McCain Camp Accuses Obama Of Hitting McCain On Age
With the Obama and McCain camps just about ready to proceed to the general election campaign, the insults are already flying fast between them. The latest: McCain aide Mark Salter says Obama was unfairly attacking McCain's age in his rebuttal to McCain's association of Obama with Hamas.
Appearing on CNN earlier, Obama said that McCain was "losing his bearings" by making the Hamas comments, which Salter called "a not particularly clever way of raising John McCain's age as an issue."
"It is important to focus on what Senator Obama is attempting to do here," said Salter. "He is trying desperately to delegitimize the discussion of issues that raise legitimate questions about his judgment and preparedness to be President of the United States."

Thanks for saying it out in the open, Salter! Thx for reminding voters that McCain is older than Yoda.

The whole thing was just a big misunderstanding. It turns out McCain thought Obama said that he was losing his ball bearings. Old people are like that--they hear things wrong sometimes.

Hilarious.
Isn't Salter trying to use OBAMA's age against him in response, with the code word "preparedness" filling in for age?
His response doesn't even make any sense, since whatever Hamas says has absolutely no bearing on Obama's "judgment and preparedness."
Obama's response was actually pretty charitable to McCain. He could have said that McCain is a dishonorable hack for trying to use such abominable but typical GOP tactics and a liar for saying something he obviously doesn't really believe.
John Stewart gave it to McCain on the Daily Show for embarrassing himself like that. Can't say you'll take the high road and then immediately set off down the lowest road possible.

Instead of responding to the substance of the criticism Obama raised, McCain's campaign goes right into parsing the way he responded, and distracting us with this "he brought up McCain's age, how dare he?" bullshit.
Fact is, McCain's statements on Obama being endorsed by Hamas is offensive, and absurd, the implication being that Obama must be soft on terrorism. It is clear the kind of campaign McCain is, and will be, running this Summer. Fortunately, Obama should be used to this by now, he has been fending off the same kind of shit from Hillary for months.

Now is there a chance that we can get along and, you know, actually try to get Democrats (House, Senate and White House) elected this year?
We can settle our differences in the remaining Primaries and whatever other arena the candidates choose, but let's not EVER side with the GOP against one another. m'Kay?

What I'm not understanding is that the McCain camp is trying to say the Hamas issue is real (McCain himself couldn't say it with a straight face on the Daily Show last night) but when everyone and their brother is making age jokes (including McCain himself), his camp gets offended because of some wording that *may* imply age???

In the general election, Obama is not going to need to point out McCain's age. McCain does it every day. He hardly seems to know where he is. He is barely coherent sometimes. He will fall off the stage. He needs to be more carefully managed than Ronald Raygun ever did and we all know that he was in the beginning stages Alzheimer's Disease when he was president. At this point in our history, we cannot afford another doddering fool whose strings are being pulled by self-interested robber barons. Obama does not need to say one word. Let these facts speak for themselves.
I say this as a former respecter of John McCain. He had my respect because it seems that up until this election cycle, he always conducted himself with basic decency and had some original ideas. He WAS a very brave man. In his dotage, he has become the wholly-owned "thing" of the shadowy oligarchs who run this country.
He has lost my respect but perhaps gained my pity.

he lost my respect but gained my pity
when you hear more about his long history of sadism and fits of anger, that pity will turn to contempt.
I can't find the link but there's an amazing article written by a guy who went to military school with him and then was also a POW with him. I also heard the guy on the radio. McCain would viciously haze his subordinates, then have horrible fits of anger, then later get emotional and want to be pals again and so on. A classic case of some kind of psychological disorder that we really don't want anywhere near the Oval Office.

And the delightful thing about this is that nothing Obama actually said is conclusively a knock against McCain's age.
"Losing his bearings," could refer to McCain's normally ethical behavior (LMAO!!) diminishing into the smear tactic he's employed here. He has, in that sense, lost his way. It's actually a compliment to McCain, although a backhanded one.
It's Salter who thinks Obama's talking about McCain's age. He's the one injecting thoughts about McCain's age into this- as Burton points out.

McCain lost his bearings a long time ago, when he was a much younger man, 6-8 years younger to be precise. There is a long list of changed positions and wierdness like hugs for Bush, tolerance for the spiritual wingnut "agents of intolerance," and his obsessive support for the Bush admnistration's failed foreign and economic policies.
He has lost his bearings and he is old. But let's be clear; being younger didn't seem to help him with his bearings.
He's old. Obama is 1/2 African-American. Hillary is a woman. Who cares. This is another manufactured controversy.

Im sorry, but the "Hamas" line is right along using White voters against Obama. It instills fear.
PERSONALLY, the more easterners and foreigners that like him, the better. They are less likely to attack his House. They are less likely to spread false propaganda. And they are less likely to see us as a enemy.(Not that Hamas, Terrorist in general, or Al Qaeda have ever mentioned "black people, hispanic, or asians" in any of their race/political stylized crimes".
I might as well say this now:
Yes black people know that alot of "new" foreigners(first generation) do NOT like or trust Black or Hispanic people, based on area they moved to, imo, but they dont "hate us". They dont necessarily even dislike us, most arent close enough to develop that "sense" that what i call "rural amercan" or conservatives(never change) have.
All they know is that white politicians act real uppity, fuck up their native customs and act with disrespect to their homeland and customs.
The rest of us, never have. They might have to lump us all in with the American/United States Citizens generalization, but their is a reason they dont take black people/soldiers hostage.(Partly joke, partly truth) :P
^ This brings a question to mind. Does anyone here even get the reasonings behind this? Does anyone here realize the underlying weakness here? Just curious.
Id rather them like Obama(or ANY presidential Candidate), than hate him, but Republicans are going to use that so they can try and turn people afraid. This is going to be interesting to see.

The guy who has sold his soul is McCain. I could not believe his comment about Obama welcoming the despot to our Country. McCain is the one who started this and when Obama responds, he starts to whine. I wrote in McCain in 2000 and 2004 since I knew far to much about the Bush nefarious behavior when I lived in Texas. As it turns out, my judgment was correct. He turned out to conduct hos Presidency like the Frat boy he is. Bear in mind that it is McCain who gripped about the war for years till he now that he is running and now has to suck it up to the Neo-cons. Now obviously he has sold his soul and he is not a bit of good any more. He is truly mistaken if he thinks Obama is going to allow him to make those Bush-esque sorts of charges about Obama expecting no definite response. It just is not going to happen and all his nasty name-calling does is to make McCain look like Bush 3, or that he is in his dotage without any sense of reality. AND that my friend, we cannot afford. When McCain begins to act like he is not diddly headed, we all will breathe a sigh of relief. Then we will hope he will raise his campaigning to some dignified expressions for a change.

Here's my game plan idea:
1) McCain has a temper like a mofo
2) Even back in the early 90s he was trying to run for president and the rap was that his hot temper was a liability. That character flaw is embedded in people's minds going way back
3) If we can get him to explode on tape ... bingo
4) The McCain primary campaign came unglued and went down to single digits last year after his Baghdad market debacle. He was left for dead until Giuliani, Thompson et al fell on their faces so pathetically that he was able to back into the nomination by default. There's a genuine potential for McCain's general election campaign to go in the tank.
5) Once the general starts, there's no un-nominating him. They're stuck unless he dies of old age.
6) If he's touchy about his age, then everyone (except the gentlemanly Obama) should slam him on it until he blows a gasket. Obama could slip in a subtle innocent-sounding age dig at a debate and who knows - McCain might go ballistic on primetime TV. From eye witness accounts I've read, when the old boy goes off, it ain't pretty.

McCain's declining faculties are shown by his idiotic health plan (raise taxes on benefits and mail the proceeds directly to insurers), his inconsistency on Iraq (it isn't like SK; no, it is), and his confusion about key the basic religious and ethnic dynamics in the ME. So, Salter's hypersensitivity on this is understandable. They see it as a weakness and want to declare it off limits for polite discussion. However, I think they are going to look foolish over-reacting in the way that Salter did to everything that could potentially be construed by someone as referencing McCain's advanced age or declining faculties.

At the age of six, John McCain, a young lad in knickerbockers, saw a telegram arrive for his father. It detailed the explosion of the Battleship Maine and called the young naval officer to active duty.
Little Johnny did not see his father again until the end of the war, but his sense of pride had already assured that he would follow family tradition and attend Annapolis, where he would earn the fond nickname "McNasty" from fellow midshipmen.
If a man can't lose his bearings once in a while it just means he is not being mavericky enough. Full speed ahead.
May 9, 2008 7:59 AM | Reply | Permalink
"Losing your bearing" is a nautical term. I think it's fair to make a nautical reference when discussing a third generation Naval officer. If McCain is concerned he is being projecting an image of approaching senility, he shouldn't get into an argument with his mother about what day of the week he was born on - that ad makes it seem that McCain's memory is going faster than his mother's. Also in that ad, I find it telling that 1) the baby shower was "at the club" - just who is the elitist in this race? and 2) that they were given 27 bottles of Scotch as shower gifts - it seems like McCain's dad must have been awfully fond of a wee dram.
On another note, overnight Super Delegate news:
- previously uncommitted OR Congressman Peter DeFazio now supporting Obama with lass than two weeks to the primary there.
- Clinton Super Delegate Congressman Donald Payne of NJ is switching to Obama.
That nets Obama three SDs, and I think puts him currently just 4.5 behind Hillary.

Actually, losing your bearing(s) is a military insult moreso than an age insult. When you lose your military bearing, it is considered a deep failure.
The fact is, it is ridiculous to assert that a Presidential candidate has ties to Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda or any other radical Islamic organization. What the McCain camp is trying to do is continue the covert muslim smear campaign. They are trying to make Obama one of THEM, hence unAmerican.
To make this simple:
A vote for McCain is a vote for Bush's third term. If you want more of what the last eight years has brought this country, then by all means vote McCain. If you want more flag-draped coffins, secrecy, market manipulation, and cowbow diplomacy, then your political home is in the GOP projects.
If you want America to continue to behave (and fall apart) like an empire, then vote for McCain. If you believe that America has done NO WRONG over the last 8 years, then vote for McCain.
If you are an Orthodox American, vote McCain.
If you are a Reformist American, vote Obama.

I watched the interview. In context it clearly had nothing to do with age. The point he was making is that John McCain is getting caught up in the idea of being president and losing his bearings.
It had nothing to do with age and everything to do with the fact that McCain is losing sight of his core values in order to be president. He has been since 2000, and the Hamas smear is just another example that McCain long ago disembarked the Straight-Talk Express.

Exactly. For the McCain campaign to try to make it an ageism issue makes me wonder why they would do that.
a) Distract from the core issues. Which is their accusation that Obama is endorsed by Hamas therefore he is somehow connected to Hamas.
b.)distract from McCain's history of flip floppiing between 2000 and 2008.
c.) Get ahead of the ageism issue so thaey can accuse Obama of playing the race card at some time in the future.
d.) Their campaign has a rage problem like the Senator.

Obama's reference to McCain's losing his bearings may not have anything to do with McCain's age. After all a 10-year old child lost in the shopping mall can be said to have lost her bearings. But the metaphor is spot-on. The word "bearing" refers to where the compass is pointing towards a destination. Obama's comment means McCain has no idea where America is right now and where it is heading.
It is ABSOLUTELY SPOT-ON and he should continue to use it.
The Republicans know that this was the true intent of Obama's remark, and are trying to cover it over with the age issue.

I find it a little ironic that John McCain would jump to conclusions regarding Obama's comment about McCain "losing his bearings". I stumbled across an old 1992 video at Youtube where McCain is attacking Delores Alfond verbally bringing her to tears. While McCain is on his rant he refers to General John Vessey and states that Vessey is, "doing the best that he could at age 70". Now, am I wrong here or is McCain insulting this man's abilities because of his age?? And McCain is, as of this date, 71-years old (and soon to be 72). Hmmmm
The remark is about 4 min into the tape:

BO has not done well in the elderly voting cohort for the Democrats. This is also the group most likely to have reservations about a black man being president. Could we be playing into their hands of wanting to piss off the elderly?
I know it gives them way too much intellectual depth but there is that chance. The 60 and older vote at a much greater rate than those younger.

Decision 2008:
Let's see here, how am I going to vote. This McCain guy is 71, or 72? Well, the choice is clear. I'm going to vote for the guy with almost no experience who pals around with America-haters and terrorist bombers. He's a black guy, and it's so cool to vote for a black guy. It's a no-brainer, and since I have no brains, my choice is clear.
Now the really tough question: Who to vote for on American Idol?????

Well, the "experience" card worked wonderfully for Clinton. Here's hoping McCain tries the same failed strategy.

I guess McCain saw all the talk about racism and sexism.
Get ready for "ageism".
I agree, no reason to piss off the elderly, and McCain will raise the issue all by himself by being an idiot. Not really age, tho, always was an idiot I suspect.
But get ready for the McCain camp to cry and whine about "ageism" to play the victim card. Like in this case, where it is pure bullshit.
It's also a nice tactic to pretend there's a tit-for-tat when the GOP is accused of their very real race-baiting. Hillary used sexism as a shield in some ways. McCain is trying the same thing.

He lost his bearings when he left his wife to marry the heiress, the one who will never release her tax returns because she's "not the candidate". And I agree, that has nothing to do with age, it refers to moral bearings.

Losing ones bearings means they've lost they're way, their direction. As in compass bearings - you don't know where you are, you're lost. It has nothing to do with age, but questioning McCain's moral compass on this issue.
Now if he would have said he lost his marbles...

Yes, that's right. And if Obama wants to explain his use of these words, that's exactly what he'll say. McCain used to be principled. He took a principled stand on Bush tax cuts, on the use of torture, on immigration. But now, he has sacrificed those principles and basically decided to follow Bush policies deeper into the wilderness.
Thus, he has lost his bearings. And this is not the last time you will hear this theme.

Will McCain complain about a common Obama stump theme?

And what about McCain saying on The Daily Show in response to this supposed Hamas "endorsement" saying that "I'll be their worst nightmare!"
Is that kind of bravado really going to help anything? It's anti-Teddy Roosevelt policy: Speak Loudly and Carry a Small Stick. If that sort of language is any indication of McCain's idea of "diplomacy", then he really is just following Bush's footsteps. Sad and stupid.

Didn't read all comments but as an Obama supporter I hope age doesn't become a huge factor in this election. I mean that seems discriminatory. Maybe Obama's comments were taken to be so, but I think he just has to be extra careful, what with how everything is SPUN out of control! I mean for Mccain to throw in the Hamas thing - that is awful, but let McCain run his mouth. STAY ON THE HIGH ROAD on this type of stuff, stick with the issues. McCain has so much dirt on himself though...

I think Age is going to be very relevant.
McCain is going to use his age, ie "experience" as a positive.
It's up to Dems to (subtly) make the charge that McCain has lost some of his mental facilities, and will be over 80 in four years.
After all, Obama's biggest perceived weakness is that he is "inexperienced" and "young". Of course, that also fits in with his "outside Washington" and "change" platform.

Actually, he will be only 76 in four years, but that is still pretty old for a president. Reagan had early Alzheimer's symptoms even during his first term and he was younger than Mccain when he took office. Last month McCain was confused between Shiite and Sunni even after being corrected by Joe Lieberman.

Explain to me exactly why age shouldn't be an issue. We have all watched strong young Presidents age under the strain of the office of President of the United States. If elected McCain would be the oldest President ever sworn in. He would be older than the mandatory retirement age for judges in my state. He has a history of cancer and is disabled as the result of an airplane crash and being tortured for five years.
Are you saying that Americans don't have a right to consider age and health when choosing a President. That is political correctness taken to an unbelievable extreme.
The burden is on McCain to prove he is vigorous and healthy enough to be President.

Cry me a river. When McCain leaves off from the Hamas-wants-Obama nonsense he can presume to lecture Obama about tasteless attacks.

i heard mccain was going to run a nice-guy campaign, which sounds like a good plan for the repubs. he is trying hard to woo the faith community of this country so that means the Dems must organize, register votes and make sure the repubs dont steal this thing.

What a shocker! McCain plays the age card -- against himself! Obama should be ashamed of himself to let McCain do that.

Wow, is it really going to be THIS easy to goad his campaign into shooting themselves in the foot? This could be a lot of fun!

I'm from Arizona, and John and Cindy McCain between them have enough sh*t on their shoes to start a poop factory. I keep wondering when all of this stuff is going to come out--maybe really close to the election, but it will come out. The thought of John McCain in the White House is frightening--same for Cindy (and her hidden, underground Tax Returns). He is really pathetic and will never become President, at least in a legal way. Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran? WTF? What an a-hole.

If I were Obama, I'd just ignore it.
McCain will probably forget about it soon enough anyway.
