New MoveOn Ad Tests Obama's Cross-Party Message

A new third-party ad for Barack Obama could be considered something of a test-run for Obama's message that he can appeal to independent voters and crossover Republicans with his message of political change and withdrawal from Iraq.

MoveOn, the group known for being a voice of anti-war liberals, is now aiming for the Republican vote in their new spot, featuring an Army veteran and lifelong Republican's endorsement of Obama:

MoveOn is putting $200,000 behind the ad, to air it on national cable TV and in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Colorado.

Well Hello, Dolly! ;-)

It's so nice to have you back where you belong.

You're looking swell, Dolly....

We can tell, Dolly,

I've always admired Ms. Something.

Isn't she something?

Good ad.

I like this ad.

I wonder how long it will be before McSame supporters start smearing this person.

Wow! It packs a punch.

It'd be cooler if there was a statement or two as to why he supports Obama. I'd like to see more of this, as I know there are many, many disaffected Repubs out there. Let's give them some more air time.

Great Ad. Good subject choice- simple and clear.

This blod from Huff Post, short and well worth the read: If you have an inclination to vote for McCain, this should scare the hell out of you, not to mention any SCOTUS appointments.

Blog, obviously, sorry.

It's a good ad. The only negative reaction I had was when he said, "We need someone in the White House who is strong." Hillary instantly came to my mind. I also consider McCain stronger than Obama. I know the purpose of the ad is to brand Obama as strong, and someone who doesn't just represent liberals. But my immediate reaction to the ad as just that - I saw it as an attempt to brand Obama as strong and more center of the road. I hope it works. It certainly could, I suppose. It just didn't for me.

I agree that just saying he is strong isn't enough. It kind of reminds me of that genius slogan the admen came up with for the US military: "Army Strong!"

If they retool the ad, which I think they're going to do before airing it, I hope they slip in a few words about why he is stronger or better than the Republican standard-bearer.

Who are you, and what have you done with Otto F?

Otto: Given his upbringning and odds he faced in succeeding in life, I would argue he is damn strong. He has also faced something those of us that are white will NEVER understand, the judgment of a person by the color of their skin. That has got to make you determined and tenacious.

Yeah, but it's not enough to leave it to the audience to surmise why Obama is strong enough to lead this country. A statement or two as to why this particular Vet is convinced of that would make this ad a lot more compelling.

Lol...Otto..Strong..Hillary came to mind...What about when she whinned she was being treated unfairly..your amazing....Always lift my spirits...:)

I agree with elonpb..the Ad was good, not great.

I realize Eric is a touting this as a Move-On ad, but this was a contest held by Move-On and they got 100's of user-made 30 second ads from normal folks.

This one was selected from 15 finalists. I doubt they will modify it from this original format.

Ad is ok, nothing all that great. I'd like to hear specific reasons as opposed to going the "token war veteran" route.

This past weekend I spent some time with Republican leaning family members in upstate New York around northern Appalachia and I can attest that they are now more drawn to Obama (predicting he will best McCain) having faced and survived his various tests of the past few weeks.

Mike Bloomberg gets it too:

“Is she risking that Democratic dream for the rest of the country?" Maitlis pressed.

“No, absolutely not," Bloomberg said. "I don’t subscribe to this [idea of], ‘You're helping McCain by having a fight.' Quite the contrary, you’re battle-testing the candidates on the Democratic side, you’re getting all the bad news out, and they still survive," he said.

"I happen to think this is not good for John McCain," Bloomberg added. "Conventional wisdom is exactly the reverse, but I have to tell you…conventional wisdom is wrong.”

As stated everywhere else. This non story about Rev Wright Breaks in Sept...its trouble....That gunpowder has been burnt now. That in a weird way, I say that because Im still bitter about it, its good, it wont have the impact now and he also won a North caroline and Indiana within two points after the flap of it. So good things can come out of a bad situation.

However, the republicans have not been matched up one on one with Obama (like in the general) so they can start the Real pig slinging fest yet. So yes, Hillary does cast a stark difference to Obama, and that may attract republicans who want this shit to end too. At the same time using their playing field, their guns, reinforcing in the Dem Primary things they will do in a General election, which kind of erases that line that seperates us tactics wise from them, can not be a good thing. The media is not going to fight for the progressive agenda like they will the republican agenda...just remember that as we go forward

I dunno. Doesn't do much for me. I guess it's not a complete disaster, which, for MoveOn is an accomplishment. C+

Now if only the person doing the voiceover at the end of the ad didn't sound so incredibly metrosexual...
