Obama Campaign Not Saying Whether He'll Release 1997-1999 Tax Returns

The Clinton campaign has been demanding that Obama release his 1997-1999 tax returns, and today on an Obama campaign conference call, Obama campaign manager David Plouffe was asked if he would do just that.

Plouffe's answer:

"We released our full tax returns for the entire decade, same period...we'll be releasing shortly our full 2007 tax returns."

The Obama campaign confirms that Plouffe was referring to 2000-2006, the same period that the Clintons released their returns for a few weeks ago. Plouffe didn't address the question about the 1997-1999 returns.

Hillary's returns from the 1990s -- when she was First Lady -- are available, obviously. It's still unclear whether Obama's 1997-1999 returns will be released.

Late Update: Here's some audio of the Obama campaign conference call:

why are these particularly significant? I find this to be another silly Clinton distraction.

Who do YOU want to be the next President?

Can you guys do something about this spammer?

BHO's tax returns from when he was a public official are very much fair game. His constant whining over HRC releasing her's is what has caused this latest firestorm to erupt. You reap what you sow.

The hypocrisy of his campaign now saying that they won't release his tax records from when he was a state senator is enormous and won't be lost on the American people. Makes you wonder what he has got to hide.

Except the news media has had the returns from 1997-2000 over a year ago (see links down-thread).

This is a non-issue. Those years Tax returns have already been made public.

They don't have the full returns, just what BHO has decided is 'relevant'. HRC release her FULL returns, as the hypocrite BHO has requested. Whether it’s tax returns or legislative records or his relationship with indicted political fixer Tony Rezko, BHO seems to take “the dog ate my homework” approach to disclosure. How refreshing to see from a non-political politician.

If you're still confused, please bother to read the original post to this thread.

Desperate times, desperate measures. Trying to bump Obama's three superdelegate endorsements and the three PA newspaper endorsements out of the spotlight.

I demand that Obama publish his tax returns all the way back to 1961. I further demand that John McCain publish his tax returns all the back to 487 B.C.

avatar

I lol'ed.

avatar

What we REALLY need to know is how much did Obama get paid for writing essays when he was in kindergarden?

Come on, Obama, level with us!

So when did hypocrisy become funny?

What hypocrisy?

His returns for 1997-1999 were made available last year.

487. Man, that was a great year.

avatar

And by the way, Ben Smith of Politico asked that question. It's funny how you two link each other.

It's not clear to me why this matters.

avatar

because the Clinton campaign is pushing this as another negative attack they're hoping reporters like Greg will report.

He is hiding how he paid cash for his mansion with Rezko money.

avatar

Uh, they paid for the mansion three years ago due to the money from the book sales. The facts seems to indicate the home sale wasn't made in the late nineties.

avatar

Wow. Just wow. You really should come out from under the bridge and get some sunlight. Your Vitamin D deficiency is obviously starting to seriously damage your mind.

avatar

Does being that stupid hurt?

I know why they're bringing it up now.

Hillary Clinton On Southern Working Class Whites In 1995: "Screw 'Em"

Hey, gotalife, didn't you predict a big "rollout" of some negative bomb by Hillary within the next week....

(checks calendar)

...like, more than a week ago?

How's that going for you?

One caveat: The years 1997-1999 were completed mostly before the "small town" flap broke out.

avatar

It "yet" remains to be seen how the years 1997 and 1999 will affect the Obama campaign in the general election......

avatar

LOL.

[big grin]

Thank you.

The years 1997-1999 -- won't these years prove, exactly, that Obama really is not an elite?

Precisely. What an amazingly stupid thing to ask. Now, people will focus again on her tax returns, and how much she and Bill made.

This campaign is expert at shooting itself in the foot - after the other one was blown off two weeks prior.

avatar

Being elitist and being rich are two very different things, and it's exceptionally easy to be one without the other.

I don't think tax returns are important, but considering how high and mighty Obama's campaign got about Hillary's, I don't think it's an unfair request. If he's got nothing to hide, why not release them?

For real. Why doesn't he just release them? Why give Shillary an issue, no matter how irrelevant?

avatar

Meanwhile, Obama just picked up three new super delegates today.

But I suppose decades-old tax returns are more important.

I remember posters here screaming for Clinton to release her tax records.

Now,

crickets.

Shame on you.

Not 2007. Neither of them have released 2007.

I assume Hillary & Bill filed for an extension.

avatar

they were supposed to release the 2007 tax return today.

But they filed for an extension and nobody batted an eye, including the Obama campaign. I know they're trying to be less petty than the Clinton campaign, but they still should have hit her on that, at least for a little while.

avatar

It would be impossible for them to release their tax returns until they have all the K1s from their many partnership interests.

I'm no Clinton defender, but I am a CPA and most high wealth individuals are forced to extend their tax returns because they just don't have all the needed documents in time.

Nah.

I'm screaming for an explanation on this Clinton statement.

Hillary has every right to go after Obama's tax returns, since he did the same to her on a number of occasions. It will be interesting to see if Obama once again turns this into "another negative Hillary attack", since he already did the same to her.

"Hillary has every right to go after Obama's tax returns, since he did the same to her on a number of occasions."

Just as Obama has the right to ask about those Clinton Library donors - shit, we can do this all day. lol

avatar

"Fine, I'll give you my '97-'99 returns, but you have to give me your '88 to '90."

Except that his returns for 1997-1999 were made public over a year ago.

Doh!

what alternate universe do you people live in?

Could someone please enlighten me. This article from the Chicago Tribune pretty clearly shows that the reporter reviewed Obama’s tax returns from 1997 through 1999.

www.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/chi-0704250022apr25,1,1209388.story

From 1997 through 2002, the Obamas reported devoting less than 1 percent of their household income to charity. In 2005, as the book-deal money poured in, they reported $1.65 million in combined income, with $77,315, or 4.7 percent, going to charity.

Only a few of the tax returns released by Obama detail the recipients of his charity. In 1998, when the Obamas reported a combined household income of $191,146 and $1,100 in cash donations to charity, the biggest gift went to Trinity. It totaled $400, about 0.2 percent of their combined income.

So what’s the story? Did he just release them to the press? It seems to me that there has been scrutiny of his tax returns, they just aren’t publicly available.

avatar

Oooh, nice catch. Greg, back to you to investigate this further.

avatar

Greg?

Greg's not here (in best Tommy Chong voice)

er, aimed at goatlive and Oto

avatar

Greg: You may want to contact this reporter that wrote the story about Obama's tax returns in 1997.

bsecter@tribune.com

Good call. Not sure Mr. Secter would respond to our inquiries.

"Mr. Secter, flufferwink on line two."

ROFL!

OK, I admit, I'm not really on the floor, but that was really damned funny!

avatar

I demand that Annie Oakley release all her tax returns through all her frontier years.

The people have a right to know who donated wampum and Bison skins to fund her gunslinger campaigns.

"Senator Clinton, I knew Annie Oakley. Her Grandmother and I once dated. Senator Clinton, you are no Annie Oakley!" John Methuselah McCain

Yeah, I remember you screaming for her to release her tax records on every post.

Obama gets a free pass huh?

Pathetic.

avatar

Wrong again; Crown Royal Breath. I never did.

A little early for the Crown but are you sure you are not lying like Obama?

I am pretty sure it was you screaming for her tax returns to be released on every post until she posted them.

Anyhoo, you trolls all sound same with your hate of the Clintons.

avatar

Ha ha!

Lying like Obama, that's funny coming from a Hillary suporter.

Question: are you under sniper fire as you type out your drivel? Should I call up Sinbad and tell him to come rescue you?

I beg you to please please please keep focusing on tax returns from 1997 to 1999. Please, gotalife. Oh God, please keep doing this.

Because you look like a fool.

I loved your man's gas-tax-summer plan, by the way. Adding 10 billion to the debt to buy votesw with a meaningless kickback to consumers that will do nothing for them. Your candidate McCain's a real straight talker. A straight talking suckhole, that is.

avatar

I don't remember asking for tax returns from ten years prior to her candidacy. And when you rack up over a hundred million dollars since leaving the White House and your husband is running around Colombia, you can expect an extra level of scrutiny. Keep grabbing straws.

avatar

"Greg Sargent Not Saying If He'll Repeat Any Clinton Campaign Attack On Obama"

"yet"

avatar

Thanks, I voted Keyes

avatar

lol, who cares about the 90s? I love that she is trying to be self-righteous now that she was FINALLY forced into showing her financial records.

Maybe Hillary should demand he cough up his mom's tax returns as well.

avatar

This just in..........Clinton Campaign demands Obama release his financial aid applications for every year he was in school.

The tax returns were never an issue, either for Obama or for Hillary.

But, frankly, it seems a little desperate for Hillary to be pushing this now, a week before the primary.

Excuse me - why do we need the returns going back that far?

This just in..........Clinton Campaign demands Obama release his financial aid applications for every year he was in school.

Thank you.

She's officially the Queen of Irrelevant Smear Jobs.

Easy to do. I do it all the time.

Aw shit. I keep messing up my tags.

How is this? Obama releases his tax returns for 97-99 and Hillary releases her earmark spending in total.

Deal?

avatar

Don't forget the earmark REQUESTS.

Horrible response, people.

Yes, it is yet another distraction. But by saying "but Obama did not demand records from the 90's" you are only giving ammunition to the distracters.

Yes, I think he should release those records and he will. In fact, several articles actually reference his 1998 returns and the Chicago newspapers had apparently been given permission to review all three years earlier (and they found nothing out of the ordinary.)

He should probably go ahead and release everything up to his kindergarten years because the Clinton campaign will be demanding 1994-1996 when they cannot find anything in 1997-1999. And then 1991-1993 and so on and so on, three years at a time all the way until the Convention in August just so she has some reason to stay in: "I am not irrelevant! You have to pick me! Obama's 1965-1966 return has some real dirt on it from his lemonade stand racketeering operation proceeds!"

avatar

What the media really wants to see is her 2007 tax returns, so this is just a silly distraction on her part. They're looking REALLY desperate.

By the way,I believe John McCain is supposed to release his this week.

avatar

NAFTA and Columbia Trade agreements:

Hillary is trying to distract people from hearing about how she still has Mark Penn on her payroll, and that Bill Clinton has been paid $800K from pro Columbia Trade deal agents.

Hillary is the Bride of Unfair Trade Deals.

What a surprise: Hillary on working class whites: "Screw 'em!"

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/04/16/hillary-clinton-on-workin_n_97017.html

Please stop linking to the Obama Post. That guy was trying to sell books.

It is the National Enquire or the Onion now.

A joke of the blogs.

Sad and embarrassing.

"Let's not talk about why you don't have a job, can't afford health care, or can't send your kids to college; let's talk about gay marriage, school prayer, illegal immigration, and flag burning amendments." - Bill Clinton 1992

"Working Americans have been repeatedly seduced at the polls by emotional issues such as the predictable mantra of "God, guns, gays, abortion and the flag" while their way of life shifted ineluctably beneath their feet." - Jim Webb, Wall Street Journal 2006)

...just trying to sell books?

Is that the best defense you have?

Just because he's trying to sell books doesn't mean that he lied. Unless you can point to proof that he lied, or at least a tacit denial by Ms. Clinton, then I have to assume it's true.

says the man linking to right-wing anti-Obama sites

Except we have two other people who verify what HRC said "Screw 'em" that were there.

Correction... we now have THREE people that confrim Ben Barber’s account of Hillary saying "Screw 'em".

Great quote from Bill:

"I know how you feel. I understand Hillary's sense of outrage. It makes me mad too. Sure, we lost our base in the South; our boys voted for Gingrich. But let me tell you something. I know these boys. I grew up with them. Hardworking, poor, white boys, who feel left out, feel that our reforms always come at their expense. Think about it, every progressive advance our country has made since the Civil War has been on their backs. They're the ones asked to pay the price of progress. Now, we are the party of progress, but let me tell you, until we find a way to include these boys in our programs, until we stop making them pay the whole price of liberty for others, we are never going to unite our party, never really going to have change that sticks."

I miss that Bill Clinton.

Well, this is the same Hillary Clinton who voted for the bankruptcy bill.

Tell me again how she's going to help economically depressed areas, where people might need to file bankruptcy? She's made that impossible for most people now - you can't get out from under your debts anymore.

Next up: Hillary-Joe will advocate Debtor's Prisons.

Greg gets snookered (again) by chug-a-lugging the Hillaryland kool-aide. From the Chicago Tribune back in April 2007:

Obama tax returns dating to 1997 show he fell well below that benchmark until 2005, the year he arrived in Washington. ... Obama signed two book deals worth nearly $2.3 million before entering the Senate. He received about $1.2 million of the book money in 2005, but tax records show the Obamas lived comfortably before then.

From 1997 through 2004, Obama earned dual paychecks for his work as a state lawmaker and as a lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School. Over the same period, his wife, Michelle, worked first for the University of Chicago and then for the University of Chicago Hospitals. Their household income also was augmented in most years by thousands of dollars Obama earned from practicing law, giving speeches or serving as a director of charitable foundations.
...
From 1997 through 2002, the Obamas reported devoting less than 1 percent of their household income to charity. In 2005, as the book-deal money poured in, they reported $1.65 million in combined income, with $77,315, or 4.7 percent, going to charity.

Stupid stupid stupid. Our economy is in the toilet and this is what you are focusing on. Talk about the disconnect. Obama isnt elitest you are.

Stupid stupid stupid. Our economy is in the toilet and this is what you are focusing on. Talk about the disconnect. Obama isnt elitest you are.

O will you please enlighten us poor benighted souls, then?

Umm, Tennesseegurl is on our side, Tena.

She's saying this is just another Clinton distraction.

avatar

He released those returns to the Chicago press. This is a non-issue.

avatar

Thanks SCMadden. I should clarify. I was talking about the Clinton's and the phony controversies.

I demand that we get to see what Obama's kindergarten teacher wrote about him on his report card!

I would bet my house, my car, and my firstborn son that if Obama had instead demanded Clinton's returns from that time period (and if she hadn't actually released them), everyone on this blog would be screaming for their release.

I don't know. Is it fair of me to hold it against Obama how asinine his supporters are? I don't really feel like he's directly responsible for them, but still...it is what it is.

His returns were already released.

avatar

This is only a means for Obama to give the people the illusion the Clinton's are trying to hide something. None of them are obligated to release their returns unless they actually become the candidate. The pressure works, so the candidates are responding with releases.

avatar

Ok, now both candidates have release returns for the same amount of time for this primary. It took Hillary an awfully long time to do it, too. So now we're playing games, wanting two years of Obama's tax returns from 11 years ago? Are we going to have to go back and get the records of both candidates starting in kindergarten? If there's supposed to be something significant about those two years, why doesn't the Clinton campaign just come out and say so? Otherwise, what's the big deal?

avatar

BARACK OBAMA, HYPOCRITE AND HOPE-MONGERER.

Huh?

avatar

Obama released in 2007 tax filings today, mere hours before the debate. Either he has a plan of attack with the filings, or got wind of a potential Clinton attack.

Or they were released simply because it is the day after the filing deadline.

avatar

"Screw-'Em. You don't owe them a thing... They're doing nothing for you; you don't have to do anything for them."

I'm thinking this is an all-purpose philosophy, with 'Em having morphed from working-class white southerners to people who attend caucuses to small states to medium states to people who attend large rallies to young people to AA...

We are all gradually joining 'EM in her eyes.
