Brutal House GOP Primary Getting Nastier Everyday
Here at Election Central, we've been following the thrilling GOP primary for the Dem-held swing House seat in Oregon -- partly because it's a truly brutal affair, and partly because the worse it gets, the more likely it is Dems will hold the open seat.
Now the race has gotten even nastier.
Oregon Right to Life has released a statement calling for businessman Mike Erickson to quit the race, after his primary opponent spread a two-year old e-mail accusing Erickson of impregnating a younger woman and paying for her abortion. The statement contains a startling accusation: That when this matter first came up two years ago, Erickson privately admitted that key parts of the story were true.
"When we approached Mike about these allegations, he admitted giving her money and dropping her at a 'doctor's office.' He said he did not know she was getting an abortion," the statement reads. "Now, less than two years later, Mike Erickson issues a flat denial about everything, even the parts he openly admitted in our presence."
Erickson is now saying he dated the woman and gave her money to help with financial problems, but denies he ever knowingly paid for an abortion.
Calls placed to the Erickson campaign for further comment have not yet been returned.

Yeah, when it isn't you. I'm just glad Hillary has quited down a bit, because we've had our own snake biting at our Party's tail for months now.
I'm glad the Republicans have their own snake now.

Here's my wish today: as go the Republicans in Oregon, so go the Republicans nationwide in this election year.

Screw that.
As go the Republicans in Oregon, so goes the entire Republican Party for the rest of time.
May the Republican Party and its policies (but not the people, as there's always hope they may see the error of their ways) rot.

How times have changed!
In South Carolina, we still think fondly of an apocryphal tale recounted in the opening pages of Jack Bass' unauthorized biography of the late U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond.
The Court-house square in Edgefield, S.C., was where many "old timers" sat and talked every day. One regular said to the others, "Did you hear what Strom said the other day when his assistant told him there was a woman on the phone who wanted to talk to him about the 'bortion bill? Strom said, 'Tell her just send it to me and I'll pay it!'"

quit spamming and trying to stir up shit.
Hillary DEFENDED Obama against Bush and McCain's attacks, so there is NO reason to attack Hillary anymore.
The Primary is over, I can't believe it's the Obama supporters who can't shut up about Hillary.

Not "trying to stir up shit."
It was an admittedly ill-thought (and poorly executed) attempt to make the point that, with today's speech and presser, Obama has effectively taken the mantle of the nomination.
I, too, hope that we come together as a Party and realize we need Hillary's supporters to do so.
And I, too, thank Hillary for her coming to Obama's defense after yesterday's character assassination in the Knesset.
Perhaps I should have just said what I just said and not tried to be cute.
Please accept my sincere apologies for raising any hackles.

Obviously the Obama supporters here do not want any support for Obama from us. Being as nasty as they are, they are as good as suggesting that we join in to elect McCain and that would be a terrible result. But go ahead guys, in spite of the fact that Obama himself says to cool it. But then democrats always seem to have this tendency to shoot themselves in the foot.

With your last sentence, you've proved you are not a supporter of Senator Clinton, or a Democrat at all. Be honest when you post, please.

In this day of Republicans suggesting Dems are appeasers (Bush, McCain, et al), Republicans making assassination jokes about Dems (Huckabee) and Republicans continue to make this nation a more divided and more difficult place to raise a family (umm...all of them), Hillary Clinton is part of OUR family. We may disagree with the Hillbots, but she's one of us.
I thank Hillary Clinton for calling Bush out on his bullcrap statement.
I thank Hilalry Clinton for her service to this country.
While I support Obama for President, make no mistake that Hillary Clinton is a Democrat and her voice and her supporter's voices are welcome and needed.

Younger woman: how young? Under age? Is he denying it all now because he's more worried about winding up in prison or on a sex-offender register than he is about the end of his political career?

The Change That You Deserve
From the Chicago Tribune:
Black Screen.
Fade into:
Scene of a thin grey haired man standing in a green field. Behind him we can see the sun is rising.
"I got the change I deserved with GOP."
Cut to a small child, in a sun dress, who looks up at him and smiles.
"I was tired, listless. I had lost interest in my usual activities--creating false attacks, acting as if I had been unfairly attacked about issues created out of whole cloth, drawing specious historical parallels, fawning over ideologically bankrupt manufactured father figures. Sure, I sent emails claiming that Obama was a Muslim, but somehow...it had lost the spark, the enjoyment of everyday life."
Cut to a child who rides by on a bicycle, and throws a newspaper on the front porch.
"That's when I found GOP."
Cut to man rowing in a scull across a still river. He turns to the camera, smiles.
"In clinical studies, GOP has been found to increase aggressiveness in the absence of actual provocation in 8 out of 10 users. In most users, the desire to gleefully attack returns in 1 week. Full enthusiasm for invented ideas in two. "
Cut to image of porch swing.
"With GOP, my attention to minor distractions fully returned, until I was again building them into major accusations of flawed character. Once again, my intense focus on pins, buttons, sentences fragments and remote relationships as absolute indications of personal virtue and ability was at its peak. For an entire weekend, I could one again choose the right moment to accuse a candidate of treason without cause--when I was ready, when the time felt right".
Cut to a series of blurred images: long, stringy haired teens in torn jeans and ironic 80's t-shirts lounging by the Washington Monument; picture of John Kerry in a Swift Boat during Vietnam;
Eiffel Tower. Arugula on plate. During these images, rapid voiceover in female voice:
"GOP may cause monosyllabism, inability to consider two differing concepts at the same time, memory loss or inaccurate recall of recently and repeatedly presented intelligence information, focus on size of automobiles or koro, sequential nicknaming, knowing mischaracterization, hooting. If you have a desire to read the collected works of Ann Coulter that lasts longer than four hours, this may be a sign of a dangerous condition and you should contact your physician immediately."
Cut back to man standing in field. American flag waving in the distance behind him, below a risen sun. A woman walks up beside him, puts her arm around him, and smiles.
Man:
"So get the change that you deserve. Talk to your Doctor about GOP. Soon, you'll be walking by the homeless on the street again and saying "Let them get a job!"
Or better yet--let them get GOP."
Woman smiles.
Fade.

I was worried about this race a few weeks ago, when the Oregonian had a story out about the current fund raising numbers for the four major candidates in the race, which showed Mannix and Erickson way ahead of Schrader and Marks in cash on hand, with Schrader having spent "$34--and 37 cents--through the end of March."
I was seeing Erickson ads on TV every day then, about three or four weeks ago, and not a peep from either of the Dems running for that seat. Now all I see are Mannix ads attacking Erickson on the abortion, Erickson ads desperately trying to save his ass and repeating "raised taxes" over and over, still nothing from Marks, and Schrader ads which make him look very, very sane in comparison to the two GOP nutjobs.
I think we can hang on to this seat now. Schrader will probably need a bit of money still, but I'm not worried. Assuming he's the candidate, of course. If it's Marks, I might be a little worried.

Hee, hee, hee. I LOVE Erickson's explanation:
"Yes, I knew her. Yes, I dated her. Yes, I gave her some money. Yes, I drove her to a doctor's office. But it was a casual thing, and she said she was having financial problems, and just as I handed her $300 she asked me to drive her to a doctor's appointment, but I had no idea she was going to have an abortion."
Poor baby, just caught in the web of a wicked woman. It could happen to any young, rich, aspiring polititian.
Seriously, tho - what is it with guys (of any party) who think this stuff will never come out? Can you buy that kind of ego, or do you have to born that way?

I wish i could share Dave's optimism but i can't.
unfortunately, the disher of this dirt is Kevin Mannix and one of the most prominant republicans in the state. This truely is a swing district and he has wide name recognition while none of the democratic contenders are well known. Mannix also has several ballot initiatives this year, which boosts his profile even more.
this is going to be tough

I am certainly not an expert on Oregon politics, having only lived here for a few years, but I gather that Mannix is a perennial candidate who has a record of losing. I'm even less familiar with the politics of the northern part of the state, having moved up here from Douglas county just a few months ago. I've seen Mannix signs before, just driving I-5 up to Portland, but knew nothing about him until this election. Still, I think the more dirt he dishes in the primary, the more he hurts his general election chances.
We'll see which one comes out on top, but here's to hoping Erickson wins the primary for the GOP, and Schrader wins the Democratic primary. I'd be fine with either Marks or Schrader, but the fact that I'm actually seeing something from Schrader, and nothing from Marks, leads me to believe Schrader is the better candidate.
For the record, I'm in Wu's district, after having spent five years in DeFazio's.

Its up there with, " I puffed on a joint but didn't inhale" or "I did not have sex with that woman Monica Lewinsky" or even "It depends what your definition of the word is, is". Combination of the belief in the public as moron simpletons and lack of character.

SCMadden: but note that we can't be sure who is really an Obama supporter or a current (or previous) Clinton supporter. Too bad there are so many commenters you can't trust to be forthright.
I remember that George W. Bush was also accused of paying for an abortion. Without absolute proof, the charges don't seem to make much difference. For myself, the circumstances surrounding such an incident are all-important. That is, even when it's true.
