McCain Ad: I'm Not That Old -- Meet My Mom!

John McCain has an interesting new ad aimed at women, featuring his mother reminiscing with him about his birth:

The spot is running on select cable channels, many with largely female audiences: ABC Family, A&E, Hallmark Channel, Lifetime, Oxygen and TLC.

The ad seems to be aiming for two birds with one stone: Reaching out to women voters, and also assuring people that John McCain couldn't possibly be too old if his mother is able to shoot an ad with him.

I found it funny that they had to put in the word "son" between parenthesis and "mother" in the other to say, "Yes, even though he looks old as I am, he's my son!"

I think she looks pretty darned good for her age, to be honest.

McCain actually looks worse than she does. You'd know my mother was my grandmother's daughter, just from the way she looks. Aging gracefully isn't apparently with John McCain's ability to do so.

Thats totally just John McCain wearing a wig.

Hilarious!

I'm waiting for Roberta McCain to wander off script and say something horribly offensive.....

this is a terrible add. They look like husband and wife.

Which is why they had to explain that McCain was her son, and she his mother.

This is the worst campaign ad thus. If anything just let her do the ad by herself. If you turn the sound down, they look like they are in an elderly home talking about the good ole days.

And here's our daughter Cindy!

LOL. You just about slayed me with that comment.

Here's our daughter Cindy, the trollop!
~

She looks great, but the ad is ineffective, really, I didn't get anything positive or negative from it, just kind of silly.

**That's just what I was thinking! Oh! He went back to his first wife!

If he really wants to appear young, maybe he should have a "meet my many women I've had in my life during my marriage(s)........"

That was a great ad. The "giggle giggle...and my mom does too" was pretty transparent but I'd say that ad is going to be pretty successful.

I just thought it was funny that he appeared senile, because his memories were wrong. Whoops!

Yeah, I was expecting them to launch into "Yes, I Remember It Well."

I'd like to meet his dad! Genetically, he's also influence by that as well.

Where's dad????

Dad died in 1981.

At age 70.

Mr Kleefeld - we might also take a moment to note that this ad is, of course, going into rotation just a few days ahead of Mother's Day. The snark is appreciated, but this ad is really nothing beyond Hallmark in terms of strategic capacity.

I have to say, though - the music alone is priceless. :)

Makes Johnny look alzheimerish. He can't even remember what day of the week he was supposed to be born on?

And who was it who was supposed to be enjoying the 12 bottles of scotch that were supposed to be presents for Johnny? That didn't exactly make any sense.

Daddy had the same name. As did Grandpa.

Three Sidneys.

Imagination and creativity has never been a hallmark of the McCain Clan.

It makes him look even older than he is.

What an interesting tactic.

I guess you go to War with the Mother you have.

I find it amazing that McCain keeps bringing up the age issue on his own. Considering the free pass the press is giving him, he should keep his mouth shut, not spend money pointing out how old he is.

[Off topic] Anyone know what happened to the Latest Reader Posts list? I see only Recommended Reader Posts. Is removing Latest some kind of crowd control intervention?

Please refer to the Housekeeping post a few articles prior to this one for insight.

Same woman who said that a lot of people will have to "hold their nose" to vote for her son.

Eric, can we have a separate post for that Research2000 poll?

Noriega is FOUR POINTS BEHIND CORNYN. THIS IS IN TEXAS PEOPLE. TEXAS.

What is it with drinking shots this year, anyway?

I think it is a solid ad in that it shows that he has good genes/longevity on his side. At least that's the point he is trying to make.

Of course the storytelling is there to show she still has all her faculties as well, remembering an event 72 years ago and all...

I've known many senior citizens who could remember events from their childhoods clear as day, but ask them what happened the day before or even earlier that day and well...

How long has McCain's dad been dead? Men die younger.

Just that he feels compelled to make ads like this makes me laugh.

More importantly, it makes me feel even more assured that the election from the past that this one is most resembling is 1996. McCain is going down just like Bob Dole did, stumbling off the stage.

It is a good ad.

Although... showing mommy having a better memory than Johnny, seems a bet counterproductive.

I liked the ad, and I liked his mom. At least with his mom, he didn't keep saying, 'my friend' with each sentence, and he didn't talk in that quite that deadened tone that he uses in public.

The ad would have been perfect if he was sitting on Mommy's lap.

How could you miss an opportunity to hit upon Mama McCain's straight talk express on C-Span (courtesy of Fox News)?

Q: How much support do you think he has among the base of the Republican Party?

Roberta McCain: I don't think he has any. I don't know what the base -- maybe I don't know enough about it but I have not seen any help whatsoever.

Q: So can he then go on and become the nominee of this party?

Roberta McCain: Yes. I think holding their nose, they are going to have to take him. Now, I'm really popping off, but he worked like a dog to get Bush re-elected.

He has backed Bush in everything except Rumsfeld. Have you ever heard other Senators and Congressman backing bush over eight years? Find me, give me a name.

And I have never seen any public recognition of the work that he has done for the Republican party.

--------

Here's some footage of the Fox News bit from www.rawstory.com:

http://rawstory.com/news/2007/McCains_mom_gives_GOP_some_straight_0125.html

The media has generally been silent about the enthusiasm gap (turnout, fundraising, crowds, media interest, etc.) between Obama and McCain among their respective bases. Bush won in 2004 because of base turnout.

Without excitement for their own candidate, the GOP is going to have to really work to push up Obama's negatives, and I can't see the Wright stuff sustaining them through months of discussions about health care and foreclosures.

The words of Roberta McCain really should return to the forefront of the public discussion to bring a reality check to the state of the general election race. This ad is a perfect opportunity to talk about McCain's soft support.

Not to mention that she feels that there is no Republican who has stood more closely with George W. Bush. I wonder how that will play.

Is this some kind of ad for assisted living???

user-pic

No.

For "Depends".

That is the creepiest ad EVER.

user-pic

Awkward is the word that comes to mind for this ad. She does look great if you're into Stepford grandmothers. But John looks like he's not sure who this woman is.

As soon as they cut the cameras off he called her a trollop and a c**t before punching a fellow senator in the nuts.

Terrific add. Makes the point that he'll be healthy and vital for a long time. Connects you to his family. They're cute and humble folk. But does walk a fine line connecting McCain the candidate and old age. (Looks like a well edited interview. I'd love to see the raw footage.)

Let me revise that. Fucking terrific add. Suggests that a McCain presidency is going to be friendly fire-side chats and Peanuts holiday specials. Hey, don't get me wrong: I aint voting for the war monger, but it's going to be a fantastic election campaign between him and Obama.

Rats. s/add/ad/. That'll learn me to type this late.

Actually, if McCain only spoke as nicely as his mom does, it would help him a lot. Unfortunately, while I used to say he spoke like
bush lite, I now say he is talking like Bush in full bloom. Amazing that the Straight Talk express has jumped the tracks and more to the point, that it is not even alive any more. Sad, Sad. His comment about Obama and his handling of that terrorist was the most mean-spirited I have ever heard out of him. Frankly, that sort of comment is more like the "black baby" charge that the Bush camp leveled against McCain. Only thing, the electorate is four years wiser, and they have seen, experienced, and KNOWN the trouble that Bush and his copy cats like McCain are capable of raising. Now the straight talker is talking crooked and it simply will not work. Obama will not be stupid enough to just let McCain pull those Bushisms on him, without a rapid, forceful but honest response. McCain may cry foul, but if he cannot stand the heat in the kitchen, quit lobbing those fire balls at Obama impugning his patriotism. Not working Mr. McCain and you, of all people, should know exactly how that sort of thing feels when the opponent stoops so low. You have sold you soul to the Devil, John McCain!!!!

Is Friday a traditional day for birth or something? Why does McCain say 'traditional'?

I like how his mother tells him it 'was not a happy hour' ... and what's up with her saying 'and I told you, I - I've gotta go, we're gonna have this baby' and continually referring to him as 'this child'?
