Now, I don’t blame Washington for this because that’s just how Washington is. They like stirring up controversies and getting us to play gotcha games and getting us to attack each other. And I’ve got to say Sen. Clinton looked in her element.

This is what people disappointed at his performance have to remember. He can't join her in the gutter, because he needs to unify the party after this nonsense is over. She, on the other hand, isn't thinking past the immediate moment.
I thinks there's another element at work here as well. Hillary is playing the loser's end game. Whenever a campaign goes exclusively on the attack, it's a sign that they've run out of options. The kitchen sink is always a last-ditch maneuver because you're obviously running the risk of having it backfire. Which it clearly has. But it doesn't matter, because it's all they've got left. Obama, on the other hand, doesn't need to do much of anything right now except hold his own. People in Pennsylvania are warming up to him, he doesn't need to win there, and he'll probably win both Indiana and North Carolina. And no matter what Hillary claims about going "all the way to the convention" it's just rhetoric. She won't be able to afford it, for one thing. And for another, the superdelegates will have driven her out by then.
