New McCain Ad: He Cares About Global Warming, But Won't Increase Taxes And Regulation
In an attempt to expand his base and reach environmentally conscious voters, John McCain has a new ad laying out his position on global warming.
The ad positions McCain as a moderate between left-wing extremists who'd like to increase taxes and regulation versus right-wing extremists who deny the problem:
The ad is set to air in Oregon, a key swing state that has voted Democratic since 1988, but often by narrow margins.

I actually like how this ad was laid out, and Obama's definitely got to amp up his advertising for the general election.

So what's McCain's idea, then? Prayer? A rain dance?

OK, that cracked me up. :)
Tactically, I think this is an excellent ad for McCain. I'm as cynical as everyone else here, but I think that this ad will resonate with most of the low-information voters. That it lacks substance is undoubtedly a good thing (politically), because it makes it harder to attack.
In addition to low-information voters, I think this ad will at least salve the consciences of many mid-information voters who realize that climate change is a problem, but who really, really hate taxes.
Finally, I am glad to see McCain at least giving undeniable lip service to environmental problems, but I will be very sad if such lip service ends up winning out over real action.

If anyone anywhere thinks Oregon is voting for McCain this year, you are officially smoking crack.

Just watched the ad. It's good, but it lacks, what's the word . . . substance on McCain's position. Pretty damn pathetic if you ask me.

Wonderful, so we get lip service and no action. This fits in with his "free money" gas tax holiday. What's next? Free iPods for everyone?
I love how McCain has destroyed his "brand" to appeal to the rightwing. He is officially the bullshit express.

The problem is that so many people have a hard time telling the difference between bullshit and straight talk, that it just might help McCain.

“I believe that climate change is real” John McCain
Pay close attention to what he actually said. He did not say global warming. You have to pay close attention to the words that Republicans use, because they
always try to play the weasel words game.
Since McCain does not propose taking action to solve the problem, it sounds like he is going to rely on a “faith based” solution.
This is McCain making the same sort of empty statements that he did about a Gas Tax Holiday.
He is moving the lips of his Pander Bear, but has no intention of taking any action.
If you love being Pandered to, then McCain of The Panderosa is your guy. He will make all the empty promises to you that you are willing to swallow.
John McCain has crossed The Panderer In Chief Threshold.

Actually as far as I've seen climate scientists just about universally prefer the term "climate change" to "global warming". "Climate change" is actually in some sense a more extreme thing because it emphasizes that the problem isn't just things being a bit warmer, it's that our entire climate system is going to be changing as the mean temperature slides up.

The McCain waddle should never be shown on TV.

My friends, just remember because I am willing to acknowledge that climate change is real, unlike my good friend George W. Bush, that has to mean I'm really an environmentalist. After all, he has set the bar so low that I can actually look like one even though my ratings by the environmental groups are in the 20s. Just listen to the rhetoric and listen to the news media call me a maverick and pay no attention to my actual record.

Ha! Which reminds me that a college student recently told me there is already a drinking game based on whenever McCain says that disingenous and nauseating "My friends...".

If they play that, perhaps they can sue McCain for inducing alcohol poisoning. Just any five minute stretch of one of his speeches would be enough to put someone in a coma.

McCain's position prior to this campaign has been in favor of a government regulated cap and trade program.
Here is the latest bill Lieberman introduced on the topic with McCain as a cosponsor.
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=s110-280
Interestly, Obama (and Clinton) are also co-sponsors of this bill. So if he is running away from his Seante position on this topic, this just another pander to the far right.
It is pretty sad too because he has fluanted his support of GHG regulation as one of his differences from the Bush administration, now it appears he is back in lock step with the Bush/Cheney no plan.

So.. one side denies the problem, the other offers governmental solutions (aka regulations); my, moderate solution is the acknowledgment of the problem, but the denial of any solutions. We might call this the half a loaf is better than nothing strategy. Too bad it leads to the same place as denial.

McCain is starting to remind me of Fred Thompson. Huge pre-hype, huge hype ad infinitum--and here comes Fred--bumbling, inarticulate, doddering Fred, who never could string a simple sentence together, let alone hold up his end in debate. Empty shirt. Bye, Fred. And yet somehow he found backing. Go figure.
McCain has no platform, no depth, no plan. There is no there there. Rumors of a cross-country tour of townhall debates?. Barack Obama will annihilate him. Obams is brilliant and prescient with tons of ideas. McCain will lose his temper again and again when words don't materialize for him. Yikes. I can't wait. :0)
