Hillary Raised $22 Million In April
Hillary spokesperson Howard Wolfson confirms that she raised $22 million last month.
Obama raised over $31 million, putting him nearly $10 million ahead of her. Interestingly, that's actually a smaller spread than in March and February: Obama outraised her by around $20 million in both months.
This is probably due to the fact that Obama donors know he's basically got the race sewed up. Even though his $31 million is an extraordinary pull, it's dwarfed by his huge haul in each of the previous two months.
Meanwhile, Hillary's numbers have pretty much held steady, albeit at a lower level.
Late Update: Keep in mind that this total is supposed to include the $10 million she raised in the 24 hours after her Pennsylvania victory on April 22.
Late Late Update: Some of you have asked whether this includes money Hillary lent her own campaign. It's a good question. She lent her campaign $5 million on April 1st; the rest of her loan came in May. We're trying to determine whether the $22 million includes the loan.
Late Late Late Update: Wolfson confirms that the $22 million does not include the loan.

Obliterated? I'd say that they determined their own future democratically when their elected officials thought they could curry favor with President HRC [how ridiculous that now sounds] by moving to sew up her "INEVITABLE" victory at an early date.
You live by the rules you agree to unless you want to be seen as weak and vacillating special pleaders who cannot be trusted to play the game straight.
Too damn bad, HRC is history, the only question is how bad the trail of scorched flesh will smell.

May 20, 2008 9:32 PM | Reply | Permalink
Doubtful - the money base hasn't had to be "maxed" for the most part to be effective. Everything being put in is being well managed, so no individual donor is being tapped too hard to keep it aloft.
Anecdotal, but we're nowhere close to maxed on primary. Will be more than happy to max for the GE if needed, but that base is just going to keep expanding from here.

It's a good haul, but I have to admit, they outdid us. Obama's fundraising is unprecendented.
The thing that gets me more excited though, is think about how much they would have had if they were raising money together? That's 53 million dollars in one month.
It's time we Democrats teamed up once and for all to take on the GOP. Let's undo the last 8 years and start over. If it's with Obama, then so be it, but the time is now.

Just now on MSNBC Howard Fineman made a good point. For the early part of the night to be all about Hillary is not a good thing from a perception point of view.
I think BO should have made a better effort in WV and KY. But then again we all know that 3-4 weeks from now we wont even remember this just like how every pundit tonight is forgetting that Huckabee and kicked McCain's but after he wrapped up the nomination

Obama should have treated WV and Kentucky the same way he treated Pennsylvania. I think it was a mistake not to. His reasoning is surely that if I'm going to lose why bother working the state and losing by 20 when I can write it off and lose by 3o.
He should also make a visit to PR, I think he could split those delegates if he tired.
I HATE the fact he's crawling across the finish line. HATE IT!
May 20, 2008 9:39 PM | Reply | Permalink
Don't sweat it, he just needed to get past these 2 states. Oregon will bring him home, PR will be close to a tie either direction and he will blow her out in SD/MT so he will go out on a high note.
May 20, 2008 9:45 PM | Reply | Permalink
Look at it this way: the more time he spent in KY, the less time he could have spent in Oregon. The end result would have been WORSE: he gets blown out in KY (20+ points) and squeaks out a 4 or 5 point victory. She picks up 10 or more net pledged delegates as a result.
As it stands, she'll likely net 13 out of KY and he'll get +12 or 13 out of Oregon. The night is a PUSH. He can afford that. She can't.
As it was in the beginning, it's the math.

We need to know about the debts, and how much money she gave herself...
The brightest news is that Senator Obama has reached the major milestone!!!
He has won the majority of the pledge delegates....

I know what you mean Jonze but After PA the race became about the general election and the superdelegates. Obama had to put his energy into those places and notin symbolic campiagning in WV and KY. This is a long term game and he was willing to let Clinton crow with her rural wins in order to sew up the bigger prize of the nomination
May 20, 2008 9:42 PM | Reply | Permalink
I also think that by not really campaigning in WV and KY he was allowing Hillary to have a goodbye tour. What he wasnt expecting was the huge margins of her victories.

And after 15 months you still believe anything that the Clinton campaign says?
You must believe she was always fighting against the disenfranchisement of MI and FL (HA!), that she had a plan after Iowa and NH (Whoa Nelly!) and that KY (jelly) and WV (white voters) are the most important things in the world to her. You've gotta believe she aced the all-important commander-in-chief test during that harrowing sniper-filled flight into Bosnia, that her Annie Oakley rifle helped her shoot varmints in the wild woods of PA, that she's never been associated with unsavory characters like, oh, communists (check), felons (check), sex offenders (check), crazy pastors (check), highly prejudiced people (check)....
You've been spun, my friend...

Stop listening to the TV pundits. They have a huge interest in making them seem like this thing isn't over. They have to milk this for the ratings. So they put on the Hillary talking heads on TV and pretend that the super-delegates are idiots. It is a ratings game.
CNN especially - they've had the highest ratings and biggest wins in years. And it is because their identity is all about political commentary and creating controversy.
