McCain To Meet With Potential Running Mates

John McCain is taking a major step in the general election campaign, as he prepares to meet this weekend at his Sedona ranch with three individuals who have been mentioned as potential running mates: Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, and his former rival Mitt Romney.

McCain has reportedly taken a very hands-on approach in the selection of his running mate, so the stakes will be very high this weekend for the three men involved. Of those three, each offer pluses and minuses: Crist would bring a big state but is distrusted by some conservatives; Jindal is young and would be a non-white person on the Republican ticket, but has only been governor for less than a year; Romney became a favorite of establishment conservatives during his campaign, but the two men also came to dislike each other in the process.

Cindy McCain's age:

I was just reading at Slate about HDTV and oldie John McCain and it made me look up Google images, including this one of Cindy McCain:

Databases (at least veromi) give her age as SEVENTY-ONE. I think this clinches it. She's 71. I'm about to turn 41 and in the decade-plus it'll take for me to reach her alleged semi-youthful age, no way will I get all of those wrinkles or that leathery brown-spotted crypt-keeper chest skin.

Cindy McCain is OLD. She's OLD, PEOPLE. She's OLD AND SHE'S A LIAR.

I think Cindy is 54 or so. John's first wife is probably 71. Remember he dumped Carol McCain, the woman who stood by him and raised their children while he was in the Hanoi Hilton when he realized Cindy was a really rich woman and dumb enough to fall for a married man in a uniform. A real man of honor that John McCain.

Question, when is Joe's interview?

I'm no McCain fan, but he didn't meet Cindy until 78, he divorced from his first wife after that and he and Cindy were married in 82. More than ten years after Hanoi Hilton incident, there's no reason to resort to smear against McCain, he'll hang himself with his own ideology.

Right. McCain came back from Hanoi to find that his wife had been in a serious car accident and was crippled. She wasn't pretty anymore and needed help. He did what any red blooded America hero would do, he found rich Cindy and dumped Carol. That he might have been in the process of dumping Carol when he found little miss heiress doesn't excuse him. He traded Carol in like she was old socks. I am afraid that is the way he will treat you and me if he is elected. Sorry, the truth isn't a smear, it is the truth.

A non-white person on the ticket would be a huge negative, taking away the reason for those special "working-class whites" to vote against Obama. Jindal is just the token nonwhite person they'll pretend to take seriously.

Crist might get picked, but McCain has a good shot at winning Florida even without him, so he'd be better off going with a Southern governor (though obviously not Huckabee). Mark Sanford, Bob Riley, or Haley Barbour fit the mold.

Jindal sure would turn the Appalachians red. I don't mean red as in republican, I mean red from all those heads exploding when they realize that a non-white person will likely be the President in the next few years.

It's obvious: McCain/C(h)rist

As subliminal messages go you can't beat that one. You think they wouldn't play that up? Google for "Charlie Christ" (in quotes). The first hit is www.charliecrist.com.

ok I will point out the elephant in the room
Crist is gay -
not that there is anything wrong with that

I think it would be so ironic is if the first Gay VP was a republican but I seriously doubt that crazy religious right would appreciate that Republican VP was homosexual

Charlie Crist, whose lead in the Florida gubernatorial race is shrinking a bit, does not have sex with men. That’s what he claims to the Broward-Palm Beach New Times. The men who he has sex with, though, get drunk at parties and tell everyone:

He said Wetherington told him and several other people at a party that he had sex with the politician in a hotel room in the Tampa-Sarasota area while he was working on the Harris campaign. He said Wetherington recounted that he spoke with Crist about a campaign matter and “one thing led to another and they had sex.”

That’s right, it’s a Katherine Harris campaign staffer. Her gay valet.

The whole sordid story is here, but the author takes way too many words to describe what is a simple story:

* People have speculated about Crist’s sexuality for many years.
* After being sorta ok on gay issues, he recently came out in favor of an anti-marriage amendment and a ban on gay adoption.
* 21-year-old former Harris field director got drunk at at least two parties, claimed to fuck Crist.
* Said kid added that felon (and former Harris staffer) Bruce Carlton Jordan is Crist’s long-term partner.
* Everyone denies everything.

From wonkette... woah.. sounds like more than just rumor and innuendo. None of us would have a problem with this, but I'm sure much of the republican base wouldn't be able to handle it. I wonder if there's been any closeted gay presidents or vice-presidents in history. Agnew always gave off a gay vibe to me. :)

Hey Raygun, it's funny that you mention Agnew. There were rumors at the time that Agnew's son was, in fact, gay. An enterprising reporter found him at the residence of a Baltimore hair salon owner with whom, it was alleged, James Agnew was co-habiting. Republicans, Republicans...

Wasn't William Rufus King the first "gay" vice president? Granted, we're talking early 19th century here and there's no sure way of confirming it, but the historical analysis seems to fall on the side of King's being homosexual. So Crist would be the second unofficially gay US vice president. hehe

Romney = rich.

Jindal = young and smart.

Crist = gay.

Romney's also dumb as a post. I think he's out.

If, indeed, Crist is gay (and I'm wholly depending on a previous poster), he's totally not viable.

Jindal would be a great choice if the Repug base would buy a guy on Indian descent. I'm not sure they wold.

Meanwhile, the whore said, I've blogged my first at http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/talk/2008/05/its-time-1.php if you want to read it.

Personally, I think McCain should consider Hillary as a running mate since she isn't doing so well with Democrats. And, in my view at least, she is indistinguishable from a Repugnican.

You forgot to mention that Romney would make sure that every college kid going to school in MA would go home and vote against him due to a hatred of Romney gained through sheer osmosis.

Yeah, I hope he picks Charlie Crist. For fun, go to Wonkette and search for "Charlie Crist" and "gay". Lots of fun. I don't know how to hyperlink on this site, but there's a lot of material there for your perusal.

This is kind of like holding auditions for first mate on the titanic aint it?

McCain picks will either be Joe Lieberman or Mike Huckabee.

Some good VP choices for Senator Obama:
Jim Webb
Chuck Hagel (especially if McCain picks Lieberman)
Kathleen Sebelius

Please, please, please, let him pick Romney. Please.

user-pic

Pretty please! Mittmentum shall return!

LOL My EXACT thoughts.

Any of these 3 picks I think are somewhat weak IMO.

Romney though - hack.

I want JINDAL. A repug will have to explain how those millions of tax dollars for katrina reconstruction were spent.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall:

"Saint John, let me kiss your ring."

"No, get out of my way you whore, I must be first to kiss your ring."

"You two are pikers. Watch me slobber all over the ring."

"My friends, we are gathered here today to see which one of you can win the title of best suck-up."

"That's me!"

"No, asshole, it's me."

"You are a messenger from God. You are the Joseph Smith of our time."

McCain "taking a rather hands on approach" conjurs images . . .

I believe the unspoken elephant in the room is that John McCain is an age vampire. He sucks lifeforce from those arround him. He steals a year or two from each person he meets. When no one else is around he pucks a day or two from his wife . . . That's why he had to trade the first one in for a younger, richer model. Of course, he metabolizes the stolen time at a fantastic rate . . . So he is always seeking flesh to drag a year or a decade from.

We all thought that Bush43 was extracting a moment public erotic man-love to mark McCain as his property through their lip locked, backside grab . . . But no McCain needed a lifeforce boost right there in public.

McCain has turned Lieberman into a thrall . . . Now he seeks younger flesh to feed his continuing existence. Romney brings cash to the table also.

Jokes aside, I dream of a McCain-Tancredo ticket. It could be billed as "Insane and Insaner".

Now that is a dream ticket, alright.

I see McCain meeting with Jindal as being sort of a political Rooney Rule (the NFL rule that stipulates you need to interview at least one minority for a coaching vacancy). I really don't think he'd pick him but he gets credit just for interviewing him. Jindal's like 36 and he'd not only make McCain older (if that's even possible) and he'd make Obama look older...neither of which is something they want.

*he'd not only make McCain look older (if that's even possible) but he'd make Obama look older

McCain adviser's work as lobbyist comes to light

By Matt Kelley, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — John McCain's top foreign policy adviser lobbied the Arizona senator's staff on behalf of the republic of Georgia while he was working for the campaign, public records show.

Randy Scheunemann, founder of Orion Strategies, represented the governments of Macedonia, Georgia and Taiwan between 2003 and March 1, according to the firm's filings with the Justice Department. In its latest semiannual report, the firm disclosed that Scheunemann had a phone conversation in November about Georgia with Richard Fontaine, an aide in McCain's Senate office.

Orion Strategies earned $540,000 from its foreign clients over the year ending on Dec. 1, reports show. Scheunemann also received $56,250 last year from March to July from McCain, according to campaign finance records.

The campaign consulting fees ended at a time when McCain was under financial pressure to cut costs, but Scheunemann remained the campaign's top foreign policy adviser. He represented McCain throughout last fall — including an appearance at a Republican Jewish Coalition event during the same week he lobbied McCain's Senate office.

I do wonder though if this is a bit of a red-herring. I am not sure why they would be so public about this - and why have them all over for the weekend at the same time?
I hope these are his candidates, but I am going to be skeptical.

They aren't his only three veep picks. The article also mentions Tim Pawlenty and (former OMB director and Ohio congressman) Rob Portman.

I'm also wondering if this isn't a meeting to tell these guys he's "kinda, sorta" thinking about them, but don't expect a call anytime soon. Really... Jindal, Crist, and Romney? I can't shake the feeling that he's really angling for a Mike Huckabee or a Joe Lieberman or even a Sarah Palin or Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Jindal is too young, Crist is most likely gay (or at least that's the perception and there's plenty of rumor and innuendo to fuel it), and Romney is a moron who McCain loathes. Would he really be seriously considering any of these three?

So Crist went and got engaged, did he? Well well well. That won't stop the stories, though -- they've been pretty thick ever since he first ran for governor in my state. He must really want that VP job if he went along with an engagement.
