New MoveOn Ad On Bush And McCain: "Think You Can Tell 'Em Apart?"

Here's a new MoveOn ad linking Bush to McCain that's just gone up in Phoenix, where the two men are attending a fundraiser today...

"They laugh alike and walk alike and sometimes even talk alike," says the ad. "Think you can tell 'em apart?" It's also running on national cable.

Now that was funny. I'd rather see these types of humorous ads than the nasty garbage. Thanks Move-on. Much better than the betraus garbage.

Agree wholeheartedly.

A Patty Duke reference? Wow. haha.

McBushCain; The Hybrid War Monger, gives the troops some "straight talk".

O no they didn't!

That's TURRIBLE!

So much for McCain's "Bush dodging" in Arizona!

Thanks, MoveOn! Hope this is a HUGE buy!

LOVE IT !!!!!

I loved the ad.... keep up the good work moveon

John McCain is the same old politican that George Bush is.

ooooh by the way.... its VP DICK (hahah) kin to Barack Obama....they are cousins.....

wow better not put him in the white house.

the only change would be to put hillary clinton in because she is nothing like george bush or john mccain and she ain't kin to good old VP DICK.

I thought Hillary Clinton hated moveon?

What the heck are you talking about?

I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

I second that.

This ad made me giggle, but I think the flippant tone would turn off a substantial section of undecided voters.

My personal opinion is that Move On needs to plunk down some serious cash on FOCUSED audience research if they want to maximize their effectiveness. I see a HUGE potential to pick up votes from independents and moderates who feel betrayed by the GOP.

This ad resonates well with people who already view both Senator McCain and President Bush in a negative light. In other words, an audience Move On didn't need to spend money to convince.

The audience with the biggest potential pickup, however, could likely take this ad as unnecessarily disrespectful to a decorated veteran.

I was interrupted before finishing this post.

I'm not saying that the ad is factually incorrect in any way. I think the core message is outstanding and almost air-tight. I just feel that the tone could be tweaked to have a wider appeal if the aim is to speak to swing voters. Who knows, this may not even be the objective of the campaign.

Also, I understand that people may see little advantage with building a coalition with the voters I'm talking about.

Spot on, Slouch. This is not the year to gloat and risk alienating anyone. They are soooooo done with Republicans. Let's remember that some got "feared" into voting for them in '04. Linking McCain to Bush IS the way to go!!!! But it's so easy, this isn't necessary.

Hey, Slouch! Cool name. Oscar sez hi!

I thinkee youz worryin overmuch. Not like we's Swif-Boatin dis Decorated Vetturn. Nooo, we aint no Karls Rover.

Sooo many peepul out dere bein sooo depressed. Gettin lied to an gettin theys pocketses picked by Dubya an his oil-prophet buds. An our sweet young-uns gettin blowed up an bein in debt to dem Chineese and havin four-buck gas bags. Mite almos say deys a lotta peepul out dere bein somewat bitter!

Nooo, a wee bit o humor an laff-makin is a good thing. We be needin some comix releef. Da tragedy we call Bush is so horritable dat any Sane Person lookin it strate inna eye be wantin to puke.

Enuf wid dat damn triangulatin shtuff. Tellin it like it iz widout paranoiafying about pissin off a few rednex. Time to be Movin On.

Thanks, Bill The Cat!

Yes, the damned thing is funny, freakin' funny. And good. People will get it, and it is catchy so they'll be singing it to themselves around the house (whether they want to or not). "2 of a kind" is good and truthful meme material where these particular 2 are concerned.

Different types of ads will happen too.

What did you expect from the tone-deaf jokers who came up with "General Betray-Us"?

I like the ad but you've made a good point. MoveOn tends to preach to the choir, rather than work on expanding the base. More often than not, they alienate middle of the road voters and a lot of the money that they spend on ads is wasted, for that reason.

MoveOn has a huge potential to bring about positive change, but they tend to be all echo chamber, no out reach.

I new MoveOn was doing good work as soon as conseravtives started equating it with such bad things as Liberals, Lawyers, the Labor Movement, and activism.

Good work!

Hilarious!

Freaking excellent retrofitted ad.

Who can't identify with it?

He is giving a speech on foreign policy to end nuclear threat to mankind.

Where did the warmonger go?

So you're backing McLame now?

Just exactly what I expected you to do, gotnolife.

Seeing as how he probably wants to invade Iran to prevent proliferation, it's not an inconsistent stance for him.

user-pic

w00t!

I love it - keep doing this - McLame is Bush.

Anybody catch Jon Stewart last week, juxtaposing the second of those two shots of Bush dancing with his pseudo-solemn mumblings about having given up golf because he doesn't want any "moms" of servicemen seeing him having a good time? I usually enjoy reacting with disdain to monkeyinasuit's efforts to seem adult, but in this interview he was shot fairly close up, and he came across as a real psycho.

I think this is a stupid ad that will not help with anyone who was not already voting democratic in the fall. If they had actualy used more policy statements that were identical perhapse it would have been more effective.

I actually agree with this. There are so many better ways to link McCain and Bush than doing it with a bad attempt at humor.

user-pic

LOL Not bitter enough for my tastes. People under the age of 45 won't get the Patty Duke Show reference. Having said that it's damn near perfect.

I'm 25 and I get it. But I grew up on Nick at Night. Dobie Gillis, anyone?

They're zeroing in on the demographic that is assumed will trend toward McCain.

user-pic

the only change would be to put hillary clinton in because she is nothing like george bush or john mccain and she ain't kin to good old VP DICK.

I think if dive into Hillary's gene pool you'll find she's related to Katherine the Great, King Edward Longshanks of England, Herbert Hoover, Marie Antoinette and the Hapsburgs.

It's wacky and fun, but I wish there were more substantial matching quotes. The recession one is good, but they also need a matching Iraq quote. Maybe quotes on how they both don't support the new GI Bill.

user-pic

Eh... I rarely agree with the way MoveOn does things, and this ad doesn't change my opinion. They rely too much on that snotty, "aren't we cool" insider garbage. This is mildly amusing, but don't they have enough money to do a little polling? Can't they afford to hire a professional to put together a real ad and target it to people who need to be persuaded? This ad preaches to the choir.

Yes exactly! This cute too cool for school shit just puts off the people you need to reach. EDUCATE instead of self congratulate! I can exactly picture the self important hyper snotty group in the room approving this ad and so can all the independents you will need in November. War is not cute and funny ..... link the bastards on the facts of war and you will accomplish something.

user-pic

I think it's adorable, but then, it's just preaching to the choir for me.

Maybe they're gearing it to Hillary supporters, most of whom would be of an age to remember the Patty Duke Show. (I'm 42, and I don't really remember the show, but my older sister and our cousin used to sing the song all the time.)

user-pic

This ad preaches to the choir.

That choir is about 70% of the nation. McSame, McBush whatever you want to call him is running for Bush's third term. If fits in perfectly with Obama's campaign, the Democratic party's campaign and it does it in a lighthearted mocking way. Mockery like it or not shows strength and irritates the opposition. An irritable McCain is a losing McCain.

Frankly, I wasn't impressed. I much preferred the DNC's "100 years in Iraq" ad. This MoveOn ad spent too much time emphasizing the only thing about Bush that's endearing - his goofballness, if you can imagine the word. The rest of the ad was OK, I guess, but it followed the goofiness that makes one laugh (and detracts from what he does that's not at all funny). I don't know...I think when it comes to ads with Bush-MCain, the more emphasis you place on the serious issues, the better.

Slouch, you're no slouch. I agree with you 100%. It's the tone of the ad that can backfire.

Why not... (bring in sinister music)

"Our valiant troops are doin' just fine RIGHT where they are..." Bush? No, McCain.

"A polished chrome Cadillac in every garage..." McCain? No, Bush.

"Healthcare? Hell, I got these stitches in the ER!" Bush? McCain? Both!

See, I can't take 'em seriously either, but you get my point.

I like the way you think, Lovelynina. Much better approach - keep educating the voters about how much McSame represents Bush's third term.
