Republicans Lose Best Possible Candidate In New Jersey Senate Race

New Jersey Republicans really can't catch a break. Just as it had seemed like biotech executive John Crowley was on the verge of launching a campaign for the U.S. Senate — thus rescuing the state GOP from a truly odd bunch of candidates — Crowley has instead decided that he's not running.

The state Democratic machinery may be on the verge of tearing itself apart, with a potentially competitive primary race pitting 84-year old incumbent Frank Lautenberg against South Jersey Congressman Rob Andrews. But without a significant Republican in the race, this seat will stay in the safe Dem category no matter how the primary turns out.

All I can do is laugh.

And anecdotally, this points to something Repugs have told me recently - those who aren't rabid, but actually have some kind of brain are convinced that the next president is going to be a Democrat.

When I caucused for Obama in Texas, there were close to a thousand of us there to caucus - it was roughly 2-1 in favor of Obama. But we were all there for a Democrat.

Out in the hall the Repugs were trying to hold a meeting - all 10 of them. I could tell by the looks on their faces that they were seeing their future writ large. LOL!

Every time I see a reference to this guy, as in the "Biotech Exec Expected To Announce GOP Candidacy In NJ Senate Race" headline, I read it as "Biotch Exececutive." If there were a gangsta-rap version of TPM, that's how it would be written.

I can't understand why the Repugs can't attract worthy candidates. They have the "Straight Talk" express on the top of the ticket, but can't find candidates for national office? Doesn't sound to me that McSame has any coat tails to hang on to. Truly, I wouldn't be surprised if McSame doesn't even has a coat(think Emperors(King GeorgeI)new clothes)!

I do not blame a prominent Republican for choosing not to run. Any Republican that runs will have a sever disadvantage on funding and be branded with the Bush brand. As such, it would make sense for a Republican to opt out of this election cycle as many of their staunches supporters have chosen to do.

I agree. There is also the factor of the GOP caught in a transitional period. Until the party has re-defined itself, no rational person would put themselves through a losing campaign.

The lingering question is, What will that re-definition look like? Will the GOP move even further to the rabid right or will it return to its better, historical self as exemplified by such giants as Dwight Eisenhower, Mary Chase Smith and Jacob Javits?

Dawg, there is rap speak generating engine that you can feed any web page into and have it translated into gangsta.

This is a gravatar test - I dragged my old one into the box and it sure doesn't look like it transferred well. I may have to go find another.

@idiotic,
This is a good news for Fred Thomson.
(sorry, couldn't help it).

back in december i happened to catch the last ten minutes or so of a "lesser known presidential candidates" debate on cspan.

i thought i was going to be hearing some of the marginalized but saner voices being ignored by the msm, so it piqued my interest.

instead i was treated to nothing more than a tired rehash of republican soundbites from about ten z-list giulianis, tancredos and huckabees i'd never heard of.

i was amused only because the "debate" seemed to indicate, if the last ten minutes were representative of the entire program, just how far out of orbit the party as a whole has become. is this really all they have to offer? if so, the insanity truly runs deep. one candidate insisted that as president, once he'd gotten the country back on track following the bible, we'd see results in just 60 days! (this candidate seemed to make sure to mention the bible every chance he got.)

what a sad end to an entire party, but i have no tears for rubbish.

Who is this John Crowley, anyway? I'd never heard of him until 24 hours ago and now that he's not going to run, I'm sure I'll forget him within the next 24. Why not run Kean Jr. again? What about Steve Forbes or Christie Whitman, just to name a couple of people off the top of my head. And what's with all of these octagenarians in the Senate? There should be a mandatory retirement age. Even for Vatican cardinals it's 75.

Given that I think that McCain is too old to be the POTUS, I can't really say that Lautenberg isn't too old to continue as a senator.

Why is a primary tantamount to the Dems tearing themself apart? Perhaps the party machinery in that state will go at it. But incumbancy does not mean coronation. People are allowed to run. Wish it would happen far more often.
