« Obama Hits Back: Debate With McCain And Bush Over Foreign Policy Is One "I Will Win" | Home | Obama: I'll Debate McCain On Foreign Policy "Anywhere, Anytime" »

McCain Responds: Americans Have "Every Reason To Doubt" Whether Obama Can Keep Us Safe

Here's the response from McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds to Obama's speech hitting McCain and Bush on foreign policy today:

"It was remarkable to see Barack Obama's hysterical diatribe in response to a speech in which his name wasn't even mentioned. These are serious issues that deserve a serious debate, not the same tired partisan rants we heard today from Senator Obama.

"Senator Obama has pledged to unconditionally meet with Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- who pledges to wipe Israel off the map, denies the Holocaust, sponsors terrorists, arms America's enemies in Iraq and pursues nuclear weapons. What would Senator Obama talk about with such a man?

"It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don't have enemies. But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator Obama understands that, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment and determination to keep us safe."

You know, I wasn't aware that Obama had ever indicated that he thinks "we don't have enemies." I thought that Obama has been talking specifically about the Bush-McCain approach to dealing with our enemies, and labeling it an abject failure. But that's just me, I guess.

Separately, here's something that's noteworthy: The McCain camp appears to be reiterating -- in a slightly watered down version -- his claim yesterday on that blogger call that Obama is unfit to keep us safe.

In the current version, the McCain campaign is saying that "the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment and determination to keep us safe." That's their message, and they're gonna stick with it.

4,000 dead in Iraq. McCain voted for the Iraq war. Keeping us safe, eh?

Well we already know McBush doesn't have the judgement to keep us safe and out of destructive endless wars. He's proudly proven that.

New Sheriff in town

His press conference on now is even better. He's gutting them

user-pic

Yep. McCain just hot his first taste of the Obama Aikido.

This is a bit like when Hillary made her absurd Pakistan comments with a lot of nonsense claims about Obama. Obama just took her apart on it.

Hope McCain likes the taste of his own foot, as i suspect he'll be enjoying it quite often.

This is gonna be fun!

This Tucker Bounds guy needs to slapped. I heard no "diatribe" or "partisan rants" in what was a damn good foreign policy speech by Obama. How does this asshat plan to deal with the fact that Bush and McCain are two peas in a pod on foreign policy? By lying, smearing and spinning his fucking head off, apparently.

user-pic

But that's just me, I guess.

Well, you and every other rational person watching this debate.

These blatant mistatements will give the Obama campaign the opportunity to blast the BushMcCains as liars.

And, hopefully, bring up the "bearings" question again, so that we get to see replays of Joe Lieberman vouching for McCain's bearings....

I can't wait to see McCain lose it when an actual critical question is asked of him from the press. Greg? Want to do the honors? ;-)

Greg should be getting fewer allegations of bias now that he is clearly biased against McCain. (Of course that bias is entirely warrented and based solely on the facts, but it's a certain kind of bias all the same.)

Some Chicago Sun Times reporter was on CNN or maybe MSN saying that the problem of reconciliation in the Demo party wasn't at the top. Clinton and O'Bama are highly skilled politicians.

The real problem is bringing yourselves to kiss and make up with the Greg Sargents of the world

Eric Kleelfelds are oh so much easier to love

talk about the issues, not your petty grudges please.

Love the Irish spelling of O'Bama. I knew he was one of us!

McCain said:

"It was remarkable to see Barack Obama's hysterical diatribe in response to a speech in which his name wasn't even mentioned.

In his response to Bush's Knesset remarks Obama in fact did not accuse Bush of attacking him (meaning Obama) but of attacking the Democrats. This shows how pathetically out of synch McCain is with reality.

The first step toward Democratic reconciliation -- getting all of us back on the same team with Greg. Hear, hear!

Talking out of that new orifice, Sen McSame?

Dare we hope that McSame's entire campaign will be this moronic?

hope that should be fulfilled.

I like how their response today is more watered down. Perhaps Obama is even convincing McCain staffers that his approach is better?

It's just pee since they're pissing their pants out of fear :-)

user-pic

They're discovering that presidential elections are a wee bit different than spinning the press for their lobbying firms.

Please, God. Let them stay this clueless for just six more months.

And God, please let McCain defend Bush more---Bush the grackle that always gives.

Are the Republicans depserate or what?

They're starting with teh kitchen sink. By July, they'll have shot their full load and will ahve nothing less.

John McCain amkes Bob Dole seem like he was a youngster against Clinton.

I think this is what they should've saved for November. Why start this so early? It's a trump card played too soon.

The trump card I fear is another war. God forbid a tail wagging the dog scenario with Iran.

Why so early?

I honestly believe that they don't have anything else but their national security/fear platform.

Obama has, rightly, begun hitting McCain on how his presidency will essentially be a third Bush term. McCain's response here is the first ingredient of a six-month, seven-layer bean dip of BS.

"You're not safe" will be the mantra from McCain's camp because, simply, he has nothing else to offer.

McCain's communication team could have saved ink by just saying "But ... THE TERRORISTS!"

This response from the McCain camp wasn't finally about foreign policy. It's yet more guilt by association, which is all the Republicans are likely to have this year.

What would Senator Obama talk about with such a man?

Subtext: "such a man" = Ahmadinejad, Ayers, Wright, Rezko . . .

user-pic

And this:

"It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don't have enemies

is vaguely reminiscent of the Clinton campaign's rhetoric about "just words".

Please note: I'm not blaming the Clinton campaign for the McCain rhetoric. Merely pointing out that the McCain camp seems to be using a similar tactic to that of Clinton.

Here's hoping it's as effective.

"Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad -- who pledges to wipe Israel off the map, denies the Holocaust, sponsors terrorists, arms America's enemies in Iraq and pursues nuclear weapons. What would Senator Obama talk about with such a man?"

I imagine he'd talk to Ahmadinejad about the laundry list of shit in the preceding sentence.

Whatever talks they have, they will forward Iran's strategic position a lot less than have Bush's and McCain's policies.

It is so ridiculous....Imagine a similar scenario from 1945: Stalin has killed millions, he seeks to spread communism across the world, and he has nukes pointed at the West...What would FDR have to talk about with such a man??

The McBush response:

More War Years!
More War Years!
More War Years!
More War Years!

"It was remarkable to see Barack Obama's hysterical diatribe in response to a speech in which his name wasn't even mentioned. "

Translation:

"Aaaaah! Get him off me! Help! Get him off me!"

especially considering McCain DID name him (and Clinton).

Slightly off-topic, props to Hillary for coming to Obama's defense on this one. We will unite and defeat McCain in November.

user-pic

Or perhaps "hysterical diatribe" is a dog whistle for "uppity"?

McCain's the one with the legendary temper. Seems to be projecting a bit here. Obama's cool temperament is one of his calling cards.

I'm not sure it's code for "uppity" so much as "hysterical, loony left" in those circles.

Isn't the term "hysterical" often thrown around by misogynists to denigrate an argument presented by a passionate female? Maybe his language was an attempt to effeminate Obama and dems.

user-pic

Heh

It's one of my favorite things about him.

Precisely why I'm looking forward to the debates between McCain and Obama so much :)

It's because of you and you alone that I can no longer read TPM at work! They're telling me that I don't get paid to RTFLMAO! They also say that the hysterical laughter is disturbing everyone around me!

I'm going home now so that I can irritate my family with equally annoying behavior. Carry on!

This makes no sense to me politically. Can someone explain what McCain thinks he is going to get out of this line of attack?
http://thinmansblog.blogspot.com/

They're trying to use their old canard "liberal, weak, won't protect, supports gays, likes abortions, hates guns" in the hopes that it'll work in the general election.

In this same press release John McCain said...

"Hey um.... where am I? Who are you? Ummmmmm do you remember Lawrence Welk? Who has my mashed bananas? STRAIGHT TALK EXPRESS!!! I hate tax cuts. I love tax cuts. I will talk to hamas. I won't talk to hamas. Do you have my ribbon candy? I will run a clean campaign. NOT SAFE NOT SAFE! Ohhhhhh I poopied myself"

Wow it was so sad.

He has tons of tissues and hard candy falling out of his purse.

Obama/Olbermann '08!

user-pic

cheesh, Aubie, I thought you posted "Obama/Lieberman 08"

...then I noticed it said "Olbermann" which is actually a great idea, or maybe he will make Keith the White House spokesperson...

But that Obama/Lieberman error is still curdling in my brain, I need to slow down and read more carefully from now on...

Must have something to do with the Bush speech to the Knesset...

Obama needs to pummel this again and again. Seriously I cannot believe Mccain is this dense, the time and place to highlight Obama's experience was not a follow up to the past 8 years. This is really dumb tactically and strategically. On a tactical level this is a lucrative target for Mccain. Experience etc is a vulnerability but the weapon of choice? Is downright moronic. Using something that ties him directly to his biggest anchor? On a strategic level even worse. If the biggest argument Mccain may have gets overshadowed by the context of him being a reflection of the past 8 years is disasterous.

user-pic

You are delusional.

"Same tired partisan rants from Senator Obama"

Really?!?

As opposed to McCain's untired, bipartisan accusation that Obama is "unfit to serve."

Not to mention, Bush has no problems meeting with North Korea, part of the Bush-named "Axis of Evil", and Reagan met with Iran, and that McCain said in 2006 we need to recognize Hamas.

Liars all.

user-pic

Yes. And Reagan also met with Gorbachev, who I believe had a few nukes. Appeaser Ronnie? I don't think they'll like that reminder about the object of their man-crush.

Yes. And Reagan also met with Gorbachev, who I believe had a few nukes. Appeaser Ronnie?

Ah yes... Gorbachev, who, as I recall, was leader of the "Evil Empire".

Actually, Republicans can talk to terrorists, enemies, or anyone when it suits their purposes. But make sure you call it Realpolitik, and all discussions must of course be hard-nosed negotiations. Only Democrats are capitulating appeasers. Got it?

"hysterical diatribe"??

LOL

McCain's word of the day is "projection".

Nice try changing the subject from his Hamas flipflop to Ahmadinejad.

Of COURSE the McCain campaign is sticking with the message that Obama can't keep America safe. It's the alpha and omega of their campaign stragegy. They have nothing else.

All of McCain's campaign messages will be forward-looking. The good things McCain will do; the bad things Obama would do; the necessary things Obama wouldn't be capable of doing. McCain can't run on the past because the past (i.e., the Bush legacy) is absolutely devastating to him. He's going to run on the future, just like Obama.

National security is the issue that lost the last two elections.

Looks like three in a row.

Nice work.

Gulp, gulp, gulp, drink that kool aid.

Hey, that's a good one! Can someone please explain this brand new Kool-Aid thing to me? Heh.

Actually gotalife, if you recall, Bush in 2000 actually ran on an isolationist policy. He though Clinton foreign policy of engaging threats to our democracy was wrong, and that we "should not be the world's police force."

Of course, then came 9/11 after repeated warnings and no action, and suddenly we had to go to Iraq to capture Osama bin Laden (explain THAT to me again).

2004 sucked, because Kerry did not make a clear difference between himself as Bush. "I voted for it before voted against it" was not nearly as bad as "Knowing what I know now, I'd still vote for it."

Kerry was an idiot. Hillary could have won in 2004 if she had ran. Edwards could have won if he was top-ticket.

And Obama is in a MUCH better position than Kerry:

He was against the war from the beginning, and has no senate vote he has to defend. Popularity for the war has gone way down since 2004, so an anti-war candidate is viable. And, McCain, with all his flip-flops and "100 years" or "over by 2013" is going to lose to the much simpler phrase:

"End the War vs Unending War: the choice is yours"

I've made my choice, gotalife. Make yours. Either get on board with Obama or start campaigning for McCain.

The real ridiculousness of this is the apparent fantasy-land belief that the Republicans would not have pulled the Fear Card on Clinton and attempted to paint her as a weak, traitorous b***h.

If they pulled it on a decorated war hero like John Kerry (and let's not forget Max Cleland) then you better believe Hillary would have faced the same thing.

user-pic

POint of clarity though... Obama is not "anti-war" per se... he is anti-dumb wars, anti-wars of choice. He will be as aggressive and vigorous using military force as is APPROPRIATE in actually DEFENDING America as would any President or leader of nation to protect its people and nation from harm and that does sometimes require use of force, as a last resort.

But that is why Iraq is such a disaster. It does nothing to protect America and actually harms America, harms many American directly. Those wounded, killed while serving tours of duty there, the families and those who suffer in anguish, Americas standing in the world, the money being flushed down the toilet along with the lives and well-being of thousands of our people, the millions of lives lost of destroyed in Iraq... how it validates the arguments of extremists seeking to attack the west and America, the list goes on and on.

Exactly Gotalife - they are drinking the crap flavored BS coolaid of the dems and Mcsame.

I gotta say - you were swallowing down those wine coolers pretty heavy duty at Fogu's last night though. If not for Matthew Weaver and Present - you would have made a fool or yourself.

Back to topic though - Seriously - what a pathetic speech on National Security. If there's one thing I think we'd both agree on - it's that we should just simply give up - or "appease" if you will - to McSame (shaem!) for 08 - then HRC in 012 (2012!) and get this right. It's time to think partical for a change!

Goal!

Every day I love you just a little bit more.

user-pic

Actually, 2000 had nothing to do with foreign policy. The GOPers ran on "compassionate conservatism," and restoring "dignity" to the White House after the horrible peace and prosperity of the Clinton years.

2002 and 2004? Sure. The public was scared shitless and the GOPers exploited it.

2006 and 2008? You see the difference right?

gotalife, a typically pithy comment.

Oh, thorry, I have a thpeech impediment.

Here's a little glimpse at what the right wing attack line would be if Hillary wins the nomination.

I don't know about you, but I'll take McCain's ridiculous ad hominems and Obama's sitting on a board with a never-convicted 70s radical, and his crazy pastor over the Riadys, Jorge Cabrera, Johnny Chung, Ng Lapseng and the never ending stories of how she abused the military officer corps that served at the White House.

It's hard not to laugh when I hear claims that Hillary has been "vetted".

Memo to McSame: When you're in a hole, quit digging. On second thought, keep digging, sir! I believe I see gold down there!

user-pic

I STILL want to see the debate. It'll be FUNNY!

For some reason this makes me remember that there was a fairly high-up staffer in McCain's campaign who had said he would have to quit if it came down to McCain and Obama, because he wouldn't be part of going negative on Obama. Can't recall his name. Does anyone know his status?

I actually expected more of McCain than terms like "hysterical diatribes" and complaints of "tired, partisan rants" ... immediately before indulging in one. Instead of saying there needs to be a debate, why doesn't he start actually debating some of the point Obama raised?

But ... at least it IS on an important issue.

Mark McKinnon: http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/02/mccain-adviser.html

His mother ran for governor of Texas in the last election, brother Scott was the press secretary who received all that false information, and I believe another brother serves/served in the Bush Administraion (FDA/Health?).

McClellan, don't you mean?

Scott McClellan's mother is currently known as Carole Keeton Strayhorn, I think; she changes last names the way Hillary changes hairstyles, but has never been married to a McKinnon - anyway she's never appeared under that name on a ballot. So Mark McKinnon isn't Scott McClellan's brother. As far as I know. ;-)

For the record, Mark McKinnon is still with McCain.

Listening to Obama's response:

"Clear choice in November: Fighting a war without end, or ending this war and bringing our troops home."

I like the way he phrased that. War without end vs Ending the War.

Can't get much clearer than that.

I'll say this again, Senator Clinton was a better Republican in her campaigning than the Republicans are showing themselves to be.

This response is a joke.

I agree and I think that you are actually complementing HRC. If you are going to use Repub tactics - at least don't be a baffoon about it. HRC at least pulled it off with some panache.

Nice to see confirmation that the same old tired DLC-style hackery is where Gotnolife is coming from. Hillary herself has a lot more of a clue than Gotnolife does.

That's because gotnolife is not even an HRC supporter. Just a Republican troll.

"What would Senator Obama talk about with such a man?"

Hmmmm... in the right hands, this inconspicuous length of rhetorical rope could be fashioned into a nice little noose.

Greg, if there's a video, would you post it just for more laughs?

The more we hear from McCain and Bush, the easier it becomes to unify the Democratic party in November.

This is an incredibly juvenile statement from the McCain Rest Home. It sounds like it was written by someone in their 20s who wanted to sound old and patronizing(with apologies to 20 somethings here).

Barack Obama's hysterical diatribe
As Keith Olberman would say:

"Old man yells at cloud!

Shorter McCain: "Hey you kids get off my yard!"

user-pic

LOL!!!!!

Another of my faves, though tissues and hard candy are hard to beat.

Funny story: we "test marketed" some guerilla campaign materials during the primaries. We made a passing-glance duplicate of a McCain sign, and shifted his "star bar" beneath his name so that a slogan would appear underneath.

In the slogan space, we had a mix: "War More Years," "Get Off My Lawn," and "You Meddling Kids."

Hung them in the afternoon ahead of a McCain gathering on lightposts, newspaper vending machines, etc. along the main routes leading in to where the gathering was taking place.

They were, of course, pulled down in a lot of instances. But in one case, a McCain supporter had pulled the "War More Years" version down and was using it as a rally sign, lol :)

We're shooting to make them available as PDF downloads sometime before the general...

user-pic

So which was most effective?

The get a brain you moran crew grabbing it and using it as some pro-McCain sign, or were others getting a more effective reaction?

Actually, I had been concerned early on that the Off My Lawn and Meddling Kids varietals would come off as ageist, so I was really pleased to see some older folks stopping and laughing at them.

The possibilities are endless, really - between that Moran grabbing one for use and a fair number of folks passing by without much notice, I'd say they passed as "official" enough, which was the point of the test.

...like Erin Moran? From Happy Days?

user-pic

Coverage on the TeeVee tonight: Obama's speech, and then a written response from McCain. Knowing the media, they'll highlight the "hysterical" snippet.

When that is contrasted with Obama's actual speech, the McCain campaign is going to look a little "hysterical".

The BushMcCain campaign seems a little out of touch.

McBush wants four more years of the last eight. He's going against even Colin Powell and Robert Gates. Instead, McBush thinks he can win this thing by hitching his wagon to Mr 28% and stupid talk about 100 years in Iraq.

Good luck with that in Nov.

Oh yeah, then there's this:

"They're the government; sooner or later we are going to have to deal with them, one way or another, and I understand why this administration and previous administrations had such antipathy towards Hamas because of their dedication to violence and the things that they not only espouse but practice, so . . . but it's a new reality in the Middle East. I think the lesson is people want security and a decent life and decent future, that they want democracy. Fatah was not giving them that."

Even McBush is willing to deal with Hamas. At least before he flip-flopped and decided to be Mr. 28%'s guard dog.

Beautiful timing McBush!!

Thursday turns into Friday and we will dominate through the Sunday talk show

Smooth move exLax

Well, we should have expected this. Everyone just assumed McCain would be just as, if not more formidable than Clinton. This is not the case.

McCain is a weak, weak candidate.

McCain is all the repubs were left with after the other 47 candidates proved to be totally non-viable outside of their tiny geographic niches. He is an incredibly weak candidate but got where he is because of name recognition and an association with the word *maverick*

As I posted somewhere yesterday, I really believe that --- in this particular election cycle and against this particular Republican candidate --- a stuttering nympho crackhead could win, as long as she was wearing a donkey lapel pin.

Luckily, we, instead, have the best Democratic presidential candidate of my lifetime.

Game.

Set.

Match.

McCain is a dottering old man who will, at some point in the campaign, soil himself beyond anything a wetwipe can fix.

God, he's already pinching his asscheeks together ... and it's only MAY!

-

Obama/Olbermann '08!

Huh...Obama engaging in a "hysterical diatribe"? That's about as likely as the Iraq war suddenly ending with no more American military deaths and the Iraqi government getting hold of a boatload of magic democracy pills.

No wait, it's a lot less likely.

As someone that grew up in UK I became itimately familiar with public transport. It seemed at every busy bus stop in my home city of Liverpool there was always some under the breath grumbling old man. We all smiled at him in sympathy and passed by...

Something to think about...

McCain's past stance -- that he would conduct diplomacy with these group that BushCo refuses to communicate with -- was by just about all accounts, the rational one. Everyone knows that.

Now he's trying to run away from this stance.

Let him go. Let him run.

And when he's so far gone that he can no longer return to his previous position, cut him off from it completely.

user-pic

Yep - that is their stance.

They are completely bankrupt - no ideas, no money, nothing good they can point to and say: See? We did this.

Except the tax cuts and they have very limited appeal at this point.

user-pic

McShame!

Pulling the same old politics. Trying to brand the Dem as angry and crazy.

Same tired old attack! Recycled. McBushwacker!

McShame!

Bush is now to the Dem party what Hillary is to the Rep party. If Bush keeps this up, he in effect will cause the unifying of the Dem party all by himself and will energize the base even more. That will translate into ridiculous turnout at the polls.

If i was McCain, i would be telling GW to shut the hell up.

user-pic

franklyn, that's why I wasn't too worried.

It's been my experience in the last couple of years that no matter what is winding someone up, you can reliably get them to veer right off that and right onto Bush in about 45 seconds.

Things are coming together nicely. McCain is starting to look like Bob Dole.

Starting to?

All he needs to do is fall off a podium.

(OK, sorry, that was bad taste, but I can't help it)

user-pic

Funny bumper sticker I saw back in 96. Someone got a hold of an actual "Dole '96" and razor-bladed it to read "Dole is 96". Ranked right up there with "Dole for Pineapple" ones that cycle.

Someone needs to ask McCain:

"So, what ARE you going to do about Iran, besides ignore them?"

Damned good question!

So far, all he has done is help Iran.

He's already answered that question.

Musically.

Poorly, but musically.

Remember?

"Bomb, bomb, bomb ... bomb, bomb Iran!"

Ride 'em, senile Cowboy!

-

Obama/Olbermann '08!

By George I think he's go it!Obama Gets It

5 Wars - 5 Defeats (Iraq, Lebanon, Somalia, Terror, Afghanistan)

The greatest contributor to the resurgence of Iran's power in the middle east has been the policy of John McCain and George Bush Barack Obama

It's John Brown-Nose McCain, sweeties. Now do we all understand why Obama will need Webb for Veep?

And the "Flip-Flop Express" just keeps rolling off its tracks...

user-pic

And wasn't it Bush and the present Sec. of State who blew off all kinds of evidence and warnings re. al Queda in the summer of '01. And who has his nose up Bush's ass to the max? McBrownNose.

Whoa-- are you watching the Obama presser now? he's being even more bad-ass and effective than he was during the town hall earlier. He knows his shit on foreign policy, and he wants everyone else to know he knows his shit. He--not McCain--will make this issue central to the campaign. And he'll win.

Advice to Obama staff: hold off on using your best ammunition until Oct. and Nov. Use it now and it simply won't register by then. Blast McBrownNose out of the water during the third week of October.

No. You have to nip this crap in the bud right now, before the corporate media starts referring to it as fact.

John, that's your move?

Sounds a little bit too much like the Dukakis/Gore/Kerry "people won't possibly believe what he's saying, so I'll just ignore it" strategy that failed so massively in 1988, 2000, and 2004.

The press conference right now by Obama is brilliant. He is laying out in a mature, commanding and knowledgeable way the difference between his approach and Bush/McCain's. He is describing what happened historically and how the Bush/McCain policy is the aberration from history, not the norm. He has specifically pointed out Bush/McCain's hypocrisy. He has told them to bring it on, anywhere, anytime.

It IS a tour de force.

More important, he is talking to the American people as adults while Bush and McCain are using invective, innuendo, and rhetorical tripe. He is calling them out on it, and thus linking thsi sometimes esoteric and complex debate on foreign policy to his overarching theme, that we need a new politics. A huge part of that politics is to tell the people the truth and stop trying to manipulate them with fear, division, etc...

My guess is that this is going to go like the gas tax. The politics may seem appealing to Bush/McCain, but the people can tell the difference between name-calling and what they all now has been a massive failure of policy.

user-pic

...and Kruschev promised to bury us (i.e. America and the West)... we still had open lines of communication and diplomacy even though we were pitched in a half century armed stand-off when the stakes were the very survival of the human race... and we came to the brink a few years later after the "we will bury you" promise during the Cuban Missile Crisis. To bad the Bush administration and the GOP clowns doesn't even know what the fuck that was. Maybe these clowns like Perino, McSame, Kevin James and crew can all go back and retake a remedial world history class and grab a fucking clue.

As tweety realized when faced with the utter vapidity of these assclowns over foreign policy "You are BS’ing me… You don’t know what you’re talking about.".

McCain says it's bad to talk to Iran, an actual state, but it's cool to negotiate with Hamas, a terrorist organization that neither Hillary nor Obama has agreed to talk to. Obama needs to start hammering him over this, repeatedly. Psych him out by going to his right over negotiating with terrorists. "John McCain wants to negotiate with terrorists. I don't."

"hysterical diatribe" ??

At what point, in Barack's speech was ANY
of it...'a diatribe' and/or 'hysterical' ?

McCain spokesperson Tucker Bounds appears
to be have 'caught' his boss's dementia.

This going to be pretty interesting given that there's a Sky News video in which former State Dept. spokesman James Rubin is interviewing McCain who said, in 2006, that "we" ought to talk to Hamas since it now running the government.

Yeah, Dr. O was usual "hysterical" self.

If you notice the video of Obama, he gives examples after examples of what the Bush administration has accomplished, and how McCain supports it.

This should be interesting....

Obama made a mistake saying that he would meet with Ahmadinejad, not that such meetings would be mistaken under any and all circumstances, but because it gave McCain an easy line of attack. Obama will have to play defense and explain that one in specific terms.

I think McCain's "hysterical diatribe" remark may be a sign of age-related mental dysfunction. For a moment he forgot he was speaking of Obama and not Hillary.

user-pic

100% wrong. McCain stepped in it because they are trying there same failed fear-mongering horse-shit and Obama is now cramming it back on their throat. You run AT your opponents perceived strength and turn it against them. This also has the beauty of Obama being 100% correct on the merits and McCain being 100% wrong on them.

Stop being afraid.

Gridlock!

Right, if you think Aikido is an ineffective form of defense then I would see why you have been afraid.

McCain is coming at Obama with his biggest weapon--his supposed experienced and toughness in foreign affairs--and revealing that in fact he has used that experience to practice politics as usual and support policies that the vast majority of Americans can see readily as failures.

Mr. McCain is Iran more of a threat to the world's security today than it was 8 years ago?
Mr. McCain is Hezbollah stronger or weaker than they were 8 years ago?
Mr. McCain why is Al Qaeda stronger today than at any time since 9-11?
Mr. McCain i sISreal closer or further form peace today than 8 years ago?

And on and on...

user-pic

"Hysterical diatribe?" - You mean Obama called McCain a cunt?

That's a typical response from a person with a dementia. First, the ability to distinguish concepts starts to go, e.g., confusing Sunni and Shia. Next, is the capacity to accurately perceive affect, which is what we are observing in this instance, with this bizarre "hysterical diatribe" response.

These republicans are freaking out. They don't know what to do about Senator Obama after their race baiting failed in LA, NC MS. Now they seem pathetic and gasping at air.

McCain is going to be shouting "Out of ammo!" and turning his hearing aid off before they even have a debate.

I hope Bush attacks Obama every day for the next 5 months.

user-pic

You mean McSame will go all Admiral Stockdale on us? (wry grin)

Making fun of Stockdale's hearing loss, as easy as it seems is in rather poor taste. Please read the wiki article.

Similarly, it is not necessary to mock McCain for infirmities he does not have. He has plenty of flaws that he himself will reveal.

I was making fun of Stockdale's hearing loss? I believe I was making fun of the fact that he turned his hearing aid off during a televised debate. Sorry to ruin your fit of moral indignation.

I blogged about this yesterday. I felt that the initial response by the Dems was a bit over the top (they threw a fit), but not hysterical.

You'll notice that the rest of the Dems are shutting up now and letting Obama do the talking. His statement today was not hysterical. It was measured and precise. Once he is the nominee the rest of the party will leave the responses to him, and him only.

"hysterical diatribe"

Pardon me, you never will see "hysterical diatribe" coming from someone who is as cool, and laid back as Obama is, but you can't say the same about McCain's own "hysterical diatribe". and he's had many -- Remember those two words, because we Dems are going to need to turn it around and use it right back on old McCain.

Everyone knows McCain has a serious temper problem, in fact, I say it shows he unfit to be Commander and Chief. McCain has an anger management problem and we are going to see if one of these debates.

Obama is going whip McCains ass. That boy has talent.

It's funny, because I really don't feel safe with Bush at all. Hitting a hornets nest with a baseball bat doesn't kill the hornets.

Honestly, I feel better protected when I'm in China.

Well, it's not really funny, but more of a sad irony. Bush is even a pathetic excuse for a strong man.

That press conference was impressive. Obama was on point like never before. He was forceful, clear, and dare I say, presidential. Add this to Bush's reemergence in the campaign and the loss in Mississippi, and it's clear this was a horrible week for the GOP.

Americans Have "Every Reason To Doubt" Whether McCain Can Keep Us Safe

It was remarkable to see John McCain's appaling response to a speech in which the president of the united states attacked a fellow American politician from the safety of foreign soil. These are serious issues that deserve a serious debate, not the same tired partisan rants we heard today from George Bush and John McCain. Senator McCain has pledged to run a civil campaign based on issues, while at the same time smearing Senator Obama through guilt-by-association tactics that the American people are tired of, and quite frankly deserve better. The stakes are too high.

John McCain and George Bush are afraid to talk to our enemies. John McCain, like George Bush, thinks the only solution to the world's problems is military force, to shoot first and ask questions later. This was the same approach that got us into the disasterous Iraq war which has ravaged our economy, cost the lives of over 4000 American sons and daughters, and countless millions of Iraqis, strengthened Iran's standing in the region, and yes-has aided and strengthened Al Qaeda by serving as a distraction from the war on terror.

It would be a wonderful thing if we lived in a world where we don't have enemies. But that is not the world we live in, and until Senator McCain understands that America's power comes not only from military force, but also through the force of our ideals and our values, the American people have every reason to doubt whether he has the strength, judgment and determination to keep us safe."

"Hysterical diatribe"?

How about a "historical dialog" that McSenile is having with himself. 2 years ago: dialog good. Now: dialog bad.

user-pic

At his presser, Obama cited Kennedy-Khrushchev and Nixon-Mao meetings as precedent. I wonder if the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group are also being remembered now, particularly this on p. 36 (catch the last 2 words here):

"Dealing with Iran and Syria is controversial. Nevertheless, it is our view that in diplomacy, a
nation can and should engage its adversaries and enemies to try to resolve conflicts and
differences consistent with its own interests. Accordingly, the Support Group should actively
engage Iran and Syria in its diplomatic dialogue, without preconditions."

Is Bush going to call ISG Chairman James Baker soft on terrorism for this report? Is McCain?

This follow-up on the next page is also worth noting:

"However, the United States should also consider incentives to try to engage them constructively, much as it did successfully with Libya."

Is Bush going to call himself soft on terrorism for having talked with Qaddafi?

All I know is that, with enough votes in November he can DAMN SURE keep us safe from YOU, John McCain!

Obama/Olbermann '08!

Can you imagine had McLame made the "hysterical" comments in reference to Clinton? I shudder to think of the black lash. Reckon I might even gouge out my eyes and rupture my own eardrums to escape seeing/hearing the uproar.

This isn't meant as quip at Hillary supporters (they'd be right to be pissed), just an observation I posted because it's Friday afternoon and I'm trying to kill that final hour at work...

Maybe McCain can get a viagara commercial outta this deal like Bob Dole.

"I accused Barack Obama of being a limp dick. It didn't work and he's now the President... but trust me that I know limp dicks! Viagara. Change Old men Deserve!"

Is it just me or does McCain sound absolutely bat-shit insane? I know I am biased and I know that I have a distinctly liberal outlook but I just don't get it. How can anyone really take McCain seriously.
At least with the gas-tax pander I could see how some people might think that might be a decent idea if you weren't too involved in the news.

This- I am at a loss to figure the other side. Of course I still don't have the faintest clue how this country could have possibly re-elected GW so I am sure I am not seeing something.

This just in: Old man yells at clouds. More at 11.

Oh and another thing, the use of "hysterical diatribe" is classic Karl Rove "projectionism".

The Repug Party KNOWS that McCain has an anger management problem - so the try and paint Obama with McCain's weaknesses. Obama NEEDS to throw this Rovism ball back into McCains court.

This is why the Obama must throw the words back at McCain - it's McCain who is the angry canidate, so the Dems need to find a way to label him with his own words.

This is why Obama should pick Edwards for his VP, because that Edwards is a VERY skilled lawyer, he never bats an eye. Edwards could show Obama those necessary courtroom skills that I've seen Edwards exhibit. They would make a great young dynamic duel - and that is absolutely what we need. You have to play tennis - hardball style, you've got to put those Karl Rove grenades right back in McCain court - let up blow up on McCain. Obama NEEDS Edwards, he needs a good lawyer that knows how to do it. And Edwards knows how to do it.

Not that I'm disagreeing with the essence of your argument, but I felt I should point out that Obama is in fact a lawyer as well. A very promising one at that, who chose to move directly into public service. I think he's proven that he is also a pretty cool customer throughout this never ending nomination process. I do agree that Edwards could make a very effective VP though.

You are thinking of Scott McClellan.

McKinnon: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Mark_McKinnon

Mark McClellan is a fairly impressive guy. He was head of FDA and CMS and on the CEA, and a professor at Stanford. Scott on the other hand is a complete douchebag and a hack.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_McClellan

It's really quite simple, McCain is a:

Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite Liar and Hypocrite

I simply can NOT wait for an actual presidential debate. One of those Abe Lincoln style debates that Senator Clinton wanted to do with Senator Obama would be heavenly!

one db

"Hysterical diatribe"? Well, it would seem that the party of Lincoln has offered up yet another Presidential candidate who is English language challanged. His remarks clearly show that he knows not, and probably cares less about, the meanings of the two terms. No more than Shrub knows the meaning of the term appeasement, but hey, it's a 'big word' so why not give it a try.

hysterical diatribe

hysterical: marked by excessive or uncontrollable emotion

diatribe: fulmination. a thunderous verbal attack

Funny, I must have missed the speech Grampy McCain saw. Either that, or Grampy McCain is getting a little over-sensitive in his old age.

I am laughing hysterically over bvd's one word diatribe.

user-pic

Tucker Bounds really needs to consult a dictionary before using SAT words like "hysterical" and "diatribe." Think we could take up a collection to buy him one?

Another ponderosacisously uberglomficated honkitudinous bablificated response from McCain!

I just realized that you can rearrange the letters in "gotalife" to spell "e-flog it".

Missing the a but I guess he already flogged his a off.

Also, "I got flea" "ego flat I" "Elf tag, Oi!" "lie to fag"

John McCain calls this hysterical diatribe?
What hysterical diatribe.

user-pic

Hello? I must have missed something. What diatribe? I thought Obama sounded strong on diplomacy and strong on protecting the world from terrorists.

The way to peace is through words, not weapons. A president who cannot command the language cannot command the road to peace.

This is just an asinine quote. The idea of diplomacy is that you talk to your enemies. If we only talked to our friends, than we would never make peace. Whether or not talking to Iran will work is an open question. However, instead of proposing a solution -- its unclear not talking them or continuing on this path will cause them to disarm or stop threatening Israel -- McCain just makes any empty rhetorical comment that adds no value to the discussion.

Furthermore, all these comments about the United States protecting Israel by force belittles Israel's own power to protect itself. While the United States should continue to stand by and support Israel, instead of making empty rhetorical comments threatening Iran, something Israel avoids doing, we should work on actual solutions to remove the threat of Iran.

For argument’s sake; let’s just pretend the Decider was telling the truth and really wasn’t referring to Obama in his speech. Even if this were true, Obama is still right to go after Bush and McCain on this. Bush’s speech was an attack on ALL Democrats. The President is also the titular head of his/her party. As such, it is his or her responsibility to stand up for the party when it’s sullied by a couple of douches like Bush and McCain. If Obama spun it a bit for personal political gain, so what? That’s just politics. I’m just happy that the Democrats have grown a pair - or three if you’re Hillary – and are finally fighting back! The Republicans’ arguments have always been paper thin, but for far too long, Democrats couldn’t fight their way out of a wet paper bag, so they manage to foist this crap on the people. That’s all over now – so long as we don’t let our emotions get the best of us and continue to attack each other.

Some people are just too old, too tired and too attached to disastrous failed policies to keep America safe, and in fact are pretty much guaranteed to keep her in decline as best they can.

Only a hysterical person would see this attack on any particular candidate. No names are mentioned.

McCain (thank you New York magazine) can't speak a single word if the teleprompter isn't working. Not one word! Silence for 4 full minutes in front of a crowd. Everything he sputters is written by someone else. So how is a debate going to happen? against the brilliance of Barack Obama?
Left to his own devices, McCain can't tell the difference between the two main factions in Iraq for a War he so feverishly supports.
The truth is that John McCain is a weak candidate by any standards--another empty suit like Bush and Fred Thompson.
John McCain isn't going anywhere in this election but home to Cottonwood & his Beer Queen.--another paragon of virtue. How Noble of Cindy McCain to announce her Drug Addiction to the world-- while not mentioning that the drug (Vicodin) to which she became addicted was STOLEN by her from the Poor. So we have her two horribles--addiction and Theft--This, the First Lady? I think not.

I agree with much of the political commentary offered on this thread, but I think another dynamic of this can of worms needs to be explored here. Many of us have observed something basically sinister about our foreign policy of the last seven years, especially its prideful violence, blatant disregard for human rights, absolute secrecy, abuse of executive power, and obvious profit motive. I use the word "sinister" because many of these Bush, Inc. people frame their actions as being more important than our constitutional system of checks and balances.

Watching the events of the past few days from this perspective, I don't get the sense that Bush/McCain/etc. are merely using Rovian political plays to attempt to weaken Obama. I sense something much more profound: I think Obama is now confronting the un-democratic neo-con machine that has essentially run this country like a junta for the past seven years.

I agree that McCain 08 is as weak a candidate as Dole 96, but does anyone else get the feeling that this election isn't so much Obama vs. McCain as it is a fight for the renewal of US-style representative democracy versus the now entrenched neo-con brand of creeping fascism? I don't mean to be alarmist, but that's a very different game from the political banter we progressives are enjoying in this anti-Republican year of elections. Just a thought.

If McCain's campaign is willing to call Obama "hysterical" without even a solid quote to hang it on, I sense the race to the gutter is on. Seriously it's an offensive word to use for a guy responding to an unprecedented lowball.

That and calling it a "rant" and a "diatribe" is just so ridiculous.

I didn't hear any such thing in that speech. McCain has abandoned whatever "civility" he promised in this campaign, I am just hoping his Base (the MSM) wakes the &*(% up and stops fawning all over him.

This may have been mentioned, but McCain's repeated use of the phrase "stinking corpse" doesn't strike me as something that will rally people behind his words. He's clearly trying to use the ol' simple-attack-ad-infinitum ploy, but it's too awkward and abstract a metaphor. And it's not something easily repeatable in casual conversation, as in "Obama wants to appease people who think Israel is a stinking corpse." I hope he continues to use it.

As each month goes by, Obama's political skills continue to grow and sharpen. It's been great to watch. He used to be slow to respond to attacks. Now he is fast, sharp and on target. It is wonderful to finally see and hear a Democrat who owns a backbone and won't back down to the Republican attack machine.

St. John the Apostate saying Obama's comments were a "hysterical diatribe?" The same guy who called his wife a c*nt? That's frickin hilarious. I love it.

Edwards is a superb VP candidate, but the fact that he has already been on a losing ticket is a major weakness. I think it rules him out on the level of raw politics, sadly.

But what about AG? Restoring the rule of law in America could well be the most important job of all for the next administration. The use of agencies created to protect Americans to instead abuse Americans (Justice, EPA, FEMA, OMB... the list of exceptions would be shorter.) I'm talking myself into really liking this idea.

Appeasement: perhaps Madame Speaker should re-examine the dereliction of duty, failure to protect the country by George Bush during the summer previous to the attack on 9/11. Many would consider this dereliction impeachable.

Let's face it, gang: Bush's dereliction of duty in the months leading up to 9/11 was tantamount to appeasement. Nancy Pelosi should re-examine the impeachment question.

Stupid, arrogant dereliction of duty.

The McCain camp can' be too happy in the wake of Obama's response. The whole dustup serves to tie McBrownNose closer to Bush, nixes his recent efforts to distance himself from the two legged Disaster In Chief.

"It is so ridiculous....Imagine a similar scenario from 1945: Stalin has killed millions, he seeks to spread communism across the world, and he has nukes pointed at the West...What would FDR have to talk about with such a man"??

Great point! Truman had several politicians, to include General Patton making this very point...that American needed to attack Russia while the iron was hot. Later during the Korean war General McArthur argued that America should escalate the war and attack China.

Thank god Truman had the "GOOD JUDGEMENT" to see these men for what they were...WAR MONGERERS" and they were immediately dimissed and quickly sent out to pasture.

I think Edwards would make a great AG. However, I would like see him nominated to the SC since several slots may be available.

What better way to add balance to a right leaning court, than having a justice on the court who is a strong supporter of the working man and poor.

A malpractice attorney on the SCOTUS? I dunno.

Protecting the country also means protecting the constitution and the treasury. The Republicans have destroyed the Bill of Rights and have raided the treasury. This country has been under attack by McCain's very own party, and he has done nothing to protect the institutions (I am aware the Treasury is not one of the founded institutions) that are the foundation of the country. McCain should be the last person to speak about being weak on protecting this nation. He has been complicit to the destruction of it so far.

In a message that sounds like it could have been crafted by Karl Rove, McCain lashes out but finds no target. Instead he invites a comparison on the issue of judgement. Now how dumb is that, given McCain's background. McCain literally invites people to consider his judgement regarding his shameful treatment of his first wife. Or his role in the Keating 5 scandal. Then his vote to go to war in Iraq shows his lack of judgement on matters of war and peace. But that is o.k., McCain can keep throwing those stones from his glass house.

McCain utter ass-wipe....more of the same tired Bush/Clinton diarrhea....uh, yeah-huh.

I say let the Republicans bring it on. Remember, McCain is inextricably ties to the Bush regime and that is not good news for him. Bush's approval rating is so low that McCain will never benefit from sucking it up to Bush. Further, Obama can compare McCain's own words now to his own words before he got the Bush religion. Sad to say, there is no longer ANY Straight Talk Express in the McCain Camp. Unfortunately he is so full of the Bush BS that he simply cannot make any point without infuriating all but the most devoted Bushies and some of them are even bolting their party. Sorry, but even the Slick Morris, errr Dick Morris cannot help McCain now.
