Obama Camp: Hillary Complained About Rough Debate Treatment, Too

Here, from Obama spokesperson Bill Burton, is the response to Hillary's criticism of the Illinois Senator this morning for "complaining" about Wednesday's debate...

"Considering the fact that Senator Clinton sat on stage at the last debate and complained to all of America that she always gets the first question, her blatant hypocrisy here is stunning. But if she'd rather spend her time talking about the same distractions and divisions that Washington is obsessed with, that's her business. Barack Obama believes the American people deserve a real debate issues that actually matter like health care, the economy, bringing this war to an end."

The Obama camp's rapid response crew also blasted out this YouTube of Hillary talking at the last debate about always getting the first question.

Notice a difference too: she was complaining while getting a question on NAFTA. Obama's questions were about flag pins.

Obama needs to say that he has no problem with tough questions, as long as they're relevant questions.

Gander, meet Goose.

Exactly!

It's a good comeback, but of course not actually true. Hillary wasn't complaining about being asked tough questions, but complaining that the questions to her were much tougher than to Obama. She wanted them to be equally tough. In the Clinton camp's view, ABC evened the score by giving Obama a rough ride.

user-pic

Obama isn't complaining about tough questions either. He was complaining that the questions were inane, idiotic, and a waste of time.

Also, Hillary was complaining about getting the first question (which makes no sense) rather then the type of question.

In general, her campaign had been complaining that Obama was just getting more favorable treatment in the press, because they kept on talking about what an awful candidate she is.

She always lies. She can't help herself.

user-pic

Thanks Obama campaign, you really do this well.

YEEEEEEESSSSS!

I was wondering if they'd get her on this one... damn, Obama's people are fast.

Impressive.

user-pic

She walked right into this one. I can't believe that her campaign thought that criticizing Obama for complaining about the debate was a smart strategy. I'm guess that this is the last we'll hear of it.

And according to NPR (I think?) this line of attack was going to be one of her big final week message pushes. How stupid can one campaign be?

(On that note, a final observation... I had thought that with Penn gone and Garin in charge, the HRC campaign would get a little less ridiculous. But I guess what they say is true: the fish rots from the head. My opinion of Hillary has sunk even lower, upon realizing this. I had thought she was better than her campaign, but it turns out that the shameless campaign IS her.)

user-pic

I don't think it's stupid or that she just walked into this -- her campaign knows what it is doing.

I think they have been playing so dirty for so long, while Obama tries to remain above the fray, that Camp Hillary just assumes that Obama won't come back and point out her hypocrisy (plagiarism, etc etc). He even helped save her a bit from Bosnia and untrustworthiness in the PA debate. Also, I think they figure that if he does hit back, they've already gotten "their side of the story" out there and the second wave just won't carry as much weight in the media.

They are a very cynical bunch, Camp Clinton. They have just misjudged by playing that type of politics in a year when people are sick of regurgitations of elections over the last 20 years (media still loves it, obviously). And now it's too late for her anyway, so that's all they've got left.

This was a softball served up by Bill, that Team Obama blasted over the fence.

Thank you Bill, I feel your pain!

That is not Hillary on the YouTube link.

Take a look at the eyes and the facial expressions.

That is Andy Kaufman in a Pantsuit.

I thought about this too. It seems like the Clinton campaign only exists in the moment. They seem to never look backward or forward.

Out of sight, out of mind. I once thought it was merely their opinion of the electorate.

The Clinton campaign is running from outside of History. That's why they are such a historical campaign.

Improvisation. The unfortunate thing is that too much of the American public doesn't look forward or back either. Short attention spans and even shorter memories. Look at the national polls today. Hillary redux. Not that it really means anything. Give Obama a favorable news cycle next week, and he'll be up again. But what do you want? We have a 30% highschool drop out rate, and the vast majority of the population cannot read an article in the NY Post (not the Times, the Post) and understand it. As a teacher friend of mine (who has taught around the world) once said, the American education system is so bad, someone had to have planned it.

user-pic

A better, or at least more substantive, response would be that Obama is happy to discuss the real hard questions war, the economy, jobs, health care, etc. while leaving the tough discussion of flag pins to Clinton.

When did Obama complain about the debate?

or, when did he complain about hard questions?

He didn't. Bill and Hill are both seeing sniper fire again and running from it.

the clintons must be stuck in a time warp. they clearly don't know there's this thing on the internets call "youtube." that's the only explaination that works.

Their base can find their navels, much less a clip on youtube.

user-pic
I thought about this too. It seems like the Clinton campaign only exists in the moment. They seem to never look backward or forward.

Well who does that remind you of?

user-pic

Bingo!

user-pic

Did you say you're a lawyer? You can be so good. Many people would just scream the connection. One Socratic question is so much cooler.

Is it Craig Ferguson? Hmmm!

user-pic

Has the HRC campaign already forgotten their "Politics of Pile On" web ad? If that wasn't griping, I don't know what is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zk16oxb4Ck4

And there began a tale. Enter Hillary the victim of the boys' club and the grievance feminists.

The Clinton campaign once again leaps before looking. Such political ineptitude. We have to keep them out of the White House or risk losing Congress like Bill did in 1994.

Too many first questions have made Hillary bitter,
and caused her to cling to her traditional lie telling.

user-pic

When you're on, you're on.

Decent response but the obvious counter is: OK, you say you want to debate issues, then agree to the North Carolina debate.

Then Obama has to respond again w/either 'we've debated enough,' which won't fly b/c he says Americans deserve a debate...or 'i want to know we'll debate issues,' to which the response is that he wants to control the questions and doesn't have the strength to address whatever comes at him.

We'll see how Clinton responds...but I am glad Obama didn't bother parsing 'what is complaining' and whether he actually complained, which is a waste of time.

user-pic

re: NC debate, great point.
I'd be happy to see another debate with competant moderators.

Stewart and Colbert? The Comedy Central North Carolina Debate?

You KNOW it's be the best one in our lifetimes.

user-pic

Man, I understand where all of those typo jokes come from now.

I am teh shitty speller.

Whining about whining...

user-pic

I didn't think it was just Obama or his campaign protesting. Last I heard, there were thousands of people across the country writing letters, blog posts, and editorials saying that the debates were crap.

She probably 'forgot' about that time or the time she alluded to SNL to prove her point of being picked on by the mean media.
As Bill pointed out, she's starting to have memory problems.

Kids in the backseat squabbling....that's what it looks like.

And Clinton is the one who's crying loudest just to get what she wants.

Will everyone cave?

More whining?

His negatives piled up and he went down in flames in the last debate.

He sent the supers this message:

http://thedemocraticdaily.com/2008/04/17/did-obama-give-hillary-the-finger-today/

They should vote for Clinton if they want to win this time.

user-pic

Half of a message is receiving it.
Since you seem to be picking this one up loud and clear...

For some reason, your post reminds me of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h3G-lMZxjo

Let me let you in on a little secret.

The "flip off" is a trick of camera angles.

Taylor Marsh and other 'credible' sources like that (you know, the ones with their sensitivty dials set to 11) are getting their undies all bunched up over nothin'...

And the earlier pinky-action to the corner of his mouth was the secret reminder to latte-drinkers as to how they should hold the cup.

Wow, how are you able to remember to breathe, seeing as how large segments of your brain are obviously dead.

user-pic
Did you say you're a lawyer? You can be so good. Many people would just scream the connection. One Socratic question is so much cooler

Aren't you sweet? Too bad I can't learn to leave it at that.

As I've said before - it's a wonder my mouth hasn't gotten me killed yet.

;)

If we're nitpicking, then it's worth pointing out that Obama hasn't complained about the questions being "tough", but rather that they were "distractions" from the issues Americans really care about.

user-pic

Nitpick away friend. I haven't watched every videotaped moment of the last 2 days to make sure you're correct, but I hope you are.

user-pic

A Clinton Presidency will deal with the hard issues of what lapel pin you should wear, who your preacher should be and what neighbors you can be on a committee with.

An Obama Presidency will deal with the war, economy and jobs.

We report... you decide.

How is it that Obama laughing about the debate being stupid is now whining? He didn't whine or complain -- he talked about how something stupid was kind of stupid and then he brushed off his shoulders. Why can't we call things what they actually are?

Obama didn't whine about the debates. Thousands of Americans aren't WHINING about the debates -- they're pointing out that they want something better from their country. That's not whining -- it's a demand for change.

user-pic

Exactly right.

He satirized the debate. He made a joke of the debate. He sent it up. The Clintons are lying. That's all they do anymore. They look straight into the camera and lie like butter wouldn't melt in their mouths.

For some reason, your post reminds me of this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h3G-lMZxjo

THe problem with this is Hillary is starting to be tagged as republican lite -- She should be joined Obama in slamming the debate .. she is on the wrong side of this one.

that said I wish Obama has used this tactic against Hillary when she complained that she was always getting the first question

user-pic

No offense, but "starting to"??

Hillary stood right up to the attacks RIGHT THERE ON THE STAGE and performed well in the debate. She fought back immediately. Obama did not stand up to the attacks. He got rattled. Then he complained about them later, after delivering a poor performance. Hillary fought back immediately. Hillary pointed out exactly what they were trying to do to her. And she withstood it all and came out ahead. Everyone saw her as a fighter. Everyone saw how fast she was on her feet. Obama wimped out, and then chose to complain about it later in an effort at damage control. Now he tries to turn the tables in a bogus argument.

By the way, Imus is calling him a "sissy".

user-pic

Imus?
Well, that's it for me. I'm votin' Clinton.

You were doing OK there, Otto. Passionate, semi-coherent assertions.

Imus killed it.

His meltdown in the debate is ignored and day 2 of whining is getting ridiculous.

There is no fight in Obama or his supporters.

Sad, they want to run this guy.

A sure loser in the general.

You might want to get that "radio to the future" you seem to have in your brain checked out.

What attacks? The attacks were on Obama, not Hillary. Her former employee conveniently overlooked entire dossiers of questionable issues he could have gone after her on. Instead, he remained loyal (the paramount Clinton virtue) and went after Obama.

If you require visual confirmation of that debate's subtext, this should help.

Imus supposedly said that "he's almost a big of a pussy as Hillary".

Which you can take however you want.

That said, what Imus has to say means less to me than that bird that died the other day eating popcorn.

And how big is your dick, Otto?

Good try, Obama. But the difference is Hillary fought back right then and there. You are whining about it later.

June 3rd. Mark it on the calendar. Fun to watch you kicking and screaming towards irrelevancy.

user-pic

By the look of the polling trends, it may be April 24th

And on Inaugration day, please remember this quote (as will I) when you're whining that you're going to have to deal with President Obama for 8 years.

No worries, it'll be 8 years of peace and prosperity.

You don't have to thank him, your success will be thanks enough. :)

Post it one more time, Otto. Third time's a charm, they say.

You don't win debates by wimping out and complaining about it later. You win debates by standing up for yourself in an effective way DURING THE DEBATE.

user-pic

And you don't win the White House by winning debates.

A good rejoinder for camp Obama:

"Senator Obama never complained that the questions were too tough. He complained that they were stupid. Confusing being tough with being stupid is how Hillary Clinton voted for the Iraq war. She thought she was being tough, but ended up being stupid. We deserve better, not just from our debates, but from our leaders as well. And it's obvious why Senator Clinton has trouble seeing that".

Otto, I think your memory is as bad as Sen. Clinton's. She "fought back" by (essentially) admitting that she lied because she uses lots of words and was tired. Obama "wimped out" by calling the questions what they were - distractions.

And by the way, using Imus as an authoritative source on anything is pretty damn weak.

This was a necessary response from the campaign, but Obama himself needs to let it go now. Let Clinton flail. He's made his point about eschewing distractions, now he should embody it.

Bus tour #2 is exactly what he should be doing right now. Coverage of him touring factories, etc., will do more for him now than bickering with Clinton.

Another high-profile endorsement on Monday wouldn't hurt, either . . .

I should not be so surprised to see the outrage over ABC's debate questions. Yet when I read the Washington Post this AM, a very liberal paper of course, I was still surprised at the attacks on ABC and George S. & Charlie G.

People/media have actually become so accustomed to the softee treatment of Obama that they were just shocked and outraged over the debate. The media treatment of BO had become a joke; Even Saturday Night Live was doing skits on it. Yet even with that, MSNBC, CNN and the rest were not changing their approach.

FINALLY, a news network asked him the questions that everyone else in America was talking about and asking! Thank goodness for that! And of course the left wing of the Dem. party and media are just besides themselves! What a joke that is.

I for one, am very grateful that someone (besides Fox and S. Hannity) had the honesty to ask what the majority of Americans are wondering about. Let the left wing attack all they want. We wanted these questions asked. They had to be asked. Better now than August/Sept.

And of course Obama failed miserably in his attempts to 'splain it all.

Hats off to you ABC!

Rae

The trolls love to whine.

His meltdown in the debate proved Clinton should be the nominee.

"His meltdown in the debate proved Clinton should be the nominee."

There are two things wrong with that statement.

user-pic

someone (besides Fox and S. Hannity) had the honesty

all you need to know about Rae in 9 words!

user-pic

RaeK says,
"FINALLY, a news network asked him the questions that everyone else in America was talking about and asking!"

Which just goes to show that RaeK has taken up residence in the ever tightening, collapsing in on itself, self-referencing outpost from reality called the Clinton camp. That's the camp where nothing is acceptable except Obama bashing derived from illogical conclusions based upon multiple degrees of separation associations, like what Ayers was doing when Obama was eight years old, or what Obama was saying in kindergarten.

Yes, for those campers, there is no longer a world outside, so what follows illogically is 'everyone else in America' is simply 'everyone else in the Clinton outpost', the only ones who have been talking about and asking those inane questions among themselves.

"How is it that Obama laughing about the debate being stupid is now whining? "

It's called the Obama rules:

McCain can have brothel-felon-advising campaign strategists and public-toilet-sex co-chairs, Hillary can have fugutive-donors and terrorist-pardons. But if Obama's college roommate gets a parking ticket, or if Harry Belafonte says anything, the MSM will be doing it's "gotcha" bs.

ps. "Obama did not stand up to the attacks. He got rattled." No he did not. He doesn't hit hard on Hillary because he doesn't want to offend her very touchy supporters. That's why he's winning. Being an attack dog always isn't "tough". In some cases, it is stupid. But anyway, good try goading Obama into foolish attack-dogism. He won't bite and Hillary will lose. To the patient and the smart go the spoils.

Obama is suddenly getting the poor treatment Hillary was getting all along. That's how the press treats dems. (Notice McCain has no flag pin, makes gaffes daily).

Only everyone "hates" Hillary so it's ok. But when it's turned on "their" candidate, people see how unfair it is.

You can't blame Hillary for this. She's just learned how to survive it and rise above it. Obama clearly hasn't.

More Spin. Hillary was getting hit on things of substance! Also because she was first lady that had baggage. Name one reporter in this campaign that has brought up Vince Foster, which is the equivalent of the flag pin crap and Ayers that Obama has been hit with! Then she whines in a national televised debate and uses an SNL spoof that wasnt even funny to make her point. That was Presidential and showed the values of Leadership. Obama has said lets get off the distraction politics. Talking about Nafta (something that effects the economy and allot of people) is not a distraction.

user-pic

Hillary had nothing to do with the death of Vince Foster. So far as I know.

You would think in this error of the internet and tape recorded video the Obama could put together and Add of all the idiotic things the Clintons(and there supporters) have done and said. Im sure they would have to do it in a way that she cant spin it into negativity, but I mean she has provided so much amunition for the campaign that if done right, I think the public would have to say nuff said! Not that this wasnt a start or a good response to her, but we need more and more definitive...IMOP!

user-pic
I should not be so surprised to see the outrage over ABC's debate questions. Yet when I read the Washington Post this AM, a very liberal paper of course, I was still surprised at the attacks on ABC and George S. & Charlie G.

LOLOLOL!!!

stupidest fucking trolls on the internet. And I thought they were all at Eschaton.

Dammit.....Era not Error.....Sheesh!

Obama has shown what a weakling and BABY he is. Wah Wah Wah ... all the way home little piggy...

LOL

Actually he had a very classy response to the orchestrated hit job the Charlie Gibson and Clintons Press secretary set up for him. His error in judgement was in allowing a Clinton employee to be the moderator.

user-pic

all the way home for you, little republican sheep

you, Hillary, McCain, are all going down this year

waaaaaaaaaaaaaa, or perhaps baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

I'm not a republican. I was a Dem. But if Barak Hussein wins, I VOTE republican this time!

BAaahhhhhha!

Rae

I am woman, hear me ROAR!

now you see why hillary people will not vote for obama. in the nbc debate they were always asking her the first question and then letting obama respond. this gave obama an advantage knowing hillarys answer before giving his response. remember russerts toss up question that should have been asked of obama because he wasnt attending sub comittee meetings it would have been interesting to find out what obama did or didnt know. it could have changed the election.

Yaaaaawwwwn!

So what have we learned so far about Barry?

He's able to dismiss the opinions of "typical" citizens with a regal wave of his hand as being merely psychological symptoms of an underlying frustration, which his laser vision can clearly see, but in our feeble-mindedness we cannot hope to understand.

And at his press conferences as president, he'll be happy to tell the reporters what they can and cannot ask. He won't want us to waste his time with questions he considers irrelevant or too stupid for him to address.

And if we persist in our doltishness, he may just give us all the finger, or brush us off his shoulder. And in true non-partisan fashion, he thinks we're all unworthy, GOP and Democrat alike.

user-pic

so bitter. don't worry, it'll be over soon.

FINALLY, a news network asked him the questions that everyone else in America was talking about and asking!

By the rest of America, you mean Sean Handupme?

I find it amazing that Stepontopofus went on Handupme and got the Ayers issue... and somehow Clinton was able to field that by smearing Obama over sharing a committee! It is...as if... Clinton was using a surrogate to use right wing talking points and use them to her advantage!

On another note:

I think Clinton overplayed their hand with the whining issue... It looks like they already had the plan in place and anticipated a whiny reaction from Obama. The orcehstrated a media circus to paint him as unfit, when all Obama did was brush it off and point out that the media was unfair to the American public by asking stupid Handupme right wing questions that have no BEARING on the crises facing us today.

I think Clinton ate a bowl of dum dums after drinking a cup of stupid juice.

I swear she had the questions in advance. she was just too ready. Expecially when they got Ayers. By the way Stepontopof us is great. Love it.

And if we persist in our doltishness, he may just give us all the finger, or brush us off his shoulder. And in true non-partisan fashion, he thinks we're all unworthy, GOP and Democrat alike.

Hey hotshot, where's YOUR flag pin?

Clinton's hypocrisy is not stunning. It's expected.

Tell me why a Democratic candidate who acts like Karl Rove is good for America again?

At the debate Obama is mentioning Hillary shot right back at the moderators. She came out swinging. She didn't turn in a bad performance as Obama did, and then spend days whining about how unfair it was.

I did not bother watching the debate. I watched a Three Stooges Episode.

The usual Three Stooges stuff. One guy named Charlie used a baseball bat to assault a very refined African American Gentleman. After Charlie got tired of assaulting the Black Man, he then passed the baseball bat to a Stooge name George, who then wailed on the same African American Gentlemen, until Stooge number two grew tired of it. Then Stooge one, turned to Stooge number three, some one named Tuzla Mistake and asked her if she wished to have unlimited time with the baseball bat to punish the black man for not wearing a flag pin, and for having lived in the same large city as some guy who was a friend of two people that Tuzla Mistakes' husband had pardoned.

Tuzla Mistake said; thank you Charlie, and yes I would.

I bet you folks are all jealous that you wasted your time watching that boring debate, instead of catching that classic episode of The Three Stooges starring in: Only White Folks Don't Need To Wear Flag Pins.

user-pic
I swear she had the questions in advance. she was just too ready. Expecially when they got Ayers. By the way Stepontopof us is great. Love i

I think so too.

She was just so perky with those answers - so ready. That was a planned hit job.

He is absolutely right, do the Clintons have absolutely no concept of how wildly hypocritical they are when they say shit like this? I mean these two are the f-ing royal family of complaining about the big bad media, and they didn't even have much cause to:
http://www.thepersonalispolitical.com/2008/02/waaaahh-meeedia-playing-for-excuses.html

But when Obama has every reason to, and then doesn't even complain, he simply brushes it off (literally) and says this is a perfect example of the kind of politics he is running against, the kind that keeps us from focusing on the real issues, they accuse him of whining??? Yeah, this coming from the person who threw a small tantrum over being asked the first question in a debate. The hillpocrisy of it all is shocking:

http://www.thepersonalispolitical.com/2008/04/hillary-hates-talking-about-issues.html

While Hillary Clinton was saying today that she
did not think Senator Obama should not be complaining about the kind of questions that Charlie and George asked during the debate, her daughter Chelsey was saying the exact opposite to a College group.

Chelsey urged them to call ABC and complain about the lack of substance in the questions that Charlie and George asked during the debate.

More of the same usual Clinton Doublespeak Bullshit.

Here is the NBC account of what Chelsey said, today.
She did a lot of "whining" about the quality of the questions.

From NBC's Lauren Appelbaum
PHILADELPHIA -- During an event billed as a discussion on the high costs of higher education yesterday afternoon, Chelsea Clinton faced difficult questions from Drexel University law students and faculty. Clinton called on those in attendance to call ABC with their complaints about last night's debate, tied her mother's work with children and women to the current situation with the Texas sect, and poked fun at a conservative first-year law student in the audience.

THE DEBATE: UNFAIR TO OBAMA?
One of the questions Clinton fielded came from a university administrator who asked her about her mom's actions during Tuesday night's debate. "Frankly, I was disappointed in her that she didn't have a stronger reaction to some of the inane questions that were asked that last night and that were really insulting to us and the candidates," Leslie Friedman said to Clinton.

"I agree," Clinton said. "My mom's been talking about the issues ... from public school reform to higher education affordability to equal pay to expanding Family Medical Leave. ... That's what she talks about. I wish that was what the media covered. I wish that was what they had asked about from the beginning last night."

But Friedman, who supports Obama, was not satisfied with this answer, firing back: "I think it's important though for a leader also to step up and say, 'You know, these kinds of questions are inappropriate, and I am insulted when you ask me or my opponent those questions.' And I wish that your mom would stand up and say that."

"And she has so frequently," Chelsea responded. "I am certainly proud at how she has been standing up and talking about the issues, and I wish that is what was focused on. I wish that was what the two moderators at the debate had started the debate last night. I also, as someone who has been a member of the family that has been on the receiving end quite a bit of Republican fire understand that some of what came up in the debate last night in the first part of the debate is unfortunately what will come up in the general election for whomever is running. ... I know that that type of attack will often be more subtle than what was raised in the debate last night and certainly will be pushed forward as trying to carve out what is at stake in this election."

"I wish that was what the debate was focused on last night," Clinton continued, saying her mother would have rather had issue-based questions. "And I hope that you'll write to ABC and you'll tell them that. I'm serous though. ... I hope that you will try to again reestablish those issues of being the focal point of not only this debate but of our politics. I wish that were true. I'm so proud that that is what my mom is always fighting to do."

Soon, you Obamamites will be bitter and running for your guns and clinging to your koolaid, washing it down with your snake oil to sooth your agony when Obama is NOT given the election.

I hear you people are going to be rioting in the streets when that happens. Maybe some of you will even set some bombs like Obama and his friends believe you should do when you don't get your way.

LOL

Rae

Jeez Rae you must be on something. So much hatred in three sentences.

Gotalife you are a dope. The film clip shows Obama scratching his face. Anyone trying to imply he is 'giving Hillary the finger" is looking through the lens of their own bias and hatred. I can't believe anyone would fall for this kind of nonsense, but you clearly have. I try to understand how and can only explain it to myself like this: you have deluded yourself into believing Obama was 'giving the finger to Hillary' because it's the kind of response you would give yourself to anyone who disagrees with you. I encourage you to step out of your blinkers and stop acting like a clown.

Sounds like you're gunning for the self-fulfilling prophecy there, Rae.

You know, despite her voluminous pile of crap this primary, I *will* vote for Hillary come November if she's the nom. You know why? Precisely *because* I find this entire idea of sabotaging the front-runner's campaign and then planning to crow after the GE about how he "wasn't electable" to be one of the most disgusting strategies I've seen. I DON'T WANT McCAIN IN THE WHITE HOUSE.

But apparently you really, really do. So please don't even suggest to anyone here that you're a Democrat. Just call yourself a Republican already and have done.
