GOPers Tearing Each Other To Shreds In Primary, Improving Dem Chances Of Holding Key House Seat
The Republican primary for the swing House seat in Oregon just keeps getting nastier -- a development that's cheering national Dems, because it improves the Democrats' chances of holding on to this key seat that could otherwise be at some risk of slipping into Republican hands.
Check out this vicious new attack ad that businessman Mike Erickson is airing -- it hits back at former state Rep. Kevin Mannix for spreading a two-year old e-mail that accused Erickson of impregnating a younger woman and paying for her abortion:
If things continue at this rate, the eventual Democratic nominee will be up against a badly bloodied GOP opponent, making it more likely that national Dems will hold the open seat.

How about Robert Reich for veep?

I think he needs someone with strong ties to the military and some experience with the military.
It's needed.

He needs NO TIES to the military. That's the problem with this nation. How about someone with ties to a brain? Or someone with ties to alternative energy sources? Or someone with ties to education?

what's not to like?

Only downside is that the word "Republican" is never mentioned in this ad.
Too bad. I'd like the word "republican" to be associated with "smear", "reckless", "no evidence", etc, in the minds of every Oregon voter.

Wait a second.
Why does these two guys tearing each other apart help the Democrat win, but Hillary Clinton smearing Obama "makes him stronger" and "vets him"?
Seems to me that intra-party squabbles either help or hurt, and I think the evidence is clear that they hurt.
Another stupid Clinton talking point bites the dust.

I'm glad you're in charge of tracking Clinton talking points. Frankly, the ever-morphing drivel coming out of the mouths of the tragicomic triumvirate of Lanny, Terry and Howard makes my head spin.
And my stomach churn.
And sometimes I throw up in my mouth a little.

Depends in a way. When it goes ugly and the intra-party fights make candidates for the party toxic to their base, then it is a problem for that party. So this occurring to the GOP is great for the Dem side.
However, Clinton doing it to Obama (or vice-versa) is/would be a bad thing for Democrats and good for the GOP.

I finally saw the Olbermann vid where he just rips up Bush and his giving up golf for the war. Wow. Just wow. He was so visibly infuriated and disgusted and he said every single thing I'd like to say to Bush - it was a thing of beauty.
Keith has been a life raft these last years and I didn't think I could possibly love him any more. But that special comment was the epitome. It was perfect.

Oh, yeah. Keith was pissed!
And it's not good to piss off someone who has an hour of primetime air --- and a damned fine intellect --- at their disposal.
Especially when you're a buffoon like GWB.

D) Oregon television viewers AND Oregon as a whole (not to mention the nation and world at large) since it would assure that a Democrat retains Hooley's seat.
May 15, 2008 7:56 PM | Reply | Permalink
Oregonian here. Something else worth noting about these candidates. Mannix has run for statewide office four times (AG twice, governor twice) and lost every time--the last time, in the '06 governor's race, in the primary.
Erickson is a three-time loser. He's lost in state legislative races in '88 and '92, then lost against Darlene Hooley in '06. He was running in '08 before she dropped out.
Bottom line--these are weak candidates to begin with. And, with their history of losinig campaigns, it's not surprising they're killing each other in the primaries now. They have no clue how to win a campaign.

The Change That You Deserve
From the Chicago Tribune:
Black Screen.
Fade into:
Scene of a thin grey haired man standing in a green field. Behind him we can see the sun is rising.
"I got the change I deserved with GOP."
Cut to a small child, in a sun dress, who looks up at him and smiles.
"I was tired, listless. I had lost interest in my usual activities--creating false attacks, acting as if I had been unfairly attacked about issues created out of whole cloth, drawing specious historical parallels, fawning over ideologically bankrupt manufactured father figures. Sure, I sent emails claiming that Obama was a Muslim, but somehow...it had lost the spark, the enjoyment of everyday life."
Cut to a child who rides by on a bicycle, and throws a newspaper on the front porch.
"That's when I found GOP."
Cut to man rowing in a scull across a still river. He turns to the camera, smiles.
"In clinical studies, GOP has been found to increase aggressiveness in the absence of actual provocation in 8 out of 10 users. In most users, the desire to gleefully attack returns in 1 week. Full enthusiasm for invented ideas in two. "
Cut to image of porch swing.
"With GOP, my attention to minor distractions fully returned, until I was again building them into major accusations of flawed character. Once again, my intense focus on pins, buttons, sentences fragments and remote relationships as absolute indications of personal virtue and ability was at its peak. For an entire weekend, I could one again choose the right moment to accuse a candidate of treason without cause--when I was ready, when the time felt right".
Cut to a series of blurred images: long, stringy haired teens in torn jeans and ironic 80's t-shirts lounging by the Washington Monument; picture of John Kerry in a Swift Boat during Vietnam;
Eiffel Tower. Arugula on plate. During these images, rapid voiceover in female voice:
"GOP may cause monosyllabism, inability to consider two differing concepts at the same time, memory loss or inaccurate recall of recently and repeatedly presented intelligence information, focus on size of automobiles or koro, sequential nicknaming, knowing mischaracterization, hooting. If you have a desire to read the collected works of Ann Coulter that lasts longer than four hours, this may be a sign of a dangerous condition and you should contact your physician immediately."
Cut back to man standing in field. American flag waving in the distance behind him, below a risen sun. A woman walks up beside him, puts her arm around him, and smiles.
Man:
"So get the change that you deserve. Talk to your Doctor about GOP. Soon, you'll be walking by the homeless on the street again and saying "Let them get a job!"
Or better yet--let them get GOP."
Woman smiles.
Fade.

I've watched this thing three times and Erickson never denies he impregnated a young woman and paid for her abortion. And while he says Mannix has lied in OTHER ads, he never says he's lying in this one.

Anything that bloodies up Mannix, the twice defeated loser for the Governor's seat, the better. He is the thing even resembling a tent pole keeping the tattered remains of the Oregon GOP aloft at all these days. Mannix is also pushing a raft of shitty "law-an-order" ballot measures (increasing mandatory min. for non-violent property crimes for example).
So any political fratricidal fire that involves him is welcome news. The more toxic Mannix and all he touches becomes in the electorate the better it is for Oregonians.

Robert Hewson, that was near-perfect.
On the more serious note, as a Beaver state resident for the last 12 years, I get to agree heartily with both 21aruew and Lestadelc. Erikson does seem to be some kind of sleazeball -- has anybody investigated is business ? -- but Mannix is truly, in my limited experience of watching his various campaigns, an eager authoritarian/fascist/police stater with real potential to do serious damage to our and future generations.
The thought of him representing the 5th district just chills me.
Until "Tawnya" shows up in a courtroom in a Perry Mason moment, I feel completely historical-realist in judging that Erikson probably performed something like the caddish behavior alleged, but that no one can prove it.
