of those times in the past, reminding you she who stood by you when all others forsaked you.
I'm not quite sure what to make of Sen. Clinton in light of the bigger prize: trouncing McCain (Bush-Rove-Cheney) Republicans and setting our nation on a new course to rectify the damage wrought over the past eight years. Perhaps Sen. Clinton hasn't got that memo, either. perhaps she sees hereself as the "fighter" of those older women and blue collar types - strange play given her "elite" background and penchant for absolute power & loyalty ala Bush Administration's style.
HRC's ardent supporters, as Amy Pohlman's skit portrayed in Saturday Night Live, refuse to be honest with the rest of Progressive Democrats. If Hillary represents them, and they see her as their crusader, what does it say about their make-up and mind set? Do these Americans want a pyrric victory just to prove a point, too?
Above all, I'd counsel Barack Obama's camapaign staff to treat HRC's gang like a bag of vipers. They are not to be trusted and any overture made needs to be put into context. Given the behavior of HRC, there is NO WAY she should be offered a Vice Presidential ticket. There are far more qualified persons out there who can serve to unite the Democrats and the rest of America, AND offer far more savvy managerial acumen.

Ahhhh... Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct was not a psycho "ex-girlfriend/lover" character per se. You might be mixing it up with Glen Close in Fatal Attraction.

My vote is with Wes Clark for VP.
Evan Bayh has been put forward as a compelling choice - and I love Webb, but I agree that it is best to keep his Senate seat safe. Seriously.
May 13, 2008 1:07 PM | Reply | Permalink
The same logic would dictate not selecting Bayh either.
His seat would likely flip if he's not holding it.
May 13, 2008 1:11 PM | Reply | Permalink
Plus Bayh = DLC.
But from an economic standpoint, Webb is as populist as they come. If you're going to put a Senate seat at risk, do it for someone who's worth the potential price.

Webb's also going to be senior Senator in 2009 when John Warner retires - an extra reason for him to stay where he is.

Fla. stance on delegates shows Clinton's campaign is over
Beth Reinhard | Miami Herald

MIAMI — Florida Democratic leaders are expecting some mercy from the national party on May 31 when it reconsiders the state's delegates to the nominating convention. But as Barack Obama continues to expand his lead over Hillary Clinton, Florida's delegates matter less and less.

Which is bad. Pledged delegates need to "stay within the rules". Otherwise what's the point? This would make Hillary actively start courting pledged delegates to get them to switch to her...

DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Florida delegate drama nearing a finale
Instead of acting as swing voters in a history-making race, Florida Democrats are left nitpicking over how many activists will get to go to Denver in August.
http://www.miamiherald.com/campaign08/story/530668.html
Excerpt:
''Everyone wants Florida counted, but at this point, what does it matter?'' said House Democratic Leader Dan Gelber, a Florida superdelegate who endorsed Obama last week. ``I don't see how [Clinton] catches up.''
The Democratic National Committee took away Florida's delegates because the state broke the rules on scheduling presidential primaries, rendering Clinton's Jan. 29 victory meaningless.
The appeal filed by DNC member Jon Ausman of Tallahassee seeks to restore half the delegates -- the same penalty imposed by the Republican National Committee for the early primary. Ausman, who has been meeting with members of the DNC's rules committee, said he is certain the group will allow the state to send some -- but not all -- of its representatives to the convention.
But the state party has already chosen most of the 211 delegates and is slated to appoint the last 40 on Saturday. Another DNC member from Tallahassee, Allan Katz, said the state should hold off.
''The one thing that we know is that we're not going to send a full delegation, so we're ensuring that delegates who have been elected will not get to go,'' Katz said. 'It's almost like saying, `I dare you.' ''
