Tonight On Colbert: Obama, Clinton and Edwards
Stephen Colbert had three very special guests tonight: Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards. Clinton and Edwards were in the studio, and Obama appeared via satellite.
The show broadcasts tonight at 11:30 p.m. ET, so here's a thread for you to share your views on the how the two candidates and one ex-candidate came off.

What? He appeared by satellite and not in person? He must be in San Francisco with effete rich people who hate America and long for the days of bombing the Pentagon.

FRANK INTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO REMOVE FEDERAL PENALTIES ON PERSONAL MARIJUANA USE
Congressman Also Files Bill Permitting Medical Use of Marijuana in States that Choose to Allow it with Doctor’s Recommendation
Thank you Barney Frank. This is SO OVER DUE.
April 17, 2008 11:26 PM | Reply | Permalink
Hardly anyone gets federal penalties for marijuana use (except in a few extreme cases in states where medical marijuana is legal, and they feel they need to make an 'example' out of handful of people).
So, this law would not change much, since most enforcement is done by the state.
Still a good thing, though.

Yeah, Clinton got her air time but the episode's been very kind to Obama. They've got Rep. Patrick Murphy (only member of congress to serve in Iraq) on and he just talked about why he supports Obama.

I think they were all pretty good, Edwards definitely the best. Hillary was the least funny, but it was a good analogy for her message of preparedness and problem solving. Obama was funnier and came across well, but the fact that he had to devote his appearance to putting distractions 'on notice', implies that he's worried that they're hurting him.
Edwards also gave Hillary's healthcare plan a huge plug, saying that *every* American needed to be covered - got a big cheer as well.

Empty Suit. Really Louisville?
If your party manages to take the White House this fall, democrats will only have an empty suit to thank for the hundreds of thousands, if not millions of new registered voters.
Summarily, If your candidate of choice is losing to an "empty suit," then I think it speaks volumes about the lack of substance (soullessness) plaguing the their campaign.
I prefer to vote democrat this time around, but elements of your party is making it harder to discern between mine and yours.
April 18, 2008 12:16 AM | Reply | Permalink
Well blue....it comes down to Registered Voters and Likely Voters. The problem with large Primary turnouts is that they never materialize in the fall. There will be 50% of the electorate out on the first tuesday in November. That much I can set my watch to. So, before it happens I don't think I am going to thank all the new registered voters. If they show....great! But, experience tells me that they won't.
April 18, 2008 12:22 AM | Reply | Permalink
The problem with Louisville is that he's kinda stuck in the past, reading from the playbook of the 90s, and wondering why it isn't working and that his girl is going down in flames.

Some Clinton advisers also said that the focus on Mr. Obama’s “guns or religion” comment was a way to put him on the spot with so-called values voters — in part to offset Mrs. Clinton’s baggage in this area. According to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll, conducted March 28-April 2 with 1,196 registered voters nationwide, 60 percent of them believe Mrs. Clinton shared the values that most Americans tried to live by, and 34 percent did not. Both Mr. Obama and Mr. McCain fared better, with Mr. Obama performing best — 70 percent said he shared those values, and 21 percent said he did not.

Its simple.....well actually very complicated...but the beginning thought process is simple.
We the people(most of us anyway) live in a Common Sense mentality and world. Its about time that Americans in America started demanding the same from our Media, Politicians, Government, Schools and Companies.

To be fair, Obama played it pretty straight.
Edwards was the strangest, because he isolated between serious issues and... jet skis.

I loved Edwards last night too (and I had no idea any of them was going to be on because I only tuned into to see Colbert's last night here in Philly), but am I the only one who feels he missed his opportunity to make a "courageous" endorsement?
If he waits until after the PA primary, what risk is he taking exactly? If Obama is able to avoid a huge loss here, isn't his nomination pretty well a done deal? Why would Edwards risk alienating him by endorsing Clinton at that point?

The numbers and the states are basically correct. Besides the colors are there any states there that Obama would win over McCain? They even give Obama Colorado which....is quite a stretch.

Some of the poll data however is over a month old.
How accurate is a national poll when the data isn't consistent?
It paints a nice picture at first glance, but it's totally useless for McCain, Obama and McCain.
I think the political reality is that whoever wins the Democratic nomination, we're going to need to unite to beat McCain.
As Clinton said in the debate, she'd do everything she can to make sure a Democrat wins the White House.
I find that honorable and I will match her pledge. Should she win, I gladly vote for her.
...but I still hope Obama wins.

I thought all three of them did just fine. They played along with the basic feel of the program (especially their takes on "the Word" and putting political distractions "on Notice" -- I'm surprised Clinton wasn't asked to give a tip of the hat or a wag of the finger to anyone). I see nothing out of character about going from the serious debate to laughing the next night; in fact, it's human and healing. One of the best laughs of my life came during my dad's memorial service (after the emotional exhaustion of the wake and funeral).
Colbert did the best, however. You can tell that winning that Peabody gave him even more cred than he'd gotten--which is quite a bit of cred, indeed.

Yes, good appearance by Clinton, Edwards was almost overplayed. Obama's "distractions" was rather negative in comparison to the aspirations and goals offered by Clinton and Edwards. Even in a skit he's whining about questions.

well, none could have been as clever as myself, having appeared on The Daily Show three times. Brilliant, cosmopolitan, great fuck, and yes, maybe the funniest, wittiest person alive. Yep, that would be me.
You know, I want to make one thing clear. I don't believe it is impossible that Obama is qualified and capable. I just see zero evidence so far that he is. That's one of the big problems with affirmative action and treating moderately articulate black people as marvels: maybe they're empty suits, maybe they're not, but there's no real standard by which to measure.

well, yes, exactly, a system that promotes people without regard to ability gives no clear standard to evaluate their capabilities. And I observed in my law skool, it produces "professors" who publish incredibly shoddy "scholarship" but nobody is willing to state the obvious: these are mediocrities who are there as window dressing. I'm glad you're getting the point.
Here in Europe, there are no "diversity committees" and racial or gender quotas, and I can assume all of my colleagues are competent and smart.
