Edwards: "Democratic Voters Have Made Their Choice, And So Have I"
In his endorsement speech, Edwards boiled it down:
"The reason I am here tonight is that the Democratic voters in America have made their choice, and so have I."
Edwards rattled through some of his familiar, if now distant, exhortations about "one America." In a rousing summation, he talked about the struggles of the poor, the difficulties of those coping without health insurance, and veterans who were returning home only to face neglect.
"No more in our America," Edwards concluded, "when Barack Obama is President of the United States of America!"
But most significantly, Edwards effectively said, "The Democrats have made their choice. The primary is over," precisely at a moment when the Hillary campaign is making the opposite case. You really couldn't imagine a moment more perfectly scripted for the Obama campaign, coming right after Obama's lopsided loss in West Virginia, than this.

Hillary,
Time to do it. Time to pass on your quest.
You'll look good doing it, Hillary--really!
The news cycle will say great things about you!
For a moment it will still be about you.
--okay, I can dream, can't I?

Edwards is a charlatan.
He had everyone believing he was a Howard Dean populist.
It first, took a look at his senate record, and laughed till I was rolling in the floor.
His senate record was a conservative and play-it-safe as it gets.
Kerry despised Edwards because instead of being a running mate, he only campaigned for himself. He refused to attack, which is what the VP candidate does.
Kerry told the NYT Edwards wanted him to lose so Edwards could run for president again.
He has such a bleeding heart for the poor that after Kerry lost, Edwards spent the last FOUR YEARS working on nothing more than getting himself elected president.
This operator spent an entire YEAR before the Iowa primary, campaigning in Iowa. He figured he'd have it made. People in Iowa thought the guy was a loony. He IS a loony!
And being obsessed with nothing more than himself, he waited to endorse until he could see who he thought would win.
The fact that Clinton's health and economic plan are far to the left of Obama's, and closer to Edwards didn't mean a thing.
Because Edwards does not care about the poor, the candidates or anything. He is a tight vortex of ambition.
Finally, and only recently, he ran down to Jimmy Carter's housing for the poor to "help out" ie give himself some creds.
At least the poor are finally getting a little something out of this shyster!

Doubtful, 2 Senators on the same ticket? I would expect a Governor, someone with executive experience, and someone who can deliver a state that Obama can't win, that's not Edwards...

There's not a chance in hell that we'll see an Obama-Edwards ticket in November.
Just another sore-loser Clintonian know-nothing knee-jerk reaction here.

This is actually a reply to "present"
Edwards came in second in the Iowa primaries. I don't think that demonstrates your first lame assertion, on the contrary, it disproves it entirely. The rest of your assertions are equally if not more lame.
Sour grapes?

I kept waiting for Edwards to say, "Mr. Obama, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!"
Okay, well it would have been funny to me.
Anyway, the real impact of this endorsement is the confirmation in the minds of Edwards voters who were on the fence of who they should go with. Edwards' pledged delegates should all fall in line behind Obama now, and that's big. This is MORE than enough to negate the impact of the West Virginia defeat, and it's going to be more than enough to narrow the gap in Kentucky (although I doubt it will be overcome).
All in all, THIS

The broadcast networks refused to fall for the Obama campaign's play to pre-empt Clinton's W.Va. victory party. Neither CBS nor NBC carried any of the Obama-Edwards appearance, although both showed extensive excerpts of their interviews with Clinton. ABC cut away from the Michigan rally seconds after Obama introduced Edwards. If Obama hoped for a big coup this evening, he didn't get it. Now let's see if Elizabeth shows up at a Clinton event.

Responding to myself, I held my reaction to Edwards' endorsement of Obama to let my passions cool overnight, however, as a former Edwards fan, I am very disappointed that he didn't remain neutral and let the process play out. He should have allowed Clinton to continue making her argument for only an additional 3 weeks. There was no downside risk to him in this at all. Especially considering that we are in the very late stages of the primary season, should Obama falter for any reason between now and the Denver convention, Edwards' endorsement will be seen as a failure of judgment, constricting whatever options he had open to help the party seniors to heal the divisions and achieve unity.
Therefore, I find myself reconsidering his late-emerging populism, and now see his sudden and unexpected endorsement move as purely serving his personal ambitions.

I think he did it precisely to take the air out of Hillary's win. As an Edward's supporter, myself, I was surprised that he did this, but I am hoping he got some concessions on policy, or perhaps an offer to be AG. If anyone can clean up the DoJ, it would be Edwards.
The fact that this announcement was timed like this makes me hope that Obama made some populist leaning concessions on policy, or the adoption of some of Edwards well thought out consumer oriented policies. That would rock, totally.
It's all good.

In case anyone hasn't noticed, one of TPM's esteemed trolls, fogu2, has been placing "."s after pro-Obama statements in other threads. As we all know, a "." signifies remembrance and respect of a recent death - the internet equivalent of "RIP".
So, to follow in the footsteps of fogu2, I suggest we all pay our respects to the most recent death in our Democratic Party, the death of Hillary Clinton's campaign.

No fuzzy math, RaeK... he's saying Obama can unite America and win the election.
And now, in the spirit of unity, I'm going to share with everyone some of your most eggregious quotes on TPM:
"ugly little fucker..."
"WOOPED OBAMA'S SKINNY ASS"
"you nimnuts"
"If Hillary isn't the nominee, VOTE McCain!"
"MCCAIN WILL CREAM YOU!!!!!!!!"
Hillary supporters, let this be a lesson... don't let yourself become something you hate.
Maybe it's just me, but somewhere along the line, Senator Clinton's campaign seems to have stopped functioning as an actual candidacy, sharing the same party and most of the same issues as Senator Obama's... and now it increasingly serves as a badge of pain, pride, entitlement, and self-victimization, frozen in time like a confederate flag on the back of a busted up pick-up truck.
There are lots of us out here who initially supported Gore, Edwards, Kucinich, etc., but we've moved on, to the point that most of us are pretty content with things as they stand. We want to concentrate on beating McCain.
You need to decide where *YOU* stand. Do you support the issues that Hillary Clinton does, and support her when she says that it would be foolish not to back the Democratic nominee... or do you support RaeK, John McCain, an end to Roe v. Wade, more war in Iraq, a possible war in Iran, and an end to any hope for affordable health insurance?
I mean, if you want that, register as a Republican, but if you don't, do what Hillary suggests and support the Democratic nominee.
Ask any of us who have already moved on from our candidate of choice... There is, in fact, life after the Democratic primaries, even if your candidate loses.

Wow, Mark - wonderful response. I was originally an Edwards supporter and I was disappointed when he dropped out, but I was able to look at the other candidates and select the one that I thought best represented my values and would do the most for this country. So I selected Obama. I truly believe that at least some Hillary supporters have been with her from the beginning and are personally and emotionally invested in her success or failure - if she fails, they fail. It is not about what's best for the country; it's about getting Hillary into the White House. Which is why at least some of them won't vote for Obama in the fall and will vote against their interests. Sad, really.

Obama: I did what your sister Hillary couldn't. I broke you and I beat you. It was Dean who told me about you. He's the prophet. He's the smart one. He knew what was there and he found me to take it out of the ground in all 50 states, and you know what the funny thing is? Listen... listen... listen... we put him in the DNC chair, votes in hand, just like that. He has his the party now. A prosperous little business. Three special election down-ticket races producing so far. Five delegates a day.
[RaeK Sunday cries]
Obama: Stop crying, you sniveling ass! Stop your nonsense. You're just the afterbirth, RaeK.
RaeK Sunday: No...
Obama: You slithered out of your Billary's filth.
RaeK Sunday: No.
Obama: They should have put you in a glass jar on a mantlepiece. Where were you when Dean was suckling at your party's base? Where were you? Who was nursing you, poor RaeK- one of Carvilles's sows? This land has been had. Nothing you can do about it. It's gone. It's had. You lose.
RaeK Sunday: If you just take the popular vote in Michigan, Barack...
Obama: Drainage! Drainage, RaeK, you boy. Drained dry. I'm so sorry. Here, if you have a milkshake, and I have a milkshake, and I have a straw. There it is, that's a straw, you see? You watching?. And my straw reaches acroooooooss the room, and starts to drink your milkshake... I... drink... your... milkshake!
[sucking sound]
Obama: I drink it up!
RaeK Sunday: Don't bully me, Barack!
[Obama roars and throws RaeK across the room]
Obama: Did you think your song and dance and your superstition would help you, RaeK? I am the Third Revolution! I am who the party has chosen!

In Pat Buchanan's own words:
He encouraged Nixon not to visit the widow of MLK, because it would:
"outrage many, many people who believe Dr. King was a fraud and a demagogue and perhaps worse.... Others consider him the Devil incarnate. Dr. King is one of the most divisive men in contemporary history."
"There is a legitimate grievance in my view of white working-class people that every time, on every issue, that the black militants loud-mouth it, we come up with more money.... If we can give 50 Phantoms to the Jews, and a multi-billion dollar welfare program for the blacks...why not help the Catholics save their collapsing school system."
On former Grand Wizard David Duke:
"Take a hard look at Duke's portfolio of winning issues and expropriate those not in conflict with GOP principles, [such as] reverse discrimination against white folks."
Trying to justify apartheid in South Africa, he denounced the notion that...
"white rule of a black majority is inherently wrong. Where did we get that idea? The Founding Fathers did not believe this."
On Hitler:
"an individual of great courage...Hitler's success was not based on his extraordinary gifts alone. His genius was an intuitive sense of the mushiness, the character flaws, the weakness masquerading as morality that was in the hearts of the statesmen who stood in his path."
On Jews being gassed to death from diesel exhaust fumes at Treblinka:
"Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody."
Ugly, hateful man.

Why that should be is kind of beyond me, since I hardly think we're so grand and all. I'm kind of tired of us, frankly.
We seem to get ourselves in charge of shit and just fuck it all up.
Anyway - it has always been outrageous that Buchanan has a public forum to spout his horrible shit from. He shouldn't be allowed in polite society, for all love.

"Rewarding the loser after getting crushed is not democracy."
Are you still stuck on one state, little man?! Because there have been lots of crushing contests in this election, and Obama has been on the winning side of most of them... which is a big part of why he has a clear electoral vote lead.
And since when does John Edwards not have the right to back his candidate of choice? That *IS* democracy!
"Those idiots cheering on Obama for not letting their votes count are pathetic."
Barack Obama most certainly wants the votes of those enthusiastic Obama supporters that gathered today in Michigan to count... whereas Hillary Clinton wants to disenfranchise ALL of them.
What is wrong with you? Are you pulling a RaeK too?
Democrats who believe in the issues we all stand for will follow Hillary's advice and won't sign on to join your little deadenders club... even if Rush Limbaugh put you up to it.

After all of your pro-Hillary bias this primary, its understandable that you are depressed at this stage of Hillary's candidacy.
Calling Edward's endorsement "shrewd" and imply that he is getting something in return, is just being a sore loser though.

What say the majority of former democratic presidential primary foes? I cannot think of one who has endorsed Hillary Clinton. Not one! And, if I am not mistaken, 2 out of 3 senate collegues are endorsing Barack Obama. What do you suppose the ratio is of those declared super delegates that have changed their endorsement from one candidate to another? I think Obama leads that 5:1. And we're not even scraping the surface...Ann Coulter, Michelle Malkin, we could go on and on. Because "news" needs to be entertaining, dontchaknow. And in modern America, watching nuts and people behaving badly, whether it be on cable "news" or "reality" TV, is what "entertainment" has become. It's all porn, it's all about watching and hearing people degrade themselves or other people. Americans these days are all a bunch of porn freaks.

It was actually quite nasty if you think about it, coming the day after a much-needed victory for Hillary. And at a time when by one measure Hillary is ahead in the popular vote it was perhaps, shall I say, hateful for him to say that America has made its choice. It doesn't increase my desire to vote for Obama in the slightest. In fact, if the election were tomorrow I hate to think of what I'd do. Good going, John Edwards. Way to bring Hillary supporters to Obama!

May 14, 2008 10:39 PM | Reply | Permalink
It wasn't nasty at all. We've listened to Hillary supporters justify the Kitchen Sink strategy as "nothing personal, just how politics is done."
This was perfect timing. It wasn't done out of spite, it was done to turn off the media attention to Hillary right after her one insignificant victory in a campaign that's already on life support. It was a highly effective maneuver. If she could have done it, she would have, in a heartbeat.
This is why Obama should be the nominee. Aside from leading in every category that counts towards a nomination, aside from having all of the super delegate defections moving in his direction, aside from raising vastly more money than Hillary and spending it wisely and not being in debt, and aside from bringing in what are likely several millions of new voters, he is just so much better at running a campaign than Hillary and her people.
She should have closed the deal back on Super Tuesday. That was the plan, wasn't it? Why couldn't she close the deal? Because she's surrounded by incompetents, that's why. Like Bush, she picked people for their loyalty, not for their expertise. It's another sign that he's ready for the Oval Office and she's not.

Well, it looks like Hillary can not even lead her own supporters.
Try a look-see on the Hillaryis44 or Taylor Marsh sites. Almost all of those commenters are vowing that, when Obama is the nominee, they will refuse to follow Hillary's leadership on supporting the Democrat. Some have already started a pro-McCain group among themselves.
I think it is fair to say that Hillary Clinton is the one who has fostered a cult. Listening to them, the only person or politician is America who could ever have the right qualities is Hillary Clinton, no other female is worthy, no male is worthy, etc.
It is like reading the expressions of steel-trap closed minds who somehow created a symbol they call Hillary, but the loyalty is to the symbol, not to the actual person of Hillary. So rigidly self-referencing are they that anyone who doesn't agree with them has to be dissed and thrown on a funeral pyre, and they are quite willing to throw Hillary herself there if she endorses Obama......in order to keep their created symbol intact.
For some time now, they express hate for Keith O., Russert, Maddox and any other media folks who would dare to be critical of their 'symbol'. You can imagine how they react to any SD's who endorse Obama. What is really bizarre is that they are reduced to following and sharing links to O'Reilly, Hannity, Hume, Buchanan, and Rush Limbaugh, for God's sake!
May 14, 2008 11:07 PM | Reply | Permalink
Well, you're describing Hillary's own narcissism to a T. It's like children taking after their parents.
However, what you are seeing expressed on those sites is only the most extreme of this type. They don't represent the majority of the public who voted for Hillary in the primary. I believe that one of the past surveys found that somewhere around 15% said that they'd vote for McCain if Hillary loses, and that's when she still seemed like she stood a chance. I think in the coming weeks, the polls will show solid support for Obama in the Party. But, there needs to be a good show of the Leaders of this Party coming together behind him. And Hillary will have to fall in line - and her support will have to more than tepid.

I had lost interest in my usual activities--creating false attacks, acting as if I had been unfairly attacked about issues created out of whole cloth, drawing specious historical parallels, fawning over ideologically bankrupt manufactured father figures. Sure, I sent emails claiming that Obama was a Muslim, but somehow...it had lost the spark, the enjoyment of everyday life."
Cut to a child who rides by on a bicycle, and throws a newspaper on the front porch.
"That's when I found GOP."
Cut to man rowing in a scull across a still river. He turns to the camera, smiles.
"In clinical studies, GOP has been found to increase aggressiveness in the absence of actual provocation in 8 out of 10 users. In most users, the desire to gleefully attack returns in 1 week. Full enthusiasm for invented ideas in two. "
Cut to image of porch swing.
"With GOP, my attention to minor distractions fully returned, until I was again building them into major accusations of flawed character. Once again, my intense focus on pins, buttons, sentences fragments and remote relationships as absolute indications of personal virtue and ability was at its peak. For an entire weekend, I could one again choose the right moment to accuse a candidate of treason without cause--when I was ready, when the time felt right".
Cut to a series of blurred images: long, stringy haired teens in torn jeans and ironic 80's t-shirts lounging by the Washington Monument; picture of John Kerry in a Swift Boat during Vietnam;
Eiffel Tower. Arugula on plate. During these images, rapid voiceover in female voice:
"GOP may cause monosyllabism, inability to consider two differing concepts at the same time, memory loss or inaccurate recall of recently and repeatedly presented intelligence information, focus on size of automobiles or koro, sequential nicknaming, hooting."
Cut back to man standing in field. American flag waving in the distance behind him, below a risen sun. A woman walks up beside him, puts her arm around him, and smiles.
Man:
"So get the change that you deserve. Talk to your Doctor about GOP. Soon, you'll be walking by the homeless on the street again and saying "Let them get a job!"
Or better yet--let them get GOP."
Woman smiles.
Fade.

The supremes are the big issue. We have some in their 80s barely hanging on.
But the Obamabots don't want us in the dem party anymore so I reregistered as undeclared.
I'll vote my conscience.

Of course we want you in the party. What makes you think otherwise?
Hillary and her supporters enjoyed a victory the other night. Why are Obama and his supporters not entitled to enjoy the victory that is an endorsement?
You are totally right that the Supreme Court is a huge issue in this election. I hope you note McCain's pledge in his recent speech to appoint "strict constructionists" to the court. That is a dog whistle meaning judges like Scalia and Thomas. If you like how Thomas treated Anita Hill on the job years ago and how Scalia helped hand the 2000 election to Bush, by all means vote for McCain. We hope your conscience will tell you otherwise.

oh boo f'n hoo, when it was clear my first and second choice were going nowhere, I didn't whine and moan about how "I wasn't wanted by the party."
Grow the hell up, for Christ's sake.
You're not (I assume) 8 years old.
This isn't Christmas.
And while you didn't get the toy you wanted, so what?
Suck it in and move on.
This election is not about the career ambitions of Hillary Clinton, and if you think it is, you need psychiatric help.

"Barack Obama passed off a reporter today in Michigan, and she seemed less than amused by his name for her.
"Hold on one second there, sweetie," he says.
The reporter signed off: "This sweetie never did get an answer to that question."
Just drink the kool aid sweetie.

Obama is a cool operator no doubt, but he's going to have to hold off flirting with sexy white reporters if he doesn't want to get the Harold Ford treatment.
There's plenty of time to drop his pants once he's in the Oval Office.

Spoken as only a true Bill Clinton supporter would say it, the voice of experience and approval.
Cheers! ;)

He left a long and sincere heartfelt apology on her answering machine that anyone with a computer can go listen to, before you start assuming things...unless of course your mind is too pre-biased to ever assume something innocent of the other candidate while yours continues to make verbal 'gaffes' which you defend all the time.

Way to go Gotalife - Keep shouting the turth and we will be set free from the Cool Aid.
Can I suggest we call this latest Obama disaster "SWEETIEGATE?"
Other suggestions:
"SWEETWATER"
Once again - Gotalife has shown his incredible ability to find the truly important issues that matter the most in this election.
Keep up the good work GL - I am watching your every move and promise to be right behind you - breathing heavily - until you stop posting.

You know in a way I find this election ironic in a couple of ways. One you constantly hear the pundits talk about Obama and the white versus the black vote, etc.
The thing here is that the demarcated system is working exactly the way it was written in 84 by no other than Harold Ickes of the Clinton campaign. The SD and proportional delegates system was written by Ickes because he was none other than Jessie Jackson’s campaign manager and this system was set because and for racism. So in effect the WV vote actually was /is the result of this rule in the party.
Then you look at the Obama 50 state strategy, I’m not sure if the old metrics applies to this campaign. I find this very Einstein-ian. A woman and a African American.
Go Obama, he will be our next PRESIDENT!!!!!
The times are changing…..for the better!

Edwards would make a fine AG. Clark or Webb seem to be much better ticket balancers for the VP slot.
Now would be a good time for Democrats to stop sniping at each other unless you want to live through Bush 2. Ignore the trolls. Let's look to the future.

Am I the only one who thinks that Clinton should start taking advice from Pyrrhus of Epirus?

Certainly a clear path to victory there.

Here's a not so little non-secret.
Richardson's, Edwards', and Clinton's endorsements will still not make Obama electable.
The nomination is all but over and so is the general.
We survived 8 years of Bush, we'll survive 4 of McCain.
And then, finally a Democrat will get into the White House.
