Attack Ad In Jersey Senate Primary: Lautenberg Made Fun Of A Woman's Age
You really have to watch this ad from Rep. Rob Andrews (D-NJ), the main primary challenger to Dem Senator Frank Lautenberg.
Andrews is running way behind in the polls, and now has an ad that is a very hard-hitting -- and perhaps desperate -- play for women voters. The message: Lautenberg ridiculed a female candidate's age.
The ad says that during Lautenberg's first campaign in 1982, he used "not so veiled language" to say "it's okay for a man to make fun of a woman's age," accusing Lautenberg of sexism in his race against GOP Congresswoman Millicent Fenwick:
Asked to cite a specific example of Lautenberg attacking Fenwick's gender, Andrews campaign manager Michael Murphy told Election Central, "I would not be able to say that he said, 'This person is incompetent to serve because she's a woman.'"
However, Murphy said of Lautenberg's age-based attacks used in that campaign: "It's virtually impossible, in projecting that message, to divorce that message from the fact that Millicent Fenwick was a woman."

"It's virtually impossible, in projecting that message, to divorce that message from the fact that Millicent Fenwick was a woman."
I don't get it. Is the implication that women are old?

This is a pretty pathetic ad. I think Lautenberg should respond by saying, "I know you are, but what am I?"

Wouldn't Lautenberg actually be a few weeks shy of his 91st birthday at the end of his next term? His date of birth is January 23, 1924.

I'm not crazy about Lautenberg[1], but that may be the lamest damn attack ad I've ever seen. The dude said something that might've been a bit inappropriate... 26 years ago?!
[1] He voted for the Military Commissions Act back in '06.

So Andrews made a hard-hitting ad that makes some suggestions that may not be factually accurate. Lautenberg has been doing that since day one in the campaign, even creating a faux Bush-Andrews website to push misinformation. Of course, Lautenberg has been ducking debates, avoiding campaigning in the state, and having his surrogates (Pallone, Roginsky) do his work for him. We haven't really had him working in or living in New Jersey for years.

Andrews co-sponsored the Iraq authorization resolution. He thinks the gas tax "holiday" is a great idea...
Enough said for us New Jersey folks. Andrews is toast.

So, wouldn't "It's hard when your own words come back to haunt you" be a more powerful attack if the ad actually used Lautenberg's own words rather than just paraphrasing them?

I don't know about anyone else living in the NY Region, but I've only seen Andrews ads: 2 very negative ads followed by a half-assed positive ad about debates where he chides Lautenberg for doing what he does in his own ad, and now this newest ad.
I've NEVER seen a Lautenberg ad. Has he even run a single one?
Andrews seems to be a slimy piece of work.

Rob Andrews, aside from running a lame ad campaign, is a pretty big moron. First, there's a pretty decent chance that Lautenberg will resign or die before his next term is up, and that there will be a Democratic governor in New Jersey who will have the chance to choose his successor. Before this campaign, Andrews would have had a solid claim that he should be appointed; now that he's shown that he's not a team player, and that (once again -- for people who remember the 1997 gubernatorial primary he lost to Jim McGreevey) he's a lousy state-wide campaigner, I don't see him getting that shot. Second, why does Andrews care so much about serving in the Senate anyway? He sits in a safe House district, has a lot of seniority for a relatively young guy, and is part of a solid and increasing Democratic majority in the House. If he worked hard in the House he could amass significant power and accomplish a great deal. Third, he apparently thinks a guy with zero name recognition in North Jersey (i.e., the part of the state with all the people) will have success running FROM THE RIGHT against a longtime Democratic incumbent in a Democratic primary in a Democratic year in an increasingly liberal state. Idiot.

Eric,
Please don't call New Jersey "Jersey" unless you plan on calling New York "York" or New Mexico "Mexico"
That is all, carry on.

To spell out what's going on in this particular ad, Andrews is saying that since Lautenberg used age as a campaign issue in 1982, its ok for Andrews to use age as a campaign issue in 2008.
What Andrews' ad says, however, appears to be hearsay. It doesn't cite when in 1982 Lautenberg used age, nor does it actually quote Lautenberg. What we in effect learn from the ad is that in the opinion of the Andrews campaign, Lautenberg used an age attack.
The one bona fide new fact from the ad is that the Andrews campaign attacks Lautenberg's age.
The ad demonstrates the character and thinking of an entire political campaign team. They think they can insult senior citizens to win an election. They obviously don't put enough effort into the thinking part, and I'm at a loss regarding their character.

now you know why the repuglitards don't do nuance
cuz they ain'y any good at it
their idea of a nuanced argument is to take an inane fact and try to stretch it to fit a campaign smear
somebody needs to grt this guy on camera explaining how this works
then ask him to define the word "appeasement"
we could do o whole series of reality-comedy shows just interveiwing repuglitards

It's not just this race, it's every one of them... even down to town councils!
Why is a tool like Scott Garrett still getting elected in my district??

The point of the ad isn't what he said 26 years ago about a female candidate...
the point of the ad is that Senator Frank Lautenberg is OLD.
Let's face it: age is going to play a huge role in the Presidential race, and like all things, this will filter down to local politics as well.
