Obama Up On The Air In West Virginia -- And Everywhere Else, Too

The Obama campaign is clearly determined to use their financial advantage over Hillary Clinton by flooding the airwaves in remaining states well in advance of their votes.

Obama has this new ad in West Virginia, in which he promises to get to work on lowering gas prices and creating an overall better energy policy:

The one poll out so far in this particular state showed Obama losing by a 2-1 margin. As such, he needs to seriously narrow the gap in time for the May 13 primary, assuming the race is still going after the May 6 contests in Indiana and North Carolina.

Separately, the Obama campaign confirms to us that they are going up on the air in all the remaining states, as first reported by The Page.

Bankrupting Clinton is genius! Spread her limited resources as thin as possible... and she'll be forced to get out.

He doesn't have to narrow his margin there, the math is more than impossible for Hillary no matter what. It would be nice, but it is in no way necessary for him to close the gap in WV or KY.

user-pic

Yep, he is probably doing this as much for the general election as he is for the primary. Building brand name recognition and a grassroots organization in every state before the general election even starts is just plain smart.

Another unbiased opinion from Eric "quite rightly" Kleefeld.

user-pic

He can't win KY and he probably can't win WV either. With his increased focus on McCain, the DNC deal, and his ad buys in all the remaining states, I'm thinking that even though Clinton appears to be taking this thing to the convention, the Obama campaign has decided to start the GE race against McCain now. I think it's a pretty good move...prove to the supers that he can compete on the national level, that he can go toe-to-toe with McCain, show's that he's ready and willing to move to the big dance today. Heck, he's got the cash to do it...why not? As for his personal time, he can focus all of that on NC and IN.

user-pic

Yes, I think Obama's best bet now is to ignore Hillary, like she's the crazy aunt in the attic.

Here's an article that's worth reading:

Maybe the campaign isn't just clearly determined on using its financial advantage...maybe the campaign wants to actually compete in all the states that are left.

And, get his ground organization for the general revved up.

Well, what the heck is he going to do with all that money?

If I were Barack Obama I'd use it to...

...well, to be honest, I'd use it to build a rampaging army of killbots, but that's why Obama's running for President and I'm not.

Make sure they don't have a preset kill limit or Hillary would just send wave after wave of her own men at them.

Why does he "need" to narrow the gap in WV, or KY or wherever?

Well, if you are only focusing on the pledged delegates, the answer is, he doesn't. Hell, if this were only about pledged delegates, he arguably wouldn't have had to compete in Pennsylvania.

But I'm sure he wants to make the best case possible to the super-delegates. Making the remaining races in West Virginia and Kentucky as competitive as possible could bolster his case in a couple of ways. He may be trying to improve his numbers amongst white, working class voters. He may be trying to make sure that he wins the popular vote even under Hillary's ridiculous, slanted counting rules. Or, as others have suggested, he may be getting a jump on the general by establishing his presence and brand everywhere.

All legitimate ways to spend that pile of primary cash.

user-pic

Great comment - I agree.

I do think he meant it the other night when he said he expects this to go on until the voting is over.

I don't know if she can afford to do that - guess we'll see.

user-pic

According to "some people" the super delegates have already decided.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0408/9862.html

The 3 reasons why the SDs WON'T choose Hillary:

(a) Hillary Rodham Clinton is such a polarizing figure that everyone who ever considered voting Republican in November, and even many who never did, will go to the polls to vote against her, thus jeopardizing Democrats down the ticket – i.e., themselves, or, for party leaders, the sizeable majorities they hope to gain in the House and the Senate in November.

(b) To take the nomination away from Obama when he is leading in the elected delegate count would deeply alienate the black base of the Democratic Party, and, in the words of one leading Democrat, “The superdelegates are not going to switch their votes and jeopardize the future of the Democratic Party for generations.” Such a move, he said, would also disillusion the new, mostly young, voters who have entered into politics for the first time because of Obama, and lose the votes of independents who could make the critical difference in November.

(c) Because the black vote can make the decisive difference in numerous congressional districts, discarding Obama could cost the Democrats numerous seats.

And it further reinforces his point that EVERY state MATTERS.

As such, he needs to seriously narrow the gap in time for the May 13 primary...

Bullshit. Hillary would need to win all remaining states (including North Carolina, Indiana, and Oregon) by 68% to pull even with Obama. Congratulations to her for being poised to possibly do that in one state. Nobody, including Hillary Clinton, believes that's going to happen.

There is no credible argument that Obama needs to "seriously narrow the gap" in West Virginia.

He doesn't need to narrow the gap, but it'll make his life easier if he does. Every pledged delegate he snags from Hillary means that she'll need to persuade two more supers to vote for her, and every West Virginian who votes for him knocks that much more wind out of Hillary's arguments about popular votes and demographics.

Shaving off half her lead the way he did in PA would help him a bunch (not that I'm convinced that's remotely possible). Who knows, he might even get luck and Clinton may get caught up in a scandal or major gaffe four or five news cycles before the WV primary.

Obama's gotten where he is by fighting for every delegate in every state. Why change a winning strategy?

What a great ad! If that one doesn't hit home, then I'm going to have to attribute it to the state slogan:

"West Virginia: 2 Million People - 11 Last Names"

Damn ... I can't believe I just posted that. Now I'll never be able to run for President.

user-pic

You will if you pay all of us off to forget it.

And I thought that the same applied to parts of Kentucky, too.

Neither will any of us who just read it and didn't immediately shut down their computer in protest.

user-pic

after we reject and denounce it.

user-pic

Does spitting up coffee all over the keyboard count as sort of a "shutting down the computer in protest"?

If so, then I can still run for President.

And I've got the cat demographic locked up, people.

The controversial post was actually made at 3:08 p.m. So if you weren't actually reading the thread at that time (or are confident of an absence of proof to this effect), you have nothing to worry about.

That won't keep them from reposting Timba's quote over and over and over again from now until November, though.

Ever since Clearthinker's God Damn America post last week, we are all doomed, Josh, Eric, Iglesias, Clemons, Berube, idiotic, everyone. So don't be too hard on yourself.

I think his ads should be more general too, people want to know that a President can deal with lots of issues that they are about, not just 1 or 2 issues. He should talk about veterans, education, the economy, because this is one of Clinton's strenghths, she talks about everything, bread and butter issues. She uses issues as a pivot to talk about the bigger picture. Yes energy policy is impt. but people want the whole package, someone who can deal with everything and has a good package to offer the American people.

that they *care* about

Oilbama is clearly wiser than most of his supporters realizing this primary is not over. Bully for him.

user-pic

He's totally starting his GE campaign. And this is one of the great things about Obama and his fundraising juggernaut. He will force McCain to fight for every single vote, even in the states where McCain might be inclined to feel safe.

As for the primary, it doesn't matter that Kentucky and West Virginia will probably go for Clinton. The primary will be over by then, and everybody except the Clintons will know it.

user-pic

He will force McCain to fight for every single vote, even in the states where McCain might be inclined to feel safe.

word up.

I get the idea that Howard is nervous enough about the GE to really be serious about starting it right now and I suspect we'll see more and more campaigning against Himmary.

Hillary could be ignored to death, ya know - that would be loverly.

user-pic

Sorry my quote from Phoebe failed to make it into blocks because I messed up my tags again.

*sigh*

"This is for me a no-brainer," Gov. Strickland said. "If we're going to plan to win in November, we need to choose the candidate that has the greatest strength in the states that are necessary to get us the electoral votes we need." He added: "I hope the superdelegates are paying attention."

Today, the headline in the media is wright.

This weekend, another meltdown on Fox News.

Time for Obama to drop out so we can win this time.

Enough with the radicals. It is a sure loser in the general.

user-pic

Oh, goaty. The Strickland quote is just getting stale.

You mean states like CO, OR and NM?

I agree wholeheartedly.

Contrary to the beliefs of some of the more rabid Clinton supporters, there are actually 50 states in the Union, not three.

But when he outspends by huge margins in state after state, and still doesn't win, it raises questions. Some are saying that in Indiana the burden is now on Obama to win and prove that he can appeal to working class whites. The media dynamic is shifting from getting Hillary to drop out to getting Obama to prove himself.

user-pic

Only for you and gotalife and weaver and the rest of the merry band.

It doesn't raise any questions with the DNC.

I don't think they care about your questions.

I know I don't.

user-pic

He has won in 30 states. He has proven himself. He will win in two more in a couple weeks.

user-pic

Except for the fact that Hillary has already lost.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0408/9862.html

At first, a large number of superdelegates planned to announce their support for Obama following Super Tuesday, but he didn’t do well enough to warrant that; then it was to be after Ohio and Texas; then after Pennsylvania; and some Democrats suggest that if Obama wins both Indiana and North Carolina a number of superdelegates will announce for him then. But the prevailing thinking is to allow the race to play out, avoiding a confrontation with Clinton and her backers, but also letting the pressure grow on her to justify continuing to fight a bloody but lost cause. This is, the thinking goes, the best and perhaps only way to get the thing wrapped up, as they so desperately want to do.

“We may have to go to June, and whoever ends up with the most delegates wins,” a key Democrat says. “Meanwhile, the attention will be on the battle she can’t win, so why is she doing this – from here on out she’s only bleeding the party. The right way to put it is, ‘This is a war of attrition and it’s obvious that the numbers aren’t going to add up, so what’s the point?’” He added, “The hope is that at some point the superdelegates will get frustrated and join the Obama bandwagon.”

This pressure may not be enough to get the tenacious Hillary Rodham Clinton to quit the race, but, says a leading Democrat, “Sometime in June we will make it clear to her that this thing isn’t going to the convention.”

Silly gotalife, Do you think Hillary can only win if Obama drops out?? You must be forgetting about Eric's completely feasible 7-part Clinton Path to Victory:

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/04/hillarys_game_plan.php#comments

Greg's "Path to Victory", not Eric's, sorry.

user-pic

The media dynamic is shifting from getting Hillary to drop out to getting Obama to prove himself

Unfortunately, the superdelegate dynamic is shifting in the opposite direction: why won't Hillary drop out? She can't win it.

Obama's lead dwindled steadily all week, falling from a high of 10 percentage points in interviewing conducted in the three days just prior to the Pennsylvania primary. The percentage of Democrats supporting Obama declining from 50% in April 19-21 polling to 48% today). Most of Clinton's increased support (from 40% to 47%) has come from previously undecided voters. Clearly the people who did not drink the Obama Koolaid never will. Clinton fares better than Obama against John McCain in hypothetical matchups for the November election. Clinton is running two points ahead of McCain, 47% to 45%, while Obama is running one point behind, 45% to 46%.
Clearly Obama has peaked and is going to fall hard in a crash landing. Thank goodness for Rev Wright telling the truth about Obama, that he spins like a politician but really beleives everthing Rev Wright is saying. Obama needs to drop out now before he ruins the party.

Calls for Obama to drop out for the good of the party are slightly disingenuous, to say the least.

He lost 2 points of support over a week, in a poll with a 3 point margin of error.

He's finished for sure this time!

Seriously when are people going to view this chickenshit Obama campaign without blinders on. To chicken to allow Michigan to vote! To chicken to debate! Maybe in Obama land with the koolaid drinkers this seems presidential, to the rest of the country it looks like a little whining baby.
Rev Wright now says Obama agrees with everything he has said but spins like a politician to chicken to tell the truth!.
Obama needs to drop out now before he ruins the party.

Damn ... I can't believe you just posted that. Now you'll never be able to run for President.

I'm obviously a Hawaiian Punch guy, so your branding us Kool-Aid drinkers is falling on dear ears over here, pal.

user-pic

Why is he buying local airtime anywhere? Just buy national airtime and start running that 50 state strategy against all rivals.

user-pic

dembillc:

are you "too" chicken to learn the difference between "to," "too," and "two"? i find it telling that you clintonites believe - and i mean, you've actually deluded yourselves to this point - that the fact that all of the candidates agreed that florida and michigan wouldn't be counted before the primaries began. does this mean nothing to anyone anymore? why does hillary get to change the rules whenever they don't suit her?

and now you're quoting rev. wright as an authority? i'm sure that just two days ago, you couldn't get enough of repeating a couple of little snippets of his sermons. but now that he said something that you can misconstrue for your own purposes... well, now he should be quoted and listened to.

furthemore, why would obama drop out now? he has won. this is what you people don't seem to understand. as the allied forces were walking into western germany and the russians closed in on berlin, they didn't decide to sue hitler for peace. the winners don't drop out. the losers drop out. (unless you're a clinton. then you can pretty much do whatever you want to and pretend like you're doing the world a favor.)

you clinton supporters are out of f**king minds. now you're all making pledges to support john mccain and help extend republican dominance over the country for another generation, simply because you're convinced that hillary is the ONLY person worthy of the presidency. if that's your solution, then fine. but stop calling yourselves democrats. stop calling yourselves liberals. stop pretending like you care about the country. for you to help the republicans hold onto the white house for another four more years makes you fully culpable for the havoc that they will wreak on the country and the world.

you're tearing the party up. you're planning on ruining the country. i hope that your devotion to hillary was worth it. personally, i enjoy civil rights.

i guess we deserve the fallout, since we didn't see the light. pretty stiff price to pay, simply because you guys are sore losers...

If Obama loses by a 2-1 margin in WV as well as every other remaining state then Hillary still will not have gotten the 71% of remaining delegates she needs to overtake his pledged delegate lead.

Come on.

No one has done more for West Virginia than Barack Obama.

Everyone seems to forget that Obama has involved the great majority of a whole new generation in Democratic politics. If the SD's abandon Obama, the Democratic party will have lost this generation forever. It will guarantee a generation, read a quarter of a century with Democrats in the minority in both houses and no president. In other words this would come close to giving Rove his planned permanent republican majority as anything Rove could do. In fact, I see Rove egging this on.
