GOP Congressman Airing Another Gay-Baiting Ad
Last week we brought you an amazing gay-baiting ad from Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO), a spot that attacked his Democratic opponent for supporting "San Francisco values" and even featuring gaudily-dressed people dancing to cheesy disco music.
Well, Graves is apparently undeterred by the outraged response that greeted his first effort, because now he's got another gay-baiting spot up on the air:
This new ad singles out support that former Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes has received from gay rights organizations, with a cover feature from a local gay newspaper, and accuses Barnes of having an agenda "to make same-sex marriage the law in Missouri."
Keep a close eye on this House race -- it's probably going to get even uglier.

Unfortunately, Graves is my congressman. He's been ineffectual and a Bush rubber-stamp for years. Definitely time for him to go. I think Kay can do it.

By the way, Graves uses Missouri's own version of Karl Rove, Jeff Roe, as his chief campaign strategist. The guy's a real piece of trash and won't hesitate to go immediately into the gutter in a campaign. Check out some of the links on a Google search for him. Real slime.

Graves isn't playing this ad in Kansas City. He is only showing it in some of the more rural cable markets.
I guess Graves is (1) afraid of being laughed at by those "Kansas City liberals" and (2) thinks the rural people are total rubes. Barnes ought to use her response ad again in the same media markets. It is a very good response. All she has to do is run it again shadowing Graves.
As to Jeff Roe being some kind of super duper political consultant, I understand from the letters to the Independence Examiner that Graves is taking a beating over the first ad. Doubling down is stupid. Never forget, time caught up with Karl Rove.

Not forgotten. It was actually why I wrote it in the first place. Upon this re-read, I definitely could have been much more clear. Thanks.

The only thing that ad did for me was make me want rainbow cake. Mmmmm. Cake.

It is pretty sad that such shameless attacks against gays is tolerated. This guy might as well be calling them "fags", and this is even worse, because he is actually attacking someone simply because they receive the support of organizations who are committed to gay rights, as if gays were fucking terrorists!
And aside from the offensiveness of it all, it is so blatantly obvious that the Republicans can't win on the issues that actually matter to people, so they have to use hate and bigotry as a political tool, and they use it unabashedly. It is just disgusting and pathetic, and I hope the voters see right through it and take this bastard down in November.

The only relevant question here is this: How wide is Graves' stance?

The transition from 70's disco to the suspenseful Jaws-in-the-water music is pretty funny. It's almost as if Carter were still president (not that I remember that period in the USA).

I think it would be endlessly fun to be on Barnes' campaign at this point. This boob Graves has done absolutely nothing as a member of Congress except go along with every backward, criminal and corrupt proposal of the Bush junta. The scathing attacks that would afford the Barnes campaign are endless particularly given his foolish use of gay marriage as an issue since MO (much to it's everlasting shame) passed a Constitutional amendment banning it back in 04. But because of that amendment to the state constitution it simply is not an issue at all for citizens in MO. Barnes is going to slaughter this hack in the fall.

Ah yes, gay-bashing: One of the last forms of socially acceptable bigotry.
I say let the GOP continue to cling to this issue and watch them continue to alienate more and more people - especially the younger generation.
Of course this still means we have to listen to this kind of hateful shit for a while.
Man-o-man, do my fellow breeders really embarrass and piss me off sometimes...

Unless you are fat, fat people are always open season! And retarded, that's so ingrained most people don't even realize they are bigoted (or that retarded people would mind.)

actually I don't think there are many forms of bigotry that have really been ruled out. Sometimes it feels like its open season on everyone including ourselves.

OK, rarely do I get annoyed, but WTF does "San Francisco Values" mean? Has anyone been there recently, do they live there? It is an amazing city, and hey, here's a tip, it is not the 1960's anymore. I am really sick of that phrase. It has to be one of the most gorgeous cities in the U.S. Maybe Graves should move out of his bubble a little and widen his travels.

Is is it just me or did it sound like they said "Gay" Barnes a few times in the ad?

Nothing highlights the bankruptcy of the GOP brand this year than this ad. Take a look also at Rep. Don Young's re-election statement, with its reference to a Congress run by "San Francisco liberals." Ever since Pelosi became speaker the GOP goons have been drooling - they think it's still 1984 and they can rail about "San Francisco" values. The fact that it's no longer working is driving them - and a case can be made for "literally" here - insane. So they'll keep on repeating it until it works. But it won't - because history shows that these types of campaigns only work in otherwise peaceful and prosperous times. The middle-class, fairly conservative SE Missouri voter might in fact worry about "San Francisco values" as long as everything else is otherwise OK, but if the economy has him upset, or she is worried that her son might get killed in Iraq, all bets are off.
I for one am extrememly comfortable with running a national campaign on Democratic solutions to end the war and fix the economy, and let the GOP keep the "they're going to make me eat Rice-a-Roni" theme. Given the last two special elections, with Dems winning in LA and MS, it seems to be working like a charm....

I was just in San Francisco a few weeks back -- nice town. Everybody was really good-looking and friendly, and there were far fewer desperate FOR SALE signs dotting the lawns. I drove around in a hybrid Civic with a friend who's a big alt-energy consultant there -- the brains behind lots of wind- and solar-power projects throughout the West. The ocean was pretty; the food was awesome.
Meanwhile, rural MO is still a hole.

Yes, Our "San Francisco Values" are what caused tourists to flock here and spend over 8 BILLION dollars last year. Perhaps they came only for the rainbow cake and disco parties.
Yes I am sure that rural Missouri is a real Paradise. Do they have a John Ashcroft Museum of Patriotism there yet?

I've been living in California since 2002. I'm going to have to say that you aren't doing justice to Missouri.
Branson, MO is a total tourist trap (ahem, vacation destination), but on a per-capita basis the amount of theaters & live shows puts SF to shame. (No judgements about quality attempted or implied...) They do have an "American Presidents Museum", by the way.
OK, that was a mixed effort at a defense. How about this:
I will say that if you haven't been to the Lake of the Ozarks, you can't judge rural Missouri's attractiveness. We had a couple very nice vacations there. More coastline than California, and the water's not nearly as cold - if I wanted to pick a state to have a summer vacation on the water, I'd pick Missouri ahead of California.
And... have you seen the polls of the attitudes of rural California? There's not much to differentiate between the two, other than that rural Missouri is green without having to import water into a desert.

The coast is defined as the part of the land adjoining or near the ocean. A coastline is properly a line on a map indicating the disposition of a coast, but the word is often used to refer to the coast itself. The adjective coastal describes something as being on, near to, or associated with a coast.
I am not trying to be a dick here, but in no way does Missouri have more coastline than California.
You may have more SHORE line. A shore or shoreline is the fringe of land at the edge of a large body of water, such as an ocean, sea, or lake.
Regs,
W.R.

No, there is no museum ...don't forget, we voted for "the dead guy" for Senate in 2000 (Mel Carnahan v John Ashcroft). Ashcroft then had nothing to do, so Bush made him AG.
Rural MO isn't that bad. It's actually very pretty.
Sam Graves, though, is a tool and must go.

I also thought it was odd that they transitioned from gay marriage to gas prices, but then it reminded me of something. Sadly, this may be a case of life horrifically imitating art... And that art is The Dead Milkmen song 'Stuart'...
Now that I think of it, many things that have happened in this election cycle and a few previous ones seem to remind me of that song. (sigh)
