Hillary Nabs A Super-Delegate
The Hillary campaign announces that she's picked up a super-delegate today, her first of the week: Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley.
But check out this quote from Coakley, which has an after-the-fact ring to it...
"Regardless of the outcome of the primary, Mrs. Clinton's energy, stamina, and resolve have changed the course of history for women seeking office, including the presidency, and I dare say, have changed the course of history of Presidential politics in the United States. It is for these reasons that I will vote for Hillary Clinton in August at the Nominating Convention."
"Regardless of the outcome of the primary..."
MSNBC's latest totals: Obama has 1,906 overall delegates, while Hillary has 1,724.

Hillary's Sargent At Arms told us, last week, that he was only going to do an occasional summery of additional super delegates declaring.
When it comes to the flood of super delegates that have been declaring for Senator Obama, Hillary's Sargent At Arms has kept his word, and almost ignored them.
Now Hillary gets one Super Delegate, and her
Sargent At Arms goes orgasmic, and turns it into a TPM news spectacular.

I think he left some wiggle room by saying he'd make individual posts if they were particularly noteworthy (like Senator Byrd yesterday). It's gotten so dismal for Hillary, I guess, that any superdelegate endorsing her is noteworthy. Her endorsement's eulogizing tone is interesting, too.

The math does not work for Hillary or for Barack, and here is why:
Both of them will not reach 2,025 delegates with out the help of the super delegates and keep in mind that super delegates can switch their votes. just because they have endorsed hillary or Barack does not mean that is who they will actually vote for in denver.... we will not have a true winner until denver unless hillary drops out of the race on June 3rd.
May 20, 2008 3:54 PM | Reply | Permalink
True. But Obama will get 2025 shortly (after tonight he'll be ~60 away) and I highly doubt once he reaches that a) that Hillary will stay in and b) the SDs would change their vote to take it away from him.
May 20, 2008 4:09 PM | Reply | Permalink
We shouldn't be cherry picking super-delegate endorsements to make fun of or to hold up. The system is dumb. But once you accept it then it is what it is. She can vote for Clinton for whatever reason she wants.
It is interesting that those who came out early, before the voting, are spared the scrutiny while only the late deciders are over-analyzed. Every one of those who analyzed before the primaries made their endorsement..."no matter what the outcome."
May 20, 2008 3:58 PM | Reply | Permalink
if hillary clinton can win over the popular vote with OUT michigan and florida being counted after all remaining primary's, then she can talk the super delegates into voting for her because it is the "will of the people"
if florida and michigan are not counted after may 31st meeting then 2,025 is what is need to win but if they are counted then 2,209 is what is need to win and votes from the super delegates and pleaged delegates aren't truly counted untill denver.
May 20, 2008 3:58 PM | Reply | Permalink
f hillary clinton can win over the popular vote with OUT michigan and florida being counted after all remaining primary's, then she can talk the super delegates into voting for her because it is the "will of the people"
True. But that's nearing the "impossible" territory.
May 20, 2008 4:08 PM | Reply | Permalink
And who exactly is going to decide which popular vote totals to count? There is a reason that delegates are used to decide the nominee and NOT the popular vote - how exactly are the caucuses going to be counted? My understanding is that only "estimates" are available for four states - ME, NV, IA, and WA - do you think that "estimates" are going to be good enough to overturn the results of the primary?
And let's just fantasize for a second that Clinton eeks out the popular vote total - do you think that all of the Obama supporters are just going to sit back, shrug their shoulders, and say "Yeah, even though the rules specify that the nominee is supposed to be decided by delegates - it does seem fair that the party give her the nomination." Do you really think she would stand even the slightest chance of unifying the party in that situation? What kind of AA turnout do you think you'd have for the GE? I'm afraid your dream scenario would only result in a disaster for the party in November.

Senator Obama composes and conducts a symphony, and TPM keeps it's ear plugs in.
Hillary burbs and farts, and TPM shouts bravo, bravo, bravo.

O I wouldn't, but she wasn't the first woman governor.
Nancy Pelosi is the first woman Speaker of the House and that's a big damn deal. That is a very powerful position.

Just learned something:
"The first female governor was Nellie Tayloe Ross of Wyoming who was elected on November 4, 1924 and sworn in on January 5, 1925. She was preceded in office by her late husband William Ross. Also elected on November 4 was Miriam A. Ferguson of Texas, but she was not sworn in until January 21, 1925. The first female governor elected without being the wife or widow of a past state governor was Ella T. Grasso of Connecticut, elected in 1974 and sworn in on January 8, 1975."
The more you know! Thanks, Wiki!

O shoot - I almost included her in my comment above - I know about Nellie.
I also knew about "Ma" Ferguson. They were quite the pair, Ma and Pa.
