SEIU Hits Airwaves For Obama In Indiana

Here's a first look at a new ad the SEIU is going to run in Indiana on behalf of Barack Obama.

An SEIU spokesperson confirms the ad is running statewide.

The ad doesn't mention Hillary, but the narrator implicitly attacks her vote for the Iraq War: "Only one candidate opposed this war from the start -- Barack Obama."

Finally!

And a Hillary 527 is running a negative attack ad...

Hey Indiana, see the difference?

user-pic

No doubt.

Hillary is so full of it. Did you hear the one about the plant in Indiana closing that Hillary blamed on Dubya? Turns out it was actually Bill who made it happen.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/227/story/35337.html

INDIANAPOLIS — It's a story Hillary Clinton loves to tell, about how the Chinese government bought a good American company in Indiana, laid off all its workers and moved its critical defense technology work to China.

And it's a story with a dramatic, political ending. Republican President George W. Bush could have stopped it, but didn't.

If she were president, she says, she'd fight to protect those jobs. It's just the kind of talk that's helping her win support form working-class Democrats worried about jobs and paychecks, not to mention their country's security.

What Clinton never tells in the oft-repeated tale is the role prominent Democrats played in selling the company and its technology to the Chinese. She never mentions that big-time Democratic contributor George Soros helped put together the deal to sell the company, or that the sale was approved by the administration of her husband. "Hillary Clinton must have been hoping we Hoosiers have short memories," Ed Dixon of Valparaiso said in a letter to a local newspaper after a recent Clinton visit. "Her husband was president at the time and allowed this to happen."

"They would have us believe Bush was behind this sale," added Fred Sliger of Valparaiso in another letter, "when in fact the Clinton administration rubber-stamped this along with the sale of numerous other high-tech secrets to the Chinese. …Let's get the facts straight."

I gotta go with the Clintons on this attack. The approvals under the Clinton administration included promises to keep plant in the U.S.; this is a valid attack on the Bush administration. Also it sounds like they're trying to make this another George Soros conspiracy theory.

Yes, but they knew those promises were weak when they decided to take those jobs away from the people of Indiana and give them away to who knows where.

The main point being, they knew they were signing off on taking jobs away from Indiana, as there was no requirement that they stay there in a place already experiencing difficult economic problems.

Ah, The Great Speech, the Stuff of Legends!

Anyone have a video of it, or an account of The Great Speech in a Chicago newspaper? Somebody must have written about The Great Speech? We know he has "reenacted" portions of it, surely there must be a contemporaneous account of it?

Here you go, smartie. 2 accounts from 2 different papers.

300 attend rally against Iraq war:

The Rev. Jesse Jackson called on the Bush administration Wednesday to "lead the world, not rule it" at a downtown rally protesting plans for war against Iraq. State Sen. Barak Obama, a Chicago Democrat; the Rev. Paul Rutgers, chairman of the Council of Religious Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago; and former state Sen. Jesus Garcia of Chicago, among others, joined Jackson in urging the federal government to avoid a military strike against Iraq. "While we're looking at Saddam Hussein, we're taking attention away from our economic problems," Jackson said, pointing to the recent stock market plunge and the $2 billion national deficit. Obama, along with several of the speakers, acknowledged the necessity of war in some cases, but only as a last resort. "I don't oppose all war; I oppose dumb war," Obama said. He also said a war in Iraq based on passion and politics would provoke the worst impulses of the Arab world. Police estimated 300 people attended the event.

War With Iraq Undermines U.N.
Chinta Strausberg. Chicago Defender. Chicago, Ill.: Oct 3, 2002. pg. 1

Nearly 3,000 people attended an anti-Iraq war rally Wednesday where the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. and Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D-13th) warned the Bush administration that a war against Iraq undermines U.N. protocol.

Held at the Federal Plaza, 230 S. Dearborn, the anti-war protesters urged Congress not to give Bush "a blank check" to declare war on Iraq. It is a war federal officials admit will cost U.S. taxpayers more than $9 billion a month to wage.

The rally, one of many scheduled through November, comes on the heels of Bush and House leaders agreeing on a resolution on how to deal with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein "diplomatically if we can, militarily if we must."

Bush said the U.S. may not be able to avoid a war and former President Bill Clinton is urging the UN to "call Saddam Hussein's bluff" with tough new inspections demands.

Joining Jackson, who late Wednesday night spoke at Northwestern University kicking off a three-day tour around Illinois pushing voter registration, were former Illinois Senator Jesus Garcia, Rep. Julia Hamos (D-Evanston) and many others.

With less than five weeks before the Nov. 5th election, Jackson and other Democrats said voters will be watching the economic downturn that is costing U.S. income, security, trillions of dollars in deficit and about 2 million jobs and a drop in consumer confidence.

"Bush's idea of blessing an assassination is a very dangerous message to send around the world," Jackson told the Chicago Defender.

"The preemptive strike idea undermines the UN charter, which is the way to resolve conflict and reduce wars. There is no compelling reason to confront Iraq except oil, defense contracts and polls," said Jackson.

The protesters also read a letter from Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) in support of the protest. The senator admitted he is facing one of the most difficult votes in his 20-year career -- whether to vote in favor or against war with Iraq.

"When the Senate votes this week on President Bush's resolution to wage war against Iraq with preemptive force, I will vote no," wrote Durbin.

"I do not believe the Bush administration has answered one simple question: Why now? Why now, when we have not given the United Nations ample time to prove their relevance in the international community by enforcing weapons inspections?

"Why now, when we do not have allies or a coalition behind us? Why now, when we are still engaged in a costly and time consuming nation building effort in Afghanistan?

"I think his motive is a diversion from the economic agenda. Over the past 2.5 years, we've lost 2.5 million jobs. We have corporate corruption that is abounding," Jackson said.

"We've gone from a $1.5 trillion surplus to a $2.5 billion deficit. The range of economic items are being lost like they are focusing on Saddam," warned Jackson.

He said Bush "does not deserve congressional support because he has not made a compelling case to fight a war."

You got me. They do mention one sentence from Obama, on page 8 in the Arlington Heights Herald.

There are many.

Here ya go:

The trolls are ignoring his judgement and credibility was absolutely destroyed yesterday.

Go figure.

Us trolls and the superdelegates, apparently.

Goatlove, if I knew you were going to link to a nonsensical rant of yours instead of something meaningful, I wouldn't have bothered clicking the link.

Keep dreaming, 'lil dreamer. You'll be put out of our misery soon enough, because no matter whether Obama wins or loses in the upcoming states, one thing is clear -- he's going to get *MORE* than enough delegates to win.

but the narrator implicitly attacks her vote for the Iraq War:

No, Greg, it is merely a "contrast" ad.

Correction: It's a "soft, fluffy ad with slightly sharp edges" and also buoyed by the Bounce dryer sheet teddy bear.

Yep, that's our Greg, parsing for Hillary. What a wimp !

Billary

NJ poll shows Obama on Top Over Hillary:

According to PolitickerNJ.com, a new Monmouth University/Gannett poll shows that Barack Obama is now more popular among Democrats and independents in New Jersey. The poll gives Obama a 58%-27% favorable unfavorable rating while Clinton has a 46%-43% rating. Also according to PolitickerNJ.com, the poll shows that by a 45%-38% margin, "more New Jersey and Democrat-leaning independents" (however that's defined) would rather see Obama win the nomination.

Against McCain, Obama wins 56%-32% and Clinton wins 52%-38%.

Well done!

SEIU also has an ad ripping McSame on healthcare and shows the footage of his love-in with Bush.

Billary
Voted for no child left behind.
Billary and McCain now want a gas tax holiday, which in turn will put tens of thousand of more people out of work (highway workers), as well as cause further neglect for our infrastructure.

And the ad never mentions Hillary.....

But don't worry, every single post on any subject at EC will at least mention Hillary, even when they don't follow the more common EC pattern of also repeating the Clinton talking points. Just noting this, because any editorializing on this ad could just as well have referenced Obama on the Iraq situation in comparison to McCain's position.

I am so looking forward to the end of the primary because I am sick of the grasping narcissism inhering in this focus whereby all topics have to swirl around or pivot back to Hillary Clinton. She has flubbed her time on the stage, she has lost the nomination and yet here she still is, playing mind games, stealing the time and stalling the momentum our party needs for the general election.

user-pic

You caught that, too? I laughed so hard thinking, "Why does it have to be about Clinton? That could have been a jab at McCain!".

Well, to be fair, she does have help from the Republicans and the media... and TPM, even, who fails to point out on a regular basis that she has no reasonable mathematical chance of winning.

THIS IS GREAT NEWS! FOR HILLARY!!

"Sen. Daniel Inouye (D) is headlining a fundraiser (sub.req.) for corruption-probe-hobbled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens (R)."

Ah, Obama's unity.

You're nuts. What does Obama have to do with this?

Do I have to spell everything out for you?

Can you people not think with the kool aid infesting your minds?

That kool aid was poisoned by Wright.

Obama's unity gives the Senate cover for voting and fund raising with the gop. It is one party not two.

user-pic

What exactly did you spell out?

KWIJIBO?

user-pic

Wait, I thought Obama was a far left liberal and now he has somehow gotten the Dems to raise money for the GOP? Wow, I just can't keep my accusations straight anymore.

"It is one party not two."

Said by someone who's a member of the Karl Rove wing of the Democratic Party.

Get a life, goatlove.

He's not *just* nuts, he's cuckoo for Clinton Nuts!

Certifiable, grade-A loonytunes territory.

Don't know if it has any bearing upon your nonsensical comment, but Inouye happens to be one of Clinton's SDs.

user-pic

Weren't you the one crowing about Clinton's "bipartisanship" of working with the GOP? You quote criminals like Kristol and Scarborough and the fact that a Clinton superdelegate is hosting a fundraiser for Sen. Hulk is a problem for Obama. Man, you really are a mockery of yourself.

Sen. Daniel Inouye was a Hillary supporter, goatlove.

Seems to me that he's only doing what Hillary did for Lieberman and McCain, dontchathink?!

Where's the article on the shark attack in Mexico??? That's two now, and it's still only April. I think we all know this is going to be huge, and I'd like to see TPM get ahead of the curve on it. This site doesn't have to be all about election coverage. Personally, I could use some talking points on how to repel a shark attack. Also, feel free to use "SUMMER OF THE SHARK STRIKES BACK," if you'd like.

user-pic

LOL...I think the title of Election Central pretty much ensures that this segment of the site will be about the election.

But the shark thing actually made me laugh. While reading the paper this morning, I saw a blurb on one side talking about the shark attack. Then I went back to the beginning of the group of blurbs. The second one down had the headline "Drug trafficker (or something) and two bodyguards killed." The first thing I thought was, "Damn, those sharks are killing everyone!" Then I remembered to have some coffee and reread the paper.

Hey Greg:

What do you think of the story that Josh posted on the front-page about the voter group making confusing calls to NC voters?

http://southernstudies.org/facingsouth/2008/04/facing-south-exclusive-dc-nonprofit.asp

That group has John Podesta on board, and Maggie Williams as well.

user-pic

The Clinton's campaign hasn't had a conference call on it, so we'll find out once they do...if they do.

It's about time! Obama should run tough ads like this. Not too negative, but punchy and clear.

Hey gotalife...Inouye endorsed Hillary, Idiot.
Abercombie Conressman endorsed Obama
Hirono Congress undecided
Akaka Undecided...
Get your story straight!

THAT'S THE AD?? 500k FOR THAT?

HAHAHAHAHA

what a lame ad. Everyone KNOWS Obama wasn't in the senate when the Iraq vote came up.

NOBODY can say what his vote woulda been. He had rotating websites on the war in the past because he couldn't make up his mind about it. He wasn't in the senate, had no access to the intelligence and his argument is therefore ALL 100% BULLSHIT!

This is the numbnuts who voted present 130 times...
the numbnuts who also claimed he pushed the wrong button 5 times....
I could go on. He's as lame and as much a FRAUD as this dumbass ad you people spent your money on!

It won't do him any good. He's losing now.

Rae

Obama is the only candidate interested in doing the most good for the greatest number of Americans. The Bush/McCain/Clinton Axis is owned by their wealthy clients. Clinton is obviously a hack who cares nothing about the November election and McCain is obviously suffering from early onset dementia. Sad. It's Obama who deserves our vote.

user-pic

I wish they would run an ad with information like this:

Scowcroft, a former national security adviser said he agrees with the position, stated by Sen. Barack Obama, that the U.S. would benefit from having direct talks with the leaders of its most distrusted adversaries.,"Absolutely," said Scowcroft, when asked by whether he thought the next president should meet with the likes of Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "It's hard to make things better if you don't talk. Scowcroft is a former Air Force general who is widely considered to be one of the preeminent foreign policy minds in the United States.

in contrast

Iran has complained to the UN about Hillary's remark that in retaliation to an attack on Israel she would obliterate Iran. She isn"t even the Democratic party nominee and she is rattling sabers -- a strategy of belligerent non-communication with key world players. We have seen for eight years how that has worked.
