Hillary Reportedly Will Hold No Public Events Tomorrow
On MSNBC, Tim Russert just reported that Hillary was scheduled to appear on the morning shows tomorrow.
But, says Russert, she canceled all her appearances.
...actually, MSNBC has confirmed that she will hold no public events at all:

That's a pretty big deal. Any appearance might force her to publicly defend staying in the race, obviously.

Certainly, sexist, offensive, atavistic, over-generalising statements about Hillary voters are a feature of the more enlightened Obama supporters.
I am ashamed to share candidate preferences with people like this, really.
May 7, 2008 5:52 AM | Reply | Permalink
Certainly one of the oddest adjective strings I've seen recently.
"Sexist, offensive, atavistic, over-generalizing..."
Sexist? Oh yeah, Hillary is really holding high that feminist banner. Her campaign hung a pair of metaphorical nuts around her waist about a month ago and she's been displaying them at every opportunity.
Offensive? Well, coming after sexist, it's like following blue with sky. Atavistic? Overkill for crude - hence another virtual repetition. (It means throwback, is what it means.)
"Over-generalizing"? So Hillary is a logical proposition, and we're grossly expanding her scope?
I think this just proves that Dan_the_man is Dan_the_dumbass, and I'm ashamed to share this thread with her.

Dan_the_man,
Though poorly worded, I think the person you're ripping into was just saying that the fat lady is singing, meaning "it's over"...not that some woman who shops at a low price store is crying after "her candidate's" misfortune. Give the guy a break. Or just stop assuming things.

She's not withdrawing, but those shows were booked under the assumption she was going to win Indiana by a decent margin.
She doesn't want to spend the morning defending her decision to stay in.
May 6, 2008 11:57 PM | Reply | Permalink
I don't know...if she's not withdrawing she needs to get out their and spin, spin, spin, like she's never spinned (span? spun?) before. This is an interesting development.

Maybe she's tired and doesn't want to get up that early.
Maybe she's "bushed."
May 7, 2008 12:12 AM | Reply | Permalink
All those extra hours she had to spend getting up earlier than her opponents to put on makeup.
That's been my least favorite "complaint" of the entire campaign - speaking as a feminist.
May 7, 2008 3:12 AM | Reply | Permalink
Not necessarily. Her surrogates need to get out there and spin, spin, spin.
May 7, 2008 12:22 AM | Reply | Permalink
I disagree, she has been all about defending herself, being the tough one. If there is an ounce of decency left in her she will be calling a press conference for the early afternoon and ending her little game.

May 7, 2008 3:27 AM | Reply | Permalink
Operation Chaos comes into play when (undeclared) superdelegates look at the numbers, not now.
With 217 pledged delegates to go, it looks like Obama will finish tonight about 180 delegates away from the magic number. Let's assume he only wins half of those remaining pledged delegates: 217/2 = 108. 180-108 = 72.
OK, so then 72 is the magic number. And approximately 270 superdelegates are undeclared, meaning only 1 in 4 needs to swing to Obama. The transparent meddling of Republicans in our primaries is convincing evidence on its face.
(Thanks, DemConWatch.blogspot.com, for making the math so easy for all of us.)

Mrs. Clintonโs advisers acknowledged that the results of the primaries were far less than they had hoped, and said they were likely to face new pleas even from some of their own supporters for her to quit the race. They said they expected fund-raising to become even harder now; one adviser said the campaign was essentially broke, and several others refused to say whether Mrs. Clinton had lent the campaign money from her personal account to keep it afloat.

In my best world of amazing dreams, BO and HRC have discussions tomorrow. BO helps her with campaign debts and they arrange a graceful exit after WV. BO wins Oregon and they both let it go on a win. HRC throws support to BO. MI and FL get a deal to be seated. McSame goes down to a 45 state defeat in Nov. Ahh well, one can dream....

Of course. And the significance of winning IN by 5,000 votes would be what, exactly?
It's squat. This ain't the electoral college. It really doesn't matter who's up by 5,000 at the end of the night. The spin game is over, and delegate math is all that's left.

Ding, Ding....give the man a cigar. It's the MSM who get all worked up about who "won", but it doesn't mean a damn thing. Hillary "won" Nevada but wound up with one fewer delegate.

You seem to be celebrating the victory of money over democracy. But if the Democrats used the same primary rules as the Republicans in winner-take-all-states, Hillary would have won the nomination months ago. As it is, it seems like the Republicans will nominate their strongest candidate while Democrats will nominate the candidate who can't carry the big and important swing states. Funny how things balance out in the end.

The money is democracy.
Living in Michigan, I really wanted to vote for Obama. Since he and all the other major candidates, except for Clinton, played by the rules and kept their names off the ballot, I had to vote for "Uncommitted," along with 40%.
Not able to do much about that, I donated $25 every month. That's my vote. That's one of the reasons Obama has sealed the deal. And that's democracy, monkey.

Holy shit.. at home finally and saw tweety just say something close to insightful. He was countering another commentator on MSNBC that the fateful mistake Clinton in this whole campaign back in 2002 when she voted for the war, and that gave someone like Obama the foundational opening to walk through.
That is why CLinton was always a "hold your nose if she gets the nod" candidate for me. Just as Kerry was (and lost) and I think deep down Democrats learned the lesson of 2004 and saw that we can square the circle with that kind of life-and-death judgement.

She cast the vote hoping to ensure the centrist/right side of the country she was "tough" enough for the White House.
Mistake #1 -- do not play with the lives of American soldiers when it comes to furthering your political gains.
She then was too calculating and decided to sit out 2004.
Mistake #2 -- have the guts to run against an unpopular president. I'm betting she could have won in 2004 against GWB. She was made to run against a Rovian candidate.
She then surrounded herself with people so insulated from the real world that they lost touch with what was really happening.
Mistake #3 -- never get lax about campaigning. Always run as if you were the underdog.
3 strikes -- you're out.
And the country is better for it. We do not want to give credence to "rule by dynasty" and we have come mighty close to it.

Coming from a Hillary supporter I can only assume that's a rhetorical question directed at yourself. But, playing along with your flawed assumptions, what does it say about your candidate that she's losing in every possible metric to a "weaker candidate and campaigner"? That argument only works if she, in fact, demonstrates that she's the opposite of both of the above, and ...
Oh, sorry about that, my phone's ringing: it's Reality and it wants to speak to you about your premises. Funny thing, Reality. Here's the wake-up call: if your "better campaigner" and "better candidate" keeps losing to an "unvetted rookie," then your argument collapses in on itself faster than Mark Penn after a donut binge.
Your race-baiting failed.
Your working-class pandering failed.
Your win-on-Super-Tuesday arrogance failed.
Time to reassess. You're welcome to join us as we pivot to take on McCain, but that's assuming you actually want to defeat him in November. If so, let's get to work.

Wake up and smell the coffee. Obama spent five times as much money and he still lost Indiana, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida and Michigan - the most important swing states. He only won North Carolina because every black person voted for him because he was black. If the Democratic voters of Florida and Michigan had not been disenfranchised Hillary would be the nominee today. Or if the Democrats used the same, much saner primary rules as the Republicans in winner-take-all states Hillary would be the nominee. The only reason that Obama will be the nominee is because he's a black man with a lot of money. And if you think that's enough to make him the president, you're in for a rude awakening come November.

Everyone I've talked to, regardless of whom they supported already knows exactly what they will do should their candidate not be the nominee. This includes "sitting it out" or even "voting for McCain" or even "writing in their candidates name".
The point is that they already knew.
And I suspect you already know what you will do too, regardless of your vote being courted.
Therefore, we don't need to. You already know what you will do in November. And that's cool.

If the rules had ben different, Obama would have used different strategies. As it was, his campaign was incredibly efficient, and obviously effective.
If FL and MI hadn't disenfranchised themselves by not playing by the established rules, then all candidates would have campaigned there and the primaries may have meant something. As it is, they are meaningless. However, don't be deluded into thinking that there won't be a compromise that allows their delegates to be seated.
You keep mentioning money, but you should consider the source of the money. Clinton raised a respectable amount, but the sources were overwhelmingly corporate bundlers and maxed out individuals. Obama's fundraising sources were mostly individuals donating small amounts, many for the first time.
More striking to me was the tone of the campaigns - Bill Clinton said it himself back when he was a candidate: "if one person is trying to scare you, and the other is trying to get you to think, which should you vote for?".
I do think that the lengthy primary has been good for two main reasons - almost every mudball that can be thrown at obama has been thrown (no doubt the Republican machine will dig up more, but no one can say he hasn't been well vetted). Also, the number people registering as Democrats is extremely encouraging for November.
