GOP House Candidate: "Sometimes A Leader Has To Step Forward" To Spread Abortion Story About Opponent

We've obtained a copy of the campaign e-mail sent out to a reported 60,000 people by House candidate Kevin Mannix (R-OR), in which he re-distributes a 2006 e-mail accusing his primary opponent Mike Erickson of impregnating a younger woman and paying for her abortion in 2000.

The 2006 e-mail, written by a friend of the woman in question, doesn't hold back, accusing Erickson of "having wild parties involving cocaine use on his house boat," and being the sort of man who campaigns on family values but secretly drops a woman ten years his junior off at an abortion clinic, hands her some cash and then drives away.

Erickson has categorically denied the allegations contained in the woman's email.

"Sometimes a leader has to step forward and take responsibility for delivering difficult news," Mannix said in his email. He then added, "I cannot in good conscience allow this election to proceed without being open with you as to this sad situation which has been presented to me."

The full text of both emails is available after the jump.

From the Desk of Kevin L. Mannix

May 12, 2008

Dear (recipient),

Sometimes a leader has to step forward and take responsibility for delivering difficult news.

Recently, I have been presented with extremely disturbing information about my opponent, Mike Erickson, and the disrespectful way he treated a young woman.

This information is reflected in the verified email that is enclosed with this letter. The only alteration I have made to the email is to remove a last name and email address.

My campaign supporters have conferred with people involved in this story, and I am convinced that the story is real. The information was provided by others to the media, and I understand the media have carried out extensive investigations and have confirmed many of the details.

It is important that you, the voter, be aware of this situation. Rarely have I been confronted with such a difficult decision as to whether to proceed with something of this nature. But what is on the line here is the character of the person who will represent you in Congress.

Many people have suggested to me that I allow some "other party" to share this information with you so that I can stand by and watch the situation develop. I believe it is important for me to take personal responsibility for sharing this story.

In my twenty years of public service, I have been careful to work on behalf of the people and to be open about the issues which confront us. I cannot in good conscience allow this election to proceed without being open with you as to this sad situation which has been presented to me.

Sincerely,

Kevin L. Mannix

Subject: Mike Erickson, Pro-Life?? What about Tawnya??

When I first saw that there was a Mike Erickson for office, I thought to myself that there is no way that it is the same Mike Erickson. While watching a parade in Gladstone with my family this summer my suspicions were confirmed.

I was surprised to see that the Mike Erickson, who in 2000 was having wild parties involving cocaine use on his house boat, was running for office. I just thought to myself that he must be running Republican... I was fine with letting this go.

Why am I writing now???

I was outraged to received his campaign flyer arrive at my house with implications of pro-life / pro-family. Where were these ideals in the year 2000 when he drove my friend (whom he impregnated) to an abortion clinic in NE Portland, handed her some cash, and left her at the door. Where was he when I was holding her hand through the entire process as she cried for her lost child? Ten years his junior and already a single mom, she really felt like she had no choice in the matter without his support. How dare he think that he could get away with these hypocritical lies. I realize that hypocracy is a part of political campaigning, but my friend deserves more than this.

Again, I ask the question, what about Tawnya?

If you have further interest in this news story, Tawnya is open to comment. You can email me your interest at ________________.

Thank you,

Kristi ________

Hey - if it came in an email it must be true.

I just found out Obama is a muslim.

I love the internets.

HAHA.... The craven political part of me wants this to be true, but I'm really hoping this didn't happen. Douchebags (assuming the story is true) like that should be neutered.

When Republicans attack, indeed. They're loathsome.

Why not just start making crap up, and sending that out?

Dear Voter,

Sometimes it's just necessary for someone to be a leader. Recently, I came into information suggesting that Kevin Mannix routinely has enthusiastic sex with goats. I think it's important that everyone be aware of this when considering choices for the primary.

Sincerely,

Your leader.

PS. No word on how the goats feel about it.

Question: can Erickson sue -- I know he's a public figure, but if something is reported in detail that is false, isn't it still libel? And if he can and doesn't.....

p.s. No matter how tawdry, I think this is fair game if:
1) it's true
2) he's running on anti-abortion platform.

I think the problem isn't with the particular events that the e-mail references. It's that it's completely uncorroborated.

I agree completely.

user-pic

I'm with you on this one. If these GOP doofi want to run their own circular firing squad, who am I to interfere?

What a bunch of idiots!

user-pic

As an Oregon Democrat, I am quite happy to let them form up their ovoid firing squad, and more than willing to do my part and pass them the ammo if asked.

It's always hard to prove libel if you're a public figure, but this is beyond loathsome.

When there are specific allegations such as these I'd think it's not so difficult. The question always is whether you want to give them wider circulation by filing a libel suit.

I agree that if it's made up, rumor, unverified, that it's totally disgusting to send out the email.
But if it is verified, isn't it even more loathsome that he runs on an antiabortion platform but secretly arranges for an abortion when it suits his convenience?
I do think politicians' personal lives should be left out campaign attacks, UNLESS the politician is imposing moral standards on everyone but him/herself. Hypocrisy should be exposed.
I have no idea whether it's true or not -- if it's made up I hope he sues the hell out of the other candidate and wins.
But if it's true, then I think people who are thinking about voting for him should know about it.

I'm amused by how politicians feign reluctance over slamming their opponents and say they're being compelled to do so out of an obligation to voters. Seeing a lot of that lately.

user-pic

It's the "don't throw me in that briar patch" effect when the prospects of tossing your opponent and anvil avails itself in a tight race.

I am just amused by the republicans eating their own and being a victim of their own dirty tricks.
Without knowing the merits of the situation, I can't say which candidate is the sleazebag but I can only hope more republican districts self-destruct.

Although not to be too partisan, it does sadden me when more moderate (sane) republicans (and dems for that matter) get burned by their party for not being far enough on either end of the liberal/conservative spectrum. (see Chaffee (who endorsed Obama btw))

i find it a little disturbing that the majority of responses have been to slam the republican instead of considering the veracity of the story.

I find that someone fabricating such a story to be a little far-fetched.

I feel for the woman who had to go through such an abhorrent procedure.

Though I'm pro-life, what I find more hypocritical is for any man to pass judgement on any woman on what she decides to do with her life in regards to reproduction.

I pray for all involved.

And yes, it is possible for democrats to be a**holes.
Look at the AG in Ohio and the mayor in Detroit.

This email was originally sent during the 2006 election to Democratic Congresswoman Darlene Hooley who was running for reelection against her challenger Erickson who is an anti-abortion candidate. To Hooley's credit she DID NOT use this information because it is uncorroborated. It should be noted that Hooley is pro-choice.

That Kevin Mannix would immediately use this info to smear a fellow Republican in the primary is all you need to know about the state of the Republican party in Oregon. Oregonians have been abandoning the Republican party in droves quite apart from Bush/Cheney because at the state level Republicans have become an embarrassment.

And Lon Mabon ("May-be-one") got the ball rolling down-hill at the GOP back in the late 80s with his anti-gay anti-abortion wingnuttery and high-jacking of the GOP state chair. It has been a slow moving train-wreck for them ever since (the only down-side is I would like an honest and loyal opposition to keep our Dems on the up and up).

Blue State - Not JUST because he's a Rep. Here is a brief history of his college days in student government. There is reason to believe he is less than honest.

From The Vanguard (Portland State student newspaper)

Feb, 1987: The Coalition of Minority, International and Globally Concerned students publicly requests the resignation of ASPSU President Erickson and Vice President Swift. The coalition was told by Popular Music Board Director Michael Brewin that Erickson and Swift allegedly said, during a homecoming preparation meeting, that they wanted that year's dance to be whites only.

March, 1987: Brewin said that he requested that a mostly African-American band play for the homecoming dance. Brewin contended that Erickson made a face when Brewin mentioned the band and Swift allegedly said, "We don't want black people coming to this dance. This is for whites only."

Erickson denied involvement in the incident in 1987 and in 2006. Erickson said that Swift had stated that ASPSU wanted to have a different band that would appeal to older students. He said there was no talk of a whites-only dance and said that many reported events in the Vanguard during those times were unfounded.

April, 1987: Oregon Gov. Neil Goldschmidt writes a statement for Erickson to give to congressmen during a trip to Washington, D.C.

Erickson uses parts of the statement on campaign literature for the following year's ASPSU presidential election. Erickson said in 1987 and in 2006 that he had permission to use the statement, but a Goldschmidt spokesman said in 1987 that Erickson had no permission to use the statement as campaign literature.

May, 1987: Erickson is disqualified for the 1987-88 presidential race by the ASPSU's highest court at the time, because of the "deceptive nature" of some of Erickson's campaign literature, specifically referencing his use of Goldschmidt's statement.

May, 1987: Tod Northman is elected 1987-88 ASPSU president, beating one of three opponents after two others, including Erickson, are disqualified.

May, 1987: Erickson contests election, requesting the decisions about disqualifications be revisited.

July 1, 1987: Northman is affirmed as victor of 1987-88 ASPSU presidential election.

Get ready for an ugly Fall.

This what being a Republican in Oregon has become.

Back in the day, there was Mark Hatfield who was against the Vietnam War before it became fashionable and Tom McCall who helped create many of the models of environmentalism and land-used planning. I voted for these men.

Now all that's left to the Oregon Republican Party are angry little men who cling to no-new-taxes, we-hate-gays and no-abortions rhetoric.

Mannix keeps running for stuff, deficit spending the Oregon Republican party into place that it'll never get out of. He's in a battle now where the goal appears to be to prove who's the scarier wingnut and he and the Republican Party all seem genuinely confused when they lose elections.

user-pic

Agreed. It is ashame that the sane GOPers which Oregon has a good history of producing (which you touch on) are so poorly served by the GOP of the past decade or so.

That said, we Democrats in Oregon are all for welcoming sane moderates out in the cold of GOP wing-nuttery, into our big-tent of solid environmental conservancy, sound fiscal policy and equality under the law for everyone.

user-pic

"accusing Erickson of [...] being the sort of man who campaigns on family values but secretly drops a woman ten years his junior off at an abortion clinic, hands her some cash and then drives away."

I believe we call that sort of person a "Republican"...

user-pic

Muta - and Norma Paulus and John Frohnmeyer (before he became Phil Knight's lapdog.) And, sleazy creep that he was, for a time Bob Packwood was the leading voice on a woman's right to choose (let's not examine motivation too closely, eh?)

user-pic

Very late, but good to see all the oregon-ized thinking on this thread ...
