Anti-War GOP Congressman Wins Renomination
In a sign that an anti-Iraq War position could now even be safe for Republicans, pro-withdrawal Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) was renominated last night over pro-war county commissioner Joe McLaughlin. With all counties reporting, Jones led by a margin of 59.5%-40.5%.
Of the three major anti-war Republicans in the House, only Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD) was defeated in his primary, while Jones and Ron Paul were able to win renomination to their seats.
And in yet another indication of a lack of enthusiasm among the GOP base, only about 38,000 total votes were cast in this safe GOP district, despite a contested gubernatorial primary that could have theoretically boosted turnout.

For what it's worth, note also that Obama handily won Cumberland County, NC, home of Fort Bragg. I'd like to see some info on how the military folks voted.

Everything I've seen indicated that the rank and file love Obama. I suspect the brass - not so much.
But I think he carries the enlisted personnel.

Any of the Hillary fans who think McCain is going to steamroll Obama should look at this win.
Its an Anti-war, Economy election.
Unfortunately for the Republicans, their candidate is a rich hawk.

Alright - we're toe to toe with the Repugs now (I hope Genghis isn't around - he finds it incivil that I call them that )
Let's go = McWar is 800 years old, has a terrible temper and not one idea that didn't come right from Bush.
I'm so ready.
I'm so not afraid of the stupid Repugs.
I cannot wait! Let's go get them right now!!!!!!!1

Wow - thank god!
Tena, I was beside myself last night - my hubby and I hit the triumvirate: a great night for Obama, a Red Sox win, and a Celtics win. Oh, and the Carmina Burana concert we performed in last night was amazing!!! It's a good day LOL! ;)

You really did have the day! I love the Carmina Burana. I used to sing in a garage band, wonder if I could get in? (I can tell you - no. A garage band is the only vehicle that will drown me out enough so that you can listen. LOL!)
I've felt this coming and I've been in such a good mood for days that it could hardly even get better last night.
Sometime around the end of last week I just started feeling like it was over for real.
And it is!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if they will try to find a more on the fence Republican (war wise) to truck out as VP?

My issue is:
Why is this a safe seat for the Republicants? Why are there any safe seats for the monolithic tribute to fascist plutocracy?
I celebrate the anti-occupation POV . . . But there is more to politics in this time we live in.

I've lived in and around the North Carolina 3rd; Walter B. Jones Sr. was a conservative Democrat who represented the 1st district from '65 until his death in '92; His son originally ran for his father's old seat and after his defeat, he ran the next time around for a neighboring district and have represented them since '95.
The Jones name is old North Carolina politics and though some of his constituents may have a problem with his social conservatism and it was easy to make fun of "freedom fries", he brings home the bacon and enjoys universal name recognition. He will be facing a Democratic challenger, Craig Weber, who ran against Jones in '06 and of course I'd probably vote for the Dem, if I were still there, but he's running against a lot of history and there's a whole "coast vs. farm country" element to the race, so with Iraq essentially off the table, the challenger is facing a real uphill fight.
