Obama Begins Veep Selection

In another sign that the Obama campaign views the race for the nomination as essentially over, Obama has reportedly begun his search for a running mate, tapping former Kerry adviser Jim Johnson to head up the selection process.

This is obviously a subject the Obama camp can't discuss publicly at this point, with Hillary Clinton still in the race and arguing that she is the more electable Democrat.

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLRIGHT!

Man, we need to be getting on with it - McLame is just merrily picking running mates and redecorating the oval office while we battle the undead.

It's not much of a secret if the AP is writing about it. As close to the vest as Team O has played things, anonymously sourced articles ("Democratic Officials) have almost ALL been wrong (Greg, you remember getting burned by one don't you).

This is just an attempt to FURTHER raise Clinton's pseudo-ire. Her campaign will be in full victim mode this morning....

user-pic

We need to issue a Red Whine Alert.

From their most select sour gripes.

Well crap, when he's going to do this search, September? He has to make preparations for the highly likely event that he's the candidate. I'm really curious who ends up on Obama's list. On a side note, it seems McCain isn't considering any female or African American candidates.

When he's ready is probably the only answer any of us could truthfully give. Frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if they've been busy going about the process since the end of February when they wrapped this thing up.

My point is that unless one of the Senior Team O people are on record, I've found most "anonymously" sourced articles about the inner workings to be WAY off base. Remember the 50 supers in their back pocket? Taking it to Fox? Those are just the two that immediately come to mind, there are plenty of others.

Well, this article is actually naming a specific person that will be heading up the committee. If the article was just "hey, some anonymous source says Obama's probably gonna go look for a VP now," I'd agree that it would be sort of an unnecessary story.

Good Chess move. Now when someone asks Senator Obama about picking Hillary, he can just say that he does not want to inject himself into the preliminary search process.

Obama/Biden 08

I really wouldn't be surprised. I'm not sure if he'd be interested but I guess every candidate has that disclaimer attached to them.

This is obviously a subject the Obama camp can't discuss publicly at this point, with Hillary Clinton still in the race and arguing that she is the more electable Democrat.

Eric, honey - it's only obvious if you buy her bullshit. Otherwise there is nothing "obvious" about it.

Sorry. He can not put someone on the ticket that has been in Washington that long.

It would torpedo his "change" campaign.

The fact that their is a search sends a signal that Hillary has no entitlement to be VP. Good move. I hope Hillary doesn't even make the list.

Do you really think Senator Clinton (and President Clinton for that matter) will submit to the vetting process?

How would they even get through a vetting process, even if they did submit? I mean, really, think about the baggage they carry around. That part of the interview alone would take hours.

Then there'd be questions along the lines of "Have you ever said or done anything that might cause trouble later for the Obama candidacy? Something that Republicans could put on their air to use against him?" Her only answer would be "Hmm, well, I said he wasn't ready to be Commander in Chief. Oh, and I wasn't entirely sure he wasn't a Muslim. Oh, and subliminal messages about him being (whispering) black.

Hillary has already made her VP selection. Months ago she offered Obama the job. (Cue the applause light, accompanied by much laughter.)

Gee, do you think "Nuclear Hillary" will be on the list??

Can you all imagine the chaos you'd have if the Rules Committee voted in favor of giving Shrill everything she wanted?? Then again, since there's no chance in hell of her getting what she wants, nor even a rats ass chance of the nomination, nothing to worry about.

OBAMA/WEBB '08

Jim Webb or even Wes Clark would be great - impeccible and impressive military backgrounds, something that can supplement Obama's lack of military experience that the GOP would love to nail him on.

Hillary meanwhile has a draft dodger husband to bring to the table.

Webb!!!!!

Clark!!!

I like Clark a lot - voted for him in 2004. But he's not a great campaigner.

user-pic

No Webb. We need him still in the Senate (a seat we would probably not hold were he to step down, and Obama does NOT need military/foreign policy training wheels).

Rendell, Strikland or Edwards are solid choices. They would help with his "Appalachia" problem, and while I was not big on Edwards, the SurveyUSA polling in PA on what he would bring to head-to-head match-up vs. McCain and his VP pairings changed my mind.

The only VP pick for McCain that has me worried is Gov. Crist of Florida. That one gives me pause. The rest are disasters for McCain.

user-pic

I like Webb a lot for the position, but I got the impression on Olberman last night that he's not really interested in the position. He certainly wasn't lobbying for it, going into detail about the problems Obama has with Appalachian Voters.

Also, I'm not sure he's interesting in rolling up his sleeves and getting dirty in a bar room fight with McCain, who has been his good friend for 30 years.

All I know is that I don't want to hear from Bill or Hillary's supporters that Hillary should get the VP slot ... they are so quick to cry sexism by big, mean chauvinist male dominated society anytime anyone dares suggest what Hillary should do with their campaign, they don't get to say what Obama should do with his.

OK Folks:

A tip on how you can rebut the expected Clinton whining about Senator Obama being too presumptive, and not given the remaining voters a chance to cast their votes before he conducts a VP search.

Simply remind them:

A long time ago, Hillary offered the VP position to Senator Obama. She was the one who did not wait until someone had won a majority of the selected delegates, like Senator Obama has done.

user-pic

liam liam liam - do you really think our trolls will just say: "OK, that makes sense," shut up?

LOL!

Tena,

but of course the rebuttal will be posted for all the rational readers to see, and that is the real reason for pointing it out. We need to talk past the Trolls.

You exhibit a keen understanding of the reasoning behind the Care and Feeding of Trolls approach. :)

Johnson did the same job for Democratic nominees John Kerry in 2004 and Walter Mondale in 1984.

Oh boy. Ferraro and Edwards were brilliant picks!

user-pic

Ooooooooooooo shit.

Yep.

Perhaps he's being hired to figure out who not to pick.

lol, so democratic officials leaked a story about a veep selection process that the nominee wants TOP SECRET?

sound like Clinton supporters I guess.

That Obama is starting a VP search is NOT a secret. It was deliberately released to the press. The secret part is the process and the candidates who will be vetted. If you don't understand this rather straightforward distinction, perhaps you should withhold commenting on it.

Who wants to bet if Shrillary were the nominee (something that's impossible, I know), Geraldine Ferraro would be at the top of the VP list?

OK, after Obama, it would be Ferraro.

Seeing her panic more and more each day, seeing her pundits on the talk shows trying desperately to defend her and her so-called "popular vote lead" (did anyone watch Dan Abrams last night when her former press secretary got double-slammed for the bullshit "pop vote lead" talking point) - this is beyond entertaining for Obama supporters!

The only person hurting Shrillary Clinton is.....SHRILLARY CLINTON!

user-pic

O thank you for that. When I read what she was saying in Florida yesterday, I was furious. I knew she was touting the Popular Vote lie in order to set this thing up so that she could pretend it is just like Bush v Gore, and she's Gore and Obama is Bush and that is exactly what she has been doing.

She said as much yesterday when she compared this PRIMARY to the 2000 Election.

And she knows she's lying and that just makes me furious - she is exploiting what Karl Rove did to us in order to make a Rovian play for power.

She makes me sick. She and her husband and all the thugs, thieves and liars around them.

She also compared the situation to Zimbambwe, which seemed...excessive.

Hillary. Just say NO! (not that I think she has a snowball's chance to get it).

God NO CLINTON..Bill's ego is pushing HARD for HIll. The sound of their voices at this point !
HELL NO HILL !!

Tip O'Neill is the person to blame for the Ferraro pick. He is the person who pushed Mondale to put a woman on the ticket, and urged him to make it Ferraro.

Not so fast, Buckwheat!!

This is a slap in the face to my ... 14.2 billion supporters around the world. What is more, it's sexist. Geraldine said so.

I have the highest debt ever realized among candidates; I'm hot-shit in Puerto Rico and in states where people don't have teeth; and I lead among 8 to 14-year-olds by almost 2-1.

Pandering yours,

Hillary

user-pic

Pick Webb, pick Webb!

Obama/Webb 08.

Obama's working on two fronts: patronizing she-who-doesn't-need-anymore-attention and getting on with the general election. Bravo!

The former will be dealt with in the next two weeks, this has been the same story for a couple of months now. The later will takeover in the coming weeks. Obama and McCain are basically parallel in their VP timing, so all is fine there.

I'll make a plug for Richardson. I'd like to see the Dems sweep the West.

What constitutes a winning ticket:

Two Senators on the same ticket is a proven way to lose.

Kerry/Edwards. Gore/Lieberman. Dukakis/Bentsen.

A Senator/Congress Rep. is even worse.

Mondale/Ferraro. McGovern/Eagleton.

Do you see the pattern of failure folks.

Rule out all Senators and Congress Reps from being on the ticket. It is a sure loser. Guess who that then rules out. Bingo!

Who should be on the ticket. Someone from a large state that needs to be put in play, who is still winning big on a state wide level, and has proven that they can deliver their state to the candidate that they backed.

Forget about picking someone with a military career, that has never won a state wide election, or an election of any kind, on the ticket. The VP slot is not one to take a chance on by picking someone who has never won a major political contest. This is not amateur hour.

I think part of the reason I like having a governor on the ticket is it reminds me of an argument Kos made about endorsements. His essential point was that governors or mayors that can bring a "political machine" with them are the most valuable backers of a candidate. I think a governor veep just has a greater chance of carrying their own state.

user-pic

Which makes it Rendell.

Webb all the way!

Sots-Irish and military credentials and former GOP'er = McSame has no chance

I agree , I adore Webb...I am just afraid that the Hillary women will call him sexist and boycott the vote ! Barack could also choose General Jones, or Zinnini.. But he needs some military experience on the ticket..That is for sure ! I love Webs take not bullshit style ! It's a good combination with Barack. I have always thought that if the poor whites and other minorities would join forces instead of seeing each other as competition; The government could be changed for the better !

i got an email from airamerica today (signed by thom hartmann) asking me to support an obama/hillary ticket. (i unsubscribed.) now i know why seder doesn't have a job there. OTOH, in the name of diversity, maybe we should have one person on the ticket who supported the worst foreign policy disaster in a generation, and one who opposed it; one who wants to scare up a war with iran, and one who doesn't. way to draw a distinction with the GOP.

and i tells ya, O's running mate oughta be bob grahampa. i know he's old, but he's got gravitas, opposed the war, was head of the Senate Intel committee, will win us florida, etc.

The guy Al should have picked in 2000. I'll certainly grant that.

Kerry should've picked him too. He was apparently the choice if Edwards declined.

Yes, they cannot discuss this publicly.

They can however "leak" it to TPM and KOS, who will provide all the free publicity, via Obama News Network MSNBC.

Breathtaking (but no longer surprising) hypocrisy. What else to expect from TPM and Kos.

The guy who hasn't won the nomination is manipulating the public perception into the new inevitability. Irony, a-la Obama.

Hillary offered the VP spot to Obama months ago. She is the one who did not wait for the voters to elected a delegate Majority winner, as Senator Obama has done. Stop your whining. Hillary is the one who announced her VP pick while she was getting her Arse kicked.

edit:
to elect a delegate majority

LOL, delegate majority leader is a talking point that has the same weight as popular vote. Both campaigns are spinning, but for the fanbase here only the OBama's spinning is valid. Blinders on, as always.

It's a delegate race. Why the hell else would they go through the trouble of breaking the vote down into delegate spreads?

You are spinning yourself silly! The delegate lead is not a talking point, it is how we choose the nominee. Popular votes, particularly the HRC camp's tortured interpretation of them, is a talking point. And it is funny, funny stuff to hear you get upset at how Obama is effectively casting himself as the nominee, and moving to the GE against McCain. Kinda like Hillary playing the presumptive nominee for a year before a better financed, better run campaign beat them fair and square.

Keep whining, I'm sure it won't be long before you will be talking about how you just "can't vote for Obama". We won't be surprised.

Yeah, that's why four states don't even count popular vote. But they ALL count delegates. It's a delegate race, not a general election.

Get it? Got it? Good.

Two Senators or a Senator and Congress Rep on the same ticket is a certain loser. Just look at your history folks.

It has to be a popular governor that put a large state in play.

We need a proven winner that can deliver a large state, such as Ohio. It is not about who you like, it has to be about who can deliver the state that puts us over the top.

user-pic

Webb and Clark are both stiff campaigners, but Webb might be the only person in a position to help with Appalachia (see his book lauding the Scots-Irish).

I am not so sure about Webb being the only person who could help with the white working class appalachian vote. What about, in a nod to joe sixpacks everywhere and to HRC (and to avoid the dreaded double-legislator combo), Ed Rendell? As a two-term governor and former mayor of Philadelphia, he would effectively secure PA for Obama. He has a real regular joe style that would play well in places like Ohio, and perhaps even in WVa. He has some good economic policy chops and a good record in that area. He has been talking about energy independence since before the 2006 election. He is a true democrat. Downsides: he won't do anything to salve the gender-based voters(and might actually hurt somewhat in that regard, given his reputation as a bit of a player), he doesn't have much of a filter on his thoughts-to-lips connection and consequently says some stupid/unhelpful things.

Here are two glaring problems with Rendell in my opinion:

1) He's not particularly popular in PA. Rendell is a classic Philly machine pol, which means he brings with him an extensive patronage apparatus and can effectively pull the Philly suburbs. Problem is, machine veterans often lose popularity quickly once they reach prominence. Strings have to be pulled, deals made, shady connections nurtured to get into power, and those tend to be exposed over time. Also, big policy decisions tend to be made without much accountability in such an atmosphere, and this has hurt Rendell over the years, especially among independents.

2) Since Rendell is a machine politician, he would be a horrible fit for Obama's change-themed campaign. It would be a sign that the anti-corruption rhetoric is merely that, just words, and will deeply undermine a major advantage against McSame.

I've been thinking about this for quite some time. After listening to the various contenders endorsement speeches and how they speak of Obama, I've reconsidered somethings.

Gov. Time Kaine or Sen. Claire McCaskill deserve definite reconsideration. They speak very well for him.

Tim Kaine inparticular seems like a good choice to me. I was very moved by this speech and he was one of the first people to endorse Obama. Give a listen:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkQ04Tk7dTk

Also, here's another in Spanish:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqz9unCxJgM

Obama said he was looking for someone he could trust more than anything- that's Kaine.

Richardson should be Secretary of State- end of story. He is sooooooo qualified for the position.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tim_Kaine

Catholic, pro-life, religious. Could be good. I sincerely believe we can get some the people that voted for Huckabee.

I really do.

I'd also like to state I am pro-life and a recovering Catholic. I don't particularily like Kaine's postition on every issue, especially these, but I think he would be very, very good on the campaign trail.

Is there any truth to the rumor that BILL Clinton got a call last night at 3AM from the Obama campaign to report for duty . . .

Obama-(Bill) Clinton '08!

As an ardent Obama supporter, I can assure you of this:

If senator Obama's running mate is a US Senator, Congress Rep, or a Military person who has never won a state wide contest in a larger state, then the Republicans will retain the White House.

Can you explain?

Following Jim Webb's recent insightful and highly relevant comments about Appalachia and racial sentiments he really should be considered the top-tier VP candidate, as long as he passes a vetting process for skeletons.

Webb argues very well that

1. There is bias against black and brown minorities in Appalachia, creating a wall for Obama.

However, 2. It is not merely racism, but a feeling that the affirmative action programs of the 60s went beyond historical justice for African Americans to aiding other minorities and in effect at the expense of the socio-economically poor in general (e.g. whites also in poverty).

Therefore, 3. If Obama were to speak to this cultural group with this understanding in mind he would be able to reach them.

I have heard this idea floating around before (on Slate?) that perhaps one of the most dramatic, powerful things Obama could do to win mainstream America would be to propose transforming affirmative action programs from being racially based to being purely economically based.

The "Hagel as VP" rumor is a bit silly. He and Obama both don't like the war but they're night and day on many other issues, judging by Hagel's voting record.

I am agreeing that it will be a Governor.

My choices?

1. Gov. Strickland
2. Gov Rendell
3. Gov. Sebelius

We don't need Rendell to win PA...but I like him.

Strickland will carry OH for us.....

When we pick up CO (9), IA (7), OR (7), WA (11), CA (55), NY (31), IL (21), WI(10), NM (6), HI (4), DC (3), MA (12), MN (10) ME (4), VT (3), CT (7), DE (3), VA (13), NV (5), MD (10), RI (4), and PA (21), OH (20), and MI (17)....

All very plausible...

That is 293..... He could lose OH or MI and PN and still win it all.

And I think he has a chance in ND, SC, NC, GA, IN, AK, and even FL when he starts campaigning.

The electability argument is garbage. Obama has a clear and direct path to the White House and I prefer it to Clinton's.

This game is OVER. Obama '08

Back in March, I predicted that it would be Ted Strickland as the VP pick by either candidate. I am sticking to that prediction simply because it makes the most political sense.

That is supposed to be MI or OH or PA....and I know he will win 2 out of 3 if not all three of these states.

What do people here think about Strickland? He did not really impress me much during the run-up to the Ohio primary, but I don't know that much about him. Is he a good campaigner? Is he sufficiently locked-in in Ohio to deliver the state? Just because you are governor does not mean you are going to be able to do that. Does he have any odd policy positions (other than endorsing HRC, I mean)?

Here is a place to start reading about Ted Strickland.

He has a terrific resume in a key large border state. In addition he started out as a Christian Minister. That would certainly appeal to some cross over voters. He can deliver Ohio, and that would win the White House for us.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ted_Strickland

Thanks

Why on earth would a Democrat ever put a Republican in the VP slot. You would end up with a Republican voting on tie breakers in the Senate, and if something happened to the President, a not uncommon occurrence in America history, you would turn the White House over to a conservative Republican President.

Only a moron would think that is a good idea. If our party is not capable of providing a Democrat for the VP slot, then we do not deserve to even exist.

Who' your choice (one name only)?

I'll start if off:

Gov. Tim Kaine (VA)

Gov. Ed Rendell (with caveats noted in my post above)

Real or wet dream? I'll list both.

Real: Webb

Wet dream: Feingold

Gov. Strickland.

There was already a thread on the Obama VP debate, and I posted some of these thoughts there, to little response - but my ego prefers to believe that's because the thread wasn't listed on the front page shortly after I posted (coincidence, I hope)...so undaunted, I'll try again:

I'm just thinking back historically, and I wonder: how often has a VP choice really made the difference in the election? Rarely, I think. IMO, you'd have to go back to JFK/LBJ to make the point that it mattered, and I'm not sure that's even true. And a bad one doesn't hurt: I mean, HW Bush won with Quayle, for God's sake, and there was Nixon/Agnew for 2 terms. (BTW trivia question: who was Humphrey's running mate in '68? Muskie, maybe?)

Now, McCain - there's a guy who needs to take care with his VP pick, because his/her day may come before they know it. But if political calculation is the big issue - is it really a big deal? Assuming Obama doesn't pick Al Sharpton, is it that important?

Personally, I think his VP choice is pretty important this year. Obama seems a bit young for some people, a bit foreign to some people, and a bit too liberal for some. Of course he's also a bit "black" for some people, of which you can't do much about that.

So I think the key is finding a good moderate/centrist running mate, some one who appeals to independents and swingy Repubs, yet is also a solid Dem that opposed the war from the beginning or in the very least has publicly denounced it. Of course if they can land us a swing state that would be good.

That's the key this year, I think more so, than getting Appalachians, rust belt whites, and women.

That's why I say: Gov. Kain (VA) or Claire McCaskil(MO). Govs. Sebelius (KA) or Rendell (PA) could also be possible. Richardson should be Sec. of State- nobody fits the poz-ish better than him. Webb, unfortunately, has some sexism in his past.

I'd also like to add that I think overall another senator is a bad idea. McCaskill is such a great attack dog/defender of Obama and speaks so well of him- she has to be a contender and shouldn't be discounted. She also could put Missouri in play.

Obama's judgement has been sound so far. I have confidence he will pick a VP that we will support. I believe it will be a govenor; most likely in my mind is Richardson, Strickland or Sebelius. Each one can bring a solid block of voters and balance.

Air America email from Thom Harmann. Grode!

"Air American:

The issue at hand for the Democratic Party for winning in ‘08 is not losing to McCain but losing to a divided Democratic party. The first thing Obama should do if nominated is put Hillary on the ticket. Will the Republicans have a field day with her on the ticket? Yes! Is their some bad blood in the water due to some negative campaign strategies on the part of the Clintons? Probably. Can Hillary be a tough fighter able to play tough allowing Obama to stay higher above the fray? Yes!

Howard Dean said a few months ago that the loser will be the most important person in the Democratic presidential run this year. Hillary's legacy in this 08 election could place her as the healer and bring together a united Democratic party. As a winning ticket they also move this country closer to healing the racial and misogynist undertones that still have roots.

Can you picture Denver with Hillary's delegates close to half of all delegates demanding that she be included on the ticket? To some it's a crusade. If Hillary was the one out ahead - by just a little over half - wouldn't Obama supporters want the same?

Obama's offer and Hillary's acceptance of an Obama/Clinton ticket hold the healing and the power to move this country in the direction of the real change in Washington that Obama talks about. First he must bring the Democrats back together again.

Obama - ask Hillary first. And if she should say no, the offer would still have a unifying affect.

--Thom Hartmann"

Yep. I told you: Grode!

No way in hell. If Hillary really cares about the Democratic party, she should campaign her little heart out for Obama the second she drops out. But not as a VP.

Yeah, I threw up in my mouth a little when I read this. Air America is a little too endentured to Hillary IMHO.

Will the Republicans have a field day with her on the ticket? Yes! Is their some bad blood in the water due to some negative campaign strategies on the part of the Clintons? Probably. Can Hillary be a tough fighter able to play tough allowing Obama to stay higher above the fray? Yes!

The first two are BIG negatives that are in no way outweighed by the last sorta positive. If the only thing Hillary brings is a "tough fighter" then no thanks. There are plenty of "tough fighters" who don't have the Clinton's baggage.

I mean, come on. Who wrote this shit?

"Will she energize the Republicans? Yes. Has she said Obama is not ready to be President and can't win? Yes. But she's a fighter!"

Yeah, I totally agree. The first two questions, that they then answer, pretty much clinches it. Too much baggage.

Very silly. Personally, I don't believe Thom Harmann wrote that. He's too intelligent and well-spoken to write something in this style. I haven't listened in a while, but I could see him supporting this view though. Thom likes to build bridges. So I could see him agreeing to it. But no way did he write this himself.

Obviously, a push by the execs of Air America to get Hillary on the ticket. IMHO.

Dream : Webb

Reality : I don't know......

user-pic

Uuuhhh... Wait. I though HILLARY was the VP choice? Isn't she? Oh, I hope so. If she's not on the ticket, Obama can't possibly win. He's a negro. He'll need the help of a white person.

Why no one is floating the idea of Colin Powell as McCain's running mate? How awesome and unbeatable would that team be? In four years, McCain retires as a one-term President who finally stablizes the situation in Iraq. Then Powell takes over and becomes the first African American President. How sweat is that? - almost beating Hillary as the first female President!!!

Go Colin, go!!!

The way it looks, even though I'm a Clinton supporter who donated money after her Kentucky win, Obama is most likely to be the nominee of the Democratic Party. You all will deserve a nominee you wish for. With Powell running, the country is assured of an AA in the White House. For the first time, the black people enjoy the embrassment of richness. How nice!!!

You did see his "presentation" in front of the U.N. in 2003 before we invaded Iraq, right? Any he credibility he had then, he lost. Pretty sure the world thinks he's a jackass now. So do I.

Oh, really? The man has more integrity and a bigger heart than all you Obamabots put together!

beep boop beep boop boop powell boop jack beep ass! go beep away boop neocon beep 23% boop beep can't boop see beep light boop

oh and i'm sure he does have a big heart, i like powell, but he lost all integrity when he lied to the U.N. Sorry, don't blame me, blame the entire world who saw that travesty. Or you could blame Bush. Or Powell, for not standing up to Bush.

Never mind, Powell may be too old to join McCain's old team.

Dick Cheney

A very informal poll: based on browsing the comments on the Caucus in the NY Times, the favorites among Times readers seem to be: Webb, Richardson, and Sebelius.

Interestingly each of these picks would address a specific demographic: Webb - Scots-Irish working class; Richardson - Latinos; Sebelius - women.

Now if we had a Scots-Irish female governor from a working class family who is part Latino, we would have a super VP candidate.

Carlos O'Kelly?
