Poll: GOP Senator Barely Edging Challenger -- In Texas

In a sign that the Senate Republicans could be in danger in even states usually deemed safe for them, a new Rasmussen poll of Texas finds that Sen. John Cornyn (R) could very well have a race on his hands against Democrat Rick Noriega, a state Representative and Iraq War veteran:

Cornyn (R) 47%
Noriega (D) 43%

Sample size: 500 likely voters.
Margin of error: ±4%

Noriega will have his work cut out for him, though -- the latest FEC reports show Noriega with only about $300,000 cash on hand, compared to the incumbent's $8.6 million cash on hand.

Noriega's been running a great campaign. The fact he is even close to Cornyn is a sign of his strength.

This is as weak as Cornyn will ever get, this year. He's got a huge advantage given Texas and yada yada but it could happen. He's a Bush crony of the tallest order. It's all or nothing to get this sniveling waste of space out of the senate.

Anyone got an extra dime, send it Noriega's way. He's making good use of it.

Is Obama or Clinton helping him? He shouldn't be so low on cash.

He's had an intense viral campaign, but I think he's spending it hard. The primary battle alone was tough, and Cornyn is quite a brand in Texas.

He's been endorsed by groups that endorsed Obama, and there seems to be a natural link between the campaigns, but I haven't seen either candidate "help" him. Not sure why, really, or if they are holding off on that stuff until closer to november.

I'm really hopeful for this one. Cornyn is a freaking weasel Bush rubber stamp and he should be held accountable for his past, but of course, it's Texas. So....Noriega's got a shot, but it's gonna take some help. I think Obama will be good for him in the general. Texas really was coming around to him in a big way as the primary happened. Plus, Texas has an "outsider" streak that favors Obama.

Cornyn is the essence of a political hack. Before running for the Senate, he was a Texas Supreme Court justice then Texas AG who had piles of money backing him from the construction industry.

Not to mention the fact that, next to him, Hutchinson looks intelligent.

Ouch. Now that's rough.

As I posted before, a great blog covering this election and many of the other Dem races in Texas is www.burntorangereport.com.
Rick Noreiga is running a wonderful campaing so far but as the article states his campaign is coming from a position of being very much behind. His wife was recently elected to the Houston City council and Rick and her have been actively involved in the political scene for much of the past decade. They also stand out because of Rick's involvement as a Marine officer serving a tour over in Afghanistan and playing a role in the visability of veterans and the VA issues which affect many citizens of the state of Texas. If you have a dime it would do a lot of good to his campaignor the campaing of many other Dem's who are trying to overcome the sea change of Neo-Con policies that have wrecked this state. If you are looking for a blue-print of what Bush has done to the US, Texas provides a good sample of many of the maneuvers which have led to failed policies during this administration. These policies are many fo the same ones which have also failed this state and its citizens. Let's turn Texas Blue, not because democrats are somehow better, but mainly because the same failed policies which have led us to this point are actively being championed by the Republicans and also John Cornyn.

Well said...

One other thought: If Obama puts his stamp on Noriega and Texas goes McCain, which is of course highly possible, then voters will probably feel pretty good about also punching Noriega over Cornyn.

Texas is red, yes, but those same red voters tend to seek balance here and there too.

I can't wait to vote against Cornyn again. As one of his constituents, I get his newsletter every month where he proclaims his bipartisan efforts are being derailed by Democrats. How he does it with a straight face, I'll never know.

Donate to Noriega, he's worth every dime we can give him.

As the rest of the nation, I am confident that Texas voters have come a long way since they put this lying neocon, regressive jackass hack into power back in 2002. He's got the George Bush anchor tied to his ankle and down will he plunge with it.

Wonderful news. We can always do with a larger Senate majority.

I will contribute and hope that everybody will see a need to contribute something to the Democrats' campaigns, those who may need just a little financial help. As little as $10 dollars may help to save our democracy. I know of no better cause at this time in our history.
